Faithful Friendships Help You Grow

“No more lying, then! Each of you must tell the truth to the other believer, because we are all members together in the body of Christ.”

Ephesians 4:25 (GNT)

Real change requires honest community.

There are some things that you will never be able to change on your own. You’re going to need people in your life for support—specifically, a small group of people who will be transparent and authentic with you.

Sometimes in a football game, a player is so big that no opposing player can pull him down on his own. In the same way, some of the challenges in your life have to be team-tackled.

That’s when you need a small group—but not just any group of people. Your small group should be made up of a few people you can talk with about your weaknesses and problems—all your hurts, habits, and hang-ups.

That kind of intimacy doesn’t happen right away. When you first start a small group, you get together regularly. Then, over time, you begin to trust each other and develop a safe environment. Those people become the friends who can help you change when you can’t change on your own.

Ephesians 4:25 says, “No more lying, then! Each of you must tell the truth to the other believer, because we are all members together in the body of Christ” (GNT).

When you pretend to be someone you’re really not, you waste an enormous amount of energy.

You may sincerely want to grow in Christ and to work on your weaknesses. But to do that, you have to be honest with your small group about who you really are. That kind of honesty is essential for spiritual change. If you could change on your own, you would, but you can’t—so you don’t. You need other people!

One thing that keeps most people from being honest is their desire to look good. Your desire to look good often takes precedence over being good. And it becomes a hurdle to spiritual growth.

But in a small group of other believers, you’re safe just to be yourself. Then you can grow together and make the hard changes you couldn’t make on your own.

El Amor de Dios es Para Siempre

“Pues estoy convencido de que ni la muerte ni la vida, ni los ángeles ni los demonios, ni lo presente ni lo por venir, ni los poderes, ni lo alto ni lo profundo, ni cosa alguna en toda la creación podrá apartarnos del amor que Dios nos ha manifestado en Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor”. Romanos 8:38-39 (NVI)

No importa lo mal que se ponga la vida, puedes descansar en una verdad importante: Dios no dejará de amarte.

Tendrás cosas que saldrán bien. Tendrás cosas que saldrán mal. Pero el amor de Dios nunca terminará. Puedes contar con ello.

De hecho, ¡esa verdad debería ser una de las fuentes más importantes de alegría en tu vida!

La Biblia lo dice así en Romanos 8:38-39: “Pues estoy convencido de que ni la muerte ni la vida, ni los ángeles ni los demonios, ni lo presente ni lo por venir, ni los poderes, ni lo alto ni lo profundo, ni cosa alguna en toda la creación podrá apartarnos del amor que Dios nos ha manifestado en Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor” (NVI).

Esas son buenas noticias.

Cuando pones tu mano en la mano de Dios, Él no te suelta. Dios se aferra a ti con todo lo que tiene.

Cuando mis hijos eran pequeños, fuimos al Gran Cañón. Cuando llegamos al borde, agarré las manos de mis dos hijos menores, Josh y Matthew. Por supuesto, querían acercarse más al borde de lo que yo quería que llegaran. Intentaron retorcerse y liberarse, pero no los solté. Yo era su padre y los amaba.

Tendrás momentos en tu vida en los que querrás soltar la mano de Dios. Querrás renunciar a tu compromiso con Cristo cuando los tiempos se pongan difíciles.

Pero Dios no te dejará ir, nunca. Una vez que pones tu mano en la suya, está ahí para quedarse.

Si pudieras ganar tu salvación, podrías perderla en el momento en que dejaras de trabajar por ella. Pero no te ganaste tu relación con Dios. Fue un regalo gratis. Una vez que se ha dado, no se puede retirar.

Esa es una fuente inimaginable de gozo para cualquier creyente.

It’s Time to Clean House

“We must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up.”

Hebrews 12:1 (GW)

Real change requires cleaning house.

If you’re one of those people who can’t find the motivation to get your physical house clean, then cleaning your spiritual house may seem like a bigger task. But this is where you need to use your best energy—because God wants you to spend your life becoming more like him. And becoming more like him sometimes requires you to make difficult changes.

The Bible says it like this: “We must get rid of everything that slows us down, especially sin that distracts us. We must run the race that lies ahead of us and never give up” (Hebrews 12:1 GW).

To decide what you need to clean in your spiritual house, you just have to figure out what needs to change in your life. Ask yourself questions like: What is slowing me down?

If you want a healthy body, then maybe you need to keep healthier food in your house or create a meal plan. Or maybe you need to commit to regular exercise, even if you start small with 15 minutes a day.

If you want a healthy mind, then you may need to unsubscribe to some magazines or block some channels. You may just need to delete some apps or put healthier boundaries around your screen time.

If you want a healthy schedule, then you need to decide what’s most important to you. Then you can eliminate some less-important activities—sometimes even good ones—so that you can focus more on what matters most to you.

If you want a clean heart, then you need to spend time in prayer, asking God what you need to confess and then confessing those things. This can be the most difficult step of spiritual cleaning. Through confession, you’re recognizing and rooting out sins that cause unhealthy habits throughout your spiritual house.

The Bible says in Ephesians 4:22, “Get rid of your old self, which made you live as you used to—the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires” (GNT).

It’s time to clean house—but it’s not a one-time practice. Just like you have to regularly clean your physical home, you need to make a habit of asking the hard questions to identify what spiritual rooms need a good cleaning. Then, with God’s blessing, you get to work.

Dios Puede Usar Tus Errores Para Su Bien

“Ahora bien, sabemos que Dios dispone todas las cosas para el bien de quienes lo aman, los que han sido llamados de acuerdo con su propósito”. Romanos 8:28 (NVI)

Seamos sinceros. Tú y yo hacemos tonterías de vez en cuando. Cometemos errores.

Pero nada de lo que hagas está más allá de la capacidad de Dios para usar. Puedes cometer errores, pero Dios no.

La Biblia lo dice así en Romanos 8:28: “Ahora bien, sabemos que Dios dispone todas las cosas para el bien de quienes lo aman, los que han sido llamados de acuerdo con su propósito” (NVI).

Cuando cometes un error, Dios promete que puede usarlo para bien.

Sin embargo, quiero ser claro. Esta no es una promesa para todos. El versículo no dice que Dios dispone todo para bien de los que viven en rebelión contra Él o de los que no viven para sus propósitos.

La promesa es para las personas que vienen a Dios y dicen: “Quiero vivir para tu propósito. No siempre lo hago bien. Pero quiero hacer lo correcto. Quiero confiar en ti y quiero seguirte”. Haz eso, y Dios lo tomará todo y lo usará para tu bien.

Eso es motivo de alegría.

Cuando pones tu vida en sus manos, no significa que nunca volverás a equivocarte. Seguirás tomando malas decisiones. Todavía te equivocarás. Pero Dios puede acomodarlo todo en sus planes.

No hay un plan B para tu vida. Dios sabía todos los errores que cometerías antes de nacer. También sabía que encajaría esos errores en Su plan.

Eso significa que puedes relajarte. Puedes dejar de estar ansioso. Puedes descansar. Haz lo mejor que puedas con lo que Dios te ha dado. Él trabajará todo en Su plan.

To Really Change, You Have to Know the Truth

“Use the truth to make them holy. Your words are truth.”

John 17:17 (GW)

If you want to be transformed, you can’t be conformed.

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 3:18-19, “Don’t fool yourself. Don’t think that you can be wise merely by being relevant . . . What the world calls smart, God calls stupid” (The Message).

If you want God to transform your life, then you have to choose not to conform to what society and culture say you should be or do. But you can’t make this life change on your own power.

Changing your life starts by changing the way you think, and that’s not something you can do by yourself. Ephesians 4:23 says, “Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes” (NLT).

How does the Holy Spirit do that?

Real change requires learning the truth. You may already know these famous words of Jesus: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32 NLT).

But did you know that the night before Jesus went to the cross, he prayed, “Use the truth to make them holy. Your words are truth” (John 17:17 GW).

God uses the truth of his Word to make you complete.

The secret to personal change is not willpower. It’s not about making resolutions.

The secret to personal change in the hard areas of your life is knowing and applying the truth—which you’ll find in God’s Word, the Bible.

If you spend time in the Word of God, soaking your mind with the truth, the Bible promises this: “Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or . . . made the lie sound like the truth. Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times . . . and so become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church” (Ephesians 4:14-16 TLB).

The more you get to know Jesus, the more truth you’ll know. And you’ll find yourself moving past the lies you’ve been believing. You’ll grow, change, and transform more into the likeness of Christ. And you’ll realize that the truth really does set you free.

Talk It Over

Many people think that following God’s Word brings bondage because of all the rules they have to follow. But how does following God’s Word actually bring freedom? When have you experienced that freedom in your own life?
How are you making time in your life to “soak” your mind with the truth of God’s Word? If you’re not doing that, what new habits do you need to start this week?
What lie—what thought that you believe—is keeping you in bondage? How has God’s Word brought you freedom from that? If it hasn’t, begin applying the truth of God’s Word to that lie today.

Dios Quiere Pasar la Eternidad Contigo

“El Espíritu de Dios, quien levantó a Jesús de los muertos, vive en ustedes; y así como Dios levantó a Cristo Jesús de los muertos, él dará vida a sus cuerpos mortales mediante el mismo Espíritu, quien vive en ustedes”. Romanos 8:11 (NTV)

Dios nunca prometió que esta vida sería justa. Vivimos en un planeta imperfecto. Solo en el cielo todo se hace a la manera de Dios. La vida en la tierra simplemente no funciona así.

Pero lo que sucede en esta tierra no es todo lo que hay en la vida.

Pasarás 60, 80 o tal vez 100 años en la Tierra. Pasarás billones de años en la eternidad. Si has puesto tu fe en Jesús, la Biblia dice que pasarás la eternidad con Dios en el cielo.

Esa es una de las razones más importantes por las que los cristianos deberían estar alegres: ¡Dios nos ha dado vida eterna!

La Biblia promete: “El Espíritu de Dios, quien levantó a Jesús de los muertos, vive en ustedes; y así como Dios levantó a Cristo Jesús de los muertos, él dará vida a sus cuerpos mortales mediante el mismo Espíritu, quien vive en ustedes” Romanos 8:11 (NTV).

¿Cómo será el cielo? La eternidad con Dios será asombrosa. Te reunirás con las personas que amas. Obtendrás recompensas. Descansarás. Tendrás las responsabilidades que amas.

También obtendrás un nuevo cuerpo. La Biblia dice: “Lo mismo sucede con la resurrección de los muertos. Cuando morimos, nuestros cuerpos terrenales son plantados en la tierra, pero serán resucitados para que vivan por siempre” 1 Corintios 15:42 (NTV).

Fuiste creado porque Dios quiere una familia y quiere pasar la eternidad con su familia. ¡Él quiere pasar la eternidad contigo y conmigo!

Deja que esa verdad te traiga gran alegría hoy.

When You Want to Know, ‘How Long, Lord?’

“[Moses] kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible.”

Hebrews 11:27 (NLT)

Many people suffer from prolonged pain, whether it’s chronic physical, emotional, spiritual, relational, or financial pain. Maybe you’re experiencing extended suffering, and you feel like you might have to endure it for the rest of your life.

We’ve been talking the last few days about tests God gives you to grow your character, and this is another one. It is the “How Long” test, where you ask, “How long, Lord?”

The Bible tells how Moses had incredible persistence. He put up with enormous pain in his life. He endured significant criticism and conflict. He had every right to say, “How long, Lord?”

Hebrews 11:24-26 says, “It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin. He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward” (NLT).

Moses gave up everything that many people spend their lives trying to achieve—fame, fortune, pleasure, possessions, and position. But he let them go because he had put his faith and identity in God. He trusted in God’s promises, even as he was mistreated along with God’s people. He thought that being disgraced for the sake of Christ was worth more than the treasures of Egypt—because “he was looking ahead to his reward.”

Faith is continuing to persist without knowing how long you’ll need to hang on. And sometimes that’s very difficult. So how do you continue in faith when you are suffering? How do you develop endurance? How do you handle prolonged pain?

You do what Moses did: You get close to God and stay connected so you can hear from him.

Moses had a burning bush through which God talked to him. But you don’t need a burning bush because you have the Bible. Everything God wants to say to you is in the Bible. For you, God won’t say it through a bush or write it in the sky—because he already wrote it in a book.

Stop looking for a vision. Instead, start looking for a verse in God’s Word. Knowing God’s revelation, instructions, and promises will give you the ability to pass the How Long test when you’re going through prolonged pain.

Like Moses, keep your focus where it belongs. The Bible says that Moses “kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27 NLT).

If you keep your eyes on your pain, you won’t be able to look up. But if you keep your eyes on your Savior, you’re going to walk through difficulty with his grace.

Talk It Over

What will you have to sacrifice in order to stay connected to God through regular Bible study? Is the sacrifice worth it?
When you go through suffering, where do you usually place your focus?
What have you learned about God through prolonged suffering?

If you've never opened your life to Jesus Christ, you’ll never find the direction or have the protection that comes from a relationship with him.

You don't need to know what's going to happen tomorrow. You don't need to know what the future holds. You just need to know who holds the future! When you have a relationship with your Creator, you'll have the security of his unwavering love and unbreakable promises.

If you want to begin an intimate, forever relationship with Jesus, pray: “Dear God, I want my security to be in something that cannot be taken from me. I want my security to be in my relationship with you, as I trust in your promise to never leave me. I want to claim that promise today. As much as I know how, I open my life to you. I confess that I have lived life my own way and sinned against you. I know that the only way to know God as my Father is through Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sin. Please forgive me and be Lord of my life, change my priorities, my values, my purpose, and my direction. Transform me into the person you want me to be as I submit my life to you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Vive en la Alegría del Perdón

“Pero yo confío en tu amor inagotable; me alegraré porque me has rescatado”. Salmo 13:5 (NTV)

Si eres un seguidor de Jesús, la alegría debe ser una forma de vida. ¿Por qué? Has sido completamente perdonado. Ya no hay razón para la culpa o la vergüenza.

Me parece un buen motivo de alegría.

La Biblia dice: “Por lo tanto, ya no hay condenación para los que pertenecen a Cristo Jesús” Romanos 8:1 (NTV).

Romanos 8 fue originalmente escrito en griego. La palabra traducida como “no” es el negativo más fuerte posible en griego. Es como si Dios estuviera diciendo: “No, no, no, ni en mil años, ni en un millón de años, ninguna opción en tu vida”.

Eso es importante, porque una de las principales razones por las que las personas pierden la alegría es la culpa. La culpa y la vergüenza tienen el poder de robarte la alegría.

Todos cometemos errores. Pero Dios no quiere que vivas en auto condena, diciéndote constantemente: “Debería ser mejor”.

Entonces, ¿cómo quiere Dios que manejes tu culpa? Al sincerarte y confesar tu error. Acude a Dios y di: “Lo siento. Por favor perdóname” y Él borrará tu pecado.

¡Jesucristo murió en la cruz para que tus pecados fueran perdonados y ya no tuvieras que vivir con la culpa! Y no solo murió por los pecados que ya has cometido. Él también murió por los que aún no has cometido. Todos están cubiertos bajo la cruz.

Jesús tomó tu condenación. Por eso murió. Tus pecados han sido pagados. No tienes que volver a pagar por ellos.

Esa es la salvación, y es tu motivo más importante de alegría. Es la alegría de una conciencia tranquila.

Puedes experimentar el mismo gozo que tuvo el rey David cuando escribió el Salmo 13: “Pero yo confío en tu amor inagotable; me alegraré porque me has rescatado” Salmo 13:5 (NTV).

Impossible? Trust God For the Answer

“It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise.”

Hebrews 11:11 (NLT)

When God is growing your character, he sometimes will test you with what seems like an unsolvable problem. I call it the “How Test.” It’s when you ask, “How in the world am I going to solve this one?”

God gave Abraham what seemed like an unsolvable problem. God promised Abraham that he was going to move him to a new country, give him the land in that country, and make him the father of a great nation. He also promised that Abraham would have so many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, that they would populate the whole land.

In other words, he was going to give Abraham, as his heritage, a great nation.

But here’s the thing: Abraham was 75 years old and childless when God gave him this promise. He moved to the land of Canaan, which would eventually be called Israel. While he was there, he kept waiting for his wife to get pregnant. By age 99, he still didn’t have a son.

It was what you might call an unsolvable problem.

In fact, the Bible says that when God told Abraham and Sarah that they were going to have a baby, they laughed. How in the world were they going to have a baby?

This was their How Test. Hebrews 11:11 says, “It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise” (NLT). They named the baby Isaac, which means “laughter.”

“And so a whole nation came from this one man who was as good as dead—a nation with so many people that, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore, there is no way to count them” (Hebrews 11:12 NLT).

God had the last laugh!

There are going to be plenty of times in your life when God tells you to do something that seems impossible. But he doesn’t want you to understand everything or know how to do everything. He doesn’t even expect you to always know the next step to take.

Instead, God wants you to believe that he knows everything, and he will work things out in his own way and time. Faith is expecting a miracle without knowing how. When you show this kind of faith, you grow in character and become more like Jesus.

Cuando Pidas Algo, Cree que Dios te Responderá

“Crean que ya han recibido todo lo que estén pidiendo en oración, y lo obtendrán”. Marcos 11:24 (NVI)

Si te diera un cheque hoy por mil dólares, ¿retendrías tu agradecimiento hasta confirmar que el cheque tiene fondos? Cualquiera que me conozca pensaría: “Este es un tipo bastante bueno. Puedo confiar en que tiene suficiente en su cuenta para cubrirlo. Le agradeceré ahora mismo. Primero me darías las gracias y luego llevarías el cheque al banco.

Las promesas de Dios son mejores que cualquiera de nuestras promesas. Incluso antes de que recibas lo que te ha prometido, puedes decir: “Gracias, Dios. Sé que lo que prometiste sucederá. Harás lo que dices que harás”.

Hay un gran ejemplo de esto en el “Salón de la Fama de la Fe” de Dios en Hebreos 11. ¿Recuerdas cómo Josué guió a los israelitas alrededor de Jericó, donde se derrumbaron los muros? ¿Cómo se derrumbaron las paredes? Hebreos 11:30 dice: “Por la fe cayeron los muros de Jericó, después de haber marchado el ejército alrededor de ellos durante siete días” (NVI).

El pueblo de Israel se dirigía a la Tierra Prometida, donde se encontraba la poderosa ciudad de Jericó. Dios prometió que dejaría entrar a los israelitas a la ciudad y luego les dio Su plan. Fue más o menos así: “Quiero que vayas y marches alrededor de Jericó durante siete días. Luego, en el séptimo día, quiero que marches alrededor de la ciudad siete veces, agradeciéndome por la victoria que vendrá”. Y cuando hicieron eso, las paredes simplemente se derrumbaron. ¡Dios hizo lo que había prometido!

A menudo he pensado: “¿Qué pasaría si hubiera sido una de esas personas que marchan alrededor de las murallas durante siete días?” Algunos de ellos deben haber estado mirando los muros, preocupándose cada vez más y preguntándose cómo Dios podría derribar los muros. Pero muchas de esas personas tenían fe en su lugar. Y todos los días miraban la pared y pensaban en lo que Dios podía hacer y le daban las gracias de antemano.

Este es el tipo de vida que Dios quiere que vivas, el tipo de vida de agradecimiento a Dios por adelantado. Jesús habló de ello en Marcos 11:24: “Crean que ya han recibido todo lo que estén pidiendo en oración, y lo obtendrán” (NVI).

Cuando le pides algo a Dios, ¿por qué pedirlo si no crees? Es un ejercicio vacío.

Jesús dijo que, si oras y le pides algo a Dios, debes creer que lo hará. Agradécele de antemano lo que solo Él puede hacer. Y luego observa cómo responde a tu oración.
