How to Love Difficult People at Work

“Do all your work in love.”

1 Corinthians 16:14 (GNT)

Why do you do what you do?

If you’re just working so you can survive, then you are wasting your life. There is more to life than working just to live!

The highest motivation for any kind of work is love. When you do anything in love, that pleases God. You can run through checklists all day and please God. You can pick up garbage and please God. You can look at a computer screen and please God. You can clean a hospital or hotel room and please God. How? By doing it in love.

You can do anything in love.

Sometimes you do the right thing but for the wrong motivation—and God says you don’t get any credit for that. God is more interested in why you do what you do than he is in what you do. The Bible says, “Do all your work in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14 GNT).

People ask me all the time, “Rick, how have you stayed motivated being a pastor for over 40 years?” The answer is simple: I do it out of love. I love God, and I love people.

Love is what keeps you going when you feel like giving up. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 1:3, “We remember before our God and Father how you put your faith into practice, how your love made you work so hard” (GNT). Love is the ultimate motivation.

You may have to deal with all kinds of people at work, including people who are dishonest, disagreeable, defensive, and demeaning. You probably have to work with somebody you don’t like.

But God wants you to grow in love. So if you’re going to grow up spiritually, it means you’re going to have to learn to love those people.

How do you do that? The Bible says, “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:16-18 NIV).

Here are some practical ways to love difficult people at work: Treat everyone with kindness. Don’t become set in your own opinions. Work happily together. Respond with grace and forgiveness. Do all you can to live at peace with everyone.

Los Problemas te Preparan Para la Eternidad

“Así que alégrense de verdad. Les espera una alegría inmensa, aunque tienen que soportar muchas pruebas por un tiempo breve. Estas pruebas demostrarán que su fe es auténtica. Está siendo probada de la misma manera que el fuego prueba y purifica el oro, aunque la fe de ustedes es mucho más preciosa que el mismo oro. Entonces su fe, al permanecer firme en tantas pruebas, les traerá mucha alabanza, gloria y honra en el día que Jesucristo sea revelado a todo el mundo”. 1 Pedro 1:6-7 (NTV)

Necesitas más que pensamientos positivos para sobrevivir en este mundo. Necesitas esperanza.

En 1 Pedro 1, la Biblia ofrece cinco razones por las que puedes tener esperanza por medio de Jesucristo. En los devocionales anteriores, te he dado las primeros cuatro:

Dios te eligió a ti antes de que tú lo eligieras a Él.Dios siempre te trata con gracia y misericordia.Dios ha asegurado tu futuro.El poder de Dios te protegerá.

Finalmente, puedes tener esperanza porque Dios te está preparando para la eternidad.

Dios está usando todo en tu vida, lo bueno, lo malo y lo feo, para prepararte para la eternidad. Una vez que entiendes esto, la vida comienza a tener sentido. Dejas de decir: “Señor, ¿por qué me está pasando esto?” porque ya sabes que Él te está preparando para la eternidad.

Estos versículos describen seis verdades acerca de los problemas:

Los problemas son temporales. No durarán para siempre.

Los problemas son necesarios. Son una parte indispensable de tu preparación para el cielo.

Los problemas son variados. Experimentarás pruebas de diferentes formas, tamaños y niveles de intensidad.

Los problemas ponen a prueba tu fe. Construyes músculos probándolos. De la misma manera, cuando tu fe es probada, tu fe se fortalece.

Los problemas purifican tus motivos. Dios está mucho más interesado en tu carácter que en tu comodidad. Usará pruebas para refinar tu carácter.

Los problemas te preparan para tus recompensas. Las pruebas por las que estás pasando ahora no se comparan con las recompensas del cielo.

Los problemas que estás experimentando ahora no son divertidos. Incluso pueden ser dolorosos. Pero la Biblia deja en claro que fortalecerán tu fe. Entonces, tu fe producirá perseverancia.

Es por eso por lo que puedes tener esperanza, sin importar lo que esté pasando en tu vida en este momento.

When Work Gets Overwhelming

“I think you ought to know, dear brothers, about the hard time we went through in Asia. We were really crushed and overwhelmed, and feared we would never live through it. We . . . saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good, for then we put everything into the hands of God, who alone could save us, for he can even raise the dead.”

2 Corinthians 1:8-9 (TLB)

Everyone experiences problems at work. But sometimes those problems keep growing to the point that they become overwhelming, and you feel like they’re about to swallow you up.

What do you do then? You do what Paul did when he was overwhelmed.

Remember, Paul was an apostle of Jesus Christ, and he traveled throughout the world to share the good news. He says in 2 Corinthians 1:8-9, “I think you ought to know, dear brothers, about the hard time we went through in Asia. We were really crushed and overwhelmed, and feared we would never live through it. We . . . saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good, for then we put everything into the hands of God, who alone could save us, for he can even raise the dead” (TLB).

When you’re experiencing a problem at work that is so overwhelming that you think you’re going to hit the wall, you need to do three things.

First, turn the problem over to God through prayer. You can say like Paul does, “God, I’m overwhelmed. I feel helpless. I’m confused. I feel like I’m not going to make it through.” Cry out to God and surrender the problem to him.

Second, make sure you’re in a small group. In the 2 Corinthians passage, the word “we” is used six times, and the word “us” is used twice. When Paul was going through an overwhelming circumstance in his job, he was not alone. Like Paul, you need fellow believers you can count on. Specifically, you need to have a small group of friends who will study the Bible with you every week, pray with you and for you regularly, and encourage you when you’re going through a tough time at work.

Third, remember that God uses people at work to teach you how to love. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 16:14, “Do all your work in love” (GNT). At work—and in every area of your life—as you learn to get along with other people, you’re actually learning how to love. And learning how to love is what life is all about.

What are some practical ways to learn to love at work? Treat your coworkers how you want to be treated in your job. Show your coworkers that loving them is more important to you than any job skill. And, no matter how difficult work gets, be mindful of loving others like Jesus.

Remember, when work gets overwhelming, you should pray, lean on your small group, and do all your work in love.

El Poder de Dios Siempre te Protege

“Por la fe que tienen, Dios los protege con su poder hasta que reciban esta salvación, la cual está lista para ser revelada en el día final, a fin de que todos la vean”. 1 Pedro 1:5 (NTV)

La esperanza importa.

En un mundo que a menudo parece sombrío, debes comprender que lo mejor de Dios está por venir.

En 1 Pedro 1, encuentras cinco razones por las que puedes tener esperanza, sin importar lo que esté pasando en tu vida. En los devocionales anteriores, les he dado las primeras tres razones:

Dios te eligió a ti antes de que tú lo eligieras a Él.Dios siempre te trata con gracia y misericordia.Dios ha asegurado tu futuro.

Hoy veremos la cuarta razón para tener esperanza: el poder de Dios te protegerá.

La Biblia dice: “Por la fe que tienen, Dios los protege con su poder hasta que reciban esta salvación, la cual está lista para ser revelada en el día final, a fin de que todos la vean” 1 Pedro 1:5 (NTV).

Seamos honestos: a veces todos nos encontramos en situaciones en las que nos sentimos desesperanzados, indefensos e impotentes.

Pero la verdad es que eso es mentira. No estás desesperanzado, desamparado o impotente cuando tienes el Espíritu de Dios en tu vida. Dios dice que su gran poder te protegerá.

¿Alguna vez has pasado por una casa y has visto un letrero que dice “Protegido por un sistema de seguridad”? Como seguidor de Cristo, podrías tener algo similar, un letrero que diga: “Protegido por Dios”.

La palabra “proteger” en 1 Pedro 1:5 significa literalmente “guarnición”. Significa que estás continuamente protegido por el poder de Dios.

Dios te está cuidando en cada momento del día, tal como lo haría un centinela o un guardaespaldas. Todo en tu vida está filtrado por el Padre. Él usa incluso las cosas difíciles causadas por tu pecado o el pecado de otros para tu bien.

¿Cuál es tu papel en todo esto? Es muy simple: confías en Dios. Estás rodeado por un Dios todopoderoso y amoroso, y siempre puedes tener esperanza, sabiendo que su poder te protegerá.

There’s Purpose to Your Work Problems

“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character.”

Romans 5:3-4 (TLB)

Have you ever had a problem at work? Of course you have. Everyone—no matter where they work or who they work with—has had some kind of trouble at some point in their job.

The Bible tells you what to do with that kind of trouble: “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character” (Romans 5:3-4 TLB).

God is far more interested in your character than he is in your comfort. He’s working to perfect you, not to pamper you. His goal in your life and in your work is not to make you comfortable; his goal is to help you grow up. And he uses problems in your life to grow your character.

When you have a problem at work, don’t ask God why you’re having that problem. Instead, ask God, “What do you want me to learn from this? What are you trying to teach me? What’s my blind spot? What character issue needs to be worked on?”

And as you ask God, “What?” also remember this simple truth: While you’re working on your job, God is working on you.

Sometimes temptation will be a problem for you at work—but God can use even temptations for your good! Many believers say they don’t like working with unbelievers because those unbelievers bring more temptations. But that’s just not true. You’ll be tempted with believers just as much as with unbelievers. And it’s not a sin to be tempted anyway; it’s just a sin to give in to temptation. The Bible says Jesus was tempted in every way, just like you are, and yet he never sinned.

You’re going to be tempted the rest of your life, no matter where you work. But God can use those temptations for good. He can use them to build character. Every time you’re tempted, you get to make a choice. You can choose to resist temptation, or you can choose to act on it.

Every time you give in, temptation harms you. Every time you choose to do good, temptation becomes a stepping stone for growth.

Dios ya ha Escrito el Capítulo Final de tu Vida

“Que toda la alabanza sea para Dios, el Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Es por su gran misericordia que hemos nacido de nuevo, porque Dios levantó a Jesucristo de los muertos. Ahora vivimos con gran expectación y tenemos una herencia que no tiene precio, una herencia que está reservada en el cielo para ustedes, pura y sin mancha, que no puede cambiar ni deteriorarse”. 1 Pedro 1:3-4 (NTV)

Es fácil mirar alrededor del mundo y no ver ninguna razón para la esperanza. Pero la Palabra de Dios es clara: tienes razones reales para tener esperanza. El primer capítulo de 1 Pedro da cinco de esas razones. He descrito dos de ellas en los devocionales anteriores:

Dios te eligió a ti antes de que tú lo eligieras a ÉlDios siempre te trata con gracia y misericordia.

La tercera razón es esta:

Dios ha asegurado tu futuro. No importa lo que pase por el resto de tu vida, si tienes una relación con Jesucristo, Dios garantiza tu futuro. Nunca podrás perder tu salvación.

La Biblia dice: “Que toda la alabanza sea para Dios, el Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Es por su gran misericordia que hemos nacido de nuevo, porque Dios levantó a Jesucristo de los muertos. Ahora vivimos con gran expectación y tenemos una herencia que no tiene precio, una herencia que está reservada en el cielo para ustedes, pura y sin mancha, que no puede cambiar ni deteriorarse” 1 Pedro 1:3-4 (NTV).

Una herencia es lo que te dan por pertenecer a una familia. Por lo general, se te otorga cuando alguien muere. Es como un derecho de nacimiento.

Pedro da cinco palabras y frases para describir tu herencia en el cielo:

No tiene precio: Su valor es tan grande que ni siquiera puedes medirlo.

Reservada: Necesitas una reserva para entrar al cielo, y solo puedes hacer esa reserva a través de Jesús. Una vez que realizas tu reserva, nunca se puede cancelar.

Pura: No es falso. Es un trato real.

Sin mancha: No se puede corromper. No puedes perderlo, nunca.

Más allá del alcance del cambio y la decadencia: no se marchitará, morirá ni perderá su valor.

Dios ya ha escrito el capítulo final de tu vida. ¡Tienes una reserva que no puedes perder! Puedes creer en eso, confiar en eso y poner tu esperanza en ello.

¿Por qué es tan importante poder confiar en que el regalo de salvación de Dios es seguro?¿Alguna vez has luchado por creer en la seguridad de tu salvación? ¿Qué te ayudó a superar esas preocupaciones?¿De qué manera saber que tu futuro es seguro cambia la forma en que vives hoy?

Real Change Requires Faith

“Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.”

Ephesians 3:20 (TLB)

For the last few days we’ve looked together at how to achieve real change in your life. Real change requires knowing God’s truth, cleaning your spiritual house, and honest community. And, like anything to do with spiritual growth, real change requires faith.

In other words, you have to believe that you can change, with God’s help.

How does God help you to change? There are two primary ways. He can transform you by his Spirit living in you and with his Word, the Bible.

Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes” (TLB).

What is the biggest thing you want to change in your life? No matter how big it is, it’s not too big for God.

Maybe you’ve tried and failed to make the change on your own. That’s because you never were meant to change alone. You change with God’s power. And how do you get God’s power? Through faith. God supplies his power in response to your faith in him.

Philippians 4:13 is a familiar verse, but the Amplified Bible says it in a way you may not have heard before: “I can do all things [which he has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything . . . through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]”

With the power of Jesus Christ, you can do anything God has called you to do. His power was infused in you when you became his follower.

If you want to change, then you need a can-do attitude—not a big ego about what you can do but a big faith in what God is able to accomplish in and through you.

Jesus said in Matthew 9:29, “According to your faith let it be done to you” (NIV).

You get to choose how much you change. You get to choose how much God blesses your life. You get to believe in faith that God can help you make the hard changes.

Talk It Over

When you try to make changes in your life, do you depend more on your power or God’s power in you? What has been the result?
Why do you think God wants you to choose how much you change?
How does it make you feel to remember that, with the power of Jesus Christ, you can do anything God has called you to do?

If you haven’t trusted in Jesus and committed to following him, why wait any longer?

You don’t have to earn God’s love or work your way into heaven. The Bible says, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to commit your life to God, then pray this prayer:

“Dear Jesus, you have promised that if I believe in you, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I receive you into my life as my Lord. I choose to depend on your power through the Holy Spirit to accomplish my purpose and do the things you have called me to do.

“I want to use the rest of my life to serve you instead of serving myself. I commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

No Importa que tan Mal lo Arruines, Dios Ofrece Misericordia

“Pero, cuando se manifestaron la bondad y el amor de Dios nuestro Salvador, él nos salvó, no por nuestras propias obras de justicia, sino por su misericordia. Nos salvó mediante el lavamiento de la regeneración y de la renovación por el Espíritu Santo”. Tito 3:4-5 (NVI)

No importa por lo que estés pasando, puedes vivir con esperanza. Esas son las buenas noticias consistentes de la Biblia.

En 1 Pedro 1, puedes encontrar cinco razones para vivir con esperanza. En el devocional de ayer, analizamos la primera razón: Dios te eligió a ti antes de que tú lo eligieras a Él.

Hoy veremos la segunda razón: Dios siempre te trata con gracia y misericordia.

Pedro escribió a los que ya eran creyentes: “¡Alabado sea Dios, Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo! Por su gran misericordia, nos ha hecho nacer de nuevo mediante la resurrección de Jesucristo, para que tengamos una esperanza viva” 1 Pedro 1:3 (NVI).

Pedro no solo dijo que Dios es misericordioso. Pedro alabó a Dios por su “gran misericordia”.

Cuanto más entiendas la misericordia y la gracia de Dios, más te asombrarás, como Pedro. Es completamente inmerecido. Es totalmente inmerecido. No es algo por lo que puedas ganar o trabajar. Es solo un regalo gratis.

La misericordia de Dios se basa en su amor por ti. Y no puedes hacer que Dios te ame más de lo que te ama ahora mismo. Tampoco puedes hacer que te ame menos. Eso significa que su misericordia hacia ti nunca cambiará.

La Palabra de Dios, la Biblia, dice: “Pero, cuando se manifestaron la bondad y el amor de Dios nuestro Salvador, él nos salvó, no por nuestras propias obras de justicia, sino por su misericordia. Nos salvó mediante el lavamiento de la regeneración y de la renovación por el Espíritu Santo” Tito 3:4-5 (NVI).

Esto es extremadamente importante de entender. Cuando cometes errores como creyente, Dios no se enoja contigo. Dios no quiere vengarse de ti. Dios no comienza a planear arruinar tu vida.

Esto es lo que Dios hace: Él siempre actúa con misericordia hacia ti. ¿Por qué? Porque estás cubierto con la sangre de Jesucristo cuando lo has aceptado como Salvador.

Gracias a Jesús, Dios responde con misericordia cada vez que te equivocas. Y eso puede darte esperanza.

Why Do You Need a Mentor?

“You have heard me teach . . . Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.”

2 Timothy 2:2 (NLT)

Even superstars need coaches. The top singers in the world have voice coaches, and the top Olympic athletes have coaches. The top CEOs have business coaches. Coaches help you maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

This principle of coaching or mentorship is found throughout the Bible. Joshua was mentored by Moses. Elisha was coached by Elijah. Solomon was mentored and coached by David, and David was mentored by Samuel.

The Apostle Paul mentored and coached Timothy and many other people. Paul says in 2 Timothy 2:2, “You have heard me teach . . . Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others” (NLT). Paul mentored Timothy, and then he expected Timothy to go and mentor faithful men who would then mentor and coach other faithful men.

God expects the same of faithful men and women today, because that’s how you grow in discipleship. In fact, you’re benefiting right now from the spiritual coaches that have mentored me over my lifetime, who helped me grow in different areas of my life.

The Bible says that God has given five different kinds of “coaches” for his church. All of those coaches are working toward a specific purpose: “Christ chose some of us to be apostles, prophets, missionaries, pastors, and teachers, so his people would learn to serve and his body would grow strong. This will continue until we are united by our faith and by our understanding of the Son of God. Then we will be mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him” (Ephesians 4:11-13 CEV).

Did you catch the purpose that these different coaches are working towards? They’re working “so his people would learn . . . and . . . grow strong.” If you want to learn, grow, and be strong, then you need a mentor.

A mentor is a spiritually mature friend and accountability partner who gets real with you and points out sin and weakness, while also encouraging your strengths and growth. They help you stay on the path of God’s purpose for you.

If you’re serious about making the most of your life, then you need to get a coach or mentor to help you fulfill your purpose. They don’t have to be perfect. They only have to be one step ahead of you. And, as you grow spiritually, you can be a mentor to someone else!

Talk It Over

Do you find it difficult to think of someone who could be a mentor to you? How can you surround yourself more with people who are at least one step ahead of you in faith?
What are some of your fears about having a mentor? What do you think God wants you to do with those fears?
Spend one minute in prayer right now. Ask God to help you take the next step in finding a mentor. Then ask him to give you more faith and wisdom so you can be an effective mentor to someone else.

Antes de que Eligieras a Dios, Él te Eligió a Ti

“Dios Padre los conocía y los eligió desde hace mucho tiempo, y su Espíritu los ha hecho santos. Como resultado, ustedes lo obedecieron y fueron limpiados por la sangre de Jesucristo. Que Dios les conceda cada vez más gracia y paz”. 1 Pedro 1:2 (NTV)

Muchas personas en nuestro mundo imperfecto preguntan por qué las cosas no parecen salir bien la mayor parte del tiempo. Quieren saber, “¿Hay esperanza?”

La esperanza es esencial.

Tú y yo necesitamos una esperanza genuina, no solo optimismo. El optimismo es psicológico; se basa en la forma en que piensas. La esperanza es teológica; se basa en quién es Dios y su relación contigo. El optimismo es pensamiento positivo. La esperanza es confiar apasionadamente.

El libro de 1 Pedro es una carta de esperanza. Pedro lo escribió a los cristianos que sufrían persecución en el Imperio Romano.

En los primeros siete versículos de 1 Pedro, Dios da cinco raíces de esperanza radical. En los próximos días, en estos devocionales de Esperanza Diaria, veremos cada una de esas cinco raíces.

La primera raíz de la esperanza radical es esta: Dios te eligió a ti antes que tú lo eligieras a Él.

La Biblia dice: “Dios Padre los conocía y los eligió desde hace mucho tiempo, y su Espíritu los ha hecho santos. Como resultado, ustedes lo obedecieron y fueron limpiados por la sangre de Jesucristo. Que Dios les conceda cada vez más gracia y paz” 1 Pedro 1:2 (NTV).

Tu salvación no es un accidente. Mucho antes de elegir a Dios, Él te eligió a ti. Fuiste su idea. Antes de que Dios incluso creara el universo, decidió que quería crearte a ti.

Mira de nuevo 1 Pedro 1:2. Dice: “Dios Padre los conocía y los eligió desde hace mucho tiempo, y su Espíritu los ha hecho santos”. Eso significa que Dios tiene un propósito para tu vida. ¿Cuál es ese propósito? Él quiere hacerte santo para el cielo.

En otras palabras, Dios te ha elegido para pasar la eternidad con Él. ¡Eso es un gran problema! De hecho, es el mayor honor que podrías recibir.

Y es la primera razón por la que puedes tener esperanza, sin importar lo que esté pasando en tu vida.

Deja que esta raíz de esperanza radical crezca profundamente en tu vida: antes de elegirlo, Dios te eligió a ti para pasar la eternidad con Él.
