The horror of self-published memories that come back to haunt me!

Many authors who began as self published, may have a book or two they wished they'd done differently - I know I do!
Echoes, my first book came out 2012 and I had NO IDEA what I was doing!! I knew self published wasn't frowned upon as it once had been and I knew I needed an author's platform on social media, (though I had no idea what that meant or how much hard work was involved!) but that was it. I had to learn twitter, Facebook etc and I'm still unsure about hashtags!
My book cover for Echoes was embarrassing when I look back on it - I cringe, it was pretty poor, but what the hell did I know with limited funds to pay for one and no idea who to call for help. Over the years, Echoes and Freya's Child has seen some different book covers and interiors as I couldn't afford proper editing and I was overjoyed when Echoes was accepted by a certain publishing house - that did nothing except give it another book cover, limited editing and took my money.
Now, it has been accepted by a decent publishing house, Doce Blant publishing and edited by a remarkable woman with stamina as we had so many edits and problems with lay out!! And now, I can truly say I am proud of my first novel. The novel that has so many emotional ties with. The novel I wrote to console me after the premature death of my son, Jac who died before I could give birth to him. The novel that sent me down the road of author and convinced me this is what I MUST do after it won various awards regardless of the cover and crap editing! I no longer feel shame, horror or embarrassment with my creation, I see perseverance, resilience, hard work and love.
http://www.pjroscoe.co.uk/?page_id=149 This is the page on my website to see all the varieties of book cover!
My husband reminds me that I should also feel proud, because when I am famous, any old, limited editions of Echoes and Freya's Child, will be worth a small fortune!! :) Another way to make a reader happy!
So yes, there are pirates out there who troll charity shops and places for old editions of books to re-sell on Amazon, but let them. Remind the readers of your latest, up to date, wonderfully edited version and move on. if people want to spend their money on an old, copy of your book? let it go - concentrate on the here and now and be proud of how far you have come.
Love and blessings

Busy busy bee! Connecting

Adventures of Faerie folk Volume 1Well,
I love to be busy, but lately, it is manic!! I notice my blog has been poor lately - not written since advertising dear Babs coming to Wrexham. (We're on first names now as we exchanged books!!) I wish!
It was wonderful to meet Barbara and I tentatively asked if she'd consider reading one of mine - she said yes and took, 'Between Worlds' AND asked me to sign it!! With shaking and sweating hands, I did, though I doubt it is coherent!
Since then i have been doing author book signings at Wrexham Waterstones and MBS festival in LLangollen and enjoying myself at Wychwood festival. I have just finished an interview with author, Deanna jewel which will be up on her blog 26th June-30th. Link here:
http://deannajewel.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I am also organising many author events. Storytime on 5th August for children 4yrs+ to Oswestry library for faerie stories and art 12-1pm
Hoping to launch the next 'Adventures of Faerie folk' at the LLangollen Faerie festival 12/13th August - fantastic day of people watching - last year I was chatting to a troll!!
I also have Author event at Oswestry library - bringing together authors of all genre's to chat to and sign their books on 19th August.

I am always humbled by people who come out of their homes, get into some kind of transport to come and chat with me, tell me their experiences with my books, chat about other books, ghosts, spirits, chakra's, anything, it is just a wonderful feeling.
And so, forgive me for not doing my usual full moon newsletter - not even sure who reads it anyway!!! 27 subscribers - let me hear from you - tell me your tales.
Blessings
Paula

Barbara Erskine is coming to Wrexham!

I cannot believe it! All these years of reading her brilliant work and she will be sitting in the same room as me on 6th May 2pm at Wrexham Library - tickets £8 available from Wrexham library or Wrexham Waterstones. This has been organised by 'Carnival of Words' a week long festival dedicated to the written word and local authors.
As you may know, Barbara is the best-selling author of books like, 'Lady of Hay', 'Kingdom of Shadows' and her latest, 'Sleeper's Castle' which I just finished reading and reviewed a couple of weeks ago. I intend to take my hard copy and ask if she'd sign it. Something to treasure.
Now, people who know me know that I never require another human beings signature as I am a well rounded, confident human being who doesn't need to hero worship another to be fulfilled. And yet, I am going to listen to this lady who's books have inspired me to write my own and hopefully talk to her in the hope of getting any idea's for my future. My own books have been compared to Barbara Erskine's for years and so something of her writing has entered my psyche.
I hope to see many people there and may I wish you all a wonderful day. :)

WINNER!!!

Oh My goodness. Life can be so wonderful. I have had the most fantastic news. My novella, Diary of Margery Blake is the 2017 winner of the Marie M Irvine Literary Excellence Award.
I am overwhelmed.
The winner was supposed to be announced on the 8th April, when I hadn't heard anything, my weekend was lovely with my family, sitting in the sun, gardening, walking the dog, going to our favourite pub to sit in the sun and drink real ale, but there was something missing. I felt a failure. I woke this morning determined to move ahead and continue with my writing regardless, though i will admit, I had a heavy heart.
Then, I read my emails. I couldn't stop crying with joy and jumping around the kitchen with my daughter, who was also in tears.
'You see Mum,' she said, 'You can do it, I knew you could.' From the mouths of babes.
I feel so blessed right now.

I wrote this book for women. To show that woman is powerful, strong and resilient and love truly is the strongest emotion.
Enjoy ladies. Find your power and live.

19 years today

Today, nineteen years ago, I gave birth to my special girl, Megan Arianwen. She was 6Ib 2oz and she was a gift. Her brother had died the year before, hours before I gave birth. To hold a dead son is something impossible to describe. To hold a living daughter is beyond words - and I'm an author.
Some have asked me my favourite words to describe my children, so here they are:
Precious. Strong. Courageous. Brave. Special. Miracles.
Jac died from many complications within his tiny body that should have meant he didn't live beyond 12 weeks in my womb- but he was a miracle to have lived to 36 weeks. He lived to show me courage at a time he knew I'd need it to continue with another pregnancy so soon after his death. The chances of something similar happening again was high, but I knew my little girl would live - and she did.
Megan has autism and dyspraxia, but regardless of all her problems, she continues to be brave and loving and kind and cares about people.
I wrote the Adventures of Faerie folk for her. To show her being different is okay. To prove that love and kindness truly are the strongest emotions and that nature is nurturing and beautiful, so much more fun than sitting watching the world go by on a screen.
http://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Children/...
It is now on Audible - perfect for night-time. Cuddle up with your precious children and listen to the first two stories in the series. More is coming - illustrations take a while to get right. Perseverance is another good word for my children, and myself.
So I invite you to consider beautiful words to describe your loved ones, and also yourself. If you find it difficult to consider loving words for yourself, explore that. We are all loving creatures, sometimes, we merely forget.
Sending you wonderful, bliss.

Imbolc Blessings

Goodness, has it really been three months since I last blogged here? My life has been hectic and time has flown incredibly fast.
I have been busy with Freya's Child audio and finishing Snake Route for the author, Fergus Macroich. After a few problems of converting the files to Audible's specifications, I think we have it right at last - it's been an uphill struggle to be patient, I won't lie. I am not a patient woman when I have worked damned hard for something and then its out of my hands - frustration is an awful energy to carry :(
Anyway, Freya is now with Audible and hopefully within the next couple of weeks it'll be up and running.
Along with this I have been re-editing 'Echoes' for Doce Blant publishers, I think we're there. Cover should be ready soon, so watch this space. It is Echoes 20th anniversary this year since I sat down in that cold kitchen following the death of our son and began writing it. Seems like only yesterday. The characters and story remains in my heart and soul as fresh as the first time I conjured them.
I feel I should apologise to all those who have bought 'Echoes' from me in the past. You do not have a bad book, you have the beginnings of an adventure, a limited edition of the path Echoes has led and has grown and matured. The story has changed slightly, but to those who enjoyed it the first time round, thank you for loving the essence of the story, now, I hope people will love the end result as much as they did at its beginning.
Also along this busy path, I have written two short stories, 'Thor's Quarry' for the Royden Tales anthology - still time to enter the short story competition (28th Feb) Check out my website for guidelines www.pjroscoe.co.uk and I have written 'A Lonely Inn' for what, I do not yet know, but it came to me one late night and so it was created.
Like all artistic people, if we feel the urge to create, we must obey!
So, the adventure continues and I wish you all a joyous Imbolc, the coming of spring in your life.
Blessings
Paula xx

November 24, 2016

November Natter!

I have been remiss in my lack of blogs lately - truth is - been busy with my newsletter which I will attempt to copy and paste here as well. Been going since August - and it comes out every full moon.
Here is Novembers: It does not have the pictures attached - but it allows you to know what is going on in my head! next one 14th Dec xx
So, we near the end of this year. November has crept forward and is bringing Autumn at full pelt. For many authors it is a time used to create a novel or novella, giving themselves a target of so many words typed per day and by the end of November, they might, in theory, have the workings of a novel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbSIK... My first go as a movie maker! Between Worlds is available now at store.Crimsoncloakpublishing.com

I do not have time to get involved in this - again! Every year I say I'd like to have a go, but every year something else is pushing for my attention. This year, I am editing the audio books - Freya's Child and doing the audio voice for 'Snake Route', by Fergus Macroich. Both take a very long time to do. I believe it was Stephen Fry who said "Audio books take almost as long as writing the damn thing in the first place!"
He is correct. Reading a chapter can take anything between 15-25 minutes, depending on size. Mistakes are made, have to stop, go back, re-do, edit the new corrections in, and continue. Then go through it all again to check for background noise, too long a pause, perhaps a word sounds wrong, the tone should be different - so in fact, one chapter can take up to two hours!
I finished the Faerie stories a couple of months ago and we hope to have them up on Audible any time now and through Crimsoncloakpublishing.com. Apparently, I'm the first audio book from their site.
I will have finished 'Freya's Child' by the end of November, so does this count? Doing a novel via audio instead of writing it?!
The past month has been a busy time. I've been honoured to have been involved with organising various 'meet the authors' and we recently held one in my local book shop in Mold, Flintshire. Along with authors, Fiona Holland and Marie Anne Cope we met readers, signed books and generally had a chat. It was a most pleasant morning.
I have also organised for four lady authors to attend our local theatr Clwyd on the 3rd December 11am - 3pm. We will be available to sell and sign books, chat about our books and I will be telling faerie stories to any children willing to listen! I will also be at my village Christmas fair on the 26th November to sell and sign books, so perfect Christmas presents all round!
Next month - Yule, Christmas ghosts and catching up on what I'm doing!

November can be a difficult time for many people. It is cold, the end of the year looms and perhaps things have happened within the year that haven't gone your way. Take a moment to reflect on your past year. Is there anything in your past that brings you feelings of anger or bitterness? If you hang onto these negative emotions, you can never be truly free.
Release the hurt and allow yourself to heal. Here's three ways to do this:
Try not to take things personally. If something is done or said, make a note of how it affects you and your reaction. Where does this feeling really come from? You may find it originates from a past hurt, and it is easier to forgive the person.
Write three letters, but don't actually send them. First, write one to yourself relaying all the hurt and pain someone has caused you. Second, write one to the person who has hurt you and empathise with their behaviour, try to understand where they may be hurting from a past hurt. Lastly, write a farewell letter to them, expressing that you wish to release the hurt, and how it no longer works to hold onto it and release the negative emotions. Say goodbye to them and wish them well in their own life. You may wish to burn these letters, sending them out into the universe to be cleansed.
Lastly, say something that allows you to express your forgiveness, such as: I forgive all those you have hurt me, for the injustices done against me, for the lies and the harm caused. I forgive their selfishness, as it no longer has a hold of my spirit. I release myself from this hurt, for I am worth more than this. xx

September 26, 2016

OMG!!! September is almost gone!

https://abookandtea.wordpress.com/201...

Above is the link to a lovely review of Diary of Margery Blake. The 17th came and went and oh what fun we had! Wrexham Waterstones are wonderful and kind, even buying us coffee! We had a multitude of friends, family and strangers come to see us and chat about our books. Fiona's first novel, Before all Else, was very popular, along with my new one, Diary of Margery Blake and my other three.
I hope to receive some reviews and word is spread.
Having had a fantastic day, I raced home to chat to Michelle and Jamie on their radio show in America - http://www.blogtalkradio.com/indierev...
It took a few minutes to find the correct number to reach America, but we did it and the half hour flew past - thanks ladies for having me again.
The night was filled with celebration - probably too much!!
Now, I await Friday 30th. Fiona and I have another engagement at Write Blend - a bookshop and coffee house. 7.30 start. We will talk briefly about our journey, our book(s) and will read an extract and then have a Q & A and signing. If in the Liverpool/Crosby area, I hope to meet you.
My latest adventure is audio reading for another author. I won't mention at this time the name of book or author, until I have finished, but it is a strange and wonderful adventure and hopefully this will lead into more audio work. So anyone wanting a British accent for their book, advert, poem, whatever, then listen to my page on Crimsoncloakpublishing.com and contact us.

On an important note - the blackberry wine is doing okay I think and the apple and blackberry pies went down a treat!!
Blessings of the equinox to you and may you find the balance you need in your life to be happy.
Blessings
Paula

Upcoming stuff!

Since my last blog - life has been a blink in the eye as time flies so fast! I try to find moments to stop and be quiet and I've found a few times to enjoy nature, the changing of the season as Autumn slowly creeps along the earth to change the foliage and bring forth an array of goodies to eat!
We already have a full freezer of damsons and blackberry and I wait now for the Rowan berries to ripen a touch more before I shall pick a small amount to have a go at making Rowan jelly. We have begun our journey down the road of making blackberry wine and shall attempt Damson wine also. I have scrumped enough apples to make blackberry and apple pies ready to share with friends at Madron - the Autumn Equinox to give thanks for Mother natures bounty and for all the joys that have happened so far.
The 17th is fast approaching. Fiona and I are excited to meet our readers and hopefully new ones will take a chance on our work. Wrexham Waterstones 11.30 - 2pm. I am launching 'Diary of Margery Blake' and Fiona is launching her first novel, 'Before All Else'. We'll chat about our writers life, our books and answer questions. We'll sign, chat about all thing book related with nibbles and sparkling water and juice for refreshment.
Afterwards I am rushing home to prepare for my American radio interview with Michelle and Jamie of Indiereviews in the spotlight. Once I get the link, I'll put it on.
First reviews of Diary of Margery Blake are encouraging, so I am happy. People are contacting me and hopefully they will put them on Amazon. I had a wonderful review from Clare https://abookandtea.wordpress.com/201...
So, this is September - lets see where this adventure leads. x
Blessings to you all and enjoy the beginning of Autumn, read a book by the fire, read a book, curled up in bed - but read and improve your world xx

August 16, 2016

Halfway through August!!!

I can barely believe it is 15th August already! The weeks are flying by with so many wonderful things happening.
Spent the weekend of 13/14th at LLangollen Faerie festival - selling books, signing, reading, meeting people and fellow authors. On the Sunday I had the very talented illustrator of my faerie book, Alan Jones with me, who was working on pieces of art whilst at the festival. He also, (in minutes) created a picture of an ancient sword for 'Between Worlds' due out December 2016. The cover for the book is complete - have to say, another stunning work by Loraine.
I have also had the privilege of having my Adventures of Faerie folk accepted by Crimson Cloak publishing, to go along with the audio book. It is frustratingly slow trying to organise the audio files, but I have to trust they will happen soon, along with the Freya's Child audio.
I am also happy to announce that my award winning novel, 'Echoes' has been accepted by Doce Blant publishing and we hope to have that out before Christmas as well.
I will be at Royden Park, Frankby, Wirral on Friday 19th 11.30 - 1pm to tell stories, sign books and generally chat about all things fae and supernatural if anyone fancies a coffee and a chat.
It's slowly coming together for the book launch of Diary of Margery Blake of 17th September at Waterstones, Wrexham - 11.30 - 2pm. Look forward to that.
"Believe in what you can, and trust it will occur in it's natural time." P.J Roscoe - (NOT EASY!!!!)

Many blessings
