CROGLIN VAMPIRE: Strange Tale From 1650s Cumbria

This particular account dates from just after the English Civil War in the 1650s. Whether it was fact, legend, or an aberration, the account has endured for centuries.

Our modern idea of a vampire, a creature that has returned from death to prey on humans at night, is based on Eastern European vampire, myths and, legends, such as vampires wearing capes or turning into bats. Although vampire myths occur in almost every culture around the world, such myths are rare in England where the idea was almost unknown until the 18th century, when reports from Europe began to surface.

This particular account dates from just after the English Civil War in the 1650s. The owners of Croglin Low Hall in Cumberland (now Cumbria) were a family named Fisher and the story was told to one Augustus Hare by a descendent of the family in 1896. For some reason of their own, the Fishers decided to go and live in the south of England and rent out the farm. The new tenants were two brothers and a sister named Cranswell. The new family stayed in their remote farmhouse through the first winter without event. The summer came and, that year, it was stiflingly hot so they slept with the windows open. At that time the Hall was only one story high - the upstairs has been built subsequently. Near the Hall was a chapel and a small graveyard which once belonged to the Howard family, who were great landowners in these parts.

One airless summer night the men sat with their sister watching the moon rise. After a time they decided to go to bed. The sister lay in her bed, the bedclothes cast off because of the heat. She had closed her window, but not fastened the shutters. She gazed out of her window, propped up on her pillows as the long summer day faded out and night took its place. In Cumbria at midsummer, because it is quite far north, it does not get very dark at all between sunset and sunrise.

Miss Cranswell soon became aware of two lights in the belt of trees some distance from the house which separated the lawn from the graveyard. She watched and, after a while, she made out a dark shape moving towards the house and towards her window. A terrible horror seized her. She wanted to get up and leave the room, but to go to the door would have meant she had to go closer to the window. Besides she had locked the door from the inside and so would have to stand there and unlock it...all the while clearly visible to whatever was out there. Frozen to the spot, she stared at the shape...but then it turned and instead of moving closer to her window, it started to move around the house. She jumped up and ran towards the door. Her hands were shaking so much that she found it hard to turn the key. And then her heart nearly stopped. Behind her, close to her though she didn't dare look, she heard a scratching at the window. It was outside...just feet away. She stood there petrified with fear still not turning her head. Then she heard the sound of it unpicking the lead which held the glass in place. She forced herself to look and saw that one pane of the mullioned glass had come away and a long bony hand stretched in and turned the window catch. Whatever it was, it came in through the window with a rush and grabbed her...its fingers in her hair, its mouth at her throat. It bit her neck and forced her onto the ground. As it bit her she screamed.

Her brothers heard the noise and came and battered at the locked door. The creature looked up as the door was broken open...it turned and fled out of the window, leaving her lying on the floor, bleeding profusely from a wound at her neck. One brother clambered out of the window and went after it. But it was fast and before he could catch it...perhaps it was lucky for him that he didn't. It disappeared into the inky blackness around the graveyard.

Trying to explain the incident afterward, the girl rationalized that the creature must have been a dangerous lunatic. But she was still horribly shocked and her brothers took her away from Croglin to recover. They stayed away for a while, but then, as autumn came, it was she who urged them to return to Croglin. They had paid for the tenancy, and besides, she joked, it would be very bad luck to come across two escaped lunatics.

They returned to Croglin and spent the winter there. She had the same room, but always closed the wooden shutters. The brothers took to carrying loaded pistols with them around the house. But nothing happened until one night in March.

The sister was lying in bed when she heard a terribly familiar scratching at the window. She struggled to get fully awake and scrabbled for a candle and something to light it with. When she got a flame she saw that the shutters were opened. Staring in at her was a brown shriveled face...she saw its long bony hands picking at the lead of the windows. This time she screamed immediately. Her brothers rushed in with their pistols. She pointed to the window, but the creature had gone. The brothers ran out of the front door and saw it moving across the lawn towards the graveyard. They fired and one of them hit it in the leg. It scrambled away into the darkness and they lost it.

The next day the brothers summoned their neighbors, and with their help, they went into the graveyard. The tenants of nearby Croglin High Hall had also been suffering visits from it and their young daughter had bite wounds at the throat. The father had thought that she had been bitten by a rat, but when the Cranswells said what had happened to their sister, they feared the worst and the father joined the party as it made its way to the graveyard.

One of the locals had heard rumors of a particular vault being home to some monster so they opened it up. They stood around, pistols and other weapons at the ready. The vault was full of coffins but most were smashed and the remains mangled and strewn across the floor. Only one coffin was undisturbed. They lifted the lid and there they saw the mummified and shriveled figure that had moved as if alive the night before. To confirm what they feared they looked at the leg and found a recent wound from a pistol ball. There and then they set fire to the dry coffin and burnt the vampire in it.

In his book Ghosts and Legends of the Lake District, J. A. Brooks says that in the early years of this century, the tenants of Croglin Low Hall had to deal with a fire in the dining room chimney. When the fire died down and they were rebuilding the chimney, they found an ancient burnt corpse in there. Though the tenant wanted to bury the corpse in a churchyard with proper Christian rites, he died before he was able to do this. Some people think that the corpse is still there in the chimney.

Augustus Hare, who had the story printed, said he heard it from a Captain Fisher who leased the property after the Cranswells. He dated the events to around 1875. This immediately aroused suspicion that he had actually adapted certain sequences in a 'penny dreadful novel' possibly by James Malcolm Rymer: Varney The Vampire: Or "The Feast Of Blood"[image error] published in 1847. Penny dreadfuls were deliberately sensational. The books sold for a penny, often authors did not want to admit they wrote them.

In 1924, Charles G. Harper decided to challenge Hare's account of the vampire. He went to Cumberland and could not find Croglin Grange, although he found both a Croglin High Hall and a Croglin Low Hall. There was no church nearby. The closest was a mile away. There was no vault as described by the brothers and the villagers.

Later a man called F. Clive-Ross visited the area and in turn challenged Harper's findings. He interviewed the local people and deduced that Croglin Low Hall was the Grange. He also noted that a chapel had existed near the house and its foundation stones were still there in the 1930s.

Then in 1968, D. Scott Rogo, a writer, using a book published in 1929 that contained both stories concluded that it was likely that one story was based upon the other and therefore Croglin Grange was most likely a hoax.

However, some years later F. Clive-Ross found a witness, Mrs Parkin who lived at Slack Cottage in Ainstable who said she had known one of the Fishers. However, this gentleman was born in the 1860's had heard the story from his grandparents. Mrs Parkin also said that according to the deeds of Croglin Low Hall, it was commonly called Croglin Grange until 1720".

So Hare had made a huge blunder. If the story had taken place it was two centuries earlier in 1680-1700, not the 1870s. Clive-Ross published his research in 'Tomorrow magazine, the spring of 1963'.

More recent research by Lionel Fanthorpe also suggests that the events took place in the late 1600s. A vault close to the Grange was demolished during Cromwell's time. Hence these findings, place the events before the publication of Varney the Vampire.

So what exactly happened? We shall never know. It is possible that Varney's author heard the legend and decided to write about it as a Penny Dreadful. It was said the book was based on events that took place during the reign of Queen Anne (1702-14), near the time of the incident. Maybe Hare used Varney the Vampire for his book or perhaps he heard about the legend independently and wrote his own account. Whatever the truth, the Croglin beast will remain a mystery.

Captain Fisher also told us this really extraordinary story connected with his own family:

Fisher may sound a very plebeian name, but this family is of very ancient lineage, and for many hundreds of years they have possessed a very curious sort of place in Cumberland, which bears the weird name of Croglin Grange. The great characteristic of the house is that never at any period of its very long existence has it been more than one story high, but it has a terrace from which large grounds sweep away towards the Church in the hollow, and a fine distant view.

When, in lapse of years, the Fisher's outgrew Croglin Grange in family and fortune, they were wise enough not to destroy the long-standing characteristic of the place by adding another story to the house, but they went away to the south, to reside at Thorncombe near Guildford, and they let Croglin Grange.

They were extremely fortunate in their tenants, two brothers and a sister. They heard their praises from all quarters. To their poorer neighbours they were all that is most kind and beneficent, and their neighbours of a higher class spoke of them as a most welcome addition to the little society of the neighbourhood. On their part the tenants were greatly delighted with their new residence. The arrangement of the house, which would have been a trial to many, was not so to them. In every respect Croglin Grange was exactly suited to them.

The winter was spent most happily by the new inmates of Croglin Grange, who shared in all the little social pleasures of the district, and made themselves very popular. In the following summer, there was one day which was dreadfully, annihilatingly hot. The brothers lay under the trees with their books, for it was too hot for any active occupation. The sister sat in the verandah and worked, or tried to work, for, in the intense sultriness of that summer day, work was next to impossible. They dined early, and after dinner they still sat out in the verandah, enjoying the cool air which came with evening, and they watched the sun set, and the moon rise over the belt of trees which separated the grounds from the churchyard, seeing it mount the heavens till the whole lawn was bathed in silver light, across which the long shadows from the shrubbery fell as if embossed, so vivid and distinct were they.

When they separated for the night, all retiring to their rooms on the ground floor (for, as I said, there was no upstairs in that house), the sister felt that the heat was still so great that she could not sleep, and having fastened her window, she did not close the shutters - in that very quiet place it was not necessary - and, propped against the pillows, she still watched the wonderful, the marvellous beauty of that summer night. Gradually she became aware of two lights, two lights which flickered in and out in the belt of trees which separated the lawn from the churchyard, and as her gaze became fixed upon them, she saw them emerge, fixed in a dark substance, a definite ghastly something, which seemed every moment to become nearer, increasing in size and substance as it approached. Every now and then it was lost for a moment in the long shadows which stretched across the lawn from the trees, and then it emerged larger than ever, and still coming on - on. As she watched it, the most uncontrollable horror seized her. She longed to get away, but the door was close to the window and the door was locked on the inside, and while she was unlocking it, she must be for an instant nearer to it. She longed to scream, but her voice seemed paralysed, her tongue glued to the roof of her mouth.

Suddenly, she never could explain why afterwards, the terrible object seemed to turn to one side, seemed to be going round the house, not to be coming to her at all, and immediately she jumped out of bed and rushed to the door, but as she was unlocking it, she heard scratch, scratch, scratch upon the window, and saw a hideous brown face with flaming eyes glaring in at her. She rushed back to the bed, but the creature continued to scratch, scratch, scratch on the window. She felt a sort of mental comfort in the knowledge that the window was securely fastened on the inside. Suddenly the scratching sound ceased. And a kind of pecking sound took its place. Then, in her agony, she became aware that the creature was unpicking the lead! The noise continued, and a diamond pane of glass fell into the room. Then a long bony finger of the creature came in and turned the handle of the window, and the window opened, and the creature came in; and it came across the room, and her terror was so great that she could not scream, and it came up to the bed and twisted its long bony fingers in her hair, and it dragged her head over the side of the bed, and - it bit her violently in the throat.

As it bit her, her voice was released, and she screamed with all her might and main. Her brothers rushed out of their rooms, but the door was locked on the inside. A moment was lost while they got a poker and broke it open. Then the creature had already escaped through the window, and the sister, bleeding violently from a wound in the throat, was lying unconscious over the side of the bed. One brother pursued the creature, which fled before him through the moonlight with gigantic strides, and eventually seemed to disappear over the wall into the churchyard. Then he rejoined his brother by the sister's bedside. She was dreadfully hurt and her wound was a very definite one, but she was of strong disposition, not given either to romance or superstition, and when she came to herself she said, 'What has happened is most extraordinary and I am very much hurt. It seems inexplicable, but of course there is an explanation, and we must wait for it. It will turn out that a lunatic has escaped from some asylum and found his way here.' The wound healed and she appeared to get well, but the doctor who was sent for to her would not believe that she could bear so terrible a shock so easily, and insisted that she must have change, mental and physical; so her brothers took her to Switzerland.

Being a sensible girl, when she went abroad, she threw herself at once into the interests of the country she was in. She dried plants, she made sketches, she went up mountains, and, as autumn came on, she was the person who urged that they should return to Croglin Grange. 'We have taken it,' she said, 'for seven years, and we have only been there one; and we shall always find it difficult to let a house which is only one story high, so we had better return there; lunatics do not escape every day.' As she urged it, her brothers wished nothing better, and the family returned to Cumberland. From there being no upstairs in the house, it was impossible to make any great change in arrangements. The sister occupied the same room, but it is unnecessary to say she always closed her shutters, which, however, as in many old houses, always left one top pane of the window uncovered. The brothers moved, and occupied a room together exactly opposite that of their sister, and they always kept loaded pistols in their room.

The winter passed most peacefully and happily. In the following March the sister was suddenly awakened by a sound she remembered only too well - scratch, scratch, scratch upon the window, and looking up, she saw, climbed up to the topmost pane of the window, the same hideous brown shrivelled face, with glaring eyes, looking in at her. This time she screamed as loud as she could. Her brothers rushed out of their room with pistols, and out of the front door. The creature was already scudding away across the lawn. One of the brothers fired and hit it in the leg, but still with the other leg it continued to make way, scrambled over the wall into the churchyard, and seemed to disappear into a vault which belonged to a family long extinct.

The next day the brothers summoned all the tenants of Croglin Grange, and in their presence the vault was opened. A horrible scene revealed itself. The vault was full of coffins; they had been broken open, and their contents, horribly mangled and distorted, were scattered over the floor. One coffin alone remained intact. Of that the lid had been lifted, but still lay loose upon the coffin. They raised it, and there, brown, withered, shrivelled, mummified, but quite entire, was the same hideous figure which had looked in at the windows of Croglin Grange, with the marks of a recent pistol shot in the leg; and they did the only thing that can lay a vampire - they burnt it.

FLYING or WINGED HUMANOID Reports From Poland

Over time I have received several flying or winged humanoid sighting accounts from Poland. Is there a particular tradition of these anomalies in that country?

In late Autumn of 2000, two witnesses encountered a strange flying figure in Koniewo in the northern part of Poland. The tall, long-haired being was flying in an unusual position in close vicinity of two terrified witnesses. The observation was accompanied by a strange, loud rumble coming out of the forest.

The being was well visible. It was flying with its face turned to us. It was long-haired and about 1.5 – 2 m. (5-6.5 ft) in height! It flew over the road and then disappeared in the branches” – says Mr. Mariusz G. who in 2000 had a weird encounter with a flying figure.

Mariusz G. is a 24-year-old paramedic working in a hospital in Olsztyn – the capital city of Warminsko-Mazurskie Wojewodztwo in northern Poland. He is also studying in Gdansk. In 2007 he decided to relate his encounter with weird flying humanoid that took place in 2000 to Mr. Michal Kusnierz – a member of Polish UFO reporting and researching group NPN.

“It was one of many evenings when I was returning from my buddy in Koniewo (located about 6 km. away from Lidzbark Warminski). There used to be a whole crowd of us there – we used to visit him in free time. About the midway between the city and this village, there is a valley with two sharp curves surrounded by a small forest. That night I was traveling with my colleague. It was late autumn but there was no snow around. It was about 11 p.m.”

“We were returning by bikes. We were talking, as I can remember, about our colleague who opened a gym in his cellar. We found ourselves on a straight path nearing the mentioned valley. Although it was late the Moon enlightened all around.”

After about 70 – 100 m. (230 – 300 ft) something urged me to look right. We were pedaling slowly when suddenly a figure flying along the forest rim appeared. It was very well visible! It was flying with its face turned to us. Then we stopped. My colleague without resistance threw the bicycle away and began to flee, as every normal man in a similar situation”, he recalls.

“Personally, I don’t believe in ghosts and I was never interested in similar matters therefore I began to search for some rational explanation. With my heart in my mouth for several or dozen seconds I remained focused on this extraordinary event. To my fear, I could hear terrifying sounds coming out of the forest. It was a loud band and I find it difficult to compare it to anything.”

The witness stated that the sound resembled a loud and terrifying rumble after some time began fading to start again for a while.

“I regretted then that I hadn’t fled away with my colleague. Then I turned back and crying I began pedaling to catch my colleague who was already beyond my sight range. I caught him already in the vicinity of the village. We then returned to our buddy's home asking his mother to give us a lift.”

The whole experience of then-17-year-old Mariusz lasted more than a minute. The other (then 22-year-old) witness fled away just after seeing the flying humanoid that remained in their sight for several seconds.

When both of the witnesses found themselves again on the road they couldn’t see the being again.

He describes the flying figure:

“It was flying on its side with its face facing us. It was long-haired and about 1.5 – 2 m. in height. It appeared above the road and then disappeared in the branches. It wasn’t equipped with any device – it was simply levitating being on its side and flying ahead. It was a gray figure, the face wasn’t visible and there was no possibility to guess its sex. Was it dressed? It’s a good question… It was about 100 m. awaY, it was gray… I rather cannot say anything about its clothing. The body outline was detectable as well as long hair. I also could notice the other end of the figure, i.e. its feet. The entire figure was light-gray, as if a shadow…”

Mariusz stated that at first, he took it for some kind of mirage, and therefore he decided to remain in place for a while and observe. “Then all the illusions faded away and I thought only how to reach my colleague.”

“I had never thought that I met something like this in my life” – the witness added. “For me, it was something provoking my fear and terror. It left a trace in me because I was extremely panicked. It is still today that when I talk about it I feel some kind of uneasiness inside…” - npn.org.pl

I received a report of a possible flying humanoid sighting in Borne Sulinowo, Poland:

On this particular day, Mrs. Izydora from Szczecinek, northern Poland went with her husband on a trip to Borne Sulinowo area. The man parked their car and soon they departed. While her husband went toward the local forest, Mrs. Izydora decided to stroll amongst the ruins of the local military base. It was about 1-2 p.m.

Suddenly woman felt strange but decided to walk further. After a while, she unexpectedly noticed in mid-air some kind of semi-transparent entity. As she said, it looked like a “misty figure” of a man hovering several meters above the ground. Mrs. Izydora (71) could see its exact shape since the silhouette was outlined by a whitish contour making it quite noticeable.

For some time the witness remained as if paralyzed and unable to scream while the being was hovering nearly directly above her. It remained in the air at a distance of a few meters and kept its arms stretched “as if preparing to flight”. After a while of observation woman decided to retreat to her car parked nearby.

The scared woman began her retreat to the car, but then she noticed that the being started to follow her and rapidly flew above disappearing in the nearby woods. Then a woman called her husband and forced him to leave the place immediately. She told him about the weird incident two days later.

The woman used the word “male” in the description of the being’s appearance. As she told the being despite the lack of distinctive details of appearance had a solid and massive shape, resembling a tall man. It moved smoothly and without any sound. Mrs. Izydora said that the being seemed to be “misty” with a distinct outline.

The whole observation lasted a few minutes but Mrs. Izydora couldn’t recall it exactly. Another interesting fact is some kind of possible influence on the witness's physical condition. Mrs. Izydora felt weak but it isn’t clear if it was connected to the being appearance. The other feeling was paralysis which prevented her from calling their husband. A strange feeling passed away as soon as being disappeared in the woods.

As it is mentioned above Mrs. Izydora decided to talk about the incident after a few days. We talked to her more than half a year after the encounter and she still was frightened. She told us that she never expected to experience such an encounter with something she could not explain rationally. Besides Mrs. Izydora is an open-minded person she doesn’t want to come back to that place even though previously it was often visited by her and her husband.

NOTE: The 'Flying Humanoid' phenomenon has been around for centuries, but there has been more attention given to these reports since the sightings in northern Mexico almost 2 decades ago. Are these actual humans or mystical anomalies (Witches - as suggested by some of the Mexican witnesses). Possibly a cryptid being or an alien entity? Lon

England's PHANTOM BLACK HOUNDS: Do They Still Roam?

The fiery red eyes and the blood-curdling howls of ghostly Black Dogs have long haunted the pages of British literature.

From Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles to the sinister Padfoot in the tales of Harry Potter, time and again nailbiting stories have been woven around the legend of mythical huge dogs.

Whether such tales are just fiction is now open to doubt.

In recent years reports have continued to emerge of wolf-like Black Dogs seen roaming the country. Now zoologists and experts in the paranormal are calling for a probe to prove their existence.

Richard Freeman, zoological director at the Centre for Fortean Zoology in Bideford, Devon, said Black Dogs have been reported in Britain, across Europe, and in South America. He said: “I would welcome support for a thorough investigation into their existence.

“If one could be captured on film or filmed with a thermal camera it might give us a clue to the nature of these creatures.” A report in this month’s Countryfile magazine details the legend of more than a dozen Black Dogs with such wild names as the Yell Hound of Devon, the Lean Dog of Tring, the Padfoot of Wakefield, the Gurt Dog of the Quantocks, Mauthe Dhoog of the Isle of Man and the Gwyligi of Wales.

Dr Simon Sherwood, senior lecturer in psychology, and director of the Centre for the Study of Anomalous Psychological Processes at the University of Northampton, said: “Sightings of Black Dogs are certainly not just legendary accounts from hundreds of years ago. I still receive accounts from people who have been looking for information about similar sightings and have come across my website.

“I have probably collected about 50 or 60 accounts from around the world over the past 10 years or so and some of these are recent sightings.”

Sightings of the Black Hound have been reported all over England since the early 1500s up until the present day. The Black Hound is often described as an abnormally large jet-black dog the size of a cow or a bear, with large claws, fangs, matted or shaggy fur, and glowing red eyes.

Many believe the Black Hound to be a beast, however, as folklore goes the Black Hound is believed to be a phantom or ghost dog. The Black Hound is mostly a nocturnal apparition, often said to be associated with the Devil. The most common sightings of the Black Hound are at points that act like boundaries such as gates, fences, hedges, bridges, roads, and paths, and many sightings at graveyards and burial grounds.

Folklore claims that the Black Hounds travel leylines, these are essentially paths that the spirits are said to travel. In old folklore, the leylines are said to connect graveyards and lead to the spirit world. The Black Hound is seen as an omen of death.

There are lots of stories about Black Hounds terrorizing villages and attacking travelers, not many of which report sounds from the beast that are out of the ordinary, however, some have reported a terrifying howl and even that the hound was maniacally laughing.

Accounts of the Black Hounds attacking aren’t uncommon. Suffolk, UK 1577, one Sunday it is claimed a Black Hound made its way into a church, two men who were touched by the beast fell down dead and a third man seemed to have died from severe burns.

Another account tells also of a Black Hound entering a town hall and physically killing two men before escaping.

Even now there are common sightings of the Black Hound. In 2003 a teenager reported seeing a Black Hound when on his way home around midnight, apparently the hound was seen lurking around the bottom of a tree next to a hedge (boundary) and was described as a large Black Hound with matted fur just a little smaller than a cow.

Other phantom dogs are more benevolent and stories exist of people being helped from tight spots. For example, Augustus Hare in his book 'In My Solitary Life' recounts a common tale he heard about a man called Johnnie Greenwood, of Swancliffe. Johnnie had to ride through wood in darkness for a mile to get to where he was going. At the entrance of the wood he was joined by a black dog, it pattered beside him until he emerged from the trees, whereupon it disappeared as quickly as it had arrived.

On his return journey through the woods, the dog joined him again on the dark woodland path and disappeared mysteriously when he emerged. Apparently, some years later, two prisoners condemned to death confessed that they had decided to rob and murder Johnny that night in the woods, but the presence of the large black dog had stopped them.

Black dogs are also seen as guardians of treasure, especially in Scotland. A black dog was said to guard treasure buried under a standing stone near Murthley in Perthshire, here we have an account of a black dog at an ancient site as a guardian of treasure.

In summary, it seems that the phenomena of phantom dogs is a complex mix of folklore, sightings, and local superstition, which has roots reaching far into the past. There are probably a myriad of different explanations for modern sightings, and a phantom black dog is a powerful archetype, incorporated into modern stories such as the 'Hound of the Baskervilles' by Arthur Conan Doyle. We hope to delve into the mystery further in the future, including some of the many folk tales associated with them.

Further Comments: A large black dog ran in front of two women traveling to Leeming Bar by car. The driver closed her eyes and braked hard, expecting to hit the creature. The passenger watched the hound pass through the bonnet and noticed the creature had no facial features, floppy ears, and was shadow-like. A man that the women spoke to once they reached their destination later killed himself - was the hound a portent?

Red Eyed Dog
Location: Ailsworth (Northamptonshire) - General area

Further Comments: This huge hound possesses eyes that burn as bright as the sun, making the creature easy to spot if he tries to sneak up on you.

Running Hound
Location: Alfriston (Sussex) - Between the Downs and Town Fields

Further Comments: A large black dog is said to run from the Downs to Town Fields - here it stares over a flint wall before retreating the way it came.

White Dog
Location: Alfriston (Sussex) - The White Way, a road leading from the town towards Seaford

Further Comments: This creature is reportedly the dog of a young man murdered while out walking during the 1700s - because the pitiful hound sat by the victim's shallow grave, the criminals killed it also. The haunting is said to have ceased after the bodies of the dog and owner were discovered when the road was widened.

Long Necked Dog
Location: Algarkirk (Lincolnshire) - Area around the village church

Further Comments: This black dog was described by a witness as being tall and lean, with a long neck and a protruding muzzle. The hound is not regarded here as an ill omen.

Dog in Trees

Further Comments: This large black hound was seen between three trees that grow close to the religious house.

Hound
Location: Allington (Wiltshire) - Area between the village and All Cannings

Further Comments: The story of the black dog was used to frighten children in this area. One man may have been chased by the creature (though it was dark and stated it might have been a pony), while another couple who spotted the hound said it stood almost as tall as their pony.

Grey Greyhound
Location: Alphamstone (Essex) - Sycamore Farm
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: One night during the late '40s.
Further Comments: After seeing a creature in his chicken coop, a farmer fired a shotgun at the creature - it ran through the wire netting and escaped. Examining the scene in the morning, the farmer could find no holes in the netting or footprints of the dog.

Black Dog
Location: Alveston (Warwickshire) - Exact location not known
Type: Shuck

Further Comments: Charles Walton (the same man who was murdered in Lower Quinton (see Quinton database entry for further information)) claimed to have seen a phantom black dog for several successive nights when he was younger - on the last night, instead of the dog, he saw a ghostly headless woman. He soon heard that his sister had died at roughly the same time as the last sighting.

Further Comments: Mistakenly blamed for killing a child, it was later discovered that the dog had tried to defend the infant from a wolf (a la Gelert). However, this hound was less forgiving for its former master's murderous action and now runs around the dense woodland.

Monkey-faced Shuck

Further Comments: For reasons unknown, the shuck which has been observed in this area is believed to have a bald head and wide eyes, similar to that of a monkey, while the body is that of a large black shaggy dog. It leaps out in front of cars travelling along this road, only to dart out of the way at the last possible second, either on all four legs or standing upright.

Further Comments: This phantom dog stands as tall as a very large collie, and is said to belong to the fairies.

Rough-Coated Dog with Large Yellow Eyes
Location: Barham (Suffolk) - Along the main Norwich Road, Barham Church Lane, just past Barham Hall gates.

Further Comments: The dog harassed a couple of men walking back from work - one of them reported trying to hit the creature with a stick, but the piece of wood passed straight through the dog's body. Another version of the story states the dog disappears into a solid wall.

Red Eyed Hound

Further Comments: This large black dog with glowing eyes is said to have driven a local farmer mad after the man tried to block the creature's path. The farmer was also left almost completely paralyzed. The hound is said to walk from the churchyard to a nearby marshland before fading from view.

Real-Life McDONALD'S 'HAMBURGLAR' Character Seen in Downtown Edmonton! OZ EFFECT?

An Edmonton, Alberta girl and her mother are downtown when she notices an individual that looks like 'The Hamburglar' character from the McDonald's ads.

1978 / Edmonton, Alberta, Canada:

Patti was in downtown Edmonton, Alberta with her mother and sister during the day. She claims that she encountered an entity that reminded her of ‘The Hamburglar’, a McDonald’s character that appeared in commercials and print advertisements starting in 1971.

“Me and my mom and my sister we were walking down the street in this old neighborhood (in Edmonton) and we turned the corner and in front of us was this man running, like, not in a pinstripe suit but in stripe pants and shirt and a black cape and a big black hat and the mask on his face and he was kind of running and I pointed to my mom, or I pointed, I'm like, ‘Mom, it's the Hamburglar!’ and she was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ He was right in front of us, not very, right in front of us but we turned the corner and he wasn't far in front of us. He was running in front of us and kept looking back and I'm like, ‘Mom, it's the Hamburglar! It's the Hamburglar!’ every time I said it, she was getting mad, like, ‘What are you talking about? Stop!’ So I didn't know what her problem was, like, why what was a big deal about me pointing out the Hamburglar?

I stopped bugging her, and I just started watching this guy. He was running down the street and he did look like ‘The Hamburglar’ but like, a man (like a live version of the cartoon character), he was running but he was running in slow motion and he'd look back at us every once in awhile while he was running. He's running in slow motion and he was even running almost side by side, I remember, with two women on the sidewalk and they didn't even notice him and it looked kind of miragey where he was, so I just kept watching. I couldn't understand. I didn't know anything about physics or anything then but it just seemed very weird to me.” He looked at them one more time before rounding the corner and vanishing... It was in slow motion and it was a mirage and there was, kind of like, he's laughing, but there was no sound and nobody else seemed to notice him.”

Patti also later mentioned that the street seemed to get quiet [editor’s note: this coupled with the mirage appearance, the slow motion movements of the entity, it sounds like the 'Oz Effect?'] when he appeared and she clarified if he was wearing a mask or not. Given her age, she was not 100% certain that he was but she believed that he might have been. The rest of the details she believes were accurate.

'THEY' Changed Me! TERRORIZED by my ALIEN CAPTORS

An outright strange series of close encounter events causes the experiencer to suffer severe PTSD and undergo multiple rounds of electroconvulsive therapy.
“I will share my story for the first time, here and now. When I was 14, I had the most traumatic experience of my life. I will never forget it. I was living in a suburb of Minneapolis at the time. It was an extremely hot summer day in August. I was running around with friends in the neighborhood playing tag when I noticed a HUGE grasshopper or locust clinging to the side of my house. I was an odd teen. I used to capture insects and do experiments on them so you can understand how excited I was to see such a big insect within my grasp. I captured the thing and remember thinking it strange how it didn't struggle in my hands. It was super chill even when I threw it in the bathroom sink I had filled with water. I grabbed my notepad to take notes and a bunch of household cleaners we had stored in the cupboard below the kitchen sink. I added a bit of bleach or something and things started going crazy. (Noted. I added several more chemicals over the next 10 minutes or so until the creature was dead, at which point I threw it in the toilet, flushed, and watched it swirl down the drain until it disappeared.)

After I had put the chemicals back in their place, I went into my bedroom to place the notepad back in the drawer of my nightstand. The second I entered the room I saw that damn thing I had just tortured and flushed down the toilet chilling on my little nightstand! I did a double take and sure enough it was there. I approached slowly to examine the insect. When I grabbed the thing between my index finger and thumb the weirdest thing happened. Imagine there is a piece of fabric in the palm of your left hand. It represents the fabric of space and time. Now take your right hand and pinch of piece of that fabric between said fingers and then invert it or pull it inside out so that the bottom of the fabric is now on top. When I grabbed that thing it was as if all of reality had flipped inside out, though. I was a part of that fabric. The fact that I was an observer only created the illusion that I was separate or outside of what I was perceiving around me.

Instantly, I was on my back and paralyzed. Standing over me, one to my left and one to my right, were two very white and tall(er) aliens. Keep in mind, at that point in my life I had never seen the classic, stereotypical image of an alien. It wasn't until I was 19 when I saw the cover of a book titled 'Communion' that I realized that what had tormented me that day were aliens. They had the same big head and huge black eyes as the creature on the cover of that book, except that they were tall and very white, and not the little grey aliens most people describe under hypnosis.

Anyway, the two ETs or demons or whatever they have placed the palm of their hands over my rib cage, and what I experienced at that moment I can only describe as raw terror. It was absolute terror. Electric terror. I couldn't breathe or move or even blink. I couldn't tell you how long it lasted or what happened after. I have no recollection of it ending. I didn't come to in my bedroom or anywhere for that matter. That was it. What I did later that day or who I talked with about the experience is unknown to me. All I know is that from that moment on I have been a different person. It was the defining moment of my life.

A year or so ago, I got a little buzzed and called my dad to talk. I asked him something I had wanted to ask him for years but never dared to do so because I didn't really want to know. I asked him if he or mom ever noticed anything strange about me when I was a child and if I had said anything about what I was going through, as I had always suffered from what I can only describe as being severe night terrors. I was afraid to go to bed. In fact, it had a severe impact on my youth. What my dad said actually caused me to start hyperventilating and I had to end the phone call. He reluctantly said that, yes, they had noticed something very strange and had even had me exorcised, even though neither my mom nor dad are religious...AT ALL. I was also the subject of extensive neuro-psyche testing at the University of Minnesota. In hindsight, it all made sense. I remember the doctors and scientists. They even came to visit me at my elementary school on a daily and then weekly basis. My dad simply said that he would describe what he was witnessing as being almost.....alien. That was the word that brought on my panic during that phone call. I had to hang up.

What makes this so compelling to me is the fact that I had never been into science fiction, aliens, or mythology. In fact, I thought it was downright stupid. I became a hardcore materialist reductionist scientist later in life. I rejected everything I had had personal experience with for many years. It was as if I was in denial? I was in denial. I am just now trying to reconcile this experience and others of a more supernatural nature. The experience I described here was the first and last experience I had involving ETs (as far as I know).

I am now 52. I have severe PTSD and have undergone multiple series of electroconvulsive therapy. I have been hospitalized numerous times over the years for major depression and PTSD. I cannot for the life of me understand why I have PTSD but I am considering the possibility that there is more going on than I am conscious of. There is something anomalous about me, a quality or ability if you will, that I have never shared nor will I ever share. I know better than to share such things with psychiatrists or therapists. The eyes cannot see what the mind does not know.” W

New Zealander Experiences LOST TIME & BIZARRE 'HUMANOID JOURNEY!'

A New Zealander loses 5 days during a 3-hour drive. The experiencer is referred to a psychologist who turns out to be something other than human. This is a very weird account!

"Sir, I have read many of your reader's experiences. Because of your presentation, I have decided to come forward with a personal event that happened to me in 1987 while living in New Zealand. You have my permission to post this for your readers.

One January morning, I set off on what should have been no more than a 3-hour drive to Auckland, NZ. I arrived at my destination feeling extremely tired and confused. When I went to the hotel front desk to check in, I was told that I had no room reservation. Then, after the desk clerk checked the records, I was stunned to learn that I had lost 5 days and had no idea where I had been.

Luckily, there was a vacancy, so I checked in and went right to the room. After a quick shower and a bite to eat, I decided to grab a nap. I lay there wondering what had happened to me and that I might as well drive back home because I missed all of the appointments I had scheduled.

Eventually, I drifted off to sleep but would wake up every hour or so feeling nervous and helpless. The next day, I drove back home. After a few days, though, I continued to experience extreme anxiety. I called my GP and was able to see him the next day. I didn't tell the doctor about my experience but did explain my nervousness and lack of sleep. Sensing this was more than a physical ailment, he suggested I see an anxiety therapist. After several sessions with the therapist, who I confided in about the lost time, I was recommended to a psychologist who had dealt with this phenomenon before.

A week later, I went to see the psychologist. As soon as I saw him, I had an instinctive feeling this was going to be an unusual session. He was fairly young with short blonde hair. His mannerisms were unlike those of any person I have ever met though, I just couldn't put a finger on why I felt this way. I sat down in a large leather chair directly facing the doctor. He stared at me for almost a minute, then smiled and asked me to tell him what I remembered. All of a sudden, a large flash seemed to hit me in the face and I was able to remember being escorted on board a huge craft by a tall and thin female dressed in a dark gray leotard. Her body features were human-like, similar figure with hips and breasts but a slightly larger head. Her nose, mouth, ears, and hair looked human-like but her eyes were large and round with onyx black pupils. I suppose she could be termed as a 'humanoid'. She directed me to a room where I was told (in English) to wait.

Soon, I was approached by three other humanoids, one tall, looking like the previous female humanoid, the second a bit shorter, and male. The third was a very short and stout male and walked ahead of the other two. All three had similar facial features except the short, stout humanoid had a small mouth and nose. I was struck with an almost overpowering feeling of his presence as if he possessed an energy that was being projected then reabsorbed by his body. The short humanoid said, "Welcome" and told me that he was the designated “guardian” of this section. The humanoids seemed to communicate with each other by using telepathy and various hand motions.

I was shown another "world" and arrived at a huge metropolis, which was very neat and orderly. I noticed when the craft landed that the city lacked any tall buildings and most of the buildings were pyramid-shaped dwellings made of what appeared to be a transparent but tinted material. I was taken to a residential area with children who were playing just like human children. The buildings here were cylinder-shaped and opaque. The color inside the buildings was mostly a bright white with a touch of silver, gray, and red inside. A soft light seemed to radiate from everything and all the residents seemed so peaceful.

After what seemed like a few minutes, I remember sitting in my car parked in front of the hotel in Auckland. Then I hear the words "Is that everything?". I opened my eyes and looked directly at the doctor, but this time he had transformed into the small, stout humanoid wearing a business suit. He simply said "Hello...did you enjoy your journey" and I attempted to reply but could not speak. Then he told me to wait here and walked through a side door in the office.

Several minutes later, the secretary walked in, shocked when she saw me, and inquired to who I was and why I was in the doctor's office. I told her that the doctor had just left. She gave me the oddest look, then told me the doctor was out all day on an emergency. She then asked if I would care to reschedule an appointment. Still taken aback, I replied that I would call back later.

I never figured out how I got into the psychologist's office and why the small, stout humanoid confronted me there. Since that time, I have never had another experience.

I wonder if others have had a similar encounter?

A Siskiyou County, CA resident comes forward with his encounter with a massive Bigfoot while he was driving in Klamath National Park.

I received the following account:

"I decided to come forward with an encounter I had in early September. I live in Etna, California (Siskiyou County) and occasionally go out to enjoy the nature in Klamath National Park, which is nearby. I've lived in the area all my 38 years, and I've heard all the stories about Bigfoot. There was a well-known story about a possible Bigfoot seen in the Marble Mountain Wilderness several years ago. In fact, there was a video associated with the incident. I'm not sure what that sighting was, but many locals believe it was a Bigfoot. I didn't really believe in Bigfoot until my encounter.

It was late afternoon, and I was driving along Sawyers Bar Rd. out near the old reservation area. I was hauling some supplies for a friend. It was kind of overcast, but not raining. As I was driving, I noticed something big and dark moving up towards the road from the Etna Creek ravine on my right. It startled me because I just didn't understand what it could be. This thing was very large and tall, and it was moving at a fast clip.

As it got up to the road, it grabbed a small pine tree and pulled itself up over the edge. It flung itself onto the road and vaulted the width in a long leap. There is a steep rise in the trees on the left side, but it ran up the slope like there was nothing to it.

Well, it was definitely what people describe as a Bigfoot, but the size of this particular creature was astounding. It had to be at least 8 ft. tall and the body was all massive defined muscle, covered in thick reddish brown hair that had a strange sheen. Not like it was reflecting light, but that it looked 'oily.' I didn't get a very good look at the face, but it definitely had a human likeness. It crossed the road no more than 50 ft. in front of me. I hit the gas pedal and didn't stop until I reached my destination.

When I finally stopped and got out of my truck, my knees were shaking and weak. I had to get back in the cab, fearing I would collapse to the ground. I sat there for about 10 minutes trying to gather my thoughts, realizing I had actually seen a Bigfoot.

I told my brother-in-law what I had seen. He has never believed in Bigfoot, but he was interested in what I told him. He is a hunter and fisherman who spends a lot of time out in the forest. He says that he's never seen a Bigfoot or come across any evidence, but I'm not sure that is the truth.

ANOMALOUS, BRIGHT BLUE 'LIGHT' Strikes Young Baseball Player in the Back!

The witness is at a youth league baseball game in Scranton, PA. He observes a bright, anomalous blue light exit the nearby woods and strikes a boy in the outfield dropping him to the ground.

I received the following account:

"I wanted to tell you about an incident that happened when I was in high school in 1974. I lived in a town near Scranton, Pennsylvania. The neighbor kid had a little league game one late summer afternoon and his mom asked if I could drive him to the field. I volunteered to bring him back home also since I didn't have anything else going on.

The kids were 10-12 years old, but I didn't mind sitting there with other kids and parents. I'd say that about 20 people are watching the game.

At about 4:30 pm the game was winding down. I happened to be looking into the outfield watching the kid in center field (not the neighbor boy). He was turning around and looking towards the woods behind him. No one else was paying attention to him. I kept watching him. He looked like he was getting antsy and concerned about something behind him. Then a bright blue light shot out of the woods and hit this kid in the back. It dropped him face-first to the ground. The kid in the right field shouted out and everyone took notice, running toward the outfield.

The boy looked fine because he started to sit up before anyone got to him. Nobody saw the light that hit the kid and he didn't mention anything about seeing something in the woods. He was wobbly, so one of the adults carried him to their car. I supposed they took him to the hospital.

The funny thing is that I never heard anything further about the incident. In fact, according to my younger sister who knew the boy, he never came back to school after summer vacation.

I never did mention the blue light because I was scared people would think I was nuts. Many years later, I wonder if I should report the details to the authorities? Do you have an idea of what the blue light was?" M

Did Edmonton, Alberta Child Encounter a MANIFESTING 'WENDIGO' or 'CRAWLER?'

An Edmonton, Alberta child was lying in bed when she observed an unknown entity crawling out from the closet. She states now that it reminded her of the Wendigo in the 'Until Dawn' game.

1978 / Edmonton, Alberta, Canada:

"Patti (no last name given), then 4, was lying in bed trying to sleep when she observed something come out of her closet.

“I heard this noise coming from the closet directly at the foot of my bed, so I looked to where I heard that noise and this thing - the head and its arms - came crawling around the edge of the bed and it was growling. It had crawled up on my bed, at the foot of my bed and I laid back down quickly and covered myself up.”

She described the creature: “It was just all skin and bone. It was kind of a tan color, completely hairless, big black eyes, this roundish head, and the features on the head, except for the eyes, actually were pretty small, like, I don't remember much for ears or a nose, it was maybe even kind of like human-like but small compared to the eyes... Its skin was like a burn victim but not.”

The closest she could compare it to was the Wendigo from the game ‘Until Dawn.’ When she pulled the covers back down, the creature was still there.

“It just came right up over the top of me, not on me, but, you know, its legs and its arm, knees, I'm guessing, whatever, were right beside, me struggling and he just started yelling at me, like screaming at me in a kind of, I guess, a demonic voice. I never really knew what it said I just knew it was yelling at me and it wasn't gibberish, and it was mad. It was so mad at me.”

She felt that it was struggling to remove the covers but was unable, like something was hindering his ability to remove them. Years later, Patti wondered why she never screamed... She remembered thinking of it at the moment but never did, which she found odd. That was her last memory of the encounter."
