AMERICA'S FIRST SEA SERPENT Sighting

The first American sea serpent sighting took place off the coast of New England near Cape Ann, Massachusetts in 1639. The creature would eventually become known as “Gloucester’s Sea Serpent,” named after the harbor just north of Boston.

The harbor of Gloucester, Massachusetts is located just north of Boston on the lower part of Cape Ann which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. Gloucester has always been a seafaring town. Its harbor is well protected from Atlantic storms, making it a destination for ships hauling cargo. In the 17th century, fish abounded off the coast ready to be caught by enterprising and brave men willing to go to the sea in boats. If any group of people should have known the sea and local inhabitants, it should have been the fishermen and sailors of Gloucester.

One of the earliest sightings of an animal that would haunt the coast of New England was in 1638. The monster was first reported in An account of two voyages to New-England : made during the years 1638, and 1663[image error] by John Josselyn, who wrote:

“They told me of a sea serpent, or snake, that lay quoiled up like a cable upon the rock at Cape Ann; a boat passing by with English on board, and two Indians, they would have shot the serpent, but the Indians dissuaded them, saying that if he were not killed outright, they would all be in danger of their lives.”

Three years later, Obadiah Turner reported a similar incident near Lynn, Massachusetts, where he allegedly saw a serpent as wide as a wine pipe and around 27 meters (90 ft) in length:

Some being on ye great beache gathering of calms and seaweed wch had been cast thereon by ye mightie storm did spy a most wonderful serpent a shorte way off from ye shore. He was big round in ye thickest part as a wine pipe; and they do affirm that he was fifteen fathoms [90 feet] or more in length. A most wonderful tale. But ye witnesses be credible, and it would be of no account to them to tell an untrue tale. Wee have likewise heard yt Cape Ann ye people have seene a monster like unto this, whch did there come out of ye land mch to ye terror of them yet did see him.

While sporadic sightings continued through the 17th and 18th centuries, the serpent had become a seasonal phenomenon by the early 1800s, much like today’s “lake monsters.”

General David Humphreys, a former member of George Washington's staff, traveled down to Gloucester to interview witnesses. According to the testimony he gathered, the creature's head, which it held above the water, was:

"much like the head of a turtle... and larger than the head on any dog. From its head there rose a prong or spear about twelve inches in height, and six inches in circumference at the bottom, and running to a small point."

In a compilation of sightings printed in the Boston Weekly Messenger, it was further reported that the creature was sixty to seventy feet in length, that it was about as wide as a barrel, that it moved rapidly in a serpentine fashion, that it was able to double back upon itself instantaneously, that it was:

"full of joints and resemble[d] a string of buoys on a net, and that all attempts to kill or capture it, including shooting a musket at it from close range, failed."

In August of 1817 when two women claimed they had seen the creature swimming into the harbor. The same sea serpent was seen at almost the same time by the Captain of a coasting vessel. A few days later Mrs. Amous Story said she saw what appeared to be a tree trunk washed up on the rocks of Ten Pound Island which lies in the harbor. As she watched it through a telescope, it moved and when she looked again, it was gone. William Row reported seeing a creature saying "Its head was as broad as a horse or more so, but not quite as long." The same day Amos Story also saw the creature:

It was between the hours of twelve and one o'clock when I first saw him, and he continued in sight for an hour and a half. I was setting on the shore, and was about twenty rods from him when he was the nearest to me. His head appeared shaped mach like that of the sea turtle, and he carried his head from ten to twelve inches above the surface of the water. His head at that distance appeared larger than the head of any dog I ever saw. From the back of his head to the next part of him that was visible, I should judge to be three or four feet. He moved very rapidly through the water, I should say a mile or two or, at most, in three minutes. I saw no bunches on his back. On this day, I did not see more than ten or twelve feet of his body.

Two days later on August 12th Shipmaster Solomon Allen III saw the Gloucester sea serpent:

His head formed something like the head of a rattlesnake, but nearly as large as the head of horse. When he moved on the surface of the water his motion was slow, at times playing in circles, and sometimes moving straight forward.

The creature was even shot at two days later by ship's carpenter Matthew Gaffney from a boat:

I had a good gun, and took good aim. I aimed at his head, and I think I must of hit him. He turned toward us immediately after I had fired, and I thought he was coming at us; but he sunk down and went directly under our boat, and made his appearance at about one hundred yards from where he sunk...

Gaffney also mentions the motion of the creature through the water was "vertical, like a caterpillar."

There were eighteen separate sightings that same year. Observers noted that the creature swam with a vertical motion and his body appeared as "humps" behind him. This report was from Cheever Felch aboard the United States schooner Science:

His colour is dark brown with white under his throat. His size we could not accurately ascertain, but his head is about three feet in circumference, flat and much smaller than his body. We did not see his tail; but from the end of the head to the farthest protuberance was not far from one hundred feet. I speak with a degree of certainty, behing much accustomed to measure and estimate distances and length. I counted fourteen bunches on his back, the first one say ten or twelve feet from this head, and the others about seven feet apart. They decreased in size towards the tail. These bunches were sometimes counted with and sometimes without a glass. Mr. Malborne counted thirteen, Mr. Blake thirteen and fourteen, and the boatman the same number...His motion was partly vertical and partly horizontal, like that of fresh water snakes. I have been much acquainted with snakes in our interior waters. His motion was the same.

In many of the Gloucester reports, though, observers first felt they were viewing something quite normal, but then changed their minds when they got closer. For example, this report by John Brown, published in 1817:

"...I discovered something about three or four miles distant, about two points on the weather bow, which appeared as a mast, as it rose and sunk in a perpendicular manner, once in about eight or ten minutes. I kept the vessel directly for it, and after look at it with my glass, I observed to my mate that i was a wreck, as I could see timbers &c.. sticking up, but as we approached nearer, I found what appeared like timbers to be a number of porpoises and black fish playing and jumping around a large Sea-Serpent, which we had supposed to be the mast."

So what was the Sea Serpent of Gloucester? Most such reports are attributed to simple misidentification. Dolphins leaping in single file might look like a series of humps. The sixteen-foot-long elephant seal might look like a sea monster to someone unfamiliar with the giant seal.

In 1817, the Linnean Society of New England performed one of the first scientific investigations of a sea serpent, providing a list of carefully chosen questions to eyewitnesses in an attempt to discover the creature’s true nature. They concluded that a dead snake that had been found on the coast of Cape Ann was the creature’s progeny and named it Scioliophis atlanticus because of the scalloped shape of its back. Rather than a new species, the snake turned out to be a common black snake with a deformation.

However, the society's pamphlet met with ridicule and inspired the production of numerous fake accounts of the creature. The account was particularly ridiculed in the South, where it inspired the Charleston playwright, William Crafts, to compose a play titled The Sea Serpent; or, Gloucester Hoax: a Dramatic jeu d'esprit in Three Acts. The premise of this play was that the serpent was a hoax, designed to promote the reputation of the town of Gloucester.

Others, however, took the reports of the creature seriously. Jacob Bigelow composed an essay about the creature for Benjamin Silliman's prestigious The American Journal of Science and Arts[image error] Interest in sea serpents reached an even greater pitch in America when there were mass sightings of a serpent off the coast of Nahant in 1819.

The most recent reported sighting of the serpent (or one of its offspring) took place in 1962, off the coast of Marshfield, Massachusetts. Sadly, the author of The Great New England Sea Serpent: An Account of Unknown Creatures Sighted by Many Respectable Persons Between 1638 and the Present Day[image error] J.P. O’Neill, has speculated that centuries of over-fishing off of New England may well have caused the creatures to migrate away from the Gloucester bay area in search of more fertile feeding grounds. Others believe that the change from sail to diesel may have forced the serpents to steer clear of common fishing regions to avoid the noise and pollution of modern fishing vessels.

THE 'JOHN TITOR' LEGEND: Did He Return in 2009?

'John Titor' was a pseudonym used on internet forums between 2000 and 2001 by an individual claiming to be an American military time traveler from the year 2036.

I received the following account:

"What I am about to describe is the truth. It occurred in Saskatchewan, Canada. The precursor to the UFO event began in June 2007 at 9:23 PM. I was living in the city with my mom and was on the computer. A message popped up from my instant messenger with the words, "Agent...[censored]" and "Black Operations", stating that someone would like to add me. I stared at it for a minute and felt amazed. Thinking to myself, "Could it be someone 'in the know' who would like to talk to me? What is 'black operations'?". I eagerly accepted the add request and opened a conversation window. The avatar displayed an emblem of, "U.S. Department of Defense" with a black background. I said, "Hello, Agent...[censored]?" the mysterious person replied and a conversation began. The "agent" told me about how I'm "key" to an "event" in the "future" along with a few "others". Then the agent elaborated a bit about a person from the year 2036 by the name of, "[censored]" (not "John Titor") and that this person was part of a special operations unit with "C204" equipment the team uses. The agent first advised me to walk away from this time traveler because I'd understand when the time came. Later the agent asked if I met the traveler. I have not to this day. Being so confused and amazed at the same time, I wanted to ask a lot of questions and was told that was all the agent was able to say. So I knew a little about the Titor story and sought others for information. A few days later after divulging what had happened, to "Titor" experts, the agent contacted me and said I couldn't be trusted. There was another. I felt I had lost an opportunity to be part of a "top secret" time travel agenda because, after running a quick search on the agent's name, there appeared to be a real-world person. But was I being deceived or cleverly entangled with fact and fiction?" J

THE JOHN TITOR LEGEND

Although there is debate over the exact date it started, on November 02, 2000, a person calling themselves Timetravel_0, and later John Titor, started posting on a public forum that he was a time traveler from the year 2036.

One of the first things he did was post pictures of his time machine and its operations manual. As the weeks went by, more and more people began questioning him about why he was here, the physics of time travel, and his thoughts about our time. He also posted on other forums including the former Art Bell site. In his posts, John Titor entertained, angered, frightened, and even belittled those who engaged him in conversation.

Titor described the time machine on several occasions. In an early post, he described it as a "stationary mass, temporal displacement unit powered by two top-spin, dual positive singularities", producing a "standard off-set Tipler sinusoid". The earliest post was more explicit, saying it contained:

* Two magnetic housing units for the dual micro singularities
* An electron injection manifold to alter mass and gravity micro singularities
* A cooling and X-ray venting system
* Gravity sensors, or a variable gravity lock
* Four main cesium clocks
* Three main computer units

According to the posts, the device was installed in the rear of a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette convertible and later moved to a 1987 truck having four-wheel drive.

Although invoking the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, whereby events from his own timeline may differ from our own, Titor also expressed assurance that the differences were minimal. As such, his descriptions have been interpreted as predictions and compared with historical events since 2001.

The most immediate of Titor’s predictions was of an upcoming civil war in the United States having to do with “order and rights”. He described it as beginning in 2004, with civil unrest surrounding the presidential election of that year. This civil conflict that he characterizes as “having a Waco-type event every month that steadily gets worse” will be “pretty much at everyone’s doorstep” and erupts by 2008.

As a result of the war, the United States split into five regions based on various factors and differing military objectives. This civil war, according to Titor, will end in 2015 with a brief but intense World War III:

In 2015, Russia launched a nuclear strike against the major cities in the United States (which is the “other side” of the civil war from my perspective), China, and Europe.

The United States counterattacks.

The US cities were destroyed along with the AFE (American Federal Empire)...thus we (in the country) won.

The European Union and China were also destroyed.

Titor refers to the exchange as “N Day”. Washington, D.C., and Jacksonville, Florida are specifically mentioned as being hit. After the war, Omaha, Nebraska is the US’s new capital city. Titor is vague as to the exact motivations and causes of World War III. At one point, he characterizes the hostilities as being led by “border clashes and overpopulation”, but also points to the present conflict between Arabs and Jews as not a cause, but rather a milestone that precedes World War III.

Titor claimed that as a 13-year-old in 2011, he fought with the Fighting Diamondbacks, a shotgun infantry unit of Florida, for at least four years. However, in other posts, he describes himself as hiding from the war.

Based on these statements, it's obvious that John Titor was not from the future. If he had been from the future, he would have surely recalled the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the consequences that followed.

On March 21, 2001, John Titor told us he would be leaving and returning to 2036. After that, he was never heard from again. Speculation and investigation about who John Titor was and why he was online continue to this day.

Beware of MAN-EATER PLANTS!

I was watching a TV show when the subject of flesh-eating plants was brought up. They mentioned the Venus Flytrap, even Audrey II from 'Little Shop of Horrors.' Anyway, this is what I found out:

In 1881 German explorer Carl Liche told the tale of a horrid tree that would feast upon the Mdoko tribe of Madagascar. In a terrible ceremony, He watched as the tribe's people would sacrifice one of their own to a man-eating tree. Prodded by javelins a young girl was forced to climb the giant plant which resembled a giant pineapple. The top was fringed with long hairy green tendrils and a set of tentacles surrounding a pool of honey-sweet fluid. As she reluctantly drank from the pool, in Liche's words:

“...slender delicate palpi, with the fury of starved serpents, quivered a moment over her head, then as if instinct with demoniac intelligence fastened upon her in sudden coils round and round her neck and arms; then while her awful screams and yet more awful laughter rose wildly to be instantly strangled down again into a gurgling moan, the tendrils one after another, like great green serpents, with brutal energy and infernal rapidity, rose, retracted themselves, and wrapped her about in fold after fold, ever tightening with cruel swiftness and savage tenacity of anacondas fastening upon their prey.”

In the book Madagascar: Land of the Man-Eating Tree[image error] author Chase Osborn claimed that both the tribes and missionaries on Madagascar knew about the hideous tree, and also repeated the Liche account. Some researchers claim that Liche's recitation was completely fabricated. In fact, Willy Ley, the author of Salamanders and Other Wonders: Still More Adventures of a Romantic Naturalist[image error] stated that no killer tree grew in Madagascar, no Mkodo tribe, and apparently Carl Liche himself never really existed.

In the book Under The Punkah[image error] Phil Robinson recalls the tales of his uncle, who traveled throughout the world. He described a "man-eating tree" that was to be found in the northern Sudan along the Nile Valley. In the account, Robinson's uncle describes the tree:

This awful plant, that rears its splendid death-shade in the central solitude of a Nubian fern forest, sickens by its unwholesome humours all vegetation from its immediate vicinity, and feeds upon the wild beasts that, in the terror of the chase, or the heat of noon, seek the thick shelter of its boughs ; upon the birds that, flitting across the open space, come within the charmed circle of its power, or innocently refresh themselves from the cups of its great waxen flowers ; upon even man himself when, an infrequent prey, the savage seeks its asylum in the storm, or turns from the harsh foot-wounding sword-grass of the glade, to pluck the wondrous fruit that hang plumb down among the wondrous foliage. And such fruit ! Glorious golden ovals, great honey drops, swelling by their own weight into pear-shaped translucencies. The foliage glistens with a strange dew, that all day long drips on to the ground below, nurturing a rank growth of grasses, which shoot up in places so high that their spikes of fierce blood-fed green show far up among the deep-tinted foliage of the terrible tree, and, like a jealous body-guard, keep concealed the fearful secret of the charnel-house within, and draw round the black roots of the murderous plant a decent screen of living green.

J.W. Buel wrote in Sea and Land[image error] that the Ya-te-veo ("I-see-you") plant is native to Africa and Central America, and has stems that resemble "many huge serpents in an angry discussion, occasionally darting from side to side as if striking at an imaginary foe," while attempting to consume humans. It is further described as having a short, thick trunk topped with spine-like shoots with dagger-like thorns along their edges. These barbed shoots hang down to the ground and become suddenly animated when an unsuspecting animal walks between them. The victim is then impaled and crushed against the trunk until it is drained of blood which is then absorbed by the plant.

This description is similar to the 'Devil's Snare' or 'Vampire Vine' which is said to live in the dark recesses of the Nicaraguan jungle. In a short story in Lucifer Magazine, the following was quoted:

Mr. Dunstan, naturalist, who has recently returned from Central America, where he spent nearly two years in the study of the flora and the fauna of the country, relates the finding of a singular growth in one of the swamps which surround the great lakes of Nicaragua. He was engaged in hunting for botanical and entomological specimens, when he heard his dog cry out, as if in agony, from a distance, Running to the spot whence the animal's cries came. Mr. Dunstan found him enveloped in a perfect network of what seemed to be a fine rope-like tissue of roots and fibres... The native servants who accompanied Mr. Dunstan manifested the greatest horror of the vine, which they call "the devil's snare," and were full of stories of its death-dealing powers. He was able to discover very little about the nature of the plant, owing to the difficulty of handling it, for its grasp can only be torn away with the loss of skin and even of flesh; but, as near as Mr. Dunstan could ascertain, its power cf suction is contained in a number of infinitesimal mouths or little suckers, which, ordinarily closed, open for the reception of food. If the substance is animal, the blood is drawn off and the carcass or refuse then dropped.

NOTE: Now, the big question. Are any of these plants real? There are certainly plants in the world that eat meat. Charles Darwin was fascinated by them and spent fifteen years of his life studying them, ex. the Corpse Flower, Venus Flytrap, and other various 'pitcher' plants that consume small mammals and insects that fall into their clutches. As far as man-eating plants that grab and ingest humans or large animals, maybe we should just save it for horror movies. Lon

My Life of EXPERIENCING ODDITIES & UNEXPLAINED EVENTS

A reader contacts me about their lifelong encounters with the supernatural and other various oddities. They are quite detailed. If you'd like to contact me about your experiences, please do so.
I received this interesting email from a reader:

"Mr Strickler. I would like to thank you for all the work you do! Reading your blog has helped me realize that I am not alone in the 'strange experience' arena. I don't mind if you print this letter on your blog, but I would like to remain anonymous.

I was born and raised in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Some people say this is a paranormal hot spot, a place where all manner of the unexplained can be seen or experienced.

Childhood (1960s)

My earliest memory of the strange is of my father sitting at the dinner table telling my mother about an experience he had in the Nat'l Forest one day (he worked for the U.S. Forest Service). He had told my mother about 'feeling' there had been something or someone in the woods with him. He had spoken of hearing a lot of loud noise and the feeling of being watched. He attributed it to poachers. Sasquatch was not a household word at that time.

My mother & I would often go out at night to stargaze. My mother taught me the various constellations and we loved to watch for falling stars. We would often see lights around the small mountain which was located right outside our town (called D mountain because of the large white-washed "D" on the side of the mountain. This "D" stood for the name of our town, Del Norte). These lights would fly erratically and blink on & off.

I experienced "night terrors" frequently from about the age of 7 or 8 up to puberty (as I remember). I remember waking up 'paralyzed' and being scared out of my mind. I couldn't scream or move. I remember a being standing by my bed and there would be another (possibly two) outside of my window (one-level house). I would be able to call out to my mother shortly after waking. But I would only be able to call out in a muffled voice like I was only partially out of the paralyzation. These encounters would occur frequently for a while and then nothing. A few months down the road the encounters would start again. Many, many years later one of my sisters told me that she experienced the same thing but she refused to go into greater detail. This was the same sister who had some mystical/psychic abilities. Months back in your blog you had written about a man who was doing research on these types of night terrors and I wrote to him. The research he was doing on this subject resonated with me, though to this day I have no solid answers as to the cause of this.

I remember having many imaginary friends to play with.

Adolescence (1970s)

I remember being able to have out-of-body experiences. My mother and I would often sit on our closed-in back porch and read or do crafts. I distinctly remember being able to 'hover' against the ceiling and seeing myself and my mother sitting by the table. I couldn't do this on demand but it happened frequently for some time. These experiences only happened at my house.

Paranormal occurrences seemed to subside during my teenage years. Or maybe I just don't remember them. This was the period of cattle mutilations in the San Luis Valley. And Snippy the Horse (occurring in 1967) was still quite fresh in most of the locals' memories. Many friends I had in high school lived out in the country and they would speak of seeing odd lights in the night sky while driving home from a school function or while they were out tending to livestock.

Family History

I thought I would give a bit about myself before I continue. Psychic abilities of various sorts appear to be a family trait. My aunt had premonitions that were always true. I know my mother had some sort of psychic ability though she never spoke of it. I learned herb craft from her.

As for myself, I have prophetic dreams, I can 'feel' spirits, I have an uncanny ability with plants (some people have said that I could grow a broomstick into a tree), and animals flock to me. My normal body temperature is at least 1 1/2 deg below what is normal for everyone else. I have read that many of these traits are attributed to Star Children. All three of my kids have some or all of these abilities/traits. I have always had an interest in the paranormal. More so than most kids/adults of the era.

I have never been able to wear a watch without the watch stopping. Streetlights will go out or blink on/off when I am around. I blow out light bulbs and other electronic devices don't work when I am in an agitated state.

Owls have been a recurring theme in my life. My husband inherited his grandfather's owl collection - any time we have lived in the country, owls could be heard every night - owls pop up in stories I read & shows I watch.

And then there's the matter of my teeth...My wisdom teeth never 'came in'. When I was in my mid-20s, a trip to the dentist showed that my wisdom teeth sat right on a major nerve that ran to the lower part of my face. The dentist did not want to touch them for fear of damaging that nerve. Fast forward 25 years and another trip to the dentist showed that I had a double set of wisdom teeth (both top & bottom) and they were nowhere near the nerve.. Another 5 years pass & I was preparing to have extensive dental work done. I told my dentist about my wisdom teeth. Upon viewing the x-rays, the dentist said she didn't see any wisdom teeth but she did see a top tooth and a bottom tooth that hadn't emerged but they didn't appear to be wisdom teeth nor were they located where wisdom teeth normally are.

In the 90s a small lump appeared overnight on my husband's abdomen. It didn't bother him. A PA looked at it and determined it to be a subcutaneous cyst. Since then several more 'cysts' have appeared. He has not had them x-rayed and they do not bother him. Nor have they grown in size. My husband remembers seeing a tall alien-type being when he was a child.

Adulthood (1980s & 1990s)

I spent a good part of the 80s traveling the country with my Military husband. He & I later divorced. My current husband and I got together a few years later and settled in a small mining town in Colorado (Central City). Oddities began again when we moved there. We lived in a very old log home that dated back to the late 1800s. The front door of the home was the old jailhouse door. There was a dark entity in the loft - I hated going up there & when I did I felt stifled. It was at this time that my interest in Wicca began. I read a lot about it. But Wicca felt too formal for me. So I continued to read on the subject of earth-based religions. I read because finding a group was hard - so many people who worshiped an earth-based religion hadn't come out of the broom closet yet. The Little People made their appearance here at this house. While we never actually saw them, both my husband and myself would hear them and items would go missing only to turn up later in a spot we had looked in for the missing item.

In the early 90s, we moved to another small mountain town outside of Denver, Bailey. It was at this time that the high strangeness began. The area we lived in was to the northwest of the actual town of Bailey - a small community by the name of Harris Park totally surrounded by Nat'l Forest. The people who had lived there for a while spoke of Sasquatch in the woods. We frequently saw black unmarked helicopters fly from the East to the West overhead. They usually flew in pairs, sometimes three. But we never saw them fly from west to east. Occasionally odd lights could be seen to the southwest. The house we lived in was built in the 1950s. We had a picture in the living room that would fall off the wall periodically. We tried to 'make' it fall off the wall and couldn't get it to happen. No matter where we hung the picture, it would fall - the picture was nothing special. A cheap dollar store frame with a print picture of a Plains Indian in it. The song 'Fur Elise by Beethoven' would appear at random on our answering machine. We NEVER left it on the message but yet there it was. When someone would call in and leave a message they would hear it. We tried brand new tapes & again the song would show up. We decided that the resident spirit must like classical music. It was here that my dreams began to become more prophetic in nature. And the night terrors that plagued me when I was a child also returned. However this time they were different - I would 'meet' the beings outside of our house and they would talk to me. The only thing that sticks in my memory is when they gave me the information that both my father and father-in-law and my mother would die all within a year's time frame. Which did come true. And my psychic abilities became more pronounced. I continued to read about Earth Spirits, Shamanism, and other 'mystical' topics. The Little People were still with us.

The Turn of the Century (2000 and beyond)

We moved to Louisiana just before the millennium. We moved into an old house which was once part of an estate and had been the maid's quarters. On occasion, I would hear small children (our youngest son, a junior in high school, was the only child we had left at home at the time) or see shadows out of the corner of my eye. This was a rather quiet time in my life - not a lot of paranormal activity. Though the Little People were always around along with the shadows.

In 2004 we needed to move closer to my husband's grandparents. They were getting up in years and needed someone close by to assist them. They lived in Oklahoma - Grandma was Cherokee. So we bought a house in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas - across the border from where the grandparents lived in Oklahoma. We lived there till 2011. This was a very rural area with a lot of mystique. Many old legends of Civil War treasure and various ghosts, odd vortexes, and areas where nothing would grow. We lived not far from the Heavener Rune Stone. Our house was a huge cinder block house (3000+ sq ft) built by a WWII vet. The house itself seemed very homey but I noticed that men were especially 'taken' with the house. It was as if the house was a woman who was applying her charm to them. We were in the country and completely surrounded by trees. I liked the setting and sort of liked the house but wasn't particularly attached to it. It was towards the end of the time when we lived there that many of the local residents to the east of us were hearing deep booms which would sometimes rattle glass. I personally never experienced or heard any of these booms. Some people thought it might be from the drilling in other parts of the state but the booms continued even after the drilling stopped. We met many people who believed in the paranormal (but wouldn't necessarily publicly speak of it since this was the Buckle of the Bible Belt). We met numerous individuals who had seen or heard Sasquatch in the local forests. The Little People were still with us and seemed to flourish in the woods. They began to influence my art.

In 2011 we moved back to Colorado. We had taken a huge hit when the economy tanked and we were hoping to get back on our feet by the move back to Denver. Our time in Denver was rough - full of stress and strain. Eventually, we moved to the Colorado Springs area and purchased land on the west side of Pikes Peak. It was when we moved into the shadow of Pikes Peak that our luck began to turn around. It seemed that we had been plagued by a black cloud about three years after we had moved to Arkansas. When we began our migration to Colo Sprgs, the rains began and were torrential. Any time we were outside, we were awash in rain. It was almost as if the Universe was cleansing us of the bad mojo that had attached itself to us.

My beliefs have evolved over time. I was never raised in any church. My mother never believed in formal religion even though we would occasionally go to church around a holiday. After much reading - both in print and online - I became more solid in my beliefs. I feel that there are a multitude of spirits, in both Nature and in the Mechanical world - my husband can connect with machinery with an uncanny ability. He laughs about being able to 'lay hands on' an item and it will start working. The writings of Phil Kava and Freddy Silva truly resonate with me. I believe that all things are connected and that vibration or frequency plays a huge part in how we interact with the world/dimensions around us. The more I read, the more comfortable I am with all the strangeness that occurs. I now realize that I am not the only one who has had strange things happen and that I am not crazy in some of my beliefs. Life is better when I live near large quantities of quartz (Central City, Bailey, Arkansas, Colo Sprg). At least it's more interesting.

I need to add a side note. I have always had a deep interest in Native Americans, their stories/legends, and beliefs. In fact both my husbands were/are Native American. I grew up in an area where the Ute tribes were prevalent. And now I find myself back in their 'old stomping grounds'. The Utes had a special affinity with Pikes Peak. They believe it is where they emerged onto the Earth (I believe they are only the second tribe to have an emergence myth of creation). The Utes believe they came to Earth from the Pleiades constellation. In fact, it is said that they used to arrange their tipis in the same pattern as the constellation.

I may have left parts out of this narrative, unintentionally. So much has happened in my lifetime. I will gladly answer any questions.

Addendum: "I forgot to mention something that happened while we were living in Bailey. Approx. 4 years after living there, both my husband and my youngest son began to develop hair loss on their heads. It was more severe with my husband. Both were seen by various doctors and the only thing determined was that my husband suffered from alopecia. But this wasn't a firm diagnosis. Several months had elapsed by this time & my son's hair had begun to grow back (the main area of loss for him was the top of his head. About two years later, my husband's hair began to grow back. But there were areas where it didn't grow and the hair that was there was white. To this day he still has patches of baldness so he shaves his head. My son had a 'monk's haircut' by the time he was 24 years old. My husband and my youngest son were the only ones affected by this malady - my oldest son and my brother-in-law (who lived with us at the time) were not affected." J

HARPY or POSSIBLE 'DARK ANGEL' Observed on Church Roof in Alberta, Canada

An Alberta resident was looking out the window at the nearby church when an enigmatic winged humanoid descended onto the church roof. What was it they saw?

The following account was sent to me:

"This was a sighting of mine, and I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar sighting or if it was like what I saw.

This was quite a few years ago now, probably around five years ago. It happened in Alberta around winter, I believe. It happened very early in the day, while most people were asleep and the sun had only been up for a short while.

I was staying the night at my sister's and was having a hard time sleeping. So I was staring out the kitchen window and at the church across the street. I liked looking at the church because I thought it was built beautifully. I liked to stare at it and sort of meditate. Well, that is when I saw something very odd, and frightening.

I saw a half-naked, human-like figure, fly down and kneel on the roof. It had very long black hair, large, demented, bent black wings, greyish skin, and black from the waist down. I couldn't make out the face. I watched its hair and wings blowing in the wind.

I had no idea what I was seeing, or if it was dangerous, or even evil. I also didn't know if it knew I was watching it from the window. I slowly kneeled down behind the counter, still watching it, terrified. I wondered if it was a fallen angel, or a harpy, which I knew caused people to disappear.

I hid for a while, it just seemed to stay there, and I slowly stood back up. Which was maybe a bad move if it could see me.

Well, I now stood at the window watching it, wondering if it was looking at me. I watched for a few minutes, and out of nowhere, it jumped into the air. I didn't even see it use its wings, more like it jumped like it had inhuman strength and speed. like a leap. I was very startled by this experience, and not overly sure what to make of it.

Has anyone seen anything similar, or noticed it behave similarly?" E

Screaming 'COMMUNION' ALIEN Panics Maryland Boy!

A Maryland boy encounters a Grey alien humanoid while outside playing. The being is 'screaming' into the mind of the boy, sending him into a panic. He later said it looked like the alien on the 'Communion' book cover.

I received the following account:

"Hi. I grew up by the woods around Ellerslie, Maryland and at the age of around 10 years old, I had a terrifying experience. It was October 31, 1977. Many times I would accompany my mother to take our dogs for a walk in the woods. Around this age, I was fascinated with different TV programs and what I would describe as doing a witch laugh or cackling. I would do this "witch laugh" when we would walk in the woods because I was trying to master it to sound scary.

A few days later I was playing in my backyard with my brother when I began hearing a very hard knocking sound coming from the side of our house. I looked at the house and saw nothing and my brother continued playing. The sound hit the house again and I looked again and saw nothing. This horrendous loud sound (that I suppose only I could hear) hit the house again. For the third time, I heard the loud sound again. Except this time I had this feeling to turn my head to the left facing our garage by the woods.

There is where I saw a Grey-like humanoid creature standing partly behind a tree right in front of our garage. It had would I described at that time as "an upside-down onion head" with large slanted eyes, a small mouth, and a nose. It then telepathically communicated my "witch laugh" into my head but in a demonic sound.

My brother noticed something was wrong with me and asked me what was wrong, but I couldn't speak. I could hardly get my legs to move and if my brother wasn't there I don't think I could have moved at all due to fear. The fear it put into me was like nothing I have ever experienced in my life. I began laughing demonically in my head and doing the witch laugh. The sound filled my head and it was deafening. Finally, I could scream and began to partly run, almost falling as I headed for the front door of our house.

As I got to the door my mother came running asking what was wrong? I was hysterical crying and screaming realizing that this thing was pure evil. My parents asked my brother what happened, but he didn't know. I described to my parents what I saw and what it did to me. My parents decided to go out and investigate the tree and garage area, even though I begged them not to. They found nothing nor saw nothing and I never saw it again.

Many years later I came across a book that had the exact picture on it of the Grey alien I had seen called 'Communion.' There on the front cover was the same face of the Grey alien creature I had seen. After looking at the content of the book, I knew then that others had seen the same alien creature I had and that this was real." F

INDIANA'S MONSTER SNAKES! Historical & Contemporary Accounts

The state of Indiana has its fair share of monster sightings and stories. Alien big cats, lake and swamp monsters, phantom kangaroos, "devil monkeys," bigfoot, lizard men, giant birds, and a possible dragon. The one phenomenon that intrigues me is the number of sightings and encounters (natural & supernatural) with giant snakes or snake-like creatures. There have been a few aquatic reports, but I'm concentrating on those incidents of land-dwelling snakes. Other places in the USA have large snake reports. But Indiana, for whatever reason, has a more varied mix of slithering serpents. Is it, for the most part, just bluster? Possibly, but most legends usually start based on fact. Tell me what you think:

GHOUL SNAKE INHABITS CEMETERY

The most horrible snake story of the season comes from Benton County, and is told by the Lafayette Courier as follows: “There is a larger snake, measuring fifteen feet in length, as large in circumference as a good-sized stovepipe, with eyes of fire, adorned with horns underneath fully ten inches long, in the cemetery west of Oxford Benton county, Ind. It has been seen by at least a dozen people, and the supposition is that it subsists by feasting upon the dead bodies interred therein. Rumors of such a reptile inhabiting the city of the dead have been afloat for two years but until recently they have not been believed.

A gentleman of Oxford, whose word was never known to be doubted saw the snake the other day, and although he found and picked up a club, he became frightened at its mammoth size, and instead of entering into a battle with it he took to his heels and without looking back to see if it was after him, ran breathless to his home. At first, he gave some excuse for this hurried and excited arrival but at last related his experience. There is a certain amount of distress among the citizens of Oxford, who have relatives buried in the cemetery, over the general belief that the reptile is living upon the dead bodies. The gentleman who informed the Courier reporter this morning of the matter says that on investigation there have been found large holes leading down into the graves. It is with a feeling of horror, accompanied by a shudder, that the people of Oxford have learned of this unnatural being. Those who have seen it, describe it as being of frightening appearance with its fiery eyes, horns, and mammoth size. None have seen it but that at the first glimpse, their hair seemed to rise on their very heads, and their hearts to almost stop beating at the sight of the terrible creature. - Logansport Journal, Logansport, Indiana - 3 September 1889

MONSTER SERPENT DITCHES VEHICLES ALONG THE ROAD

GREENSBURG, Indiana, October 8. – Prominent citizens in the southern part of Decatur County declare that stories regarding the depredations by a monster snake are not fables. They declare the reptile, reported to be from twenty-five to thirty-five feet long and proportionately large as to girth, has been seen several times in the community during the last few days.

Work has been virtually abandoned in some sections and men, armed with guns, are searching for the monster. A calf belonging to Robert Bishop is said to have been devoured by the snake and the entire community professes intense alarm.

Some residents advance the theory that the reptile escaped from some passing show. Others point to stories, emanating from Sullivan and Green counties, many miles distant, of a serpent of similar proportions which is declared to have ditched “flivvers” [Ford Model T automobiles] in encounters on the highways. The Sullivan-Green County reptile was described at widely separated points within a space of a few hours and it received much publicity – some of it more than half serious – in the newspapers.

Now the Decaturites are wondering if this monster donned figurative seven-league boots and emigrated to this country. - Brownwood Bulletin - Brownwood, Texas - October 8, 1920

BIG JIM

The Woods and Streams north of Jasper found a dubious honor in the natural history of Indiana a few weeks ago when two men who were canoeing a flooded stream spotted a large snake swimming uncomfortably close to them.

After whacking it into oblivion with a paddle they took it to a conservation officer who identified the 42-inch-long serpent as a western cottonmouth, so-called because of its white mouth. Indiana suddenly became identified as the home of a fourth species of poisonous snake.

The western cottonmouth joins the timber rattlesnake and copperhead of southern and central Indiana and the massasauga, found in northern Indiana swamps.

The western cottonmouth, or water moccasin, has long been suspected to inhabit southern Indiana. One was reported in Gibson County in 1887, but its existence wasn’t confirmed. Persons who want to look for cottonmouths might note its dark brown coloring under black markings, a triangular head, and a heavy body. One way of telling it from the non-poisonous copperbelly is to look it in the eye. If the pupil is round the snake is safe. If it is slit-shaped like a cat’s, it is venomous.

Experts say that of the four poisonous Indiana snakes, only the rattlesnake’s bite is usually fatal. There is only one sure test of this rule of thumb.

Fortunately, or unfortunately--depending on your interest in snakes--residents of most of the Wabash Valley will have to go a way to find one of the poisonous species. A recent issue of Outdoor Indiana reported that poisonous vipers seem to give Sullivan, Daviess, Knox, Pike, and most of Gibson counties a wide birth.

A visitor to Vincennes in 1816 attributed the lack of snakes to the Indian custom of burning off the tall grass of the prairie each Fall to make spotting game easier. Also, the flat, rolling plain of Knox County is not the sort of topography rattlers prefer. They like hilly timbered land.

Then maybe the poisonous snakes have heard of the inglorious end of Big Jim.

A century ago stories of a giant rattlesnake were striking fear in the hearts of the area. Big Jim was reported as the terror of the Wabash, a monster rattler 10 feet long (or longer in some estimates). He made his home at Rattlesnake Bluff on the Little Wabash, 12 miles north of Carmi, Ill., although he reportedly ranged up and down the Wabash Valley.

The snake was first noticed in the spring of 1881 when loggers went to log the Skillet Fork bottoms.

According to the story of this confrontation, told with grand detail in 1908 by the Vincennes Commercial, the loggers were driven to shelter in rain on the bluff overhanging the river. A black man in the crew was sent for firewood, but he came back, terrified and empty-handed. The logger, who was named Big Jim, reported seeing a great demon prowling the bluff. Capt. Ed Ballard, in charge of the crew, angrily ordered the man back to his task.

Minutes later a scream was heard from the top of the bluff and Jim hurtled down the bluff and into the flooded river. He was never seen again, though an extensive search was made of the river the next day. More men ascended the bluff but heard what they said sounded like a thousand rattles. Rain or not, the survivors boated to the Illinois bank of the Wabash in record time.

The Commercial, looking back, said the logging business in the area was set back by stories of the giant snake. Also, other excursions of this monster rattler, now called Big Jim in honor of his victim, were reported in succeeding years. Near the bluff, one farmer looked into his chicken yard and saw his best Plymouth Rock rooster staring eyeball to eyeball with a giant snake. He emptied a shotgun at the snake, and it disappeared. He said his rooster was never the same again.

Cattle and hogs were reported bitten in the area.

Then a group of turkey and squirrel hunters, including Knox County Sheriff Lee Staley, saw what they said was Big Jim on a log sunning himself. They blasted away at him, interrupting his nap but apparently not hurting him.

A country school four miles from Rattlesnake Bluff was the next site of a report. Big Jim was spotted nearby, and the frightened teacher gathered the students inside the school, shut the blinds, and hid out until evening when parents came to see what the problem was. The school was dismissed for the rest of the year.

One farmer reported the snake’s love for his blackberry patch. The farmer, William Ude, said his bull tried to horn the critter and came out the loser to the snake’s fangs.

A large cage put over the hole to what was supposedly Big Jim’s lair was found bent and twisted. A price was put on the snake’s head, and fearful farmers began wearing high boots to ward off attacking snakes. A snake, Big Jim, of course, frightened a team of stagecoach horses near Centerville, Ill., sending one frightened traveler up a tree.

Dynamiters blew holes over Rattlesnake Bluff, maybe sending thousands of snakes to their deaths, but reportedly not Big Jim. In 1908, after more than a quarter of a century, there still was a rattlesnake mania north of Carmi, and all reports of snakes were attributed to the legendary serpent.

Big Jim finally was put to rest, shortly after the latest account of his history had been told in the Commercial.

On the W.H. Thompson farm in southwestern Sullivan County, farm hand John Bascomb heard a commotion in the pigpen. A boar had a giant rattlesnake in his jaws, close enough to the head that the snake couldn’t get in a knock-out punch. By the time he had returned with a rifle the other hogs in the pen were in the fray, stomping and biting at the writhing snake. Bascomb finally got a clear shot, and the snake was finished.

Bascomb mounted the skin, which measured 12 feet five inches and had 29 rattles. Whether Big Jim or just a big rattler, the legend of the terror of the Wabash died in a Sullivan County pigpen. - The Valley Advance, Vincennes, Ind., May 31, 1983

BIZARRE 'FIERY' SNAKE

Mark Weston, a farmer living near the town of Alexander, Ind., relates a most wonderful phenomenon that occurred at his place. He says:

“Just after dark the night before last, I had to go out to the barn to look after the horses. A public highway passes within yards of my house, and the barn is built about 20 rods from the house due south and somewhat nearer the road. I started from the house in the direction of the barn and had gone perhaps half the distance when I noticed something playing along the ground that looked like a tremendous fiery snake.

The object crossed my path, and as it did so I felt the air grow much colder and a peculiar, moaning sound arose, like the sighing of the wind through the trees, only it was loud enough to drown a man's voice when he would shout. Then I felt something come over me like electricity, and I became motionless as though I had grown fast to the ground.

I was terribly scared, but I never lost the use of my hands or legs through fear, though there was something peculiar in the air that simply paralyzed me. When the thing had got perhaps 50 feet from me going west, it turned and came back, and as it did so the moaning sound changed to a shrill whistle, something like a locomotive would make, and when it got just in front of me it took a course directly away from me and toward the barn.

It traveled very rapidly and looked like a large ragged streak of fire, perhaps 30 feet long and 18 inches in diameter. The thing reached the barn and in almost an instant ran directly up in front of the building and onto the roof. I expected every moment to see the barn burst into flames, but it did not. The great fiery snake ran with great rapidity all over the building, in almost every direction, up and down, crosswise and every way. I suppose, a thousand times. It then came to the front of the building and elevated itself, and it stood straight on its tail fully 30 feet in the air.

I was perfectly conscious all the time, but try as I would I could not move from the spot. After the thing had remained in an upright position for, I presume, three or four minutes there was a sudden explosion like the discharge of a cannon, and the thing disappeared entirely. With the disappearance of the strange phenomenon, I felt a shock like the first one I had felt, and at the same time, I gained control of my limbs. GRUESOME ORIGINS of Favorite Fairy Tales

Fairy tales of the past were often full of macabre and gruesome twists and endings. Disney and other film production companies have sanitized these stories for a modern audience that is deemed unable to cope with something other than a happy ending. This list looks at some of the common endings we are familiar with and explains the original gruesome origins.

The Pied Piper - Robert Browning

In the tale of the Pied Piper, we have a village overrun with rats. A man arrives dressed in clothes of pied (a patchwork of colors) and offers to rid the town of the vermin. The villagers agree to pay a vast sum of money if the piper can do it - and he does. He plays music on his pipe which draws all the rats out of the town. When he returns for payment - the villagers won’t cough up so the Pied Piper decides to rid the town of children too! In most modern variants, the piper draws the children to a cave out of the town and when the townsfolk finally agree to pay up, he sends them back. In the darker original, the piper leads the children to a river where they all drown (except a lame boy who couldn’t keep up). Little Red Riding Hood - Brothers Grimm

The version of this tale that most of us are familiar with ends with Riding Hood being saved by the woodsman who kills the wicked wolf. But in fact, the original French version (by Charles Perrault) of the tale was not quite so nice. In this version, the little girl is a well-bred young lady who is given false instructions by the wolf when she asks the way to her grandmothers. Foolishly riding hood takes the advice of the wolf and ends up being eaten. And here the story ends. There is no woodsman - no grandmother - just a fat wolf and a dead Red Riding Hood. The Little Mermaid - Hans Christian Andersen

The 1989 version of The Little Mermaid might be better known as “The Big Whopper!” In the Disney version, the film ends with Ariel the mermaid being changed into a human so she can marry Eric. They marry in a wonderful wedding attended by humans and merpeople. But, in the very first version by Hans Christian Andersen, the mermaid sees the Prince marry a princess and she despairs. She is offered a knife with which to stab the prince to death, but rather than do that she jumps into the sea and dies by turning to froth. Hans Christian Andersen modified the ending slightly to make it more pleasant. In his new ending, instead of dying when turned to froth, she becomes a “daughter of the air” waiting to go to heaven - so, frankly, she is still dead for all intents and purposes. Snow White - Brothers Grimm

In the tale of snow white that we are all familiar with, the Queen asks a huntsman to kill her and bring her heart back as proof. Instead, the huntsman can’t bring himself to do it and returns with the heart of a boar. Now, fortunately, Disney hasn’t done too much damage to this tale, but they did leave out one important original element: in the original tale, the Queen actually asks for Snow White’s liver and lungs - which are to be served for dinner that night! Also in the original, Snow White wakes up when she is jostled by the prince’s horse as he carries her back to his castle - not from a magical kiss. What the prince wanted to do with a dead girl’s body I will leave to your imagination. Oh - in the Grimm version, the tale ends with the Queen being forced to dance to death in red hot iron shoes! Sleeping Beauty - Brothers Grimm

In the original Sleeping Beauty, the lovely princess is put to sleep when she pricks her finger on a spindle. She sleeps for one hundred years when a prince finally arrives, kisses her, and awakens her. They fall in love, marry, and (surprise surprise) live happily ever after. But alas, the original tale is not so sweet (in fact, you have to read this to believe it.) In the original, the young woman is put to sleep because of a prophesy, rather than a curse. And it isn’t the kiss of a prince which wakes her up: the king seeing her asleep, and rather fancying having a bit, rapes her. After nine months she gives birth to two children (while she is still asleep). One of the children sucks her finger which removes the piece of flax which was keeping her asleep. She wakes up to find herself raped and the mother of two kids. Sleeping Beauty[image error]

Rumpelstiltskin - Brothers Grimm

This fairy tale is a little different from the others because rather than sanitizing the original, it was modified by the original author to make it more gruesome. In the original tale, Rumpelstiltskin spins straw into gold for a young girl who faces death unless she can perform the feat. In return, he asks for her firstborn child. She agrees - but when the day comes to hand over the kid, she can’t do it. Rumpelstiltskin tells her that he will let her off the bargain if she can guess his name. She overhears him singing his name by a fire and so she guesses it correctly. Rumpelstiltskin, furious, runs away, never to be seen again. But in the updated version, things are a little messier. Rumpelstiltskin is so angry that he drives his right foot deep into the ground. He then grabs his left leg and rips himself in half. Needless to say this kills him. - Rumpelstiltskin[image error]

Goldilocks and the Three Bears - Robert Southey

In this heartwarming tale, we hear of pretty little Goldilocks who finds the house of the three bears. She sneaks inside and eats their food, sits in their chairs, and finally falls asleep on the bed of the littlest bear. When the bears return home they find her asleep - she awakens and escapes out the window in terror. The original tale (which actually only dates to 1837) has two possible variations. In the first, the bears find Goldilocks, rip her apart, and eat her. In the second, Goldilocks is actually an old hag who (like the sanitized version) jumps out of a window when the bears wake her up. The story ends by telling us that she either broke her neck in the fall or was arrested for vagrancy and sent to the “House of Correction”. Goldilocks and the Three Bears[image error]

Hansel and Gretel - Brothers Grimm

In the widely known version of Hansel and Gretel, we hear of two little children who become lost in the forest, eventually finding their way to a gingerbread house that belongs to a wicked witch. The children end up enslaved for a time as the witch prepares them for eating. They figure their way out, throw the witch in a fire, and escape. In an earlier French version of this tale (called The Lost Children), instead of a witch, we have a devil. Now the wicked old devil is tricked by the children (in much the same way as Hansel and Gretel) but he works it out and puts together a sawhorse to put one of the children on to bleed (that isn’t an error - he really does). The children pretend not to know how to get on the sawhorse so the devil’s wife demonstrates. While she is lying down the kids slash her throat and escape. Hansel and Gretel[image error]

The Girl Without Hands - Brothers Grimm

Frankly, the revised version of this fairy tale is not a great deal better than the original, but there are sufficient differences to include it here. In the new version, a poor man is offered wealth by the devil if he gives him whatever is standing behind his mill. The poor man thinks it is an apple tree and agrees - but it is actually his daughter. The devil tries to take the daughter but can’t - because she is pure, so he threatens to take the father unless the daughter allows her father to chop off her hands. She agrees and the father does the deed. Now - that is not particularly nice, but it is slightly worse in some of the earlier variants in which the young girl chops off her own arms to make herself ugly to her brother who is trying to rape her. Cinderella - Charles Perrault / Brothers Grimm

In the modern Cinderella fairy tale, we have the beautiful Cinderella swept off her feet by the prince and her wicked step sisters marrying two lords - with everyone living happily ever after. The fairy tale has its origins way back in the 1st century BC when Strabo’s heroine was actually called Rhodopis, not Cinderella. The story was very similar to the modern one except for the glass slippers and pumpkin coach. But, lurking behind the pretty tale is a more sinister variation by the Grimm brothers: in this version, the nasty step-sisters cut off parts of their own feet to fit them into the glass slipper - hoping to fool the prince. The prince is alerted to the trickery by two pigeons who peck out the step-sister’s eyes. They end up spending the rest of their lives as blind beggars while Cinderella gets to lounge about in luxury at the prince’s castle. The Complete Fairy Tales (Oxford World's Classics)[image error]

NOTE: A brief bit about the Brothers Grimm - Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, and authors who together collected and published folklore. If you've ever read "Grimm's Fairy Tales" and felt they were a little dark for kids, you have German culture during the early 1800s to thank. After the book was published it attracted criticism for its sexual content, so the brothers edited these themes out of subsequent editions. But because the violence of the stories wasn't frowned upon in the same way, it was retained and in some cases even increased.

The brothers' academic careers were upset in 1837, though, by some political upheaval. When King Ernest Augustus I demanded oaths of allegiance from university professors and other civil servants, Jacob and Wilhelm refused. They were fired from their posts, along with five other professors, and three of the group, including Jacob, were deported. He moved back to Germany and was joined by Wilhelm, but found themselves impoverished, and had to rely on the financial support of friends.

In 1840 their fortunes changed when both Jacob and Wilhelm received job offers from the University of Berlin. There, they continued their research; and further polished their folk tale collection, now in its third edition. The two brothers continued working together for the rest of their lives. When Wilhelm died in 1859, the Grimms' collection of folk tales had reached its 7th edition and had grown to 200 tales.

In the film, The Brothers Grimm[image error] the pair were depicted as con artists pretending to remove evil spirits and malevolent entities as they traveled from town to town in 19th Century Germany. There is no basis for these characterizations and should be considered as fiction.

The Grimm's collection of folklore had already been popular during their lifetimes, but it went on to become one of the most celebrated works of German literature and the basis for countless books and movies during the next two centuries. (VIDEO) ORB Transforms Into Two Children? HOAX? GHOSTS?

A sphere of light is captured on video that morphs into two children, but then it turns out to be more disturbing than expected.

According to the media source:

"A recent video has captured the attention of millions of users on social media due to its inexplicable content.

Recorded by a security camera, the clip shows an orb of light that inexplicably transforms into two children in the middle of a forest in Mexico, before mysteriously disappearing.

This phenomenon sparked a great debate on the Internet, where some users have tried to rationalize and explain what happened, while others embrace the supernatural idea that surrounds the case.

The recording, which was shared by the @EarthquakeChil1 account on social media X, shows what appears to be a luminous object floating in the air at 4:26 a.m. on Thursday, August 22.

The orb slowly moves through the wooded area until it stops and, surprisingly, turns into two children.

The security camera, upon detecting this strange transformation, zooms in to focus on the minors.

The most disturbing thing was that the two human silhouettes seemed to pass through each other, giving a ghostly effect as if they were covering the same space.

The video goes on to show one of the children moving slightly before fading away completely. Seconds later, the second child also takes a few steps and disappears without a trace.

The exact location of the recording has not yet been revealed. The account that posted the video only mentions that it took place in Mexico.

Some believe the children are ghosts, others have been incredulous and doubt the authenticity of the video, and some have expressed that the clip scared them.

The mystery surrounding the video has given rise to several theories. While some users say it could be an editing trick or a paranormal phenomenon, others consider the possibility of a scientific explanation that has not yet been explored.
