Hawaiian 'NIGHT MARCHERS' & Tourists' SUPERNATURAL EXPERIENCE

I first learned about this phenomenon while researching a haunting in a Kona, Hawaii firehouse. One of the clients informed me of the legend, mentioning that many of his relatives claimed to have witnessed the procession on the nearby beaches.

He believed the firehouse was haunted by a restless phantom warrior from the 18th century. The structure was fairly old and needed a lot of renovation. In fact, some parts of the structure were in total disrepair from what I gathered from witnesses. Despite the effort, the strange activity never really ended until the firehouse was eventually razed for a new building. So far, I am not aware of any reported activity.

Anyway...or the last century or so published and unpublished accounts have surfaced of people encountering the marching apparitions of chiefs, chiefesses, dead relatives, gods, and goddesses, along with their entourages on roads they had once ceremonially traveled to attend to ritual ceremonies. Hawaiians call the phantom parade huaka‘i po.

The legend evolved from a cultural matrix that encompassed information passed on orally or from writings about non-phantom Hawaiian daytime and nighttime processions of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries following Captain Cook’s arrival in 1778. Foreigners continued writing about the traditional and transitional culture into the 19th century. In the marches were living human beings, some of whom were led by a man or woman of such high rank as to be considered divine, and by men carrying images of gods of both sexes. Hawaiians believed that marchers might include gods, goddesses, family guardian gods, and spirits of dead kinfolk who assumed either material or spectral forms visible to human onlookers.

Here is a story told in 1970 by a Hawaiian fisherman of Pepe‘ekeo, Hawaii, about the time he and his companion heard the phantom night marchers and saw their torches. The limpet picker related his story as follows:

"One night when I was fishing for ulua Mahu-kona side, I was sitting listening to the waves crash on the rocks. I was with Keoki. We started talking story after sliding fresh puhi [eels] down the line. It was about ten o’clock. Suddenly I heard the sound of a conch shell blowing in the distance. Keoki heard it too. I thought it was the wind. Then a little while later we heard it again. This time it was a little louder. It was spooky because we didn’t see anything, Then we heard it again. We looked toward Ka-wai-hae side and then we saw it. It looked like a procession.At first we saw a line of torches in the distance. The procession was moving along the coastline. The conch shell blew again.

I took out my knife and Keoki got the rifle. We went seaward and laid down on the lava rock. We knew about night marchers from other fishermen. We knew you aren’t supposed to look upon the marchers and to lay on the ground face down. We did this. The marchers passed about fifty yards in front of us on the sand path. As they passed we could hear the sound of a drum pounding beat by beat. We didn’t look up until they were farther down the coast. All we could see now was the line of torches, and all we could hear was the far away sound of the conch shell.

We didn’t know if they were going to come back that night, but we didn’t want to stick around and see. We got our sleeping bags and made it to the car and went to Spencer Park to spend the rest of the night. In the morning we went back and picked up our rigs and equipment we left behind."

More recent observers note that phantom processions frequently appear on anniversaries and at places of important national or local events that took place in the marchers’ lifetime. In 1970, a great-grandmother in Hawaii explained that the spirits of dead chiefs and their followers still traveled from village to village to attend festivities such as they had enjoyed in life. She also noted that a very high chief had heralds to order people to prostrate themselves off the trail; anyone failing to do so risked being instantly killed by the chief’s guards.

In the old culture, a chief and his followers marched to battle arrayed in feather cloaks, helmets, and other finery. In the chief’s personal party were his wife, closest friends, and bearers of stick images representing his gods. Also in his procession were his general, priests, astrologers, as well as variously trained, equipped, and specialized ranks of warriors. Observers of phantom marchers frequently identify them as the spirits of a chief and his warriors.

The phantom night marchers have been seen frequently along the entire Kona coast including Kealakekua Bay and along The Pathway of the Gods, Kamehameha’s birthplace, and other sacred and historical sites. In 1970 the great-grandson of the woman who described the march of chiefs to festivities conjectured that the night-marching spirits might on occasion be connected with the Makahiki. In 1931 a Maui woman interpreted a phantom midnight festival as a reenactment of a Makahiki fertility rite.

Among adult observers are farmers, fishermen, ranch hands, U.S. soldiers, youth camp counselors, schoolteachers, a former interpreter in King Kalakaua’s court, a plantation owner, a physician, a tourist, a prominent politician, and the sister of another politician.

Most observers, in relating their experiences, state that they were not alone at the time, and their companions, in all but one instance, saw and heard what they did. Occasionally a whole family, a community, or a group of people see the marchers.

Opinions differ as to whether children can see or hear night marchers. A young Oahu girl whose mother aroused her during a procession was able to hear but not see it. Another heard the drums although her young companions could not, and as an adult this same girl heard, saw, conversed with, and marched alongside of the spirit of an ancestor. In Hawaii, a family sat up with their children to wait in a safe place for the procession. As an adult, the daughter recalled that she had heard the marchers distinctly but had seen them only rather dimly. One evening two young boys at South Kona heard the marchers’ drums and saw their torches before their mother did, And a young Kohala girl, playing during the day in a forbidden field, was terrified when she heard a whistling wind, drums, heavy footsteps, and voices, and was knocked off the marchers’ path by a protective spirit who whispered a name in her ear which she later learned was that of a dead relative. A Moloka‘i family was happily excited when a son heard the spirits’ drums. On the other hand, a Maui woman as a child could not hear, and presumably could not see the marchers, but as an adult, she heard them so clearly that had she been able to record musical notation she could have put down the sounds of their chants, flutes, and drums. In the 1960s, an O‘ahu man stated flatly that only adults could hear and see the spirits, for as a child he had been unable to hear them although his parents and grandparents could.

There are hundreds of traditional and more modern accounts of the phantom marchers. Regardless of an intended or unintended motive, stories of experiences with night marchers or beliefs about them are told for many reasons: to entertain; to discuss a puzzling, inexplicable, perhaps frightening phenomenon; to pass the time and relieve boredom; to dispense knowledge about the phenomenon and proper behavior regarding it; to frighten children into obedience and fear of night-wandering spirits; to endow sacred and historic sites with supernatural protection and value and protect them from further damage; to communicate oral history; or a combination of several of these things. But most importantly such stories function to express the storyteller’s sense of cultural and personal continuity with old Hawaiian culture.

NOTE: Over the years I have received several very odd anecdotes from Hawaii, most are related to legends and beliefs. For example, I received a witness report that stated phantom wild pigs were seen throughout a macadamia nut grove. It was so bad that the owner couldn't keep workers, they considered it as a bad sign. I referred the case it to a local investigator who later confirmed that she had witnessed the phantom pigs herself. It's a long detailed story that I may cover one day, but a good example of some of the weird activity that comes from Hawaii. Lon

I'm going to throw this reader's Hawaiian experience into the mix as well:

"I have debated some time on whether to submit this experience and I finally decided what the heck. In August of 2012 my wife and I took a long awaited trip to the big island, Hawaii. The trip there was un-eventful. Left from Oklahoma City, stop in DFW, then LAX, and finally we arrived at Kona International Airport. We picked up our luggage, grabbed a rental and headed to the resort. Upon arrival we found the resort to be absolutely lovely, it was just as we pictured it. Check in went smoothly and we were walked up a small path to our condo. Two beds, two baths, a living room, a huge lanai, full kitchen and a two-person garden tub.

After unpacking I noted it was around 2pm. We were exhausted (as our flight left OKC the previous night). We decided to take a nap before starting our adventuring. My wife laid down in bed and I adjusted the AC. I walked into the bedroom from the hallway thermostat. Just as I stepped into the room I heard a noise from the living area, it sounded like somebody dropped a stack of magazines. I grudgingly walked into the living area to pick up a mess. I couldn't find anything askew. There were a stack of magazines on the small coffee table, but they were on the table not the floor. I looked for a minute then just shrugged it off. I laid down in bed.

I was almost asleep when I heard the bedroom door close. I figured my wife needed a drink, I turned over to see her lying in bed next to me. I immediately went into attack mode. It was 2:15pm I jumped stealth-fully out of bed and grabbed my pocket knife from the dresser. I was trained to use a knife a time ago, so I was confident I could stop an attacker unless they had a gun. I approached the door. It opened silently. I peered out ready to strike. Nothing. I systematically searched the condo. Nothing. I am a reasonable fellow, my is wife very reasonable herself. We decided the pressure from the AC switching on had closed the door.

I laid down again. Before my eyes the door began to close. It silently and gently shut until the mechanism was in contact with the door jam. I laughed to myself, thinking of how I over-reacted. The door violently slammed itself shut. I shot out of bed and promptly opened the door. I stood and watched it for 5 minutes, it didn't budge. I walked back to bed and sat down. The door rapidly closed slamming itself shut! I remember getting chills, my wife leaned in behind me and peered at the door. I stood and blurted out loud "IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST BE GONE FROM HERE! YOU ARE NOT WELCOME GET OUT!" I immediately felt the room begin to warm. Things were normal once again. It was 2:23pm. My wife and I prayed for protection and finally slept peacefully.

We are both people of great faith, we knew whatever it was had been forced out. I believe that our faith was keeping it at bay. We were there 14 days. Nothing further occurred until the last day of the trip. It was around 10pm I was packing and watching a series called "Haunted Highway." My wife was already asleep. I finished up packing and laid down. The television was kept concealed inside a large built-in wardrobe. The door in front of the television would open and lay flat against the wall. There was even a small latch that kept it in place. It had not moved the entire time we had been there. I watched it slowly close and shut and latch. I calmly got up and opened the door so I could finish my program. I stood back and the door began to rapidly close! I jumped forward caught the door and said "GET OUT." I pushed the door open latched it in place and laid down. I prayed again and went to sleep.

I had very violent and frightening dreams all night. I woke exhausted and found the wardrobe was still open as I left it. We loaded our car and left that place behind. I was glad to be on the plane homeward bound. I still break out in wild goose bumps and my hair stands on end each time I tell and relive this experience. My wife and I believe in the supernatural, but this was a first for us. I absolutely believe that which was in our condo was demonic in nature. It's whole purpose was to rock our faith, all it succeeded in doing was making it stronger. On a side note I have been to Oahu many times BECAUSE my sister used to live there. I never experienced anything like this there. When I relived the experience for my sister she just sat there silently. She looked at her husband and they both said that they had similar experiences when they first moved to Oahu. They hadn't told anybody because they were afraid of ridicule. Native Hawaiians have long believed in spirits that would attack 'howlies' that were visiting the islands." D

NOTE: 'Howlies' is a corruption of the word Haole, Hawaiian slang for foreigner. Usually applied only to Caucasian people. Not necessarily derogatory, depends on context. I have heard similar stories from people who have traveled to Hawaii. In fact, an NFL player who was in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl several years ago related to me encounters that he and another player had with less-than-friendly spirits in their hotel suites. To make a long story short, they didn't get much sleep during their stay and vowed to never return to Hawaii. Maybe the vengeful native entities are getting a little 'payback' for past atrocities. Wollaton Park, Nottingham 'DRIVING' GNOMES

This odd incident occurred on October 29, 1979, in a swampy area of Wollaton Park, Nottingham. There's not much information to go on. All the evidence is anecdotal, but it is an interesting mass sighting of gnome/fairy creatures:

“The witnesses were a small group of children aged eight to ten, and the events took place in September 1979 in Wollaton Park, Nottingham. They were in the park grounds at 8.30 p.m., when it was getting dark but there was still some light to see by. In a swampy area with trees, fenced off to stop the public from entering, the children saw about sixty little men, about half as tall as themselves. They had long white beards with red tips and wrinkled faces. They wore caps on their heads, described as being like old-fashioned nightcaps, Noddy-style, with a bobble on the end.they also wore blue tops and yellow tights. For most of the fifteen minutes that the children spent with them, the little men were in little cars. There were thirty cars with two men in each. The cars didn’t have steering wheels, but a round thing with a handle to turn. There was no sound of engines, but they traveled fast, and could jump over obstructions like logs.”

“They were also seen up in trees, coming out of and returning to holes. The children felt they could only come out after dark. Despite the disbelief of their parents when told about the little men, the children were adamant that they were not making up stories. They also claimed to have seen the little people before, during the long summer holiday. Their headmaster interviewed and recorded them separately soon after, and despite a few discrepancies in their accounts, and differences of emphasis, the children do sound truthful.” - Fairies: Real Encounters With Little People[image error]

Furthermore, the author Janet Bord adds this seemingly innocuous footnote, based on its similarities to the sighting:

Over six years before the Wollaton fairies were reported in the media, I had corresponded with Marina Fry of Cornwall, who wrote to me giving details of her own fairy sighting when she was nearly four years old, around 1940. One night she and her older sisters, all sleeping in one bedroom, awoke to hear a buzzing noise (one sister said ‘music and bells’). Looking out of the window they saw a little man in a tiny red car driving around in circles’. He was about 18 inches tall and had a white beard and a ‘droopy pointed hat'...he just disappeared after a while.

In Fortean Times #31, there is another reference to the sighting:

Several children returning home after playing, heard a sound like a bell and saw coming out of the wooded area about 60 little gnome like men with wrinkled faces and long white beards, they were about 2-foot tall and were riding small bubble-like vehicles. The beings rode over the swamps near the lake and some chased the children towards the gate of the park. Some of the humanoids wore red hats and green pants and seemed to be laughing in a peculiar way. The children ran from the area. - darklore.dailygrail.com

There was a later reference in the Fortean Times #34:

"Wollaton Park in Nottingham, Notts, is the setting for one of the most bizarre modern-day encounters with the Little People ever recorded.

A small group of 8-10-year-old children were walking home from the park at around 8.30pm one evening in late September 1979 when, they claim, a vertiable cavalcade of gnomes, approximately 60 in total drove out of the bushes around the park's lake in 30 tiny red and white bubble cars.

According to their amazed eyewitnesses, these extraordinary entities had greenish wrinkled faces with white beards tipped in red, wore brightly coloured tunics and leggings, and were only half as tall of the children. The Gnomes drove around for about 15 minutes - even playfully chasing the children - but were not frightening or aggressive.

Not suprisingly, when they attended school the next day and spoke of what they had seen, the children were interviewed separately and rigourously by their headmaster, but their testimonies were predominately consistent and they insisted that their story was true.

Furthermore, once it became public, other local people came forward to claim that they too had spied these mini-motorists in the park, especially near the lake, and Marjorie Johnson, a former secretary of the Nottingham-based Fairy Investigation Society, confirmed that she had recieved a number of previous reports of Little People frequenting this locality". - Fortean Times #34 (Special 2005 Edition)

Gnomes are said to be the spiritual beings who inhabit the spirit realm of the earth element. As spirits of energy, they are commonly invisible to the average person, only those that possess second sight can see them clearly. However being on the first level of the spirit realm, they are close enough to the physical realm to easily inter-react with it. By tradition, Gnomes were the protectors of secret treasures hidden in caves beneath the earth. Legends have it that they were reluctant to help and aid humans, but if you were to gain the trust of one, they could prove to be powerful friends. On the other hand, if you were to lose their trust, deceive them or misuse their aid, then all hell could be let loose.

In Wicca/Witchcraft Gnomes are called to instill confidence, steadfastness, and endurance, but can also be used to bring about gloom, melancholy, and despair should that be required.

The Earth Spirits or Gnomes absorb from the ethers (a plain of existence beyond the upper and lower worlds of shamanism, and beyond the astral plane, but lower than the level of the Gods) and release the energy into matter to give it life. They are formless, but take the form of whatever they interact with. Thus, when they meet a human, they take a human form, though short, stocky, and thick-set, due to their earthy nature. Interestingly enough, there was a Disney film produced in 1967 titled The Gnome-Mobile.[image error] In the film, an eccentric millionaire and his grandchildren are embroiled in the plights of some forest gnomes who are searching for the rest of their tribe. While helping them, the millionaire is suspected of being crazy because he's seeing gnomes! He's committed, and the niece and nephew and the gnomes have to find him and free him. The film was based on a 1936 Upton Sinclair novel The Gnome Mobile[image error] that tells the tale of a brother and sister who befriend distraught forest gnomes to save a ring of ancient redwoods from a greedy logging company.

NOTE: Is it possible that this mass sighting was influenced by a children's film? It's food for thought. Lon

'THEY WILL RETURN WHEN READY': Unknown Entity Appears After Parents' Abduction!

I received the following correspondence from a reader in Minnesota. Following the abduction of the writer's parents, they are given a prophetic message.

Hi, Lon. I have been reading your blog for a few months especially after I came across the experiences of David Eckhart and his family. To some people these incidents may be mere imagination - but my experiences are just as strange and frightening.

To begin, I am in my mid 70s and these experiences took place over 15 years starting when I began my law practice in 1972. I had lived in Ontario, Canada all my life but eventually moved to the United States and became a citizen. My life to this point had been fairly uneventful and I was raised by wonderful parents. I was naive to the supernatural and considered it a farce. I was very conservative in my ideals including my commitment to my church and other civic organizations.

One afternoon while working in my office my secretary paged me to say that a gentleman was waiting and wanted to talk to me. He didn't have an appointment but said that he needed to see me immediately. I agreed and told her to let him in. The man was very well dressed in a suit and walked directly to the chair in front of my desk and sat down. He strangely looked at me almost like he wasn't sure if he should be there. I stood when he entered the office but he did not reciprocate when I reached to shake his hand. I sat back down and asked how I could help him. He looked away then slowly back towards me, leaned forward, and said "I was told to tell you something."

"OK - by whom?" I asked. He started a story that was simply unbelievable - but I knew he was telling me the truth. Why? I have no idea - but I just knew that his words were meant for me and that I'd better follow through with the instructions. After a few minutes, the man (I never got a name from him) told me he had to leave, turned around, and walked out of the office. I sat there dumbfounded and worried - was he really telling me the truth?

When I got home I tried to relax before I made my next decision. I was frightened by this time and dreaded making that telephone call. I sat in my recliner, picked up the telephone, and dialed. The telephone on the other end rang for two minutes without an answer - there was no answering machine - it just continued to ring. They weren't home and it was too late for them to be out. I called their neighbor to check on them. The car was in the driveway and there was no answer at the door. The neighbor contacted the police who arrived and entered the house. There was uneaten food on the table and the television in the dining room was on. They were gone - my parents were abducted!

The mystery man in my office had told me that he was approached earlier that day by a young woman who had an odd manner of speech and looked out of place because she wore a strange brown hooded poncho. He had been eating in a local diner when this woman simply walked over to his booth and sat down across from him. She looked into his eyes and he started to feel as if he was drugged. She told him where to find me and to give me these instructions. I was to stay home tonight and to call my parents. They will not answer - they are with us. We need to talk to you - you must do as you have been instructed.

I was utterly scared to the roots. What was going to happen to my parents and what was going to happen tonight? I prepared for the evening in the best way I knew - just sit and watch television until something happened. It didn't take long.

About an hour after I had started to watch television the power went out - including the neighborhood and, from what I could gather, much of the city. I looked out the window - it was very dark. I walked over to my recliner and started to sit down when I heard a clicking sound coming from the hallway. I looked in the direction of the hallway and noticed something moving towards me. It had a metallic look to it but also seemed to be cloaked and almost invisible. As I stared at this form it began to speak to me in English but very deliberate. "Please be calm and listen. You are safe - your parents are safe. It had to be done - there is no explanation that you could understand." I asked when my parents returned. The answer was "They will return when ready" - then the form backed up and disappeared. Ready for what?

That was in March 1972. I received 6 more visits by similar but different beings and with the same message - the last visit was in 1987 just before Christmas.

My parents have never returned. There was an attempt by the authorities to search for them but there was no evidence available and the case quickly went cold. I did eventually get married and helped raise a son. My wife and I are very happy. She knows about my ordeal and, like I, wonders if they will return one day.

Over the years, I have been in contact with others who have had the same or very similar experiences. Many of these people have not told their stories. I felt it was time to tell mine. I forward this summary at your discretion. I enjoy your daily newsletters immensely. Best to you." M

'It'll Happen To You Again': Did an ANGEL Foretell Conception & Birth?

A woman is desperate to give birth but experiences several miscarriages. She encounters an old man at a gas station who prophetically tells her not to worry, that it will happen.

The following account was forwarded to me:

"So, my 23yo (at the time) mom had a very rough time conceiving her first kid (me). She had just had her third miscarriage a couple of months prior and was pretty depressed over things. That day she had attended my cousin’s 1st birthday party and her brother and his girlfriend (the parents of the 1yo) had both shown up high as kites on opioids, so my mom ended up hosting the whole party and making sure the kid was taken care of and having fun. After the party, my mama was thinking about how my cousin’s mom had done drugs, smoked, and drank alcohol during all of her pregnancies but still ended up having three very healthy babies she really couldn’t care less about. Meanwhile, my parents had done everything by the book and sacrificed whatever they needed to still couldn’t conceive. She ended up leaving in tears after she’d cleaned everything up and got my granny to come pick up my cousin while his parents passed out. She started ugly crying in the car.

Then, her car makes a dinging sound to notify her that she’s about to run out of gas, which is weird because she’d had a full tank before the party. Whatever. She pulls up to the corner gas station which also happens to be owned and run by a family friend. She cleans herself up a little, makes sure it doesn’t look like she was just sobbing, and goes to prepay for the gas.

Outside of the gas station door, a man is standing there. She said he looked like the kindly old grandfather character in a lot of Lifetime movies- silver hair, well dressed, deep laugh lines wrinkles, a little sparkle in his eye like St. Nick. She said that as soon as she exited the vehicle this man started smiling wider and was staring at her, almost like he was waiting for her. Before she was even within 10 feet of her, he yelled out, “Please. Don’t worry.”

She stops. Looks around. There’s no one else he’s talking to, she says something like ‘Oh I’m not.’

And he frowns, and goes, “I’m serious. Don’t worry. Everything happens when it’s meant to. It’ll happen to you again.” And as she’s fighting back tears but also confused as hell as to what to say back- just completely flabbergasted, he pulls out a pocket watch on a chain and checks it saying, “In fact, it’s already happening for you. And you don’t have anything to worry about this time. I hope you enjoy it.” He then tapped the face of the watch and said, “Looks like I gotta run.” And walked by her as she entered the store.

The store owner, Brenda (mom’s friend), was immediately like “Who’s that guy!? He’s been standing out there all morning and he didn’t have a car or anything?” And they both turned to see where he was headed off to but he’d disappeared completely. He was gone.

A few weeks later my mom found out she was pregnant with me, and she was convinced she’d already conceived when the man was telling her it was ‘already happening for her.’

Later, once I was born and only a month or two old, my mom took me to show Brenda at the gas station. And, again there were like 4-5 kindly old people exiting the entrance door. They all oooo-ed and ahhhh-ed over the baby as she went to pass, so she stopped for a bit and let them look at me. Then as they held the door open for her to push the stroller through, one of them said casually, “And, you’ve given her such a lovely, fitting name.” Mom just smiled and kept moving. Once inside, she mentioned to Brenda that one of the people leaving had said that and that it was weird because she’d never mentioned my gender, though there may have been some pink blankets in the stroller basket or something, but still, she knew she’d certainly not told them my name. Brenda was just confused and said that she’d not seen ANY customers or had any sales that morning, so she didn’t know who my mom was talking about.

My mom’s convinced they were angels. I like to remind her that similar stuff happens in the movie Rosemary’s Baby. And, good ol’ Brenda would always joke (to my mom’s dismay) that she started keeping a bat behind the counter after “all those old creepers were sooo interested in the baby” just in case. She would always jokingly say that that kind of “hinky stuff” wasn’t welcome in her store. Nothing else like this ever really happened before or after so it’s become a part of our family mythos at this point.

And, just to let you know, I’m a middle-aged woman now and I have yet to become a prophet or a demon or do anything of real importance in life. It was just a weird little one-off occurrence that happened and I think it gave my mom a lot of comfort during a pretty tough and tiring time in her life." R

(VIDEO) 'NESSIE' PAIR? Double Wake Recorded at Loch Ness

A Loch Ness Monster enthusiast says the mythical monster may have a terrible twin, after capturing jaw-dropping footage of two huge shapes prowling through the loch.

Eoin O’Faodhagain was watching Loch Ness via webcam last Friday when he spotted something in the water that had him seeing double.

Two huge wakes were visible on the surface, moving side by side away from the camera before they combined and vanished.

Mr. O’Faodhagain, 60, said: “I was amazed at this spectacle, I could not get my head around the size of both wakes and the amount of disturbance they were causing.

“I expected to see two powerboats on the surface, but there was nothing to see.

“Then the penny dropped: some sort of live creatures were responsible for these large wakes.”

He continued: “There are two defined wakes on view here, so there are obviously two creatures responsible for them. If they are Nessies – well then, there are two Nessies.”

And Eoin is in no doubt that Nessie is the best explanation. “I have never witnessed seals making wakes of this magnitude,” he said.

“And I cannot make a case for an otter, as you would not see an otter rising a few feet out of the water like that.

Strange Series of Events Follow BAT-WINGED HUMANOID Sighting

A bat-winged humanoid, seven feet tall with a massive wingspan, was reported by a North Carolina woman. It had the body of a man with human-like long legs.

The Singular Fortean Society was contacted last month by North Carolina resident Megan Boyd who wished to report her sighting of a mysterious winged being.

“I saw you on [The Mothman Revisited episode of] Unsolved Mysteries and wanted to reach out about my experience to see if you’ve had similar accounts because what I saw was slightly different than the accounts on the episode," she told investigator Tobias Wayland.

Boyd's experience occurred between 6 and 7 p.m. on November 1st, 2020, in Ruffin, North Carolina. She was in high school at the time and her then-boyfriend was driving her home.

"We were on an old country road, no streetlights or anything, and it had just gotten dark," she said. "I saw what I thought was a ghost decoration in the distance high up in a pine tree by the road since it was just after Halloween. I was confused as to why someone would put a ghost up that high and as we got closer it became very apparent it wasn’t a ghost decoration."

What Boyd had initially thought to be a Halloween decoration turned out to be something far stranger.

"It was huge and opened up its wings. It was all white, not black like the sightings on the show. It swooped down as we were driving, passed us, and scratched the top of his SUV," she explained. "It then started to follow us. It was at least seven feet tall with a massive wingspan. The wings looked like bat wings, transparent-like in the moonlight. But it had the body of a man with man-like long legs."

Her boyfriend sped up in an attempt to escape but the creature stayed with them for several miles, despite their vehicle reaching speeds of at least 80mph. Then, suddenly, it was gone.

"When we got to my house, we looked on the top of his SUV and it had huge scratch marks," Boyd said. "I immediately told my father who made fun of me. My siblings and he tease me to this day except for my brother. Because 14 years later, back in 2014, around the same time of year, he saw [the same creature, also in Ruffin,] but instead of at night it was very early in the morning when it was still dark outside."

“What’s really weird is that when my brother saw this thing, it was less than a quarter of a mile from my home. My brother was living with me at the time because I was a single mom of two young boys,” she added.

Since then, Boyd said she's had several people tell her they've seen the same all-white flying humanoid with batlike wings in the area.

“Other people in this area have had similar sightings,” she said. “A friend I went to high school with told me she saw it probably around 2003 or 2004 at night driving home. My sister even claimed to have seen it about a year ago close by where I live now. And to be honest, I haven’t talked to her too much about it because to think it may be close by me now scares the hell out of me.”

The month after her sighting, Boyd had a frightening experience involving a Ouija board. It was December, and she had a friend staying the night who expressed interest in the divinatory device. The two girls decided to bring out the board and, while they were using it, "the wind started picking up outside and a dog starting howling."

"It felt heavy in the room," Boyd said.

Shortly thereafter, the board spelled "GET OUT."

Immediately ill at ease, the girls decided to stop.

"I actually threw it away not long after," Boyd told Wayland. "[...] And until you asked [if I had experienced anything else unusual before or after my sighting], I didn’t really consider a connection to my sighting and this experience."

Following her encounter with the winged creature, Boyd found herself suddenly afraid of things she had been perfectly comfortable with before.

"For a long time after the incident, I had nightmares. Not just about what happened but other really bizarre nightmares. Sometimes I would wake up and feel like someone was watching me from my bedroom window. My window was about 10-12 feet from the ground though.

I also wouldn’t go outside at night for a while. I was a girl who loved being outside and would even camp out on our trampoline to fall asleep under the stars. But for about a year or so after, I just didn’t feel safe at night alone outside. Again, sometimes I felt as if I was being watched."

While the coloration of the creature reported by Boyd may be unusual, it is not without precedent.

'VISITOR' FOOTSTEPS on the Roof! Creepy Night in Florida

On a trip to Wellborn, Florida, the daughter of the witness and of a friend were terrified by a possible Gray alien being that was watching them from outside. There is more to the story!

I received the following account:

"This event involves my oldest daughter and the oldest daughter of a long-time family friend. My daughters and I drove from Brunswick, Georgia to Wellborn, Florida; which we did several times throughout the year, usually around Halloween so my daughters could celebrate with my friend's daughters. On this trip, we stayed up sitting near a bonfire in her yard, catching up with one another, eventually going inside to settle in for the night. It was October 30, 2003.

I checked on our two oldest daughters who had been watching TV late into the night. My oldest daughter and my friend's oldest daughter were sitting together in the family Lazy Boy recliner. When I went to check on them before bed and tell them not to stay up too late, I noticed that they both looked scared. I asked them what was wrong and they said they 'swore that they just saw a "scary looking" face with big dark eyes'. I asked them to tell me more and they began to cry. My oldest daughter stated that she felt that something was 'watching them' (the living room window was behind the recliner) so she turned to look and said she saw a pale whitish-grey face with big black eyes in the window and that when she turned to look, it stayed only for a moment and then quickly backed away. So when I entered the living room to check on them, it had just happened and they were both scared. So I talked them into going to bed reassuring them it was probably just their imagination and not to worry.

Well, a little later, approximately an hour or so, I heard a sound on the roof, heard the girls crying and sounding scared. So I went into their room where my friend's oldest daughter had a bunk bed and my oldest daughter was on the top bunk. When I entered the room, they were both crying and scared again, claiming that they heard what sounded like tiny feet walking across the roof. I noticed that their pet was acting funny (nervous) too. This friend has also shared stories with me that she and her family have been "visited" before and that she feels she and her family have been abducted over the years. I was never sure, but was curious because I had my own experiences over the years.

On another occasion, at another residential location that this same friend lived at prior, we (my daughters, her kids, and her boyfriend-separate time with more witnesses) all witnessed a bluish glow coming from the woods in front of her house (both locations are way out in the country away from the city) and heard sounds. I remember commenting on that 1st incident when we were outside how I loved the sounds of the owls (there sounded like 2 or 3) hooting back and forth to one another. That's all I remember during this particular incident. It seems that at some point I was able to convince the girls to go back to sleep and we all did. This main incident only had 3 witnesses - myself, my oldest daughter, and my friend's oldest daughter." N

HITCHHIKING 'TIME TRAVELERS' From the Past?

The following account is of a strange experience that occurred to the mother of the submitter when she was age 5, along with her family in the winter of 1957.

"The incident was the picking up of hitchhikers that may or may not be human. The incident bears some similarities with accounts of phantom hitchhikers but goes much further to suggest that they were real flesh and bone beings.

My mother and her family, which consisted of her parents and older sister, lived between the cities of Reidsville and Greensboro in North Carolina. One day they had an errand in Reidsville and on their way there they saw an older couple walking on the opposite side of the road. A couple of hours later, leaving Reidsville on their way home, they saw the same couple in the same spot heading in the same direction as before; almost as if they had been walking on a treadmill having gained no ground at all. They pulled up and asked if they needed a lift and they said they were trying to get to Greensboro to the bus station. My grandfather agreed to take them there but first, they would have to go home to be there in time to pick up their oldest daughter from the school bus near their house.

Once inside the car, it became painfully obvious that they were poorly dressed for the cold icy weather. The woman was wearing a summer dress and sandals and the man a shirt and bib overalls and shoes along with a brimmed hat. My mother being a small child sat between her parents in the front seat but turned around facing the couple staring at the strangers as children do, taking in their appearance. The one thing that stood out in her mind was the man's piercing beautiful blue eyes. The man reached into his pocket and handed her a red pencil with Coca-Cola written on it. When they reached home it was decided that they would have lunch with the couple, who said they were the Bradleys, before the drive to Greensboro. Considering their clothing my grandmother decided to give them more appropriate winter clothing and coats and shoes for the woman who only had sandals. Grandmother also decided to pack them snacks and sandwiches for their trip.

With their guests well-fed and with warmer clothing and snacks, everyone piled into the car to take them to Greensboro. Halfway on their trip, the Bradleys insisted that they needed to be let off on a bridge on old US Highway 29. Grandfather protested saying no they would likely not get another ride and being winter it would be getting dark soon and insisted on carrying them all the way. But they said, 'No!' They must be left off on the bridge. A sort of back and forth occurred between my grandfather and the Bradleys with them asking to please be let off on the bridge. Unable to change their mind he obliged and stopped the car. They opened the door and got out and immediately disappeared, leaving the door still open. My Grandfather was horrified, jumping out of the car, looking to see if they had fallen down on the ice out of his view. But they were nowhere to be found. He looked all about and called for them but nothing but silence. The whole area was clear as far as he could see but still nothing. He got back in the car with his family, severely upset and confused as to what just happened as was everybody else. Frantically they drove up and down the road looking for them wondering if they had somehow got another ride, trying to rationalize the obviously spectacular disappearance of the Bradleys. After a fruitless search, they drove back home confused as to what had occurred.

This made a huge impression on my mother, having distinctly remembered the incident all her life. So the question remains - who were the Bradleys? Were they ghosts? But ghosts don't stay all afternoon with you and eat lunch. Furthermore when they disappeared the clothes given to them disappeared as well. Even the sandwiches that were packed for them. This suggests that they were solid beings. Also, why did they insist on being let off on the bridge, saying it must be done? Was it some sort of portal or gateway home? The whole thing remains a mystery.” J
