Sony WF-1000XM5 vs Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II: Which is better?
Sony’s WF-1000XM5 are the successor to the WF-1000XM4, and in many ways we feel they’ve surpassed its predecessor. But how do they fare against the rival Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II?
The battle between Sony and Bose has moved across over-ears and true wireless earphones. Both the WF-1000XM5 and QuietComfort Earbuds II received five stars in their respective reviews – both premium true wireless offer a high quality performance.
So, which out of the Sony WF-1000XM5 vs Bose QuietComfort Earbuds is the best? Read on to find out.
PriceThe WF-1000XM5 go on sale August 2023, and have an RRP of £259 / $299 / €320. Compared to the WF-1000XM4, the price has gone slightly up in the UK, $20 in the US and €40 more in Europe.
The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II are £279 / $299 / €279 / CA$379 / AU$429, though as they’ve been available since late 2022, you can find them for cheaper than the WF-1000XM5. Currys UK has them at £229 and at Amazon UK they’re at £239.95 at the time of writing.
DesignThe Sony WF-1000XM5 are more compact than the QuietComfort Earbuds II, which you might describe as being the chunkier of the two buds. Both offer a strong noise-isolating seal against external sounds, although in our experience we found the Bose were a little easier to get settled in our ears, though over longer use we found the Sony more comfortable to wear.

Each comes with a range of ear-tips, the WF-1000XM5 comes with extra small to large ear-tips in the packaging, while the Bose has three sizes: small, medium, and large. If you want extra small or extra large ear-tips, you’ll need to go through Bose Support to order them.
Both utilise touch controls and out of the two we’d say the Sony are a little easier to operate as on the Bose some taps can be interpreted as swipes, which inadvertently increase the volume. IPX4 sweat/water resistance is covered across both earphones for those who might consider using these earbuds in the gym.

We think the Sony WF-1000XM5 have the better overall design but there’s not much to knock the Bose for. The Sony are smaller, (slightly) lighter, and arguably more comfortable to wear.
FeaturesWe won’t go through all the features presented on these wireless earphones as you might be here all day, but in terms of the amount of features on offer, then the Sony wins easily. The spread of the smart, convenient features is impressive. There isn’t a wireless earbuds as feature-rich as the WF-1000XM5.
Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are built-in on the WF-1000XM5 (that’s not the case on the Bose). There’s also greater flexibility in terms of customising the experience from the audio EQ, wireless performance, noise-cancelling modes, upscaling of audio. The Sony presents more options with which to tailor the performance to your liking.

Battery life is longer on the Sony with eight hours compared to the QuietComfort Earbuds II’s six. However, overall battery if you include the charging case is the same with noise-cancelling on (24 hours). Wireless charging is supported on the Sony but not on the Bose (we don’t think it’s that big a miss).
In terms of its wireless performance, we would say that the Bose is more stable and resilient to interference over a Bluetooth connection. The Sony does support the higher quality LDAC codec for an improved audio performance though, and we’re yet to see the aptX Adaptive/Snapdragon Sound support that was announced several months ago. You also get Bluetooth multipoint on the Sony for those who like to multi-task.
Or course, the real test is how well they perform in cancelling sounds, and in this area we’d give the win to the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II. Both cancel noise very well, though we find the Bose suppresses sounds a little stronger, while the Sony’s noise-cancelling adopts a more natural tone (the Bose can sound processed).

The transparency mode is slightly clearer and more detailed on the Bose too, but the difference is not a huge amount. The Bose also has a cool feature whereby in its ‘Aware’ mode, Bose’s ActiveSense technology kicks in and suppresses any loud sounds so you’re not suddenly surprised by them. It works very effectively.
Call quality on both is mixed. Both have a tendency to let noise in when you’re speaking, though it is worse on the Bose as in busy areas it can reach the point where the sounds of the environment can be distracting.
Overall, the Sony offers the wider range of features, especially for those who like to customise their experience to fit their daily routine. Though we’d add a note to say that the noise-cancelling on the Bose is better.
Sound QualityIf sound is the most important aspect for you, then again we’d say that the Sony would be the better choice. Like the Bose their approach is a balanced one, but we find the Sony to be the more musical-sounding pair with the tracks we listen.

Support for LDAC does help in this context, but even so, with the new Dynamic Driver X, they put in an energetic, detailed and clear performance with music. To our ears they sound more natural than the QuietComfort Earbuds II.
However, the Sony don’t offer the same bass impact as the Bose. The Bose buds offer a bigger, weightier bass performance while the Sony takes a more measured approach to the low frequencies. If you like you bass the QuietComfort Earbuds would be the earbuds to take a closer look at, though be mindful that you could get a similar bass performance by altering the WF-1000XM5’s EQ settings.

Although we’ve given the Sony WF-1000XM5 the win in each category, it would not be true to say that they are far and away the better true wireless earbud.
They are the better-sounding of the two, but in terms of noise-cancellation we prefer the Bose. The range of features on the Sony is much greater, and offer more convenience, while the compact design and slightly better comfort levels are further areas where we feel the Sony edges ahead.
Both are great buys. As an overall package, the WF-1000XM5 ticks most, if not all, the required boxes. Nevertheless, if you want the best noise-cancellation currently available, then the QuietComfort Earbuds II are the buds to get.

Survivor to get PS4 and Xbox One versions after all
It’s been announced that one of the biggest current-gen games of the year so far, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, will be coming to PS4 and Xbox One consoles after all.
Ahead of the game’s launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC earlier this year, publisher EA and developer Respawn claimed that it was simply too technically ambitious to launch on previous-gen consoles.
Now, however, EA CEO Andrew House has reversed course entirely (via The Verge). “Thanks to the strength of this legendary franchise and community demand, our development team has committed to bringing this Jedi experience to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” he announced at EA’s Q1 earnings call on Tuesday.
Given that Respawn struggled to get Star Wars Jedi: Survivor running adequately on the current-gen set-ups for which it was supposedly custom-made, this sounds rather ambitious. We’re trying to imagine the frame rate and graphical compromises that will be required to hit ‘playable’ status on PS4 and Xbox One.
On the flip side, it’s great in concept that many more people are going to be able to play one of the biggest games of the year. Despite its technical gremlins, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor turned out to be one of the best games of 2023 so far.
It’s a sequel to 2019’s popular Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and offers a broadly similar combination of Soulslike third person combat and light Metroidvania progression. However, this year’s sequel has taken full advantage of current gen power and made environments way bigger and more expansive.
Or so we thought. It’ll be interesting to see how Jedi: Survivor handles on PS4 and Xbox One, whenever it launches.

Disgraced Former FBI Agent and Russia Hoaxer Peter Strzok Encourages Parlay Bets on Trump Indictments and Co-Conspirators | The Gateway Pundit
“Russia, Russia, Russia” hoaxer and disgraced former FBI Agent Peter Strzok took to Twitter today to ask for advice on betting. Apparently, Strzok wants to know if he should “swing for the fence” with a 4-leg parlay.
Yes, people are betting on upcoming indictments as if this is some sort of joke. Of course, to someone (formerly) of power who was to remain unbiased and apolitical and who completely and totally misled the American public for years in order to undermine the very man he’s suggesting betting against is par for the course in this Banana Republic. He thinks of this as some sort of joke. To think at one point this man was a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigations!
Strzok, in addition to his involvement in and parroting of the Russia Hoax, also when famously asked by his mistress “[Trump’s] not ever going to become president, right? Right?!”, he infamously replied, “No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it.” Two FBI Agents saying they will stop the Trump Presidency sure sounds like a “conspiracy”.
Here is fired FBI agent Peter Strzok.

This is how you know they’re all in on it https://t.co/CwMHiwKiO8
— George (@BehizyTweets) August 2, 2023
The Trump indictment referenced by Strzok is based on “baseless” election fraud claims (that have not been disproven in Court), Mike Pence sending back electors to the states (as it was going to be Constitutionally contested by members Congress, including a motion to recess for 10-days while an audit was conducted as per Senator Ted Cruz), and the protest at the Capitol on January 6th, where President Trump said to “peacefully and patriotically” make our voices heard.
The provable false claim of an “insurrection,” as the mainstream media loves to chirp like a Mockingbird searching for a mate despite not a single charge of 18 USC 2383, was well under way before President Trump was even done speaking (he was over an hour late from his scheduled time). And several of the initial breaches occurred around an unindicted individual who was urging protesters the night before to go “IN TO THE CAPITOL! That’s where our problems are!” That same individual would later text a relative that he “organized” it. But despite other J6ers being indicted for far less, he himself remains unindicted more than two and a half years later.
What are the odds that the alternate elector theory gets squashed under the basis described by Politico, CNN’s Van Jones and Lawrence Lessig on Nov 4, 2020, and George Mason University Law Professor Todd Zywicki in his expert testimony, as reported by The Gateway Pundit last week?

‘This Will Be Your Legacy!” – Rudy Giuliani STARTS SCREAMING at Jack Smith Following Latest Junk Indictments Against President Trump – Says He Was Never Notified or Served in the Case! | The Gateway Pundit
Once again, President Trump was indicted on Tuesday – the DAY AFTER Hunter Biden’s best friend and business associate Devon Archer testified that the Joe Biden was included on 20 calls when his son was sitting with foreign officials arranging influence peddling deals for the family.
Archer also testified that Joe Biden met with Russia’s Yelena Baturina who invested $40 million into Hunter Biden’s real estate ventures. And she also paid Hunter Biden $3.5 million in consulting fees. Joe Biden later excluded Baturina from his Russian sanctions list.
So what happened next? President Trump was indicted again today by corrupt Special Counsel Jack Smith.
For those paying attention this is not the first time this has happened. There have been at least six times now where new evidence was released implicating the Biden Crime Family and then President Trump is indicted by the Biden regime the next day.
President Trump was indicted along with six co-conspirators.
CNN named five of the co-conspirators tonight including Rudy Giuliani.
Rudy later went on with Eric Bolling to discuss today’s indictment. Rudy was in rare form. The former New York City Mayor screamed at corrupt Special Counsel Jack Smith. Only in government can you fail your way to the top. That is Jack Smith’s story.
Rudy Giuliani: If you don’t agree with the regime, they try to disbar you and they try to imprison you. What does that sound like? Sounds like Communist China to me. Not the United States of America. Biden has ruined our country. It’s a disgrace what he’s done. And I don’t care if you hate Donald Trump. This is a violation of his right of free speech. You even have a right to lie under the First Amendment. Now, he (Trump) didn’t. The strange thing here is the people lying are the people bringing this and this count they have here, conspiracy against rights. They should be indicted for conspiracy against rights for bringing this indictment…
…I don’t have any information that he violated any law. What I do have is I would seriously consider indicting them for 18 USC. Section 241. For indicting a man for exercising his right of free speech, that’s a conspiracy against rights. These people are dangerous.
On Joe Biden… Rudy Giuliani: There’s no way this wasn’t rushed, because it’s also poorly written and has a lot of mistakes in it. This was rushed for two reasons. One, yesterday, Biden got his head kicked in completely. The false exculpatory statements that were revealed yesterday, 24 of which most lawyers would understand this, completely convict him. Under the law, a false exculpatory statement is as powerful as a confession that comes right out of evidence, textbooks. What Archer did is prove that for ten years, Biden has been lying completely. All of that can be used against him as evidence of guilt. It’s very, very powerful. It’s much more damaging than, I think even a lot of the Congressmen realized. And it makes him, like, probably not only the biggest crook in American history. The biggest liar.
Then Rudy Giuliani starts screaming at criminal partisan hack Jack Smith: Long ago I stopped being careful. And I don’t worry about the Jack Smith’s of this world. I have a chapter in my book called Stand Up to Bullies. So here’s what I say to Jack Smith after the Supreme Court threw out your case, which should have been a disgrace and you should have gone and found another profession because you don’t belong in this one. This one will be your legacy. Violating the right of free speech of an American citizen, never mind whether he was president or not. It could be anybody. It could be a homeless person. You don’t get to violate people’s First Amendment right, Smith, no matter who the hell you are or no matter how sick you are with Trump derangement syndrome. And this isn’t the first time you’ve acted like an unethical lawyer. It should be the last.

It’s a hot 0-day summer for Apple, Google, and Microsoft security fixes
The summer patch cycle shows no signs of slowing down, with tech giants Apple, Google, and Microsoft releasing multiple updates to fix flaws being used in real-life attacks. July also saw serious bugs squashed by enterprise software firms SAP, Citrix, and Oracle.
Here’s everything you need to know about the major patches released during the month.
Apple iOS and iPadOS 16.6Apple had a busy July after issuing two separate security updates during the month. The iPhone maker’s first update came in the form of a security-only Rapid Security Response patch.

It was only the second time Apple had issued a Rapid Security Response, and the process was not as smooth as the first. On July 10, Apple released iOS 16.5.1 9 (a) to fix a single WebKit flaw already being used in attacks, but the iPhone maker quickly retracted it after discovering that the patch broke several websites for users. Apple reissued the update as iOS 16.5.1 (c) a few days later, at last fixing the WebKit issue without breaking anything else.
Later in the month, Apple’s major point upgrade iOS 16.6 appeared with 25 security fixes, including the already exploited WebKit bug patched in iOS 16.5.1 (c), tracked as .
Among the other bugs squashed in iOS 16.6 are 11 in the Kernel at the core of the iOS operating system, one of which Apple said is already being used in attacks. The Kernel flaw is the third iOS issue discovered by security outfit Kaspersky as part of the zero-click “Triangulation spyware” attacks.
Apple also released iOS 15.7.8 for users of older devices, as well as iPadOS 16.6, Safari 16.6, macOS Ventura 13.5, macOS Monterey 12.6.8, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9, tvOS 16.6, and watchOS 9.6.
Advertisement MicrosoftMicrosoft’s July Patch Tuesday is an update to look out for because it fixes 132 vulnerabilities, including multiple zero-day flaws. First things first: One of the bugs detailed in the patch update, tracked as CVE-2023-36884, has not yet been fixed. In the meantime, the tech giant has offered steps to mitigate the already exploited flaw, which has apparently been used in attacks by a Russian cybercrime gang.
Other zero-day flaws included in Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday are CVE-2023-32046, a platform elevation of privilege bug in the MSHTML core Windows component, and CVE-2023-36874, a vulnerability in the Windows Error Reporting service that could allow an attacker to gain admin rights. Meanwhile, CVE-2023-32049 is an already exploited vulnerability in the Windows SmartScreen feature.
It goes without saying that you should update as soon as possible while keeping an eye out for the fix for CVE-2023-36884.
Google AndroidGoogle has updated its Android operating system, fixing dozens of security vulnerabilities, including three it says “may be under limited, targeted exploitation.”
The first of the already exploited vulnerabilities is CVE-2023-2136, a remote code execution (RCE) bug in the System with a CVSS score of 9.6. The critical security vulnerability could lead to RCE with no additional privileges needed, according to the tech firm. “User interaction is not needed for exploitation,” Google warned.
CVE-2023-26083 is an issue in Arm Mali GPU driver for Bifrost, Avalon, and Valhall chips, rated as having a moderate impact. The vulnerability was used to deliver spyware to Samsung devices in December 2022.
CVE-2021-29256 is a high-severity flaw that also impacts Bifrost and Midgard Arm Mali GPU kernel drivers.
The Android updates have already reached Google’s Pixel devices and some of Samsung’s Galaxy range. Given the severity of this month’s bugs, it’s a good idea to check whether the update is available and install it now.
Google Chrome 115Google has issued the Chrome 115 update for its popular browser, fixing 20 security vulnerabilities, four of which are rated as having a high impact. and are use-after-free bugs in WebRTC. The third flaw rated as having a high severity is CVE-2023-3730, a use-after-free vulnerability in Tab Groups, while CVE-2023-3732 is an out-of-bounds memory access bug in Mojo.
Six of the flaws are listed as having a medium severity, and none of the vulnerabilities are known to have been used in real-life attacks. Even so, Chrome is a highly targeted platform, so check your system for updates.

Best Waterproof Rain Hats For Women
Summer is fast becoming a washout. It almost feels like we’ve had no summer at all as weeks stretch by with grey clouds and showers and barely a ray of sunshine in sight. As we pack away our picnic blankets and swimsuits earlier than planned (sob), we’re reaching instead for rainwear. And for many of us, a waterproof hat is top of the list.
A waterproof jacket will keep your body dry and waterproof shoes will mean no soggy socks but what about your head? Umbrellas are useful, sure, but they have a frustrating tendency to disappear or turn themselves inside out the minute the wind picks up. Slip a waterproof hat into your bag or a pocket, however, and you’re always prepared for an unexpected downpour or sudden thunderstorm. That’s right, this summer we’re taking fashion inspiration from none other than Paddington Bear and opting for a rain hat (with or without the matching wellies).
Canvas fisherman hats are usually the headwear of choice for summer, shielding necks and foreheads from the sun, but this year we’re pivoting towards nylon, vinyl and other water-resistant fabrics. With an eye on the unpredictable British weather, we’re shopping both sunny shades and basic blacks, browns and beiges that work with any outfit. Even on a not-so-rainy day, they look chic AF. Scroll on to see some of our favourite options.

Bernie Sanders Now Asking DOJ to Prosecute People in the Fossil Fuel Industry for Dissenting on Climate Change | The Gateway Pundit
People on the left have been screaming about authoritarianism and fascism for years now, but when you look at what they are actually doing, the give they game away.
Bernie Sanders now wants to use the power and force of government to prosecute people in the fossil fuels industry for dissenting from the progressive line on climate change.
Doesn’t that sound an awful lot like… authoritarianism and fascism?
RedState reports:
TERRIFYING: Bernie Sanders Wants to Prosecute Climate Change Dissenters
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders led a gaggle of fellow lawmakers in writing a letter to the Justice Department demanding that it prosecute people in the fossil fuel industry for saying things about climate change that progressives don’t like:
A group of left-wing senators led by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., are demanding that the Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecute the fossil fuel industry over its alleged climate disinformation campaign.
In a letter Monday to Attorney General Merrick Garland, the Senate coalition — joined also by Sens. Ed Markey, D-Mass., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. — argued fossil fuel companies have conducted a “longstanding and carefully coordinated campaign” to mislead Americans about the risks posed by global warming and “discredit climate science” in pursuit of profits. If the DOJ were to pursue such a case again the fossil fuel industry, it would mark the first time the federal government got involved in climate nuisance litigation.
“The actions of ExxonMobil, Shell, and potentially other fossil fuel companies represent a clear violation of federal racketeering laws, truth in advertising laws, consumer protection laws, and potentially other laws, and the Department must act swiftly to hold them accountable for their unlawful actions,” the four senators wrote to Garland on Monday.
“The fossil fuel industry has had scientific evidence about the dangers of climate change and the role that burning fossil fuels play in increasing global temperatures for more than 50 years,” the lawmakers continued. “Despite these companies’ knowledge about climate change and the role their industry was playing in driving carbon emissions, they chose to participate in a decades-long, carefully coordinated campaign of misinformation to obfuscate climate science and convince the public that fossil fuels are not the primary driver of climate change.”
The left wants to make it illegal to disagree with them, it’s really that simple.
They are the fascists that they constantly accuse others of being.

Meta plans AI-powered chatbots to boost social media numbers
Benj Edwards / Getty Images
Meta is reportedly developing a range of AI-powered chatbots with different personalities, a move aimed at increasing user engagement on social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, according to the Financial Times and The Verge. The chatbots, called “personas” by Meta staff, will mimic human-like conversations and might take on various character forms, such as Abraham Lincoln or a surfer-like travel adviser.
The move to introduce chatbots to Meta platforms comes amid growing competition from social media platforms like TikTok and a rising interest in AI technology. Meta has also made big investments into generative AI recently, including the release of a new large language model, Llama 2, which could power its upcoming chatbots.
During a recent earnings call, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that the company envisions AI agents acting as assistants and coaches, facilitating interactions between users, businesses, and creators. He also hinted at the development of AI agents for customer service and an internal AI-powered productivity assistant for staff.
“You can imagine lots of ways that AI can help people connect and express themselves in our apps, creative tools that make it easier and more fun to share content, agents that act as assistants, coaches or help you interact with businesses and creators and more,” he said.
AdvertisementHowever, the Financial Times says that some experts are voicing concerns over the plans. Ravit Dotan, an AI ethics adviser and co-founder of the Collaborative AI Responsibility Lab at the University of Pittsburgh, warns that interactions with chatbots might pose a personal privacy hazard for users.
“Once users interact with a chatbot, it really exposes much more of their data to the company, so that the company can do anything they want with that data,” she told the outlet.
Privacy aside, concerns about social media addiction have also been common among critics of Facebook in the past, and introducing engaging simulated people into social networks may make it harder for some people to stop using them—although that might be exactly the point.
Meta isn’t the first social media company to experiment with AI-powered chatbots. In February, Snap announced a “My AI” chatbot designed to serve as an amusing conversationalist and possibly an adviser for trip or product recommendations, despite admissions about its propensity to confabulate inaccurate or potentially dangerous information. And beyond social media, chatbots on sites like Character.AI have proven popular among some people as a form of entertainment.
Despite these risks, Meta thinks that its artificial personas could provide a fun and interactive element on its platforms, besides functioning as a search tool and offering recommendations. The company plans to roll them out as early as September.

Rudy Giuliani Goes On TV And Gives Jack Smith More Evidence Against Trump

The federal indictment doesn’t charge Trump with lying. The lie when expressed as an opinion is free speech. The problem is that Trump used his lie as a basis to defraud the United States, carry out an obstruction of government function, and try to take away the vote. It wasn’t the lie, but the actions that were criminal.
Rudy Giuliani is admitting that it was all a lie. He is making it impossible for Trump to put up the pretext of a defense that he thought he won the election.
Giuliani keeps opening his mouth and giving Jack Smith more ammo to use to lock Trump up.

Western Digital HDD capacity hits 28TB as Seagate looks to 30TB and beyond
Enlarge / Western Digital is gearing up to sample its first 28TB HDDs to customers, around a year after announcing its first 26TB drives.
Western Digital
After a couple of decades of talk, Seagate announced earlier this year that it was shipping samples of huge 32TB hard drives using heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). The new kind of drive technology uses lasers to heat disk platters during writing, making it possible to store more data on a disk without increasing its physical size.
But there’s still a bit more capacity to be wrung out of older and more-proven recording technologies like perpendicular (or conventional) magnetic recording (PMR/CMR, often used interchangeably) and shingled magnetic recording (SMR); Western Digital announced this week that it’s preparing to sample huge 28TB hard drives based on those technologies, a little over a year after announcing its first 26TB model.
According to Tom’s Hardware, WD uses energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording (ePMR) to fit up to 24TB of data on a single drive. SMR allows magnetic tracks to overlap slightly (like the shingles on a roof), allowing slightly more data to fit onto the same physical platters at the expense of write performance—this boosts the capacity of these drives to 28TB.
AdvertisementDuring its most recent earnings call, Western Digital CEO David Goeckeler reiterated that 28TB wasn’t the end for its ePMR and SMR-based hard drives. Past roadmaps have indicated that 30TB and 32TB SMR drives should also be possible, though these drives aren’t ready for sampling to Western Digital’s customers yet.
Western Digital is working on HAMR-capable drives, too, but the company doesn’t think they’ll be available in volume until late 2025 at the earliest. Seagate expects to ship its first 32TB HAMR drives before then, and the company has already talked about HAMR drives as large as 50TB being tested in its labs.
Western Digital’s earnings are buffeted by some of the same forces affecting other PC hardware and software companies like Intel and Microsoft. The company’s earnings for Q4 2023 were down 5 percent year over year, mostly driven by an 18 percent drop in revenue for its cloud business. Its client and consumer businesses—drives sold to PC makers and directly to consumers—grew slightly. This time last year, all three divisions were down by double digits compared to 2022, so the post-pandemic PC slump could be bottoming out.
