Crystallized Tears

Streams in the DesertIf you’ve been reading my blog for very long, you already know my affection for the updated version of the classic devotional, Streams in the Desert, by LB Cowman & edited by James Reimann. (And by the way, the Kindle version is only $1.99 at the moment.)

The entries in this devotional have helped carry me through the most difficult times in the past decade. The book was first recommended to me by a dear friend who had lost her mother and it helped her through that time of grief. When by “chan...

“An Emotionally Powerful Story”

A Bride for All SeasonsFirst, before I say anything else, congratulations to Cathie who won the $30 gift card in my drawing to celebrate the release of A Bride for All Seasons. She received the Barnes and Noble e-gift card this morning and said she was headed to the store to go shopping for books tonight. How fun! And thanks to everyone who entered.

I’m past the halfway point in another historical romance novella (the last novella planned for a while; next up is a new historical romance series), and I’m having great...

Movie Review: Quartet

QuartetNone of us are getting any younger. We all know that, right? Maybe knowing that’s why I enjoy films like Quartet so much.

The four actors who play the quartet of the title are Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, and Pauline Collins. All of them are superb (no surprise there), as are many of the supporting players. Directed by Dustin Hoffman, the movie is set in a British home for retired musicians where the annual concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Je...

Another Entry in My Journal 10+

Journal 10+I use a 8.5 x 11 journal called Journal 10+ to track my writing. This one will last me through 2017. It is so helpful to be able to look back at the progress I was making in other years, and I highly recommend it to everyone but especially to fellow authors. I use a different color of ink for each book (A Promise Kept is red; The Heart’s Pursuit is sky blue; my current WIP is lime green) which makes them easy to tell apart at a glance.

Tuesday morning, I wrote this in the journal: “Finished A...

Bye-bye, Google Reader

FeedlyIf you are someone (like me) who has made a habit of reading blogs via an RSS reader, then you are probably aware that Google Reader, the tool the majority (?) of us have been using for eight years, will be no more as of July 1st. Ever since the announcement a few months ago, there has been a spate of blog posts about what we might use to replace that service. I’ve read a lot of them.

For a long while now, I have used the Reeder app on my MacBook, iPhone, and iPad to read the blogs I subscribe...

Some of the Sweetest Words

PencilBeing a novelist sets one up for plenty of rejection. Trust me on this. Because even when a writer sells a book and even when it looks like said writer has had an easy go of it, he or she will still have countless opportunities to be rejected in the future. By reviewers. By readers. By friends. By colleagues. By agents.

Because of those times of rejection, I have learned to savor all the more those wonderful moments when sweet words come my way. On Friday, my editor sent me my line edits for A...

750 Miles!

Remember that line from the movie,Dave? “We’re walking. We’re walking.”750 miles badgeWell, today while walking on the treadmill, Iearned my 750 miles badge on FitBit.

FitBit ZipI have tried more than one kind of pedometer in my effort to move more. I used the BodyMedia arm band for a while, but I kept ripping it off. It made me claustrophobic and irritated my skin. I’ve tried a couple of other brands, too.

But the FitBit Zip is my step counter of choice. The Zip doesn’t count stairs or sleep patterns. It tracks steps...
