When Writing Deadlines Collide

When Writing Deadlines CollideYou know that nervous little quiver you can get in your stomach when panic wants to rise up and defeat you before you even begin? Deadlines can do that to you.

I am in the early chapters of writing a new book in a new series that will release in November 2014. It’s going along quite well, but I’m still feeling my way in the story as I meet new characters and they face new circumstances. It’s a contemporary story with an historical thread running through it, which I love. And my per day word co...

Story Settings

Home on the BoulevardWhile characters reign supreme for me as a novelist, story settings are important to me too.

Through the years, I’ve “created” a number of towns in which to set my stories, most of them set somewhere in Idaho, a few of them elsewhere. Of course, all novelists do this to one degree or another. Even when they use a real town or city, they add a house or a street or a business. This is true in historicals and contemporaries.

As long as you surround your fictional setting with reality, your readers...

Who Are the Prayer Warriors in Your Life?

Robin & LauriEleven years ago, I attended a novelist retreat where another writer spoke about the importance of having a prayer team. I felt a quickening in my spirit that I needed to do this.

Unbeknownst to me, I was about to enter a difficult season where I would be crossing a long, dark valley. I thought I was to put together a prayer team only to pray for my ministry of writing and for a specific book that I knew would be difficult to write. Turns out, I was going to need prayer over many areas of my l...

No Wonder It Feels Like Life is Whizzing By

I was trying to catch up with reading the blogs I subscribe to this morning. Usually I stay up with them, but travel always puts me behind. I had close to 500 posts in my Feedly. Needless to say, I skimmed the vast majority of them. But this graphic caught my eye and I just had to share it with you.

Brainstorming Expands Your Brain

Creativity Loves To Be Set Free!Like it or not (and I definitely don’t like it), another wonderful year of brainstorming in Northern Idaho is coming to a close. For eleven summers, a group of writers has been gathering in Coeur d’Alene to plot, play, and pray. I’ve shared about it every year, I think, and a couple of years ago, I wrote a post called Brainstorming 101 so others could see how we operate.

These gals have given me tons of great ideas through the years, but this year the timing was so perfect as I am about to sta...

Countdown to the Release of BELOVED

I am so excited about the upcoming release of Beloved. Just two months from today.

I feel a special affection for Diana and Tyson. Not sure why, other than I love stories about second chances, and boy-oh-boy, does Tyson ever need a second chance with Diana. I can’t help believing that this is a perfect conclusion for the Where the Heart Lives series.

Where the Heart Lives series

I will be running a couple of contests over the next two months so watch for the first of them to appear soon.

RWA 2013 and a Facebook Party

I wrote this blog post as I returned from the Romance Writers of America conference in Atlanta where some 2100 romance writers and publishing professionals gathered for four days of workshops, networking, and the awards ceremony that is––I kid you not––on par with the Oscars

IMG_0587RWA was founded in 1980. I had the honor to serve on the Board of Directors for five years, two of which were as RWA’s President. There are so many wonderful people who I am privileged to call “friends” because of RWA. (Ph...
