Pay it Forward Friday with VAMPIRES OF THE SCARLET ORDER by Author David Lee Summers
Lots of love, Emily

My Review
Vampires of the Scarlet Order
Book 1 By Author David Lee Summers
Soldiers of fortune and seekers of acceptance is the way I would describe the first book, Vampires of the Scarlet Order by Award Winning Author David Lee Summers.The novel opens with an introduction to a young man wanting to obtain revenge and suffering from extreme loneliness. In the High Middle Ages, he meets Lord Draco, and is recruited to the Scarlet Order vampire mercenaries.
I was entranced with the history. I felt like I was there. Fear and honor ran through my fingertips as I read. It was strange, but the alliance with the Church, seemed to almost make sense. A great character and somewhat sad, Lord Draco endeared himself to my soul.
Quickly, I was whisked away from the Middle Ages to the Wild, Wild West in the United States. I felt like the shift happened flawlessly. The real life characters were written so well, that I thought I was actually getting an eyewitness encounter with Billy the Kid!
Then to Modern Times we come to more characters which emerge and captured my attention. I loved the way Mr. Summers does not “villainize” the vampires. He makes me want to cheer for them and cry for their loneliness and heartbreaks.
Vampires of the Scarlet Order took me on a wild ride from year to year and century to century. I absolutely became enthralled with the characters. Desmond, Lord Draco being my favorite! Even if you are not a fan of Paranormal, this novel should be on your list.
What got me is that even after reading it, I’m still wondering about the Vampires of the Scarlet Order. I love the cover too, it seems to leap at me!
For this, and so much more, I will have to rate this novel as FIVE STARS and must read for all!

About
Vampires of the Scarlet Order:
Vampires of the Scarlet Order is an action-adventure novel about an elite cadre of vampire mercenaries who have worked throughout history as pinpoint assassins. Under the command of Desmond, Lord Draco, the Scarlet Order worked for the Spanish Inquisition, Napoleon, and helped to defeat the Ottoman Empire. Now, at the dawn of the 21st century, vampires are too expensive, too untrustworthy, and frankly, too passé for governments to employ any longer. Nanotechnology can be employed to engineer more reliable super soldiers. What’s a vampire got to do for job security?

Excerpt from
Vampires of the Scarlet Order
From the journals of Dr. Jane Heckman: Toward a Theory of Vampirism
I have been a vampire for just over a month now and I’m still sorting out what exactly it means to “be a vampire.” I am not aware of any formal, scientific study of vampires. It would appear that we are rare creatures. Classical studies such as Montague Summers’ The Vampire, His Kith and Kin and The Vampire in Europe do little more than survey vampire literature and relate second and third-hand accounts of vampire encounters. More recent studies do little more.
My own field is ballistic and explosive physics, not anthropology, biology or any other field of study that might be more relevant to the study of vampires, which are also known by such names as nosferatu, revenant, vrykolakas and so forth depending on the region of the vampire’s origin. This journal will endeavor to be a first-hand account of my observations. However, since the study of creatures such as vampires is outside my discipline, these notes may lack completeness.
I was born a human but became a vampire through a process of being attacked by a vampire that drank my blood. I, in turn, drank the blood of the attacking vampire. My attacker claims to be a 550-year-old vampire who calls himself Rudolfo.
* * *
“For the record, my name is Rudolfo Jésus Juan Ramírez de Córdoba.” Rudolfo’s voice caused me to jump involuntarily.“How long have you been looking over my shoulder?” I asked huffily laying my pen down.
“Only a few minutes. I saw the title and thought I’d do what I could to clear up any misconceptions you may give your poor readers about me or about vampires in general.” Rudolfo shrugged nonchalantly.
I took a deep breath then let it out slowly. “I’d rather you not stare over my shoulder.”
Rudolfo grinned. “What do I have better to do than watch a beautiful woman work? Besides, it’s interesting.”
I waved my hands at the older vampire. “You could go watch television or something. There’s lots of women to watch there.”
“I hate television,” said Rudolfo, wrinkling his nose. “The stories jump all around. Just as they get interesting, some shill comes on to sell me something I don’t need. It’s very annoying.”
“All right, all right,” I relented. “Get a chair or something, just don’t stand there. It makes me nervous.” I paused for a moment then looked at Rudolfo again, my brow furrowed. “Are you really a vampire named Jésus?”
“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” he said, eyes twinkling as he pulled up a chair.
* * *
As a vampire, I find my outward appearance is very nearly the same as it was when I was human. At the time I became a vampire, I was a woman of 42. Admittedly, some of the changes I record are qualitative: My skin has become smoother and more taut, yet somewhat more pale, taking on something of an alabaster quality. My eye color seems more vivid. My lips seem fuller and a brighter shade of red.My senses also seem to be improved. I can hear fainter sounds and see more distant objects. Looking up at the night sky, I am able to distinguish the rings of Saturn, something well beyond normal human ability. I should emphasize that my vision does not seem to magnify objects. I simply seem to have improved resolution, as though there are more rods and cones in my eyes. Perhaps an eye test with a qualified optometrist would be in order.
I appear to have acquired the ability to sense the thoughts of others and to project my own thoughts into the minds of others. Though various studies have been made, I know of no study that has definitively demonstrated the existence of telepathy in humans. I also know of no satisfactory hypothesis describing a mechanism for telepathy. Perhaps further study of this ability with vampires would yield better results than it has with humans.
I have become stronger. It is much easier for me to load my crossbow than before I became a vampire. I can now easily subdue and feed upon human males that I estimate to be two and a half times my weight. Because I was neither a violent person nor the subject of an attack prior to becoming a vampire, I do not know what I was capable of as a human. However, I strongly suspect I was not capable of such a feat of physical prowess.
More quantitatively: My canine teeth now extend approximately 0.125 inches below the neighboring teeth. In spite of what is shown in many vampire movies, my canine teeth do not retract, they are fixed much like those of a dog.
* * *
“What an unflattering comparison,” muttered Rudolfo.
Turning around, I scowled at him. “What do you mean? Dogs have long canine teeth. It’s a reasonable comparison.”
“So do cats,” he said, grinning wistfully, displaying his own fangs. “And I would say you have feline grace and charm.”
“If you don’t stop interrupting, you’ll see what a bitch I can be,” I growled.

Our races are sworn enemies of each other…
“Our races are sworn enemies of each other. The Blood-Hunters and Light-Bearers are ancient rivals. However, Tab and I have a special relationship. We are not enemies. We are connected by love.” Charmeine explained to Shane.Tabbruis looked at her with surprise and his lips curled with a smile.
Charmeine hung her head thinking maybe she shouldn’t have said it, but it was how she felt. She turned and gazed in his eyes. “Yes, I said love and meant it, Tab.”
Smiling wide now, Tabbruis lovingly took her hand, kissed it, and enfolded his hands over hers. White sparks encircled their hands.Then Tabbruis looked at Shane and pulled a hand away. His heart became heavy with what he was about to say. “It is true. My race is called Blood-Hunters or Elders. The Elders are run by an Elder Council. They have a prison secured by Elder Temple Guards. We are supposed to track, hunt and kill Light-Bearers. They are the only threat we have on Earth. Since Charleen is a Light-Bearer, she was probably going to be captured and sent to the Elder Temple to be put to death on the Altar of Judgment.”
Charmeine realized what danger she had been in. Her body shuttered thinking about it.
Shane’s mouth hung open in disbelief.
“Furthermore, the Elder Council monitors and polices the Blood-Hunters to make sure they do not cross the line with Humans. It is a horrible thing. I loathe this war between our races. However, I cannot and will not hurt her. I want to protect and love her always.” He kissed her hand again.
“What in the Hell are you talking about, man?” Shane uttered.Tabbruis hung his head in disgust. “I have no words to tell you how this angers me. To be with her is to be condemned by my race, the Blood-Hunters.” He looked at her with pure love in his eyes, “But it seems little price to pay to love her.”
She welled in tears. They fell across her checks as he swept them away.
Tabbruis grabbed her sparking hand and cupped it close to his heart.
“I knew you two were crazy for each other, but I had no idea.” Shane put his head in his hands. “I guess I believe you. But Man, this is a trip. In all the years I have known Char, she has never lied to me. I’m shocked. This is really out there.” He ran his hand over his half-shaven beard and sighed, “But nothing else can explain your blood loss and the way you are healed today, Tab.”

Shane is shocked!
What would you say if your best friend said they were a Supernatural?
I’m awed because Tabbruis and Charmeine know they can be put to death for loving each other.
Forbidden Love…

Pay it Forward Friday with Author Felipe Adan Lerma and his book, ONE NIGHT IN THE HILL COUNTRY!
Synopsisof
One Night in the Hill Country
By Felipe Adan Lerma
In One Night in the Hill Country, a suspense thriller, Sam (Samantha) takes four young cousins to the Texas Hill Country to search for a kitten, visit some vineyards, and enjoy a Saturday afternoon.
They encounter a mis-guided effort by brother and sister, Rolf and Tara, to use illegal immigrant children as bait to catch men who would abuse those children.
Cultures clash and mesh among the children, while the adults play for life and death.
Add note: While issues of abuse, immigration, and are integral to the story, emphasis is on trust and the meanings of family and friendship.
There is actually a nice alternation of action, suspense, humor, and tenderness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My thoughts about Samantha
by Author Felipe Adan Lerma
Sam is a complex character. Just the fact that she uses her shortened name is reflective of that. She can be casual, and she can much more.
Her Uncle, she tells the young cousins involved in the stories with her, raised her and her brother from a young age. And calling her Sam, was his affectionate coping way of raising a female child.
She hasn’t married, or had children, but there’s no indication in the stories that she’s adverse to that. In fact, the stories of her youth she tells the six young Texas cousins she’s befriended, after helping them solve a robbery, indicate she had typical infatuations and affections.
And of course, she goes out of her way to remain friends with the six children. Taking them places, telling them stories.
So I think she’s still very much revealing herself to me. Sometimes I wish I knew everything there was about her, but she just winks and goes about her business.
I’ve no doubt she will keep surprising me – and I try and capture some of that (smiles).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bio of Author Felipe Adan LermaI am a grandfather of five, dad of three, oldest of six, and have been married for 30+ years to a wonderful lady by the name of Sheila (smiles).
She and I are young seniors, and themes of family, the arts, and fitness, color nearly everything I write.
My reading interests for several years now, have veered toward mysteries, suspense, and thrillers. In my new novella, “One Night in the Hill Country,” I merge both my reading and creative interests.
In this particular work, as is my usual preference, much is suggested, without overt resort to graphic sex or violence. My wife says it’s my best work to-date. I hope you are able to give it a chance, and enjoy it also.

Silly…
The last thing you all want to read about is someone else’s personal silliness!However, some of you are like my family and at the very least… maybe friends?
So here goes folks…
~~~~~~~~
I can’t have sugar.Now, that is a given since most of you know I’ve lost 150 pounds last year.
It’s Holiday Time…
Great…
Wonderful…
Bah Humbug!
The following restrictions are making me want to pull my hair out by the roots:
I don’t have a lot of time for cooking! I work full-time for a Fortune 500 company by New York City, and I’m on the road at least 3 hours a day battling traffic. Let’s face it, I’m a fast cook. If I can’t have it ready in 20-30 minutes, I don’t fix it.I don’t have a lot of money to go buy tons of sugar-free desserts for everyone either.
I have several Holiday Parties to go to. Some hosts have said, “Oh, bring a sugar-free dessert, so we can all try.”
Huh…? Exsqueeze me? Baking Powder?(A quote from one of my all time fav movies, Wayne’s World)
Besides grabbing an apple or clementine from my fruit bowl, I’m stumped.
What is a sugar-free, tasty, cheap, and very simple dessert to make – like kid simple?Nothing!
I hate the internet at times because when I Google…
Darn if it brings up all sorts of yummy, fattening, and time-consuming recipes.
Grrr!
This is just silly, and a pet peeve, but it’s MY silliness and MY pet peeve.
Can we skip the Holidays and go right straight into spring?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I was kid,
I used to listen to the Eagles in my back yard Dogwood Tree
with a transistor radio in one hand and a book in the other.
Love this song!
Enjoy! Lots of love, Emily

With or without you . . . from ACCENDO, the 3rd book in The Light-Bearer Series by Emily Guido
“I am sorry, Charmeine, for so many things it is hard to express them all, but I am going to try.”He took a big breath, and looked in her eyes. “I am sorry for not supporting you. I am sorry for not believing in you. I am sorry for not having faith in you. I am sorrym Charmeine. If you let me show you, for the rest of my life until the end of time, I will never doubt you again.”
“Tabbruis, I can’t do this now.”
“Please let me finish.” He gently held her chin, looked into her eyes and declared, “Charmeine you are my life. You are my light. If you go back to Long Island…”
She walked to the terrace stone wall. “Tabbruis, it isn’t so easy putting Jack and Jill back together again. I really need to be alone.”“Look at me this time, Charmeine. I have to say my peace, and I will leave.” He stood beside her.
She turned and faced him with her hands defiantly across her chest and sighed.
“If you go back to Long Island, I will accept it, but let me go and be near you. Let me live close to you. I can buy any kind of house or apartment you wish for your own privacy. You do not need to see me, just let me be proximate to you, for you are the center of my Earth. God knows I cannot live without you. However, you will never have to lay your eyes on me. This is what I ask. Nevertheless, please forgive me, Charmeine. Forgive me enough to let me just be close to you. If you abandon me, I will not survive. Wherever you go, I will go with you. Whatever you want, I will give it to you.”He unfolded her arms and took her hands which sparked. He unclenched her fists and drew them up in front of them, palm to palm. Her sparks began to go up and down their bodies, enveloping them with light.
“Tabbruis, do you remember the first time this happened? You were trying to convince me not to leave and sacrifice myself to the Elder Council.”“Yes, I remember, my love.” He drew nearer to her. “I know you cannot lie to me. So answer me this, do you have the strength to be without me?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love the part where Tabbruis says that he just wants to be near Charmeine.
It brings a tear to my eye today.
So much love…
Enjoy the video, it’s another song that makes me shiver.
Amaranthine Series Synopsis:
Pulled into a world of darkness, Katelina’s fate becomes intertwined with that of Jorick, a dark, enigmatic vampire. To stay by his side, she must navigate intrigue, terror and bloodshed as they are drawn from one vampire war to another. Dreams of peace seem elusive, and complications abound in the form of mysterious vampires, old relics, and an ancient master. Join Katelina and Jorick in a world where vampires don’t sparkle and night is eternal.
“these books] are for adults… both the violence and the sex are not teenage stuff… and lurking behind the storyline is an adult theme.”
- Steve Evans, author of Demented
“A dark PNR with ‘let me catch my breath’ action, a dark and violent vampire world and the “be still my heart” vampire Jorick… Joleene is a gifted writer. Her tight and vivid prose is a joy to read and the dialogue and situations the characters deal with are full of emotion”
- Sharon S., reviewer for I Smell Sheep
A discussion with Jorick
Jorick: Greetings. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jorick and I’m a helpless victim in Joleene Naylor’s Amaranthine series. She’s been abusing me for six books (seven if you count her short story collection). How much can one vampire take before he snaps? How many times can I be irritated by an idiot, thwarted by some ridiculous twist or lose someone I love before it’s too much and I go over the edge?
That was a rhetorical question. *takes a deep breath* Worse, that author just left everything hanging at the end of the sixth book! She just cuts it off and – wham! We’re all left in a mess of emotional turmoil! Why would she do that?
*Jo cuts in.* I’m sorry if you object to the end of Children of Shadows, but I had to cut the story off or it would have gone for another three-hundred pages!
Jorick: You could have just given it a happy ending and left it there.
Jo: Happy ending? Please! You’d be bored senseless if I did that! You’re the one who can’t keep your nose out of things. Someone starts a war, and they make a muck up of it, and you run in and sort it out, all while grumbling that you have no choice.
Jorick: You’re the one who forces me into those situations, to “keep things interesting”. I’m not the one who scrolls through the manuscript and says, “Gee, it really needs some violence here. Who can we kill and how can we kill them?”
Jo: Of course not, because that would mean you were involved in the story, rather than just along for the ride.
Jorick: Ride? More like a nightmare trip from hell! And that redheaded idiot is the leader of the arch demons!
Jo: Are you talking about Verchiel? Arch demon is pretty harsh.
Jorick: You’re right, it’s too much for him. He’s more like a toe biting minion. If you have to keep torturing Katelina and I, the least you could do is kill the redheaded idiot. You want me to participate? I’ll set the scene for you. The sky is dark and strewn with diamond stars. The sandy beach stretches into the distance and the dark ocean rolls in and out, the waves playing a rhythmic night symphony. Suddenly, from the shadows leaps a furious vampire. His dark eyes blaze and his heroic muscles bulge as he leaps on his red-haired prey and knocks him to the ground. With a single swift motion he-
Jo: Whoa, wait a minute. First of all, we are NOT killing Verchiel. Second of all – Heroic muscles? If I wrote that I’d be laughed out of the book business.
Jorick: I’ve read your…work. Heroic muscles is an improvement. And why can’t we kill him? He serves no purpose except to irritate me, harass Katelina, and try to create the hint of a love triangle, which we clearly don’t need. Katelina and I are perfectly happy together and he is nothing more than in irritant!
Jo: And there’s the truth. You’re jealous! You’re afraid he’s going to get his triangle. Or that he’s going to turn her. Or link her. You know, I actually thought about that.
Jorick: WHAT?!
Jo: *shrugs* It was a passing thought. You’d be surprised how many interesting ideas I have that I don’t do anything with. Like a Katelina/Kateesha scene I abandoned. That’s really the hard part of being the author. Everything you write is canon. It’s not like some fanfic writer who can do outlandish things and then walk away, no harm done.
Jorick: Then why don’t you go write fanfic and leave us alone?
Jo: I’ve thought about it. Not leaving you alone, but writing my own fanfics. I could post them under a fake name and have all kinds of fun. Think of all the things we could do! I could kill you one by one and have no repercussions! I could send Katelina on a wild weekend with Micah-
Jorick: WHAT? Are you insane? She would never-
Jo: Hello! That’s the point of fan fiction. Never mind. I have too many things to do to listen to you complain. I just stopped in to say hello to Emily. I should also thank her for putting up with you.
Jorick: You should thank her for putting up with you and your inane idea of a guest post. This was really the best you could do?
Jo: *waves her magic writer’s wand* *Jorick disappears* Goodbye Jorick! Thanks for playing! As I was saying, thanks so much for having us over today. Sorry that Jorick complained so much, but you know how he is. He wouldn’t be happy if I stabbed him in the heart with a new stake!
BIO of Author Joleene Naylor:Joleene Naylor is the author of the glitter-less Amaranthine series, a world where vampires aren’t for children. As a compliment to the novel series, she has also written several short stories, including the Vampire Morsels collection, and has plans for an Amaranthine Encyclopedia.
In her spare time, Joleene is a freelance book cover designer and for-fun photographer. She maintains several blogs full of odd ramblings, and occasionally updates her website at JoleeneNaylor.com. She and her husband live in Villisca, Iowa near the famous – and reportedly haunted – “axe murder” house. Though she enjoys the paranormal, she refuses to invite the ghosts for a visit. Between the cats, dogs, and turtles, her house is full enough.
