Coworking Month – Hoe ga je nieuwe samenwerkingen aan in het buitenland?

Waar gaat deze workshop over?

VOLT bestaat uit een groot team van vrijwilligers in 28 landen. Hoe zorg je in deze samenstelling ervoor dat iedereen gemotiveerd blijft? De kracht van vrijwilligers zit in de organisatie. De expertise van een persoon moet je op de juiste manier inzetten. Maar hoe kom je hier achter? Hoe zorg je er voor dat zij voldoening halen uit wat ze doen? En hoe zorg je voor inspiratie? Niet alleen voor vrijwilligers is dit belangrijk, maar ook voor jouw werknemers. Daar heeft VOLT zijn eigen methode voor, waar zij op 25 november meer over vertellen! Laurens verteld over verschillende tools en handvatten die zij inzetten om te blijven inspireren en activeren. Dat niet alleen, Laurens vertelt ook over hoe je nieuwe samenwerkingen aan kunt gaan in het buitenland. Maak jij al muziek van je leven?

Prachtige nummers vol emotie van Adele, een top symfonie orkest, ACDC die een festivalterrein plat speelt, DJ Hardwell die een hele menigte aan het dansen krijgt, Ilse de Lange die keer op keer prachtige countryliedjes maakt of Duncan Laurence die heel Europa kippenvel geeft en wint.


En jouw leven vol geluk en plezier.


Wat hebben die twee met elkaar te maken?


De weg naar een gelukkig leven is net zoiets als muziek maken. Hoezo dan? Nou ik zie drie elementen die terugkomen in beide:



De basis
De onderdelen
Het extra’s

Een orkest kan nog zo’n professionele hoog afgestudeerde dirigent hebben die al de hele wereld over heeft gedirigeerd aan orkesten, als hij alleen maar met zijn stokje zwaait gebeurt er niks. Hij moet er diepgang en emotie in leggen, en écht communiceren met zijn orkestleden.


Rock en roll tot leven


ACDC weet de akkoorden die vaak worden gespeeld in rock, maar ze moeten met die standaardakkoorden ook mee spelen (letterlijk en figuurlijk), de zelfbedachte songteksten én hun excentrieke persoonlijkheden en energie zo combineren dat het energiek overkomt op het podium. Ze moeten op het podium echt als een team overkomen, en hun best doen om ervoor zorgen dat ze die synergie ook uitstralen.


Verdriet en diepgang


Adele kan nog zo verdrietig zijn over wat haar is overkomen in het leven (Google maar), als ze die energie niet oppakt en verwerkt in een songtekst, komt haar geniale muzikaliteit en tophits niet naar buiten.

Ze kan dan de meest poëtische teksten schrijven, maar als ze er geen emotie in legt tijdens het zingen van deze woorden, is het geen muzikaal succes.


Magie uit dj-paneel


DJ Hardwell kan de meest geavanceerde dj-apparatuur bezitten, top apparatuur uit de dj-wereld die duizenden euro’s kosten. Als hij er zijn creativiteit niet in legt, en de juist beats niet weet te mixen tot een geheel, zal het publiek niet dansen en zijn nummers de top niet halen.


Prachtige liefdessongs die je raken


Dit geldt ook voor Ilse de Lange. Als zij zich niet inleeft in bepaalde situaties van het leven, worden haar countrysongs zonder bezieling gezongen. In een interview vertelde ze, dat ze geen allerdiepste dalen heeft meegemaakt, in ieder geval niet in de liefde. Ze heeft al heel lang achter elkaar een trouwe fijne vriend die  haar altijd steunt.

Geen drama zou je denken, waarmee een artiest tot inspiratie komt tot diepzinnige teksten. En toch weet ze prachtige liefdesnummers te maken. Ze weet zich zo in te leven, daar doet ze haar best voor, dat de emotie toch overkomt in haar muziek.


Duncan leeft zijn droom


Duncan Laurence is een prachtig voorbeeld van dromen bereiken door jezelf te zijn en al je talenten te gebruiken. Zijn ‘onderdelen’ zijn: natuurlijke zangtalent, muzikale kwaliteiten, zijn Brabantse nuchtere instelling, maar ook zijn doorzettingsvermogen, geloof in zichzelf en het 200% inlevingsvermogen. Hij heeft met deze eigenschappen iets extra’s gedáán: hij heeft alle onderdelen bij elkaar gepakt, de emotie in de muziek gelegd, de overtuigingskracht om te winnen, zijn ziel en zaligheid en zijn 200% inlevingsvermogen in zijn song, heeft hij toegevoegd.


Alles bij elkaar, 1, 2 en 3 zorgde voor hem voor een gelukkig leven. Waarin hij kan doen wat hij het allerliefste wilt, zingen, en er ook nog eens succes mee behalen.


Vergelijk dit met jouw leven:


1. Jouw basis en 2. Jouw onderdelen

Jij bent een uniek persoon, daar bestaat er maar eentje van in de wereld (de basis).

Aangevuld met: jouw natuurlijke talenten, je genoten onderwijs, opleidingen, cursussen, vaardigheden uit je vrije tijd: hobby’s, sport, muziek, tekenen wat dan ook, je soft skills die je ontwikkeld hebt, je opvoeding, de situaties die je hebt meegemaakt in je leven die jou hebben gevormd tot wie je bent, je omgeving, je normen en waarden. (de onderdelen).


3. En dan het extra’s:

Als jij er niks mee doet, zijn het losse onderdelen die niks waarmaken. Al die studies, maar ook vooral jouw natuurlijke talenten en al het andere bovengenoemde zijn super waardevol als geheel. Jij kan iets wat een ander niet kan. Juíst door de combinatie van bovengenoemde zaken die je mee hebt gemaakt.

Als jij dat laat voor wat het is, er niks mee doet, en achter de balie gaat zitten op een saai kantoor waar je papieren gaat schuiven, ben je nog zo’n fantastisch geheel.


Maar dat komt er niet uit. Want je doet er niks mee.


DUS.


Die extra factor: de emotie in de muziek leggen, iets dóen met al jouw unieke talenten en andere factoren die jou jou maken: dát is zo belangrijk. Dan gaat het hele geheel leven: zowel een muziekstuk als ook jouw leven.


Veel mensen blijven maar zitten waar ze zitten, omdat dat comfortabel is. Terwijl, wanneer je muziek maakt van jou leven, er echt wonderlijke dingen gaan gebeuren. Je haalt eruit wat er in zit. Je werk en hobby’s doe je, omdat je ze energie geven, omdat jij plezier erin hebt én omdat ze je voldoening geven.


Je krijgt veel meer plezier en geluk in het leven. Je bent echt jezelf, en doet precies al die dingen waar jij goed in bent, en speciaal voor jou bedoeld zijn, omdat dat het beste past bij wie jij bent geworden. Vanuit jouw basis en jouw unieke onderdelen.


En dat zorgt voor een prachtige symfonie.

Dreams of Being Your Own Boss? Check Out the Possibilities

If you are longing for the life of a solopreneur or freelancer, you have lots of company. In the U.S. alone, it is now reported that 57 million adults are in self-employed jobs, either full or part-time. This shift in the workplace is a result of many factors, not the least of which are technology and the changing values of millennials and Gen Z’ers. Before you decide that this is your new life, consider some of the pros and cons. Among the pros are the following:



You are completely in charge of your life – both professional and personal – and can choose when, where, and how you work
In many gig economy positions, you can work from a variety of locations.
You can choose who you work with and the clients you take on
You keep the profits of your labors (except for taxes, etc., of course)

But there are cons too:



Income is not steady and predictable
You’re in charge of marketing and sales
You lose employer benefits (health insurance, savings plans, etc.)
You must chase clients who fail or are slow to pay
You may find that you are working longer hours than in a traditional job

The Most Lucrative Self-Employed Jobs

As you might have already guessed, these positions are technology-related. If you have skills that match any of the following, you can almost name your price.


Data Scientist:

This is a relatively new field of computer science and involves the collection of unstructured data from all over the web, categorizing and analyzing that data to answer business questions and drive the decisions that businesses make for their future. Earnings for data scientists can range from $125,000 – $250,000.


Software App Developer:

Everyone from individuals to large enterprises want apps for everything from games to convenience for users/customers. If you have not been encouraged to “download the app” from many companies, then you are not living in the 21st century. App developers can realize income ranging from $50,000 – $130,000, depending upon the specific training you have.


Cybersecurity Specialist:

Given the number of high-profile security breaches of late, companies are in desperate need of security specialist with the latest skills. In fact, there is a shortage in this area with a huge number of unfulfilled positions. Companies that cannot find hires in this field will be happy to use freelancers with the right credentials and background. As a beginner, you can command up to $140,000 but much more as you advance in your career.


IT Auditor:

This position involves going into a client’s workplace and analyzing all of its IT functions – hardware and software – and making recommendations for changes/improvements. Most companies employ an outside consultant to conduct these audits on a scheduled basis, so if you get “in” with a number of clients, you have long-term recurring income potential. As a beginner, you may bring in about $50,000 a year, but this will grow as your reputation does.


The Most In-Demand Self-Employed Jobs

So, high-tech gigs probably command the greatest income potential. But suppose you are not a techie? What’s left for you? A lot actually. And many are in high demand:


Social Media/Content Creation and Management:

Coca-Cola has a huge department of writers and editors for its digital marketing efforts. Small to mid-sized companies cannot afford such a luxury and outsource these tasks to talented writers and journalists. If you are a creative who can craft compelling copy and great graphics, you can grow a solopreneur business over time. It’s a matter of gaining a reputation. You can begin by finding work on any number of job boards, as you build your reputation. These self-employed jobs can result in earnings from $25,000 into six-figures. 


Virtual Assistant (VA):

Startup entrepreneurs are busy focusing on their core tasks. This job can be compared to a brick and mortar administrative assistant, but working completely online. Tasks can include anything from bookkeeping, data entry, managing calendars and schedules, fielding calls and emails, and more. If you see yourself as someone who can stay organized and perform multiple tasks for multiple clients, you can earn a solid income. There are some VA’s who earn six-figures.


Teaching and Tutoring:

The beauty of this freelancing opportunity is that it can be accomplished physically or virtually or in combination. The explosion of K-12 online school programs has created a huge demand for virtual teachers; students who are struggling with their coursework need tutoring help. Basic starting income runs about $25/hour but rates are higher for those with expertise in STEM subjects. 


Email Marketing:

If you have a penchant for writing engaging copy and a solid understanding of the technical aspects of email marketing, managing those campaigns for small and mid-sized companies can be lucrative. You will need more than just writing skills – you must track, analyze and report the success of each campaign. The greater the success, the more your reputation grows. Income obviously depends on a client’s budget and the number of clients you can handle at one time.


Over-Saturated Self-Employed Jobs 

It’s all in the law of supply and demand. There are some gig positions in which the supply is just too great, and only the “cream of the crop” will command a decent income. If you are in one of these fields, understand that to rise to the top you will have to be amazing:


Web Designers:

This has been a hot field for many years. But today, there are just so many designers out there, the competition is tough. If you intend to make it in this field, you will have to commit to lots of continuous learning regarding the latest technical advances as well as a strong and successful self-promoter


Bloggers:

Whether you are looking to create blogs for clients or establish your own blog with income-producing facets, you face stiff competition. If you can find a topic niche that is not heavily covered, you may have a shot at monetizing your blog. You will have to match your expertise with a niche topic and, even then, it’s a lot of work for a lot of risks. Some highly popular bloggers make six-figure incomes, but they have been at it for a long time and got in early.


Attorney:

Many law schools graduates dream of “hanging up their shingles” and practicing as solopreneurs. But this field is probably one of the most saturated professions. Plenty of lawyers end up in non-related careers because they are unable to find enough clients or even get hired by existing law firms.


Freelance Writing:

Yes, this was listed above a field in which there is high demand. However, it is saturated with hopefuls who have writing skills but who must compete with huge numbers of fellow writers, all competing for the same gigs. The end result is that, unless you have built a great reputation and have long-term gigs with repeating clients, you may end up working for very little. Consider that some writers are working for as little as $0.03 per word. That’s a lot of words to add up to a livable income.


How About the Easiest Self-employed Jobs to Pursue?

The easiest freelance gigs to pursue, unfortunately, are also often the least well-paid. If you are earning a second household income, you may want to consider these types of freelancing. Understand that you will not be earning a living wage, but supplementing the major household income source.



Online surveys: this is one of the easiest things to do. Just sign up with several survey websites and you will get paid for every survey you take.
Home Data Entry: Many companies do hire data entry clerks to work from home. After all, they don’t have to pay their share of social security or provide any benefits. The hourly wage often results in about $10/hour, if you are lucky.
Customer Support/Assistance: lots of companies hire remote workers to handle normal and mostly mundane customer service issues and questions. To do this work, you obviously must have some training, most of which is completed online. Again, this is not a gig for a primary income.
Child Care: While this is often listed as an easy gig, it is, in fact, not. You will have to complete certification training via your state agency, and there are regs that set a number of children you can care for, as well as the physical setup you must have.
Dog/House Sitting: This is definitely an easy gig – you sell yourself as a responsible person who can take on responsibilities for home and pets while owners are away. Be aware that most of these positions are taken up by college students and do not pay particularly well. 

Out-of-the-Box Self-Employed Jobs

While these may not be all that unusual, they are often not thought of when people consider self-employment. And yet, they can be quite lucrative.


Voice-Over Artist:

If you have the talent to vary your tone of voice or use a variety of accents; if you have a compelling voice; or if you are just able to speak clearly and succinctly, you may have a solopreneur career waiting. Companies employ voice-over artists for a variety of tasks when they create videos. Average pay runs about $40/hour. If you can get enough gigs, this is not too bad.


Video-Game Tester:

This is a great gig if you love gaming, but don’t plan on this your only source of income. Generally, testers have other gigs as well. Beginning tests can perhaps earn about $18,000/year. Highly experienced and in-demand testers can make up to $45,000, but only after years of work.


Party/Event Planner:

There are plenty of people who go into this line of self-employment, but they must be patient, learn how to self-market, and rely on recommendations and references to grow their businesses. Average pay is about $25/hour but gradually increases as a worker “earns her stripes.” Not to sound chauvinistic, but this is a highly female-dominated field, and many women use the income as supplementary to the primary household income.


Personal Shopper:

This has been a popular and in-demand gig, until recently. Unfortunately, now that grocery stores deliver and online shopping is so easy, a large pool of clients have dried up. Still, those who manage to get enough gigs in this field can probably command an annual salary in the low 30K’s.


Entertainers:

Stand-up comedians, magicians, clowns, and musicians have a tough “row to hoe” if they plan to make a solid income. Promoting oneself is a tough task, and, again, the increase in numbers of gigs often relies on references and recommendations. Most of these self-employed individuals do this on a part-time basis, keeping their day jobs in the hopes that they will build their businesses over time. Those who are successful can realize an income up to the mid- $40K range.

“Startups Don’t Die, They Commit Suicide”

This is a quote from TechCrunch author implies that startup failure is not a consequence of accidental misfortunes – but instead a result of actions and decisions of the startup team. In hindsight, it often seems like you should’ve known all along that you were leading your company to an inevitable doom – however, you doesn’t usually seem the same way in the moment.


Startups are known to be highly uncertain endeavours. Does it mean that we are doomed to make mistakes time after time which destroy our business without realizing it at the time and retrospectively scratching our heads not understanding how we could’ve been so silly?


Not necessarily. As unique and special each startup is, the errors startup founders make tend to be surprisingly uniform on many occasions. Some of them happened to us too. We will review three of the most common of them for you so you don’t unintentionally kill your start-up while its still very much breathing.


1. Failure to Conduct a Proper Customer Research

If you think that your product or service is so great that everyone would loooove to have it than you probably haven’t heard too much of the customer research. Even the greatest of products need to discover their niche first – find out whose needs and pain it responds to the most. And it’s not just “male, 16-20 years old, in the Netherlands”. In order for your product to be loved, you have to understand your consumers and who you’re making it for. What’s their background? How do they spend their free time? What kind of personalities they have? What’s their spending habits? Researching these and many other questions about your consumers take time and a certain degree of detective (stalking?) skills, which is more complicated than just tweaking a few parameters in Facebook Ad settings. However, doing that would allow you to stand out from competition and hit right into the hearts of your customers.


2. Not Testing Your Idea First

We all sometimes get carried away with our ideas. Sometimes, we fall in love with the idea of something so much that we don’t see reality. While this could cause a heartbreak in your private life, in case of your business the circumstances can be even more dire. Even the most brilliant idea will inevitably fail if it is only brilliant in your mind. The most important piece of advice here is to test your idea first before proceeding further. There are many ways to do that which provide you with highly quantifiable results. For example, you can create a simple landing page which shows your product, set up ads on Fb or Google which create traffic to the Order page and then you can measure how many people clicked on “Order” button. It’s always best to spend one thousand on a test instead of spending many more on developing a product that nobody wants.


3. Issues Within Your Team 

When launching a new project, it’s great to start with enthusiasm and belief that there is a great future ahead of you. Without unrealistic optimist most of the projects most projects would’ve probably never got launched in the first place, discouraged by the hard numbers of statistics. However, there are some aspects where it immeasurably helps to keep a cool head while planning your future startup. That particularly concerns a relationship with your fellow team members. Startup founders are the ones who want to do things differently and not to be bureaucratic as traditional organisation, however this is a part where you want to have things in order. The reason for this is very simple. If you switched to a remote form of work, no one is watching what you are doing at a particular moment, and the work is still not done – you will simply be fired. And if you do not want to be fired, you will have to work and work on time. This is discipline.

It is unrealistic to work remotely without excellent time management skills. We have already said that the temptation to postpone work is always present, and it is much harder to deal with this at home. If in the office you can only chat with colleagues, go out for a smoke break or check messages on the phone, then at home, you can still turn on the TV, walk with the dog, pet the cat … And a million other options for what you can do at home rather than work.


When a remote worker should follow the office schedule staying at home, he or she has no choice except for being at the workplace. But when it is possible to plan your tasks independently (for example, if you are a freelancer), it becomes more difficult.
