A-synchrone wederkerigheid
Laat me weten!
De enige factor die me soms beperkt is tijd. Misschien dat jij me daarin kan helpen? Meer doen in minder tijd?
Tot geefs!

A Seats2meet location als an ExO (Exponential Organisation)
When I started to prepare my strategy for 2016, last december, I used the model of Yuri van Geest and Salim Ismail known of the Singularity University. This model is explained in their book ‘Exponential Organizations’, business book of the year 2014, in which they explain why new organizations are ten times better, faster, and cheaper than yours. A book that I find to be very useful in developing my strategy, since they explain in their book about their research into startups and why they succeed or fail. Turns out there are several factors that indicate a startup is going to succeed. So all the more reason for me to check if I have these factors covered.
MTP
At first they say a startup has to have a so called MTP: a massive transformative purpose. You can compare a MTP with the Why of Simon Sinek (The golden circle) and the value proposition of the Business Model Canvas. For Peer!, my Seats2meet location, that is building on a new economy. Building a mesh, a network of companies and communities that create value to one another with new business models, fair and sustainable trade. (why) We facilitate business meetings in the new economy (what), which makes this happen.
The model
Yuri and Salim present their model with a picture of a brain with a left and right brain: the left part stands for order, control and stability and the right part for creativity, growth and uncertainty. With both parts they have five factors that need to be covered, will your startup be a success. I will share with you my analysis of my location with you on every one of these factors.
Staff on demand
Besides my business partner and I, I do not have any employees. However, there are working approximately 20 persons for us. So we have a 100% flexible workforce. The people that are working for us pay with social capital for what we give them: a free workspace, a network, a place where they can meet and develop themselves. We have a facilitator that leads meetings an workshops, a twitter reporter that makes a twitter report of a meeting and hosts that receive guests and introduce them to our community and our ways. They do not just tell where the coffee and the toilets are, but especially how we work with social and monetary capital and how they can tap into the collective knowledge of Seats2meet. We even have an IT-project manager, an office manager and an event manager. In all the cases the exchange of value must feel good: what we give and what we receive must be in balance.
Community and crowd
We spend a lot of time in building our community. We do that on the location as well as online. To improve the interaction online, the members of the community also blog on our website and we share this on our social media. The authors share it also, which gives us more visibility. On the location we organize events and every day we lunch together and ask people to help each other: do they have a question about software, social media or about a possible client? There is always another community member that has the answer. Also the contributing to the community with labor and subgroups on a theme that find project together add value to the community. We have two groups now: Innovation and Events&promotion. They are a collaboration of freelancers that present themselves as a network within the mesh.
Algorithms
As I am no It-specialist, an certainly have no knowledge of data science or algorithms, I am very happy that Seats2meet International helps me out on this one. They put all their effort in increasing the value we can offer to our clients with software for meeting and exchanging knowledge. The software for meeting the relevant people was already available for the workspaces, but the software for the meeting spaces is now developing and it looks great! I have used it during a meeting with 50 guests lately and I could share my experience with the developers, so that they can use it to continue building.
Leveraged Assets
In this factor for me the main goal is to have access, not ownership. Ownership means maintenance, administration, etc. So I can tell you I have no fixed costs but the service costs of the owner of the building where our location is and the subscription on the coffee(machine). We order catering if a client orders with us, so that are variable costs. We have no outstanding loan. The rent we have is a profit-related rent. This means that after we paid our costs (like catering, cleaning, coffee and so forth) we share the profit with the owner of the building. What also is a new business model, is that we have just half of a floor (the workspace and coffee corner) as a steady, continuous factor. For the meeting spaces we use the not rented offices in the building. There we put a conference table, chairs, art and a whiteboard. When the room is rented, we move the interior to another free space in the building.
Engagement
The engagement is visible: on the website you can see the reviews of our customers. We are open for social deals: we can organize an event of workshop together with a trainer or company and share the profits or we can give a discount on the monetary capital if there is an extra exchange of value. For example if the company or person does something for the community, therefore for Peer!. The things we do to build the community also contribute to the engagement of the people that work at our location.
Interfaces
I already mentioned the software for meeting and exchanging knowledge, so that’s covered. Off course Mirjam and I are also interfaces, we do manually what the software does: we always get to know a client and what he does, so we can make connections and give tips to them who to contact. The Seats2meet-software also provides us an interface for the clients to book their meeting spaces online and it translates to our internal processes, like invoicing, administration and CRM.
Dashboards
The Seats2meet-software provides us with a dashboard on profits per month/year/day and makes yield management possible. For my navigation, I use a simple excel-sheet for the organization goals and activities. For sales I use the free tool Hubspot, in which I can put all the contact that are not a client (yet) and monitor my Sales Funnel.
Experimentation
We are doing several experiments: professionalizing our workshops and trainings to Peer Academy, building on an art community Spaces4art, constantly experimenting with social deals and creating extra value for the community.
Autonomy
Here Yuri and Salim mean self-organized multidisciplinary teams that act under a decentralized authority. Well, we have a network structure and the people that work with us, are a member of teams. Every team has his own task and can decide and work together to finish these tasks. Because we have our location for only one year, I participate in a lot of these teams, so decisions can be made quickly. If I am not there, the host of the day makes the decisions.
Social
If you have read about the community building and engagement, you probably know that we are also social. We use the Seats2meet-software for making relevant meetings possible, keep in touch with our community online through social media and ask them to contribute actively to the content of our social media. We also have room for people with a distance to the labor market. They work with us with what they can do. They grow into a new profile of skills, when they want a job switch or re-integrate. Everything is possible, what is most important is the agreement we make: what is the exchange of value and for how many hours, which tasks, etc. That is the deal and if it takes the person to do it in a week or one day, doesn’t matter. It is important that they contribute to the community and feel they have a useful day filling. The freelancers, companies and people that re-integrate are all working together and there is no difference of rank. They are all members of the community and the network of Peer!.

Win-win-win!”

Global Meetup Day 2: Music, food and home away from home
The second I got in the room called Platform 1, located in the Utrecht Seats2meet location, the first thought was: I like this song. I don’t remember what it was, but the thought kept on through the day.
On the second day of the global meetup we had what , writer of the book Appreciative Inquires: of the 3.0 kind, calls an unconference. The concept isn’t new. An unconference is when instead of having keynote speakers on a stage everyone has its chance to speak out and the choice when what they want to work on. Might sound a little bit chaotic, and it is.
The word might not be new, but was definitely a new experience for me. We started from the micro, 1-0-1 interviews, to macro as collective dreaming and groups pitching their ideas that can eventually become into actions. All of those steps were measured in an ingenious way: music. The result was brilliant ideas and an information overload. All orchestrated by Cees as a facilitator.

On the end of the day was time to give our guests the stage. On a round of 4 different workshops: Teamily with , Bitnation with , S2M Carrousel w/ Permanent Future Lab given by and Create the life that suits you best with .
To end the day with style we had an amazing dinner made by Mama’s Koelkast. Long story short they are moms from all over the world, Suriname, Morocco, you name it. I can say for myself that as a foreigner it felt like home.

Ten visionaries, one future – Grace Sai
About a month ago, the CUAsia event on Bali was a big success. As S2M was one of the partners of the event, we took the opportunity to interview some real inspiring keynote speakers. Today in our series ‘Ten visionaries, one future’, you will find the interview I did with the .
Grace is the CEO and Co-Founder of The Hub Singapore, Singapore’s largest co-working community of entrepreneurs, creatives and techies. She is regarded as the node of entrepreneurship ecosystem in Asia and speaks widely on that topic. Interested in ecosystem building and policy development for startups and social enterprises, she has been invited by the Prime Minister’s Offices in Singapore and Malaysia, Angela Merkel, Mayor Park, amongst others; to share her inputs. She also sits on the Advisory Board for Ben & Jerry’s Singapore, an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at INSEAD and a TEDx Singapore speaker. She was also the founder of Books for Hope, a social enterprise in children’s education in Indonesia. Grace has been nominated as a Young Global Leader, World Economic Forum (2013), 40 Under 40 by Prestige Singapore (2014) and is a UN Women Entrepreneurship Day Ambassador. She now resides in Singapore and has an MBA from University of Oxford, where she graduated with Distinction and was a Skoll Scholar (funded by Jeff Skoll, the co-founder of eBay).
What does the term ‘coworking’ mean to you specifically?
I think co-working is a mindset. It’s not even a skill set. It’s a mindset of a level of collaboration that has never happened before in the now capitalistic society. I do believe that co-working has existed in societies in the past, when people really helped each other to survive almost. I love the Dutch concept of ‘gezellig’; that to me is co-working! It’s a sense a belonging, it’s about community. It’s about belonging to a tribe that understands you and shares the same values, giving you a very profound dope of courage to pursue your own ideals for the world. I fundamentally believe that the big guys out there do not have the solutions for a better world. I think leaders in the past were more noble, more altruistic, than the leaders today. And so the problem with the world is now that everyone is used to the big guys having the solutions, but that’s not true. They have the power, but that doesn’t mean they have the right intentions. I think the power is with the many, so how do you organize the many into environments where they are productive and courageous enough to pursue the solutions? Perhaps that is how society should be organized.
How would you describe the development of co-working in Asia?
Growth is happening. We were probably the 3rd co-working space in Singapore four years ago, now there are 60. I think it is a growing pie, so there is no real competition between operators yet, but one can expect the market to be more segmented, discerning and sophisticated.
How does this development relate to the rest of the world?
I can’t say the same about NYC and London; those cities are more saturated and there are dominant players already. Here in Asia there is no dominant player yet. Each co-working space stands for something different. For The Hub Singapore, we are about community and collaboration. The emerging market of 650 million in population in Southeast Asia also provides an exciting opportunity for the way we are restructuring work and society. There’s lots of opportunities to make an impact in a developing part of the world!
What do you think is the biggest challenge for the co-working movement worldwide?
The biggest challenge is that the people who start co-working spaces are nice people, not business people. Idealistic, passionate people, who want to serve other people. And if you do that without business acumen and a cashflow projection, than you are bound to get tired of just giving and not seeing the feedback or reward of your work . And you also run the risk of closing down because of the bigger peers coming in and offering better spaces and cheaper prices as well. Globally, only 30% of the coworking spaces are profitable. A lot of us here who are giving classes at CUAsia have done a lot of these mistakes and have come out alive to share those battle scars. Also, if you love building community, starting a co-working space is not the only to way to build community. There are many other ways that are less expensive and less risky. Like Seats2meet! It is a way of building community without having real estate risks!
What is the importance for people of being part of bigger collective?
Because there is an inherent need for humans to connect. To belong to this thing called humanity. Especially for people that want to create change and come up with innovative and disruptive ideas. I really believe that. Like Margaret Mead, the famous philosopher, said: “Never doubt that a small of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” For movements, whether it is female emancipation or anti-slavery or the LGBT rights movement, it all started first with a small group of passionate people who were pioneers. And I believe that what we are doing is really aggregating a group of pioneers, who are restructuring the definition of success. the structures of business society, technology. So this whole idea of business for society, technology for society, spaces for society is the kind of the people we are serving and attracting. And because it’s pioneering work it is lonely and so to take away the loneliness you need to know you are not alone. Because the movement is exploding. So it’s psychologically relaxing and encouraging to know you are part of a bigger goal. And you know, the best people and leaders I know dedicate their lives to a bigger goal.
If you had to pick one favorite place to work in this world, where would it be and why?
Amsterdam! I think The Netherlands have a truly egalitarian society, where there is real gender and power balance. It has a flat power structure. I appreciate that a lot. I think it is a very enlightened form of society. I think the concept of ‘gezellig’ is amazing. I have never seen a national culture that is so consistent as I have seen in The Netherlands. And Amsterdam is beautiful with the houses by the canals. It’s a very liberal and free thinking society. So yes, Amsterdam!

S2M Global Meetup 2016 – Let’s keep on building Society 3.0 together!
What an amazing experience it was, the S2M Global Meetup 2016! We kicked off on Sunday night with our group of international guests in a bar, to welcome them in The Netherlands. Most of their faces were familiar to me already as we talked on Skype before about what the S2M ecosystem can do for them and what they can contribute to the S2M community. But of course technology will never replace the pureness of being in touch in real life.
Mariëlle Sijgers picked up the mic on Monday morning to introduce all 14 nationalities within the group on stage. People coming from different cultures, with different backgrounds, different ages but all united by one thing: the ambition to create another type of world together. A better world, another lifestyle, other ways of work. Building communities, facilitating the basic need of people to connect. And triggered by the S2M concept of course, their main reason to attend the S2M Global Meetup in the first place! In a short, hilarious story about his life as a digital nomad, S2M Ambassador Mike LaRosa from the US immediately underlined the importance of accelerating serendipity.
Sketching the context for us all from his role as a trend strategist, Ronald van den Hoff then took us on a fascinating journey through the world that is changing so rapidly because of current technologies. The world he gave the working title ‘Society 3.0’. Lenneke van Rossum and Vincent Ariëns elaborated a bit more on what this means in daily practice using the S2M software. In the afternoon ‘experience’ was the magic word! The hosts of the S2M locations in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Amersfoort did a great job in organizing visits to other types of S2M locations, organizing S2M Safari’s (brainstorms), inspiring talks by people from the community, boat and train rides, climbing towers, and excellent dinners.
After sleeping in, the stage was for Cees Hoogendijk on Tuesday morning, doing a mini Appreciative Inquiry session with us all. Great tool to use for community building, one of the main aspects of co-working in any way. Interviewing each other, really connecting, listening to the other person and retelling his or her story. Trying to find the common denominators to come up with one shared dream as a team. Not easy, but a great challenge! Interesting workshops on teambuilding, bitnation, happiness, artificial intelligence and S2M were scheduled late afternoon. One of the highlights definitely was the dinner that evening cooked by the mama’s of Mama’s Koelkast (Mama’s Refrigerator). From Italian to Chinese to Surinam, which went pleasantly well by the way with the extraordinary gin-tonics of Marloes den Engel from De Gintonnerie.
Not having a program is the best thing sometimes, which was proven on Wednesday morning, when we sat down in a small circle to discuss how to make the S2M ecosystem even stronger worldwide. It was wonderful to see that over the previous days, enough trust was build up already within this group to have a real open discussion with great, concrete outcomes. Miroslav Mijatov, S2M Ambassador from Serbia, concluded the morning by saying that he was very thankful for the opportunity, that S2M030 was the best example of a co-working environment he had ever experienced and that he would always be a S2M ‘soldier’. Amen :). Let’s keep on building Society 3.0, together!

Seats2meet Global Meetup Day 1: Where are we running?
Monday was the first day of the Seats2meet global meetup. More than 50 people from all corners of the world got gathered to experience the Seats2meet concept on ground 0, Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Even though most people got here one day before the first event you couldn’t tell that everyone came from all different time zones. You could feel the curiosity and vibration.
After a nice Sunday night with drinks and food in a bar in the center of Utrecht Monday started like it should: with coffee. One hour of just talking and getting to know everyone present. All different kinds of backgrounds, experiences and goals getting together to be just one thing: curious.
, cofounder of seats2meet.com and writer of the book Society 3.0, was the first keynote speaker. From Society 1.0 (industrialized institutions), to Society 2.0 (internet came and we started interacting with institutions) to finally Society 3.0 (experience, knowledge, social capital and access are more significant – no institutions) we change. Of course I am speaking in a very very very simple way, but if you want to know more about it read the book for free.
Following him we learned new seats2meet.com features from and . I can’t say a lot now but I do think it has potential to deconstruct borders. But I will talk about it later.
With the energy of the “new” flowing we split up in groups. Some went to Eindhoven and Den Boss, others to Amersfoort, some stayed in Utrecht and the rest (including me) went to Amsterdam.
Our first stop was Amsterdam Connected for one of the first Seats2meet Safari. In the majestic location that aims to be an ecosystem for the creative and big minds of society 3.0 members, we got ourselves a tour from the host and cofounder itself, and had the chance to talk and exchange ideas with the main person behind it, . With Brazilians’, Americans’ and Serbians’ eyes the picture enlarges, adapt and develop.
That is the magic of a global meetup. You have new eyes and as , a coworking space owner from Serbia, cleverly said, we have fresh ears as well. Another interesting insight from , the entrepreneur responsible for bringing seats2meet to Brazil. He said we, in seats2meet, we are all sort of refugees. We are running from the modus operandi of a society that is in collapse. We may be still running, but we definitely found a way to the promise land, not a geography one, but more a state of mind.
