The school that is taking over the world

We heard and spoken the word “change” several time in the last years. Change is coming for everyone, you, me, everyone. Another thing that is clearly going through a much needed change is education and school.

Solonia and Grace, two kick-ass women base in Singapore, funded the change school. They look into teaching in a holistic way how to follow up on all the change going around you and get benefits from it, instead of drowning.

They have 3 different types of programs; learning retreats, that always happen in different countries of the world, team programs aiming companies and organisations and the gym, where you take short courses.

Coworking, the movement

What I think about coworking is that it’s a movement. A movement of people: freelancers, professionals, entrepreneurs, flex workers, all professionals who want to work, but on their own conditions. Not because someone else tells them how to work. We call them coworkers, because they love to be in company with other people they haven’t met yet. When they meet each other and start to share their thoughts it might be very relevant for both of them. That’s the added value of meeting new people, you become in the end a better professional or even a better human being.

This movement doesn’t fit in the structures we’ve created during the industrial era, which are still our structures now. This brings chaos into the system, but I would like to see it as a change. This movement forces us to break through the old structures and create new ones. Little note, it doesn’t mean the old structures were bad from the beginning. No it served us very well, those choises we’ve made then were probably the good ones in that time. But it’s time to move on and develop new structures with each other to become a new society. One that serves us all. That’s the reason that I want to invite people to connect to that movement, connect, collaborate and grow with each other. The more people the better, and in the end it will be the whole society.

But how do you do that?

Do you have or know a location with potential to connect to the movement? Maybe a café, an office, libraries, universities, anywhere people gather. Do you have in that location place left where people can come and sit, work, meet, connect, etc? Use that abundance in a good way and share it with coworkers. The only condition you have, is that they have to be open to meet you and other people and share knowledge to help each other out. Then the magic will happen, because you enrich your organisation with a lot of Social Capital, in consequence also enriches the monetary capital. Don’t know how? This research of the Erasmus University (Rotterdam) shows you the outcome of acting in a eco system where Social Capital is used as an economic value. In this way your old business model has now a new revenue stream.

Want all these advantages? I challenge you to connect to the coworking movement, but be aware, the strenght of this movement is the openess. You can’t own or claim the movement or the people in it, so you have to get rid of the control. Rediscover your core, then move forward: The story of Seats2meet

Organizations you partner with for over many years are sometimes the ones whose history and core values you’re completely oblivious of, just because you’ve never taken the time to talk about it. This week I visited Seat2meet’s Lenneke van Rossum for a conversation about their expedition. What follows here is what I took home from the interview.

The roots of Seats2meet aren’t found in an overly spectacular sector, namely meeting room rentals. At the moment the crisis arises, Seats2meet notices the drop in requests for rooms directly. What a moment to start thinking about the questions ‘Who am I’? and ‘What value do I add to clients?’. ‘Facilitating meeting spaces for people’ turned out to be an accurate description of their core value. From this point they started building.

Sharing of abundance

Nowadays, many people equate ‘continuously building’ with ‘spending money’. Yet, you might also look at what it is that you already possess, and consequently ask yourself how you could use it differently or more consistently in reaching your goals? Thinking from abundance in stead of lack. Sounds easy, though it proofed not to be. Seats2meet earned money with meeting rooms, but faced a mostly empty lobby in the mean time. All basic facilities (internet, heating, etc.) where paid, so opening this space was a mere logical choice in hindsight. Note that ‘logical’ doesn’t equal ‘easy’ or ‘greatly celebrated by colleagues’.

Growth by letting go

The company Seats2meet saw a major growth over the last few years. Starting from one location in one country, they quickly expanded to 150 locations in 25 countries, still working with only 6 FTE in their headquarters. The freedom Seats2meet offers locations to personalize the main concept, and the way in which they lower thresholds to others to DO is impressive. Impressive, as well as the core of their success. Only by letting go and positioning yourself as facilitator, you might encounter such a growth. Not by trying to do and control all yourself, but rather by letting go. Honestly, it is much more fun to facilitate others and see them being empowered, while you are working on the bigger picture. So, it seems to me.

Linking two worlds

The one transition I noticed most clearly from outside is the way Seats2meet has learned that the only way to change the world is by making connections. In the beginning their message concerned, in my opinion, too much a far future –sometimes with the tendency to disguise the now. I notice that Seats2meet’s team has grown to a club seeking connections by taking people by the hand, especially during last years. Continuously moving ahead, step by step.

Growing within your own core

Where I just remarked the core of the company as ‘facilitating meetings’, I understood during our conversation, they had taken quite some steps as well. From facilitating meetings, from a traditional role in location rental, to facilitating dynamic and relevant meetings. The tool they use is called ‘The Serendipity Machine’: an online tool in which users show their skills and needs. The system then creates the link.

Future

So, Seats2meet grew from a meeting room rental service to a … let’s say… facilitator in connections and meetings. With the (Artificial Intelligence) algorithm which is now being build for the arrangement of dynamic and relevant meetings. Combined with the company’s hospitality roots –hospitality professionals know like no other to centralize the customer, and don’t need this wisdom written on the walls, to be reminded accordingly– they ensure a possible growth in a countless number of branches and functionalities, with which they are well prepared for the future. I’m curious to see how their expedition continues!

Mensen raken

Mensen raken is één van de drie uitgewerkte)* dromen voor Seats4silence: HET platform voor kleinschalig werken en ont-moeten in de natuur.

“De unieke ervaring op seats4silence locaties ontstaat in een groene omgeving in combinatie met persoonlijke ondernemersverhaal”,

betoogde de derde groep op de seats4silence summit 1 juni jl.

Deze ingrediënten zijn voor iedere ondernemer en locatie anders en brengt interessante diversiteit in het netwerk.

De werkgroep wil de kracht van Seats4silence graag online delen met aansprekende video’s. Ze adviseren alle seats4silence ondernemers als eerste stap:

“Zet je persoonlijke verhaal op papier”

Deze verhalen kunnen (mbv van het S2M netwerk) vertaald worden naar aansprekende videopresentaties die mensen raken.  Deze verhalen verrijken onze website en verbinden nieuwe mensen aan ons gedachtegoed zodat, in 3 jaar, ons netwerk globaal kan uitgroeien.

Seats4silence genoemd in het AD: De natuur wordt steeds populairder als werkplek

Vorige week verscheen er een uitgebreid artikel in het Algemeen Dagblad over de natuur als werkplek. In de hoofdrol onder andere Eline van de Veen van Seats4silence. Je kunt het artikel hieronder lezen, dit is een kopie van het originele artikel dat hier te vinden is. 

Niemand die je stoort en toch goed bereikbaar. Steeds meer ondernemers en flexwerkers trekken met hun laptop de natuur in. Als Chiel van Leeuwen (29) op zijn werk bij energie-startup Vandebron achter zijn computer zit, is er de hele dag de kakofonie van het Amsterdamse Rembrandtplein. De rinkelende trams. De lallende toeristen. De toeterende taxi’s. Rumoer. Altijd rumoer. Maar vandaag is het anders. De noise canceling koptelefoon is wel mee, maar hangt het grootste deel van de tijd werkloos om zijn nek.

Voor één dag heeft Van Leeuwen samen met drie collega’s de Amsterdamse binnenstad verruild voor een werkplek op Roggebotstaete: een ecologisch landgoed – meer dan honderd voetbalvelden vol groen – aan het Flevolandse Vossemeer.

Zwembroek

Een zomerbries waait door de struiken. Het ruikt naar zonnebrandcrème en boterbloempjes. Hond Muga hapt naar vliegen in het hoge gras. ,,Goed hè?” glundert Van Leeuwen, terwijl hij over het scherm van zijn laptop naar een waterpartij staart. ,,Jammer dat ik niet gewend ben een zwembroek mee te nemen naar kantoor. Ik zou nu graag een duik nemen.”

Tom van de Beek (38) kijkt het tafereel vanuit de schaduw van zijn caravan tevreden aan. Amper twee jaar geleden bedacht de ondernemer met twee kompanen Kantoorkaravaan. Het concept was simpel. Wat nu als ze een stoet stijlvolle caravans begonnen die het hele jaar het land door zou trekken, van natuurgebied naar natuurgebied?

Van alle gemakken voorzien

Elke caravan vormt een mobiel kantoor, bestaande uit een aantal flexwerkplekken, simpel te reserveren via internet. Niet op het elektriciteitsnet aangesloten, maar toch van alle gemakken voorzien; dankzij een stel zonnepanelen op het dak is er gewoon draadloos internet, kan de mobiele telefoon worden opgeladen en staat er zoals op elk kantoor een koffiezetautomaat te gorgelen.

,,Door mijn eigen ervaring als zelfstandig ondernemer had ik alle populaire flexwerkplekken al weleens gezien”, legt Van de Beek uit. De hippe koffiebarretjes waar jonge creatievelingen met schuimende frappuccino’s achter hun MacBooks gekluisterd zitten. De gepimpte fabriekspanden waar whizzkids en webdesigners tezamen achter de pingpongtafel staan. Nou goed, we kennen de clichés. Van de Beek: ,,Het zijn mooie werkplekken, dat zonder meer. Maar het zijn niet bepaald de plekken waar je in alle rust aan je werk kunt zitten. Ze bevinden zich stuk voor stuk in het rumoer van de stad.”

Composttoilet

Vorig voorjaar begonnen daarom de eerste wagens van de Kantoorkaravaan te rollen. Vijf caravans zijn er al. Middels crowdfunding moet de stoet de komende tijd steeds langer worden. Aan de vraag zal het in ieder geval niet liggen. Ook deze zonnige morgen in mei is er een goede bezetting op Roggebotstaete: een kluitje jonge flexwerkers zit op hooibalen tegen de caravans; laptops op schoot en de blote voeten in het gras.

En niet alleen het zzp-gilde is enthousiast; dankzij de groeiende populariteit van het Nieuwe Werken weten ook grote bedrijven Van de Beek steeds vaker te vinden. Bedrijven als KPN bijvoorbeeld, dat de werknemers door heel het land een lappendeken aan flexibele werkplekken aanbiedt. ,,Via een collega hoorde ik van de Kantoorkaravaan”, vertelt Bertram Bruins (41), productmanager bij KPN en vandaag kantoor houdend in de caravans op Roggebotstaete.

Resultaat

,,We gaan in Nederland steeds meer toe naar een resultaatgedreven economie: ik word niet langer afgerekend op de vraag hoeveel uren ik op het werk aanwezig ben, maar op de vraag of ik mijn taken afkrijg. In de praktijk betekent dit dat ik gemiddeld nog maar zo’n twee dagen per week tussen de collega’s op kantoor zit. De andere dagen werk ik waar ik maar wil. Thuis. Bij Van der Valk. Of in dit geval: in de Flevolandse natuur.”

Vooral dat laatste bevalt prima, oordeelt Bruins. ,,Op kantoor word je voortdurend op de schouders getikt door collega’s. En ook in zo’n koffietentje schiet het niet op. Je bent meer met je omgeving bezig dan met je werk.”

Prikkels

Collega Jan Rijk Vonk (45): ,,Ik wil niet zeggen dat ik ADHD heb, maar het gaat wel die kant op. In een kantoortuin of koffietentje krijg ik zoveel prikkels voor mijn neus dat ik doorgaans maar weinig werk gedaan krijg. Thuis in Amstelveen werken helpt ook niet altijd; als er dan een Boeing overvliegt, betrap ik mezelf er toch weer op dat ik uit het raam zit te staren. Hier hoor je enkel de wind, maar dat inspireert alleen maar.”

Bruins: ,,Ik kan hier in alle rust mijn to-dolijstje wegwerken. Ik vreesde van tevoren dat het bloedheet zou worden in zo’n caravannetje, maar het tocht prima door. Ik heb een speakertje meegenomen voor een conferencecall. Ik zit lekker in het zonnetje. Dit soort vrijheid is met geen salaris te betalen.” Ja, er is één nadeel, moppert hij dan. ,,We mochten niet voor de caravan parkeren, dus ik moest eerst tien minuten over het erf lopen voordat ik bij mijn plek was aangekomen.”

,,Die wandeling door de natuur is juist onderdeel van de ervaring”, lacht initiatiefnemer Van de Beek later. ,,Je hoofd komt meteen in de juiste sferen. Maar het klopt dat we de verwachtingen misschien wat beter moeten managen. We hebben ook weleens een zakenvrouw op pumps langs gehad; niet bepaald het handigste schoeisel in de natuur. En er is geen riolering, hè. Als je hier in driedelig pak door de chauffeur wordt afgezet, moet je bij hoge nood nog steeds op het composttoilet.”

Toch is het geen ‘geitenwollensokkending’, stelt Van de Beek. ,,Geitenwollensokkentypes komen toch wel in de natuur. Wij willen juist de massa bereiken. Laten zien dat je vaker in de natuur kunt zijn dan enkel eens in de zoveel tijd in de vakantie, of het weekend.”

Het is zijn grote missie als ‘ecopreneur’: de moderne mens weer in verbinding brengen met de natuur. ,,Honderdduizenden jaren hebben we als mensen middenin de wildernis geleefd”, doceert Van de Beek. ,,Pas de laatste eeuwen is dat veranderd. Maar ik geloof oprecht dat we diep vanbinnen nog allemaal de behoefte voelen in de natuur te zijn. Soms is het een latent verlangen en moet het vuurtje een beetje worden aangewakkerd. Gelukkig kan dat. Dankzij de technieken van deze tijd kunnen we gewoon bereikbaar zijn voor de hele wereld, terwijl we middenin de natuur zitten. Het is de perfecte combinatie. Ik zie geen enkele reden meer waarom je liever in een muf vergaderzaaltje zou gaan werken.”

Het liefst zou hij met zijn karavaan dan ook halt houden in de mooiste natuurgebieden van Nederland. Maar hij snapt ook wel: hoe beter beschermd de wildernis is, hoe minder mogelijkheden om er neer te strijken. En dus is het zoeken naar alternatieven. Roggebotstaete. Het Amsterdamse bos. Een stel stadstuinen aan de rand van de hoofdstad. Een landgoed op de flanken van de Veluwe. Van de Beek: ,,Als je er geen auto’s kunt horen, zijn we al een heel eind.”

Groen zusje

Hij is niet de enige die op zoek is naar de mooiste werkplekken in de natuur. Ook bij Seats2Meet hebben ze door dat er meer is dan leegstaande kantoorpanden en oude fabrieken. Naast meer dan 1.800 reguliere flexplekken en vergaderzalen die zij beheren ontstond vorig jaar het groene zusje Seats4Silence, een website waar een werkplek kan worden geboekt op boerderijen, in theetuinen en boomgaarden.

,,In eerste instantie zijn mensen vaak ietwat huiverig om met hun laptop de natuur in te gaan”, weet initiatiefnemer Eline van de Veen (51). ,,Dan zeggen ze: ‘Heb je niet iets op vijf minuten fietsen van het centrum?’ Maar als ze eenmaal de drempel hebben genomen, willen ze vaak niets anders meer.”

Samenwerking

Maar waarom? Wat is de winst van zo’n werkdag in het groen? Een van de voordelen is volgens Van de Veen het gemak waarmee tussen de knotwilgen en paardenbloemen samenwerkingsverbanden ontstaan. ,,Kijk, Seats2Meet heeft natuurlijk met afstand de meeste boekingen. Maar ik zie dat er bij de locaties van Seats4Silence veel gemakkelijker contact wordt gemaakt tussen de aanwezigen. Op zo’n reguliere flexplek zit iedereen met de oogkleppen op naar zijn scherm te staren. In de natuur kijk je meer om je heen, staan je zintuigen open, en maak je makkelijker een praatje. Zo ontstaan vaak heel vruchtbare kruisbestuivingen.”

En er zijn meer voordelen van werken in de natuur. Van de Veen: ,,In een werkproces gaat het nooit alleen maar om produceren. Er zijn ook momenten dat je werk is gebaat bij reflectie en creativiteit. Juist op die dagen zou je de natuur moeten opzoeken. In de buitenlucht worden er andere verbindingen gemaakt in je hoofd. Je komt op gedachten die je op je vaste werkplek nooit te binnen waren geschoten.

Creatief

Talloze onderzoeken wezen al uit dat je creativiteit, concentratie en productiviteit worden bevorderd door simpelweg in de natuur te zijn.” Van de Beek: ,,Ook Einstein en Nietzsche zweerden bij hun dagelijkse natuurwandelingen.”

Voor wat extra afwisseling in de werkdag biedt Van de Beek zelfs de mogelijkheid aan om in de pauze schapen te scheren of een spoedcursus bijenhouden of wildplukken te volgen. ,,Er zijn werkgevers die denken dat we hier maar een beetje zitten te lanterfanten, maar die hebben het echt niet begrepen. Bedrijven hebben er baat bij dat hun werknemers gelukkig en gezond zijn. Ik geloof oprecht dat er veel minder burn-outs zouden zijn, als mensen vaker in de natuur zouden werken.”

Jaloers

Op Roggebotstaete is het tijd voor de middagpauze. ,,Lunchen!” brult terreinbeheerder Lennard, terwijl hij in zijn tractor komt aantuffen met een laadbak vol kakelverse ingrediënten. Karnemelkbrood. Paddenstoelenkaas. Aardbeien. ,,We moeten zo even een fotootje maken”, grijnst Van Leeuwen. ,,Als de collega’s op kantoor dit zien worden ze stikjaloers.”

Quasi-verontschuldigend: ,,Ja, we gaan straks gewoon weer werken, hoor. Maar we hebben zojuist wel impulsief besloten om vanmiddag een brainstormwandeling te houden. Het is hier veel te inspirerend om er alleen maar e-mails uit te rammen.”

The future of transport? a new bicycle autobahn in Germany

This morning I read a post on shareable.net about a new bicycle autobahn for bicycles in Germany (radschnellweg). Is this the future of our transport? As we can read, the idea was sparked six years ago when a cultural project caused the one-day closure of the road between Duisburg and Dortmund and more than three million people flooded the road on bikes, skates, and feet. Last December, Germany’s first stretch of bike highway opened for business between Mülheim an der Ruhr and Essen. Eventualy, the Radschnellweg will link 10 cities and four universities with 62 miles of bike highway.

The bikeways — and parallel pedestrian paths — are completely separated from the vehicle lanes, with a 13-foot width, tunnels, lights, and snow clearing because safety and accessibility issues are two of the biggest obstacles to biking. Coupled with Europe’s blossoming affection for electric bikes and Germany’s limited proximity between cities, the Radschnellweg stand to attract a new wave of pedal-powered commuters.

Why a bike autobahn?

According to the German national cycling club ADFC, Germany already has about 200 long-distance cycle routes tallying up more than 70,000 kilometers, in addition to smaller, regional bike paths within cities and on the countryside. But the RS1 bicycle highway would be different.

Like highways for cars, the bike autobahn is designed to have flat surfaces and straight distances without crossroads, together with illumination and winter-weather maintenance. The bike autobahn would allow fast and safe transport over long distances, also opening the doors to the use of electric bikes as a way to replace cars. In contrast with other bike roads, the RS1 is not planned only as a hobby route, but rather as daily route for workers and students.

Oude V&D-gebouw Haarlem opent haar deuren voor experimenteel warenhuis

Locoburgemeester Joyce Langenacker opende op 15 juli 2016 het oude V&D-gebouw Haarlem. Een nieuw popup warenhuis in een historisch pand. Haarlem is een toffe ontmoetingsplek en inspirerend podium rijker. Waar ondernemers werken aan de ‘Meet&Share tafel’ van Seats2meet en de creatieve makers van GATHER ontmoeten.

Opening deuren experimenteel warenhuis

Het oude V&D-gebouw in Haarlem heeft een nieuwe bestemming gevonden. De bovenste verdieping kwam afgelopen maand in het nieuws doordat huurders zich konden melden bij verhuurder Camelot Europe. Het winkel en keldergedeelte werd 15 juli 2016 geopend door locoburgemeester Joyce Langenacker. Gather, het warenhuis van de kleinschalige maakindustrie en innovatieve merken neemt deze maand samen met handenvol creatieven haar intrek in het winkelgedeelte op de onderste twee verdiepingen.

Van winkelpand naar warenhuis

Gather was tot voor kort een podium voor (startende) ondernemers, jong design talent en gevestigde innovatieve merken aan een kleiner pand in Haarlem. Het pop up warenhuis in de Grote Houtstraat staat voor een verrassende mix van creatieve producten. Een voorbeeld van creatieven en merken aangesloten zijn Oscar van der Linden (Seats2meet ondernemer), 3D Hubs, José van Waarde, Linja Shoes, Arp Design, Bebob Design, Fabel van Gyda Kropff, Gijs Dutch Design Brillen, Akwan2fo African Fashion, Breizh World, Made buy Nana, Bulbed, Miss Green, Kim Braam, Babs en Sas de Vries.

Aangesloten ondernemers krijgen een letterlijke etalage. Samen zorgt dit voor een steeds veranderende winkel waarbij de inrichting en het aanbod nooit hetzelfde zal zijn. De organisatie van evenementen, show, debatten en manifestaties worden een belangrijk onderdeel van het totaalconcept Gather. Initiatiefnemer Bernice Bartling vertelt: ‘Vaak zitten makers opgesloten in hun ateliers, alleen met zichzelf of een paar medewerkers. Nu komen de makers midden in de reuring. Dan gaat er iets met hen gebeuren. Gaan de luiken open. Op z’n minst komt daar co-creatie uit.’

Verkoop ondergeschikt maken aan de beleving

Initiatiefnemer Danny Van Heusden legt uit wat consumenten kunnen verwachten met een bezoek aan het oude V&D-pand in Haarlem: ‘Verrassen, verbazen en verwonderen van het publiek staat voorop.’ Er is gekozen om verkoop ondergeschikt te maken. Dit vertaalt zich door het ontbreken van kassa’s en verkopers. Makers werken met QR-codes en laten via internet de afhandeling plaatsvinden. De doelgroep is in eerste instantie groot Amsterdam, later uitgroeiend naar heel Nederland. Ook zijn er hierna internationale plannen. De mensen die Gather verwacht aan te trekken zijn hoger opgeleide mensen van elke leeftijd die houden van cultuur en nieuwsgierig zijn naar nieuwe dingen.

Evenementen in popup warenhuis

Gather laat debatten, shows en evenementen organiseren door partners zoals Haerlems Bodem, Circus Circulair en Seats2meet. De horeca wordt verzorgt door Thuskomme, Uiltje Craft Beer Bar en Victor’s Espresso.

Yvonne Haneman van Ground8 en Klaartje Vreeken van KLAAR voor Talent organiseren de vijfde ‘Inspiration Thursday’ van Seats2meet Haarlem op donderdag 15 september vanaf 18 uur. Het onderwerp is ‘Nieuwe Economie’. Met sprekers die de nieuwe economie representeren – GATHER, Circus Circulair en Part-up. I arrived at the one and only location for today, S2M station Amersfort. I was greeted at the door by a friendly voice over the speakers saying something in Dutch. I did not understand a word but her tone was welcoming so I felt a positive aura about this place before even going inside.

Entering the location I introduced myself to the staff, a couple of kind people who welcomed me to the place and gave me a small tour. As usual a big part of the place is used as the open workplace. High tables, normal tables, couches, a combination of modern furniture and light wood. It kind of seems familiar. Consistent but diverse. I asked the owner at the lunch table who designs the layout and she told me they hire interior designers. Also this.

 

Then there was my favorite part of the place. A skywalk connecting the workplace with the offices. My host explained that people have their phone calls here so they don’t disturb. And what a nice place to have a phone call! Personally I would just watch the people underneath and not pay attention to the guy who is on the phone. Not professional you say? Ok, my bad. But… 

The meeting spaces were pretty standard. It is convenient that the location is just above the Amersfoort train station.

This place was not really crowded. The hosts explained that it is holiday season at the moment and the weather outside is beautiful so those are two reasons keep people away. Still a fair amount of people were working here. I found a nice couch and got going. This location has been running for five years. So when it opened I was still in school and wasn’t allowed to have a beer in Greece. We had lunch all together, so I introduced myself to everyone and that opened the door to general conversation. Everyone was pretty friendly and many asked me a question or two. I always like these small “get to know each other” moments. All in all I bonded with this place more than any other for two reasons. First it was smaller than other locations. Secondly I was on my own so I had to connect to the surroundings. And trust me, it was not so hard to do. 

I think that’s it for the Safari. It’s been a ride. I feel like all the places are different but at the same time they seem familiar. I find it amazing how big this movement has become in the Netherlands, so many locations in so many cities. I literally don’t have a negative thought about the places. I hope this initiative of Seats2meet international goes on and more people get to know the culture of Seats2meet.

To be honest I’m a little worried that I am going to be accused of fangirling with all the positive stuff I write. But it happens. Life has been good to me the past two weeks. I finished my exams, went on holidays in Santorini and now the Seats2meet experience. I really enjoy my time in the Netherlands. Also, I happen to like all the locations I have been to. They just are nice places. And I can tell that there is a lot of effort by the staff that is creating this whole positive vibe that makes me write all these positive things about the locations. Seats2Meet Safari, Day 3

Amsterdam

I keep missing the trains I have to catch. And it’s a matter of 1 or 2 minutes most of the time. Note to self, “start 5′ earlier”.

Den Bosch

I missed a train to Utrecht and I arrived there 2 minutes late to catch the train to Eindhoven. Beatriz and Marina were kind enough to wait for the next train with me although i felt really bad to have made them wait. Moving on, as we were on the train to Eindhoven Beatriz had the spontaneous idea to visit the location in Den Bosch. Our train was passing by the station where it is located so it wasn’t much of a delay.

The location normally has two floors but the one was closed so we only got to see one of them. But it was a nice one. There were two things that stood out for me. Firstly there was a continuous weblike design on the walls across the meeting rooms that was kind of telling a story with the names of the rooms and connecting them all together. I like the interior design in every single one of the locations that we have visited. This one was one of the best.

There was also a rather curious object in the room. I would describe it as a piece of readymade art. It’s title was “serendipity machine” and it represents the algorithm that is behind the serendipity machine that is implemented in the Seats2Meet website. The piece of art doesn’t have any lines of code though. It consists of lots of gears and tracks and some small glass balls. It is even functional we were told. You put the balls in on the top and they roll towards the bottom. Then, six wooden “pizza slice” shaped pieces close to form a circle and in the middle there is the outcome. The outcome is random. It either is TSM for “the Serendipity Machine” or STM for “Seats to Meet”. Clever, right? Below you can see Marcel Nicolaas, the owner of the location, and the Serendipity Machine.

It’s a shame we didn’t see it in action, but we were too afraid to break something in order to use it. We grabbed a cup of coffee, and in Marina’s case a hot chocolate, and went on to catch the train to Eindhoven… and some Pokemon while waiting for the train.

Eindhoven

Have I ever mentioned I like stuff being made inside old factories? No? Well I do. Firstly because they usually have a really high celling, not many interior walls, they are big and have big windows so they create a feeling of being outside while being inside. Secondly because I don’t like places being deserted. It saddens me when once thriving places fall apart. But I love how people use stuff that is unimportant to others, and with determination, time, effort and craftiness turn it into something living again. It’s kind of like with nature if you see it in a broader perspective. Something dies and something new is born. The circle of life applies to everything I guess. And in order for Society 3.0 to be born, the industrial world has to die. What a poet I am. What a time to be alive. I think I’m getting sidetracked here. The second location…

Is in an old Phillips factory. We had to walk past some graffiti to get there from the Eindhoven S Stripe Station but I really didn’t mind. I won’t describe the place much cause you can see some action of it in this video. What I will do is tell you that the food was amazing and made out of organic Dutch farm products and that this was one of my top 3 favourite locations.

I will also go a step further and share something I realized. All these places’ design and furniture remind me of recently opened cafeterias in Athens. Putting the dots together I tried to think of the people that go to those places and they are mostly students who want to work on group assignments or freelancers that want to work outside of home. Only there is no real interaction. Maybe the idea behind seats2meet is already in Greece and we only need to twist and apply the formula to those kind of places. Or maybe it is something in between. There is a cultural difference between Greece and the Netherlands for sure. If you think about it, it is only reasonable. I think we have to respect that fact as we try to make this project work in Greece. I strongly believe it will benefit both parties.

But those are just thoughts of the top of my head. I’ll give it more organised thought through the weekend and come right back at you with it. Until then think about your career and the meaning of life. (Go and Catch ’em all!)

Seats2Meet Safari, Day 2

Amsterdam

The day started with a nice friendly conversation at the train station to Utrecht. Seems like everyone wants to know what is wrong with Greece once they know I am from there. I don’t really have an answer. I know there is a lot wrong but there are also a lot of nice hard working people there, that are going through a really rough time. And I think it will work out in the end but the approach from all the sides has to change. But I am not here to talk about that am I?

 

Utrecht

The two locations we visited today were close to one another and we did a lot of back and forth. They also have a similar style of decoration (at least in my eyes) so I really felt I could have been at the same location. Since this is my personal view it might be a little inaccurate cause my mind is buzzing with information right now. Lets get the story started. Why don’t we take it from the top?

I met Beatriz at the Meeting Plaza at Utrecht Central Station. This place started out as a meeting space, but then something important happened. People were meeting at the lunch table and making connections. So that was the moment the owners and future founders of seats2meet realized this is a thing of value and social capital was being created. Now it is a seats2meet location. The location itself was meeting my imagination of a modern innovative european workplace. Nice colorful walls and a subtle carpet to go along with wooden and plastic tables and chairs.

After getting a feel for the place we went to the main seats2meet location in Utrecht to meet Marina who was already being busy taking pictures for the seats2meet instagram account. This place was really crowded and it was something that gave me a positive vibe. I felt like “this is working”. After the struggles I have witnessed of creating that kind of a community back in Greece it gave me hope and determination to continue. Or maybe restart would be a better word for me since I have been absent for the last months.

We then had lunch with some of the seats2meet staff. Really nice people. Friendly, open, showing genuine interest in you and always up for a nice meaningful chat. At the table we agreed to shoot a vlog with Kevin Schenkers.

After lunch Beatriz showed me the way to the Seats2Meet International Headquarters where I met Pieter Vermeer. We talked about his experience of helping unemployed people find jobs, something that Greece could use at this point. Of course it isn’t as easy as it sounds because there are no jobs in Greece right now. But this doesn’t mean people should sit on their couches and wait for things to change.

I believe we have to change in order to change the things around us. So Pieter basically helps unemployed people organize voluntarily around 500 events per year that help them better their chances to find a job through workshops on professional feats like having a better linkedin page and more. If the volunteers find a job, they have to quit their peers and go work on their job like true professionals. This peer to peer initiatives are happening in Greece too with actions like Job Pairs or 100mentors. It is also something Stone Soup is trying to accomplish, getting young talented people with no experience a good job based on skills and not work experience.

After a quick chat with the staff I went back downstairs to the co-working space to meet co-owner Nynke Visser to take a tour through the place. 19 meeting rooms, all different? It is impressive to me, and you are certainly finding one that suits your needs and preferences. I personally liked “the living”, a room that contains all the books that make up the vision of Seats2meet.

We met up with Kevin at the big conference room to shoot the vlog I mentioned earlier. I was nervous because I am not used to talking in front of a camera, even if it is a phone camera. But in the end it worked out and Kevin is editing right now. In the vlog session we talked about the stuff that happens in Greece, what has impressed me the most in my brief stay, whats the thing I’m taking back home, what Kevin’s view on media versus text is, the Permanent Future Lab, and general conversation about technology social capital and innovation. I don’t know what footage is usable so you have to check it out. It will be around soon i guess.

After that the day was over and I returned to my base in Amsterdam. I definitely want to return to Utrecht and work with the seats2meet staff. Trying to caption the day, “New places, new faces, all good!”
