Working in teams could be effective and fun if only…

Constantly we are working together with more and more people in more and more places. Team diversity increases, real face to face interactions decrease. We work with people from and in different countries, time-zones, cultures and in different languages. We are communicating through many different channels and devices often also outside regular office hours. This asks a lot from us! The market is flooded with ever new innovations on collaboration. Online tools, workshops and trainings.

Pressure increases and it becomes even more difficult to keep track and a good overview of our work and the people we collaborate with. To deal with these rapid changes and to make collaborating in this vast net effectively possible, an ever growing number of smart ideas has been developed. Impressive promises are being made and it is hard to tell what works and what doesn’t.

Learning & the next step

The big amount of tools and methods that are supposed to make our lives easier show how badly we feel the urge to improve the way we work together with others. But how can we actually do this?

We believe that the best learnings and improvements happen with fun and interaction. That is why we at Future of Organizations Camp use innovative ways of bringing people together which are result-driven and at the same time offer space for play, spontaneity and the things that are really important to the special mix of people being present.

It’s about making best use of the collaboration tools that are already implemented, identifying why they might not hold their promises and how to change this. But also to meet others tackling the efficiency gap in the 21st century working life from different angles and co-create new concepts & approaches to teamwork.

#FOOC216 offers a limited amount of seats to this unique event on “How to design human collaboration on- and offline”. To share experiences, learn together and co-create next steps to improve teamwork on July 1. / 2. In the Thinking Hut Amsterdam

10 world changing Instagram accounts

First we had facebook, then twitter now we have instagram – and we already have snapchat, but that is the next list we are publishing. What they got being art, photography, inspirational quotes, all in images. That’s why we created this list of intragram owned only by world changing people or initiatives.

Elon Musk

The super entrepreneur, self-taught programmer, founder of paypal, Tesla and SpaceX is on Instragram and is pretty interesting. He have been posting more frequently since last year and among his pictures there are videos of space rockets landings and launching, news about the Tesla models and the day-by-day of the billionaire entrepreneur. Worth following.

JR

The world changing Parisian artist won the 2011 TED Prize. He is an urban activist and has a hell of a story to tell. He made the biggest illegal art exposition in 2 countries: Israel and Palestine. His Instagram account shows Paris and art in a unique way. It is beautiful and world changing.

⚡️⚡️NEW @jr RELEASE !!!!!!!!! on www.social-animals.net (link in bio) ! "Migrants, Walking New York City". 88 x 72 cm / 34,6 x 28,3 in. approx. December 2015. Get a 10% discount on the print using the code WALKJRI (the next 48 hours only). In april 2015, the New York Times Magazine reached out to me to think about a project together. My work has been preoccupied with the theme of immigration. We looked for people who arrived in NYC less than a year ago and we chose 15 coming from all over the world. I photographed them walking in the city all of them completely unknown living in the shadows of the city and learning English slowly. In a few hours during the night with my team, I pasted Elmar, 20 years old who came from Azerbaijan, on the floor of Flat Iron Plaza in New York City. People walked on him all day and no one really noticed him. The april 23rd 2015, Elmar was on the cover of the New York Times magazine that comes out while everyone else was in the shadow. Boosting the Permanent Future Lab movement

As some may know, Permanent Future Lab is a movement where people share the most innovative technologies such as robotics, 3D printers and Virtual Reality by abundance. The first location started in October 2014 at Seats2meet.com Utrecht CS, and currently there are 5 locations in The Netherlands where those kind of new technologies are shared.

To boost the Permanent Future Lab movement with topics such as identity before branding, business 4 exponential growth, lean working, pitching, social & rural entrepreneurship local immersion, the movement will join Pandorahub’s X-cultural Startup Bootcamp in Bali from June 27th – July 2nd. Seats2meet.com is the proud sponsor to make this bootcamp possible for Permanent Future Lab.

During the bootcamp Paul Westerink will do short video interviews with me (Jurjen de Vries), co-initiator of Permanent Future Lab and delegate. From there on I’ll share the knowledge of above topics that were handled that day. To learn more check the video interview.

Alvast bedankt!

Team Seats2meet

Recharge changes the way how Hotels charge for their accommodations

Are you just passing by and don’t want to pay per night in a hotel? How about paying per minute? That is what Recharge, a startup from San Francisco does. You go in the website and pay to use all the hotels establishments that someone gets when paying for the whole night, but per minute. That means you can use the gym, swimming pool, spa, take a nap, a shower or a bath without having to pay for an absurd price.

This comes with the trend of not wasting spaces, just like seats2meet does for workspaces. We don’t even let people waste workspaces at their own houses. We have an imaginary scarcity of space. I say imaginary because if you look around there is a lot of empty spaces, the only reason they are not available to us is due a matter of pricing or inaccessibility.

When we offer them in a different way both sides can win. The people and companies that have an abundance of space can win money or social capital. And the consumer has a place to work or to take a nap. The hotels in that case have their rooms available for a period of time, or during the low seasons and during that time they are not rentable. Recharge changes that. They can rent it in a different way.

Beyond fulfilling a demand and the spaces in abundance it is extremely practical. As the website explains there is no need to book in advance or to tell the hotel how long you are staying. The room is available to you the moment you book. Music for the ears of the jetsetters and digital nomads, I guess.

Right now they are in the pilot phase and work only in San Francisco. The payment is fixed of 67 cents per minute or 40 dollars per hour. In an interview to Tech Crunch, Emmanuel Bamfo, the CEO of Recharge told the company is growing 104% month after month for 10 months now and the users are the most variable, they had users staying 12 minutes and others staying 25 hours, there is no minimum or maximum stay. It’s totally flexible.

Now if you are used to Motels, as the Brazilian use them, if you know what I mean, be aware that it is different. The app is focused on business people who are in-between meetings or in short stays in a determined city and want to refresh, get ready or even wait for a late flight. As you can rate the hotel, the hotel can also rate you. Just like Uber and Airbnb.

It might be a huge success or not. But initiatives as Recharge do show a trend that is long coming. Charging for abundance in a different way and optimize what you already have with new businesses models. So if you have a brilliant idea about how to use something that already exists, in a different way, now is the time.

S2M for Locals: Let’s wrap up and get ready for Phase II!

It’s been about a month since we started the ‘S2M for Locals’-pilot, and man oh man has it been a busy, interesting, exciting and impressive month! So many learnings, so many new people and so much serendipity; it has truly been a great success. We really want to thank all of the people that opened up their homes and participated in the pilot, and of course also all the people that booked a workspace there!

I travelled wide and far (well, for Dutch standards) to visit all the pilot locations, and each was a true adventure! Read up on my experiences in these blogs:

Together they will create World Peace- and they met through S2M for Locals! Amsterdam, ‘House with a view’

How an author, a graphic designer, a music student and a neuroscientist ended up in the same room Utrecht, ‘het Stadshuisje’

Working at (not on) a massage table Utrecht, ‘Peona’

My first S2M for Locals experience Vinkeveen, ‘Sunny Waterfront Villa at Marina’

DSCF3031

Not only are we (S2M) enthusiastic about the pilot, the surveys and evaluations showed that everyone involved really liked the concept and that people really enjoyed working at these locations. ‘Serendipity at your own kitchen table’, it started off as a hypothesis, but it has most certainly been confirmed! On average people rated the locations with a 9.5, stating that the Locals-environment really gave rise to good conversations and opportunities to explore each other’s relevance. All the hosts really want to continue as a Locals-location, claiming that it makes them feel more integrated and part of the larger S2M community.

DSCF2889

What now? We have now concluded the first phase of the S2M for Locals pilot. We’ll take a short break, implement some changes, make it even better, and then we’ll continue in September! Based on the surveys and feedback we’ve decided it’s best to focus on developing a business model, meaning that new hosts can choose to offer their kitchen table in exchange for social capital ór monetary capital! Additionally, in order to further facilitate and instigate personal contact prior to arrival, we’re going to work on developing the booking system. This development will focus on facilitating personal contact and connections between the host and the booker, by adding a chat function throughout the booking process.

Do you have a spare place at your kitchen table? Or an extra desk you want to share? Do you want to be part of this awesome project and see what kind of serendipitous encounters await you in your own home?  Just register your workspace on locals.seats2meet.com and we’ll get in touch with you!

Seats4silence first followers

SEATS4SILENCE SUMMIT 2016 The first of June we experienced a beautiful day on nature estate Roggebotstaete. It touched me to be working in nature the whole day with such an engaged group of people. I feel like the moment was comparable to the power illustrated in this video about ‘the first follower(s)’.

Seats2meet turned on the music in 2014, Eline started dancing and Astrid a few others from the Kromme Rijnstreek followed. In 2015 a group from the Groene Woud followed suit. At the summit, the group was such an organic whole that it did not even matter who started dancing.

Outcome

Led by Cees Hoogendijk we conducted an Appreciative Inquiry into how Seats4silence can become even more valuable to all people involved. We went from – discover – to – dream – to – design -. The outcomes are a good representation of our concept and the summit day on a whole – a nice synergy.

Seats4silence is mainly a network, the outdoor locations are connecting places to meet. Watch dutch video >>
Seats4silence is the – Magic Door – to the essence and relaxed working. Watch dutch video >>
Seats4silence want to touch people. Entrepreneurs take the stage and share their authentic elaboration of their ideals. Watch dutch video >>

Continuation

I will share the more detailed results and experiences through blogs in this S2M magazine. All S4S locations organize at least one meeting per year. In this way we involve the whole community and help people to start building and developing ideas. If you want to participate in that cocreation process, let me know.

Finally

Share your experiences outside in our groups on Facebook and LinkedIn
Photos Cees and Eline you can use freely, just like the video of Jurjen
We hope to meet you on our locations and events!

Eline van de Veen – Seats4silence with a lot of thanks to the cocreators of the summit:

Cees Hoogendijk – Appreciative Inquiries, Astrid van Bennekom, Marloes van Oorspronk, Tineke de Keijzer, Adriaan Kodde, Kuun Jenniskens, KantoorKaravaan Tom van de Beek en Lennard Duijvestijn Roggebotstaete

The commission ~finally~ releases an European agenda for the collaborative economy

After sharing economy companies as Airbnb, Uber and Seats2meet, are already consolidated in the european market, the european commission released “A european agenda for the collaborative economy”. There they notice that with the growth of the model in question, local authorities are responding by making all different regulatory actions. The problem with that those regulations don’t really communicate to each other, and end up preventing people from using it. Even though it has been shown that 17% of europeans do use it already.

The communication was released as a guide for those authorities and to give a direction for the regulations. In the communication various topics are related as the difference between the services provided by an individual or a private company, the peer-to-peer provision, how people who do marginal services should be taxed, user protection and all the benefits the collaborative economy can give to Europe economy. You can read the whole communication here.

Yesterday the EUCoLab – European Collaborative Economy Forum – and its members, including Seats2meet, sent an open letter to the Commissioner Bienkowska congratulating for the new agenda and putting themselves at disposal to any help they can give with the regulation of collaborative economy in Europe.

The letter raises the question of how Europeans are prevented to use the sharing economy in their favour with the current regulations from the Member Parts.

“it is much needed in order for users and entrepreneurs across Europe to fully reap the many benefits of the collaborative economy in terms of jobs, growth, efficient services and the better use of resources.”

This is a great evolution from the government into the future. In their conclusion on the communication they highlight how the EU shouldn’t let the opportunities pass when it comes to innovation in economy.

In view of the significant benefits that new collaborative economy business models can bring, Europe should be open to embracing these new opportunities. The EU should proactively support the innovation, competitiveness and growth opportunities offered by modernisation of the economy.

One small step for the commission and a big step for humanity? We definitely hope the Member States go along and take advantage ASAP. I sure hope the commission start seeing the innovation going around them and be more agile on seeing the advantages and taking action.

Together they will create World Peace- and they met through S2M for Locals!

Serendipity truly is a marvelous thing, and it really can happen everywhere! Even in your own living room at a self-made ping-pong desk. Today May-May from Peace SOS went to work at Erik Visser’s home in Amsterdam. A beautiful Dutch-style house right at the waterfront, only a ten minute bus ride from the central station.

Though this story has many interesting highlights and insights, there is one thing I want to mention straight away: he literally had a massive championship ping-pong table in the middle of his living room! Handcrafted and multi-purposed, that’s some interior design inspiration right there (anyone have a spare ping-pong table I can use for my little student room?).

DSCF3031

But now back to the good stuff; world peace and politics. One of the first things May-May asked me when I walked into the room was whether I knew a good business model for peace. Now I am not often speechless (not even kidding), but I did not have an answer to that. Luckily Erik is, like May-May, actively engaged in politics and they were able to have some fruitful discussions on that topic.

And there you have it ladies and gentlemen; serendipity at your own (ping-pong)table! In the fight for world peace we can all use those little relevant encounters to feed our passion and light our fire. Let’s hope Erik and May-May come up with a good plan and change the world!
