The missing link in our sustainability story
On the 25th of June 2016 I participated in the first civic council of Antwerp (in Dutch) and on the agenda was a fund for sustainability projects. I think it’s a great idea to have a fund for that! Very happy that Antwerp is investing in sustainability! But what is meant by sustainability? It’s one of those terms that is used quite a lot these days. It’s a favorite buzzword for leaders and corporations to indicate they are doing something for society. And we buy into it. Sustainability equals doing something right! Have you ever asked what people actually mean when they use that word?
I got lucky, due to the fact that the topic on the agenda included a text stipulating the criteria to get funding. In order to get your hands on the money your project needs to deal with either energy and/or the environment. In other words, going green (another popular buzzword) is your ticket to funding! Yay!
Pretty good eh? But is it? Does it actually contribute to a liveable society? Well, it depends.
With just these requirements it’s perfectly possible to create a society that is taking care of our environment and where we use 100% renewable across the line … and which is dreadful to live in.
Let me take you on a journey into a hypothetical future where we just take these 2 pillars of sustainability into account …
Building the sustainability empire
Your time machine has landed you in the year 2050. The air you breathe is crystal clear. You see beautiful landscapes, deer are grazing in the meadows and birds are whistling in the trees. If you don’t have deer where you live, replace them with your favorite wild animal.
And there are dead bodies all over the place. You have entered the era of ‘sustainable warfare’. Guns are now 100% recyclable and bullets are made out of compostable material. They even contain nutrients which are good for the environment! All the arms factories run fully on renewable energy. People live in ecologically constructed bunkers which house small, in-house organic farms. Every bunker is self sustaining and is comprised of small communities at war with all the others. In the meantime weapon supplies are guaranteed by solar powered drones which can’t be shot down because the manufacturers made all the weapons ‘smart’. They just simply refuse to fire when aimed at a delivery drone. To further disincentivise trying to shoot them down they armed these drones. Everyone aiming at them will simply be executed with no chance of retaliation.
Welcome to our completely sustainable world! Or not?
The missing link
I’m pretty sure you’ll agree with me that what I described above is not desirable. Yet, it fully complies to a sustainability definition based on renewable energy and care for the environment. We just forgot to add one teeny weeny ingredient, social sustainability. Oops! It’s like opening a restaurant and forgetting to hire a cook.
Now, social sustainability is not an easy one. There is no carbon dioxide level that indicates how well you are doing and you can’t count the square kilometers of forest to see whether you are successful. How do you express social sustainability in numbers? In my opinion, you can’t. At least not in a way that is satisfactory and includes the entire complexity of it. But you can observe and make estimates.
Here are some possible indicators that point towards a socially sustainable society:
There is peace
Suicide rate is low
Crime and violence is low
Level of contentment among the population is high
Collaboration is high
People care about each other and are helpful
Education levels are high
…
As you see, some of these are hard to put down in numbers too. And our current leaders seem to be averse of things that can’t be put down in numbers (Canada is the exception here). But I believe that without adding social sustainability to our story we’re setting ourselves up for a lot of nasty mess. It might be difficult but that does not mean we should ignore it. That’s what creates things like ISIS.
Your thoughts please.

The Meeting of the Future, session 3 – July 4, 2016
Checkin’ in…
One of the latest additions to the S2M product range is S2M for Events, which accelerates interaction and connections between visitors of events. After two pilot rounds now, the product is becoming more and more complete and user friendly, so what better thing to do than to let our S2M Hosts and Ambassadors check in themselves at The Meeting of the Future to actually experience it! Especially since the group has grown from about 10 to 40 people in just few sessions. It pleasantly shows that we all have the need to connect on vision with each other, no matter if you are a S2M Host, Fan or Ambassador. So that’s what we did again, starting off with an interesting quote that Ronald (co-founder Seats2meet and author of Society 3.0) wanted to share with us. A quote that had everything to do with people utilizing their full potential and therefore being able to contribute to a bigger collective. And of course about us being the lucky ones, apart from taking part in this process ourselves, to be the facilitators of this process for other people, both on- and offline!
Creating economical value
By showing us the Multiverse Model of American management thinker Joe Pine, Ronald took us on a journey with some great examples of creating economical value, from commodities to goods, to services, to experiences and transformations at the very top. A transformation, as being a tailor-made experience with an educational element. Even though an experience is already nice to have, it will only last for so long. Learning something new however is something that enriches you, something that no one will be able to take away from you anymore. In the previous session we talked about relevance and its main ingredients: the right time, the right place, the right mix of people. Just imagine what adding offering a transformation to your stakeholders will do to the relevance of your place. The only thing you have left to check is what is actually relevant to them. How about asking? That’s where The Serendipity Machine comes in to help you, asking people for the knowledge they already have. Combined with the answer to the question what knowledge they are looking for, it actually introduces them to the right people. Is it that simple? Yup. It leads them to people they don’t know yet, but do have something relevant to share with them. It leads them to new opportunities to learn and grow. So how to create new economical value again? By offering people a tailor-made experience with an educational element: transformation. Something totally unexpected, yet relevant: serendipity.
Day 2 day business
Now, translating this to day 2 day operations… If you run a S2M location you are busy with generating traffic to that location, facilitating your stakeholders in the best way possible and trying to make their encounters even more meaningful. There are a lot of companies at the moment offering places to meet. So how to distinguish your location from all the others that might have bigger, better, cheaper things to offer? See the above: by offering a real transformation. In the S2M business model social capital plays a big role in the culture we have created. A culture of openness and transparency, where people help each other on their way to success. Meaning this has everything to do with leadership and the vision/mission of an organization. We had an interesting discussion during the second half of this meetup about using the collected data of S2M users to offer them more services. Apart from the fact that we comply to the strict European laws on this issue, at S2M we always value the ethical element very highly. However, it is an interesting question that led to putting this topic on the agenda for the next session, on Monday September 5. During that meetup, you will also be offered a masterclass ‘LinkedIN for organizations’ by Jan Willem Alphenaar, so save the date! Ending the day with networking talks, drinks and a BBQ, seems like a great kick off for the new season to us. What do you say?

I can scratch something off my bucket list –> The Venus Project
Been there done that, I can scratch ‘meet Jacques Fresco and The Venus Project’ off my bucket list.
(In het Nederlands lezen? Scroll naar beneden)
I have been a fan of the Venus Project for 5 years now. Maybe you’ve heard of it, maybe not. In short, Jacques Fresco is a visionair. He is a technical engineer and a behaviour specialist and he created from these point of views complete blueprints of a ‘new world’. He called his philosophy Resource Based Economy and the blueprints he created are from buildings and complete cities, based on this philosophy. Important to know is that it’s not about the technical aspects (even though it’s really impressive), but it’s all about the social changes he wants to achieve. The technique should serve this purpose.
Here you see some of the designs, but for more information take a look at: https://www.thevenusproject.com/
In these five years that I’ve been a fan, I really wanted to meet Jacques Fresco in real life. A couple of weeks ago I thought about it again and I sent them an email with the question if this is possible. Apparently it is quite easy, Jacques gives a seminar and tour at his Research Center in Venus (Florida) every Saturday. The only thing to do is to let them know that you want to join in. Their advice was to come quick because they couldn’t guarantee me that he can do this for a long time, because he is 100 (!!) years old. It didn’t take much time for me to decide to go for it real quick. (My colleagues thought this was the best reason they have ever heard from a colleague to go on a vacation, because of a 100 year old man…). So last June the 25th they were welcoming me at The Venus Project.
When I arrived, there were already about 10 other people waiting next to the parked cars, we weren’t allowed to take a walk there because of the alligators. This one was next to my car…
That was the whole group so it felt like a private session, very cool! Inside a fascinating building, Jacques was already sitting on a couch waiting for us to join. And as you can see on the picture, this man is really old. His best quote of the day was: Once when I spoke with Einstein(!). At that moment you realize that he realy have seen and lived everything. After his lecture we got a tour at the land of the Research Center. There are different kind of buildings they built themselves with their hands, the buildings all based on the pilosophy. Next to this tour we came back at the place where we left Jacques (he doesn’t do the tours himself anymore, he broke his leg when he was 96 and learned to walk again at that age, but the tour is too much for him. Well I forgive him

* Seizoensgericht (daardoor gezond, afwisseling en goedkopere inkoopprijzen)
* Geen waste, doordat er op het saladebuffet niet veel wordt ‘aangemaakt’ dus wat over blijft van het buffet kan in soep of andere gerechten worden bereid de volgende dag
* Specifieke voedingswensen, zoals diëten, allergieën en voorkeuren (zoals vegan) zijn makkelijk zelf door de gast in te vullen (dankzij de do-it-yourself salades)
* Inkoop per week is makkelijker want we bieden de hele week hetzelfde thema waarmee je zelf kunt varië- ren. Op vrijdag werken we weer anti-food waste, doordat we, voor het weekend start, wat we over hebben met elkaar delen
* Meer efficiënte werkprocessen
* Het biedt ons de kans om ook met kleinere leveranciers samen te werken voor specifieke items
* De bijzondere opbouw van de salad-bar oogt creatief, rijkelijk en kleurrijk (overvloedig)
Martine

What is the PermanentBeta Day?
Describe the PermanentBeta day is a hard task, once as its name already tells, it is in constant change. One day will never be like the other, and that is what is so special about it. Every time it gets better and better and better. Yesterday was no exception from that.
More than 600 people gathered to see 52 speakers share their experiences and initiatives. Going from bio hacking to how commercials use words that actually don’t exist to trick our minds. There is something interesting to everyone. You can shape your day on your on way.
Me as a non-dutch-speaker-yet didn’t go to lots of speakings, although I did heard about them later. I chose on focus to meet the people there and enjoy all the experiences. I met tons of super interesting people, did a very needed hour of yoga, played with HTC vive and with Google’s new VR game tilt brush – which is a promise for the next content creators.
Meeting people was easier with the Serendipity Machine, that allowed me to check in the event and see who are the most relevant people for me to meet there. In that way I met a radio show host and a girl who is changing education as we know it since she was 16.
The magical thing about the PermanentBeta day is that everyone has its own amazing experience to tell. What is yours?
In case you totally missed this PermanentBeta day, the next one will be in November and you can’t miss the PermanentBeta festival in September!

Launching the Social Impact Factory in Utrecht: a hotspot for social entrepreneurship
This text is translated from Lancering hotspot voor sociaal ondernemen in Utrecht: Social impact factory Utrecht
Autumn 2016 marks the launch of a new hotspot for social entrepreneurship in Utrecht: the Social Impact Factory Utrecht. It started off as an initiative between Stichting Social Impact Factory,Seats2meet.com and Kirkman Company, and has since then been complemented with the arrival of Legal Impact (Bruggink & Van der Velden Advocaten Belastingadviseurs) and Buzinezzclub Utrecht. Together they founded the Social Impact Factory Utrecht LTD, which will be housed in the historical building on Vredenburg 40 (better known as ‘Staffhorstpand) in Utrecht.
Creating social impact, together
The ‘Staffhorstpand’, a building of about 2.000m2, will function as a work-, meeting and serendipity hotspot for social entrepreneurs such as independent professionals, startups, businesses and organizations. Together they will work on innovative and entrepreneurial solutions for social issues. Coupled with the available network organizations, service providers, investors and funds, this place will function as a national hotspot where all knowledge and expertise surrounding social entrepreneurship will be represented. There will be trainings, workshop and events for startups and established social entrepreneurs, but also for the larger corporations and governments that want to innovate and transform to a more social organization. The focus on creating social impact, the variety of entrepreneurs and organizations, the various activities, the historical building and the fact that the Social Impact Factory Utrecht will become part of the Seats2meet.com ecosystem all contribute to the uniqueness of this hotspot.
Han Hendriks, co-founder of the Social Impact Factory foundation, on the Social Impact factory: “The Social Impact Factory is an inclusive network and platform consisting of a variety of organizations collaborating to innovate and develop entrepreneurial business models for social issues. Since the launch during the Social Enterprise day in May 2015, the platform has welcomed more than 50 business and organizations including the Rabobank, EY, Incluzio, Utrecht University, MVO Nederland, de Koekfabriek and many more. A social enterprise, just like any other enterprise, offers a product or service and has a business model. However, making profits is not the main goal of these enterprises, it is rather a means to achieving a social mission, a means to creating added value or impact.”
Impulse to collaborate
The corresponding vision and mission, the aim of creating added value for participants and the motivation to establish a real instigator for social entrepreneurship, drove the Social Impact Factory to reach out to the developer of well-known work-and meeting space locations ‘Seats2meet.com’.
Mariëlle Sijgers, co-founder of Seats2meet.com and the Social Impact Factory Utrecht: “‘Serendipity’ is one of the distinctive features of our concept, we help in facilitating these ‘random encounters’, which turn out to be relevant for the thing you are working on at one of the S2M locations. The relevant matches are generated through the login systems at an S2M location, which make visible who is present and what kind of knowledge and skills they have. In this way we facilitate relevant collaboration between people present at the location, which improves the quality and value of the work these independent professionals do. The collaboration between the Social Impact Factory and Seats2meet.com means the vision concerning social entrepreneurship and the ambition of the Social Impact Factory can be spread throughout the S2M network.”
The development of the Social Impact Factory Utrecht fits within the current developments of the city of Utrecht. The city houses more and more entrepreneurs, all with a goal of creating social value and making this goal visible. But it is not always easy for these entrepreneurs to give shape to these ambitions. How do you find each other? How do you match these entrepreneurs and investors? “This new hotspot can be a driving factor for such processes, while simultaneously giving a valuable purpose to an empty building and creating employment opportunities”, says Marielle Sijgers.
The ecosystem of social entrepreneurship
The arrival of this new hotspot will strengthen the ecosystem of social entrepreneurship in Utrecht. Utrecht University is the first academic institution to appoint a chair for ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ in the Netherlands. Since the first of May 2016, this function has been assigned to Professor Harry Hummels, now professor in Social Entrepreneurship at the University School of Economics. Additionally, Utrecht University is active on various levels of social entrepreneurship. This is further illustrated by the creation of a minor ‘social entrepreneurship’ available to bachelor students. In April 2016, supervised by the Nobel Peace Prize-winner Prof. Muhammed Yunus, the University organized the European Social Business Forum in collaboration with Grameen Creative Law.
Sneak preview during the Social Enterprise Day June 2nd 2016
On the second of June 2016 the third Social Enterprise Day took place in Utrecht (at TivoliVredenburg). This is the national seminar where everyone involved in social entrepreneurship in the Netherlands comes together. During this event the participants got a ‘sneak preview’ of the Vredenburg 40-building, and the response was overwhelmingly positive!
Sustainable design
The owner of the building, Utrecht municipality, will renovate the exterior of the building. The rental agreement concerning the building for the Social Impact Factory Utrecht LTD are nearly concluded. It is expecting to open its doors autumn of 2016. The new tenant will design and decorate the interior of the building, aiming to do so in a sustainable and social entrepreneurial way: using recycled materials, sustainable products, with people outside the traditional jobmarket, while simultaneously creating and offering internship opportunities.

Social entrepreneurship gives the world (and your company) a future
Welcome to the new environment
This article is a translated version of the article ‘Sociaal Ondernemerschap geeft toekomst aan de wereld-en je eigen bedrijf’ on Marketingfacts.nl
In a week where parts of the Netherlands and the rest of Europe we’re (literally) flooded and the weatherman Gerrit Hiemstra welcomed us to the ‘new environment’, it is not strange that we are looking to organizations that aim for sustainability and a better world. The NPO 3-tv show Keuringsdienst van Waarde spends some time every Thursday discussing the future of our food. Meat, fish, vegetables or insects; what will we eat in 50 years? I attended the Social Entrepeneurship Day in Utrecht and it soon became apparent that it is indeed possible to do something good for the world, while simultaneously having commercial motivations.
The central theme at this year’s Social Entrepeneurship Day was ‘building bridges’. The event was opened by Daan Weddepohl, founder of Peerby, a website that makes it possible to borrow stuff from people in your neighborhood. In this way Peerby tries to provide an alternative to the consumer culture, while simultaneously connecting people in the neighborhood. Weddepohl claims that “anything that can be shared, will be shared.”
I doubted whether Peerby’s model, which is based on sharing, was compatible with its newest model, Peerby GO, which focuses on the renting out of stuff to your neighbors. However, during his presentation, Weddepohl convinced me that this is, indeed, reconcilable. His vision and dream is that products will, in the (near) future, be valued based on their performance. This provides incentives for producers to make products that can be repaired, have longevity and can be easily recycled.
It is important to forge a bridge between the social and commercial organizations. Where, on the one hand, Airbnb seems to be going strong, Couchsurfing seems to be losing. This shows that the strongest business models always win, according to Weddepohl. This implies that one has to look for combinations of social and commercial activities.
B-corp?
Peerby is a B-corp, a concept that was often discussed throughout the day. A certified ‘B-Corporation’ implies that it is a new corporate form where they use their power to solve social and environmental issues. The ‘B Corp’ certification has the same standing for sustainable companies as the fair trade label has for coffee.
Every company has to go through a rigorous assessment procedure where they will determine the sustainability, social engagement and performance of the firm. The ‘B’ stands for ‘benefit’. In more than 30 out of the 50 US states this is an official legal entity, and in Italy a proposal has been submitted to give the label ‘B-Corp’ this special legal status.
With regards to ‘B-corps’ the Netherlands has always been a frontrunner in Europe: mid-2012 about half of Europe’s B-corps were located in the Netherlands, such as Tony Chocolonely, Triodos Bank, SnappCar, Seats2meet and Dopper. This trend is now catching on throughout other European countries.
Utrecht as the beating heart of social entrepreneurship
This day was also dedicated in part to the launch of the Social Impact Factory Utrecht, which will open its doors around autumn this year. The building situated on Vredenburg 40 (also referred to as ‘Staffhorstpand’), encompasses about 2.000m2, will function as a work-, meeting and serendipity hotspot for social entrepreneurs such as independent professionals, startups, businesses and organizations.
Just do it
Additionally there were numerous inspirational stories from established social entrepreneurs, such as Brouwerij de Prael. This brewery provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities, that are incapable of finding jobs elsewhere. This means the brewery has a strong social function as well. Their beautiful tasting room is packed every evening, so if you happen to be in the neighborhood be sure to check it out!
Max Wohlgemuth Kitslaar of Life is out there starting his journey in 2015 and drove from Chili to New York on his 40-year old Moto Guzzi. On his journey he visited 37 companies that work to create a better world. Now that he’s back he wants to spread the message that change towards a more social and sustainable world starts with yourself. During his journey he visited Laboratoria in Lima, an initiative that teaches girls from the slums to program and then helps them find jobs with big development projects in the neighborhood. This has been so successful so far that they received enough funding to educate another 800 girls!
Kitselaar is currently working on writing a new book, that (not so coincidentally) has been fully crowdfunded and has already been pre-sold in 9 countries. In this book he discusses innovative and lucrative social business models from South America. The book will be available in summer/autumn 2016 and by pre-ordering the book you contribute to his crowdfunding campaign!
Ask yourselves…
What does a day like this teach you? First of all that there is a lot going on within this topic, but also that it is becoming more and more accepted and appreciated for companies to profile themselves in a more socially conscious way. This positively affects consumer choice and marketing departments often choose to be more transparent in this regard. An organization can therefore legitimately ask itself the question whether it is positively contributing to this world. If that is the case, and you’re able to back it up rationally with strong evidence, then that is great- both for the world, but also for your business!

Is this new technology the end of Google?
A company called Consensys, in Brooklin, is promising to create a technology as innovative as internet itself. Now for you to understand it better I will start reminding you of how we got so far and where we are now.
Fifty years ago we would buy something from a company and wouldn’t have any saying in it. You get what you get and this is it, so that is from one big company to the masses. With the internet the masses got a saying. A tool to compare what is better and to actually know what those companies are making. It helped us on having a voice on what we want to get and companies have to adapt more and more to what the consumer wants. In that way we still get something from one big company, but we talk to them too.
Now what Consensys proposes is for communication, services and products be served from the masses to the masses. No big corporations in the middle. The name of this technology is Ethereum. It uses the same technology of blockchain, that allows people to exchange money without any banking in the middle, but for any kind of content, service or product. “But how exactly does it work?” you ask me. Well, let me give you a more concrete example.
Today you have Spotify, a great tool that lets you stream music and pay monthly fee for it. Now think about the artist. They spend a lot of time and money creating their music, and put it in Spotify. Then, when people start listening to their music, Spotify evaluates how popular their music is and how much they should earn. From that they take 30% for themselves and the artist only gets 70%. Take off the money he invested to make his music: studio rent, musicians, instruments, producer, recording. Only then you will have his profit, which will probably be divided. Now that doesn’t sound much of a good deal, right?
We know that the musicians definitely don’t feel like it is a good deal. And how do we know that? Well, they launched Tidal. The software owned by a tone of famous musicians was focused on giving the power to the musicians, so other music stream companies don’t take a big share of what are their efforts. The software backfired for two reasons, it doesn’t have a competitive price, although the lowest price is the same as Spotify, and they don’t have a free version, when their competition has. The second reason is a simply public relation reason, when it launched it sounded like a bunch o multimillionaire musicians complaining about not getting enough money.
This isn’t about the musicians that are already on top, is about the independent ones. At Ethereum those musicians can make their music available for the price they want and all the money goes to them. The same thing can be applied to Airbnb, Uber, Facebook or even Google. You can get a service and the full price you will pay will go to the people that are providing it. How the safety and licenses will work? We will find that out when time comes. What is a fact is that a tool like this offers infinity of possibilities.
It reminded me my talk with Jeroen Pliester, when he spoke about craftsmanship and how it will become bigger and bigger. Ethereum allows us to buy directly from people, not companies. Decentralized is the word of the moment. Just like the middle ages but with a much larger village.
