Hi there,

Yes, this title does mean that sadly another of my classes is closing. After 55 months teaching at the Wimbledon Guild my Thursday lunchtime class will be closing at the end of August. Its been a good run (most popular fitness classes, even in gyms, run for two years if theyre lucky) weve had some phenomenal classes and Ive met so many wonderful people through the Guild, but all good things must come to an end and funding changes mean services have to change.

If you usually come to the Guild please remember that I have many other lovely Zumba Gold classes, just check out the full schedule at the bottom of the page for details and you are more than welcome in any of the classes. All of my classes are extremely friendly and it might be a chance to make some new friends. We often stop for a drink or lunch after class on Mondays and Tuesdays at Wimbledon Park Hall I finish at 1:45pm both days.

Unfortunately as my Saturday morning class has also been extremely quiet over the last two weeks Ive decided to put this on hold until 10th September - I also have family birthdays the next couple of weekends and with the Bank Holiday itll give me a chance to rest up my ankle which is feeling a little bit sore.

All the other classes are running as normal apart from Bank Holiday Monday so hope to see you in class!

Free Books!

Although there are less classes, there are more books! Not just my new book which Im launching tomorrow in the park, but also many short location guides which I am finally publishing as individual escapes - and many of these are FREE!!!

My quick guides to Barcelona, Marrakech, Croatia and China - Hong Kong, Yangshuo, Shanghai, Huangshan and Beijing are all available now as free eBooks on Kindle, iTunes and other eBook readers.

Other guides which are available from 99p are Chianciano Terme in Tuscany, Paris with Kids, Iceland, the New Forest, the Lake District, New York, spas and escapes in England and Wales, Bath Spa, London spas, Florida (Orlando, Clearwater, Naples, Key Largo and Vero Beach) and those locations as separate eBooks, plus a very special one about swimming with wild manatees (which should be out this week!)

When I first started Pearl Escapes it was my goal to share exactly what you needed to know to book a fabulous escape in each location - just one hotel, restaurant, spa, massage so that if you were confused or burnt out it would be easy to follow. Its only taken me six years for the penny to drop that this is what we do with Zumba, just three basic moves each song to make it easy to follow! How often do we miss the thing that is staring us right in the face!?

I hope you check out the books and please do let me know what you think (please, please write reviews and give the books some stars on the site where you download the books!) as, like teaching, Ill only get better with feedback!

Book Launch Picnic - Wednesday 17th August

Dont forget that tomorrow Ill be having a book launch party picnic on Wednesday 17th August 10-11am in Morden Hall Park Rose Garden. Ill talk a little about the book and you can check it out (I wont have additional copies, but if you want you can order yours in advance and bring your copy along to be signed - or ask me about ordering one for you). They take about a week as theyre made to order.

You can bring your own food and drink and picnic blanket, or theres the National Trust cafe too - coffees pretty good and cheese scones are awesome. Oh and well decamp there if its wet.

And if you cant make it (or even if you can) Ill be doing talks to promote the book so if you have an event, a group or just know another nice park we can hang out in - just give me a holler.

Hello,

Sorry this newsletter/blog is a bit late. I got a touch of the I Cant Do Its last week. It started for a good reason - I had a call on Thursday about something possibly exciting for my Zumba classes and was waiting to get more information, but then I just got really tired on Friday and had to take a really, really long nap (funnily enough I always seem to get extremely tired or a bit of a cold when my VAT return is due...)

These are the kind of excuses Ive also been making about publishing my individual escape guides - Id prepared 11 ready to go, but somehow I just couldnt seem to upload them. So I sat down on Saturday morning and realised I was self-sabotaging - because, guess what, the first few very short guides Ive published are BEING DOWNLOADED... yes, and more people are buying my books, which was the plan. I should have been ecstatic, following up with more... but I got scared and started to run away from that success. And I did a very good job of hiding it from myself.

I see it all the time in classes, people start to lose weight, start to get all the moves and then... excuses, problems, reasons to not come along. Because the fear of success is the same as the fear of failure, because our ego just wants us to stay exactly where we are doing what were doing, because great success is just as far out of our comfort zone as great failure. Its... dan dan dan... CHANGE. And suddenly we desperately need a nap.

I also see it with a lot of instructors who say Oh, I really wish I had my own classes. At the Instructor Academy a lot of people were saying Oh, Im not a proper instructor, I only teach one class a week. When I started I had kind of already burned my bridges, but probably the best thing for getting started was my attitude and something my brother in law said. You have to do 10,000 hours of something to become a master. So I wasnt planning incredible success, I was just practising, one class, two classes, up to ridiculous (and far too many) classes per week and somewhere along the line as don Miguel Ruiz (The Four Agreements) says Practice makes the master.

(The great thing about publishing the books is that once theyre published theyre there forever... whereas when you have twelve classes a week you have to teach them... every week.)

Which brings me back to the I Cant Do It. The problem when we say I Cant Do It, whether its doing a move, learning a choreography, setting up a class or writing or publishing a book, is that were telling ourselves I need to be able to walk before I can walk. Nobody can walk until they can walk. The baby picks itself up and tries over and over again and luckily it does this usually before it can talk, so it cant tell itself I cant walk. Otherwise it might never get there.

So what do we do when we Cant Do It?

Heres a few ideas.

Stop thinking. Going through the brain is like going through the big bouncer at the front of the club whos judging everyones outfits and body fat. Hes great when youve been there half a dozen times and knows your name, but otherwise you might be hanging out there all night (and never get in). Sneak in. Dont ask for permission from your brain, just do it anyway. Let your body do it. If my brain says I cant publish a book I say, okay, Ill just set up a project, download an ISBN, do a front cover, oh look, just one more button to press, and I can do it quickly before my brain can say Not tonight love, try again tomorrow. Whats a great way to distract the bouncer (the brain)? Guess what, according to ancient mystics its music, especially without lyrics you understand, so music in another language is PERFECT! (If I get stuck when Im writing I just put a full opera on on loop - suddenly I look up and Ive written a chapter or two without the bouncer part of my brain even seeing me!)

Physically following someone else is childs play. Children do it before they can speak, animals do it, and they do it mirroring, facing, just like we do in Zumba - thats what makes it such an easy game. Its easy, all you have to do is STOP LISTENING to the bouncer. He cant actually stop you, just intimidate you.

Just think of it as practice, dont judge your efforts, dont think about getting it right or wrong - sometimes you look better than me doing it your own way - sometimes Ill steal your move. As I said to someone else this week about a teaching technique, You have to be prepared to get it wrong 50% of the time if you want to be able to only get it wrong 20% of the time. You have to swing the bat a lot of times and miss many times before you start to connect with the ball most of the time (wow, thats a lot of times, like 10,000 yet?)

Use your brain... flip the switch and tell yourself I Can Do It.

But whatever happens, whether you get it or not, whether you do the move or not, whether you come to class, or set up a class, or publish a book or just do whatever it is you dream of (get on a plane, have a massage, swim with manatees, drive alone through Mexico, swim on a moonlit beach, fall in love) even the practice is perfect. We focus on the one moment, (hey, how do you like it, I came back around to the Olympics) the race, the event, the gold medal or not, but every moment of practice is part of it, the travel, the training, the failures and every moment is a moment of your life. Muhammad Ali famously said I hated every moment of training. Well, I dont want to hate my life, and every moment is a moment of my life, but there are moments of extreme frustration and fear and Ive been there with that move that just foxed me and took me weeks to get... and then for weeks afterwards every time I did that move, oh the joy! ...the feeling of success and happiness to have arrived! Or other things that I didnt get (like the ZJ or ZES jobs) and at first I thought, what a waste of time and effort, until I realised that the practice, the application was serving me or teaching me in another way.

So like I say, every moment of our practice is perfect, however long it takes us to finally see it (and make it easier on ourselves the next time!)

Book Launch Picnic - Wednesday 17th August

Dont forget that next week Ill be having a book launch party picnic on Wednesday 17th August 10-11am in Morden Hall Park Rose Garden. Hey you,

After my last real blog post/newsletter (you know the one where I told you that my new book was finally available online) I realised that making the book available as a paperback WAS possible, in exactly the same way that Ive been publishing my books for years - through Lulu. Id been put off by thinking that it would be very expensive and might not look any good but then I started thinking about Japan... When we were in Wakayama we really wanted to get a taxi to see Nachi Falls and also to drive through the mountains of the Kumano Kodo at sunrise (you dont see a lot from the train as it goes all the way around - and takes another couple of hours at least) but we had a problem... it was expensive. It wasnt actually the money that was the problem, it was our hotel concierge, he was really distressed that we would spend so much money You can take the train. he said. I really had to talk him into it. It took three phone calls. And Im so glad I did because we got to see the rising sun as we left, experience the magical shadowy mountains and arrive at Nachi Falls early enough to spend a lot of quality time there, and it is one of the most beautiful and inspiring places Ive ever visited. Also the journey back was a real drag, a long, long time on a bus through towns with no English signage and a long, long time on the train too, so Im glad we didnt have to do it twice.

So, yes, I uploaded the book to Lulu, ordered my proof copy and waited patiently. I thought I was either going to cry with joy or disappointment, but actually when I opened the package I felt something different - recognition. This was the book I had been working on, had in my head and now it was in my hands it felt, well, like it was meant to be.

And, although it will be pretty expensive when it finds its way to Amazon and other online booksellers, Ive set up a discount on Lulu, which together with their regular discounts (click this link to their home page to see current offer codes) means it currently costs around 30 for you to order the book and have it delivered - which was my target price in the first place! (Ill be honest, even if and when I can order a large print run, once it appears on Amazon with their mark up its still going to cost around 30.)

But Im so happy that its now live and out there. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted because I so wanted to see this book breathe. And I feel, for the first time in my life, like an artist. I take photos, rather than paint, and work it in with the words, but painting my walls at home this year in January perhaps was the key - breaking through that voice in my head that said Im the non-artistic one in the family. just like I finally broke through that voice telling me I couldnt publish this book print on demand. Isnt it crazy how the biggest obstacles in our lives are so often just in our heads?

So to celebrate Ill be having a book launch party picnic on Wednesday 17th August 10-11am in Morden Hall Park Rose Garden. Ill talk a little about the book and you can check it out (I wont have additional copies, but if you want you can order yours in advance and bring your copy along to be signed - or ask me about ordering one for you). They take about a week as they are made to order, now doesnt that make you feel special?

You can bring your own food and drink and picnic blanket, or theres the National Trust cafe too - coffees pretty good and cheese scones are awesome. Oh and well decamp there if its wet.

And if you cant make it (or even if you can) Ill be doing talks to promote the book so if you have an event, a group or just know another nice park we can hang out in - just give me a holler.

Hi guys,

Its funny how many songs talk about waking up (obviously Wake Up Everybody) well, as you know Ive been working on a book all about waking up; it sounds a bit pretentious to say my spiritual awakening and to be honest it was more of an all over experience; mind, body and spirit but its been a massive shift in my life and owning it, writing all about it has been an important step in keeping myself awake and not slipping back into old habits, particularly old ways of thinking (although when you read the book or even a few of my blogs youll see that Ive already done exactly that on occasion).

Ive covered it in WARNING labels, because whereas I always try to keep my blog and website pre-watershed because it is public, I felt the need for some strong language and to share some radical ideas in the book. There is swearing, a lot of it, and a lot of talking about some pretty dark areas of my life. It may not be for you (dont worry I wont be offended if you tell me that or just say Oh the cover looks nice.) I know from the conversations I am having with people at the moment that this is something that will help some people, but like some of my tracks it may also be the kind of thing you look at and then look at me like What on earth was that?. Its okay if its not for you.

Anyway Ive released it for now as an exclusive digital book on Lulu so you can preview and download it in full colour, if you think it might be your cup of tea (mmmmm... cup of tea). (Am working out in the wild again, Ive finished my Thermos of coffee, so might be time to find a little cafe, get some tea and share this with you online.)

Hi guys,

Unfortunately Monday nights have been a bit quiet lately so I am cancelling the class for the summer.

If you come along to Tuesday lunchtimes Zumba Gold class then make sure you come along this week, as this class was also quiet last week so I may merge it with Mondays for the summer like we did last year! Business as usual for now on Tuesdays.

Oh and the bucket is now gone - the roof is fixed!!

Believe and Instructor Academy - wow!

Well I could go on for ages (and have been doing in class) but I got what I needed from the day, a huge amount of inspiration and remembering what Zumba is all about - connecting with each other, inspiring each other and realising that our faith and belief can be so much more powerful than our fear. 6 years of Zumba and my life is unrecognisable, from an extremely unfit and unhappy girl in a suit and a life sapping job and industry I am now someone who connects with life from the deepest part of me everyday, I have met and had so many experiences with so many incredible people (thats you by the way) and travelled so far and wide... Thank you Beto and thank you Zumba!

Hi guys,

Man - what a storm last night! I really hope you guys are all alright and not having too many hassles with the weather and travel! There is no class this morning as Wimbledon Guild is a polling station but I will (hopefully) be teaching tonight at Wimbledon Park Hall.

I say hopefully as the last couple of months have seen just an extraordinary chain of events, from the Acacia Centre closing, no security to open up and flooding at Vestry Hall, elections and double bookings at Wimbledon Guild and this week another leak at Wimbledon Park Hall (which we are working around!) I know also that so many of you coming to classes have had so much going on and numbers have been very erratic.

Anyway, Ive decided to sell my flat (if anyones looking for a studio in South Wimbledon/Colliers Wood give me a shout!) and also everything I have in stock to help my cashflow. Dont worry Im still planning to continue classes but from a rented base, maybe a little AirBnB so Im not paying when Im away, moving further out or even investigating a bit of house sitting (let me know if you need a house sitter!) Theres also that camper van idea ;)

Also, if you are looking for anything Zumba that is not on the list I will be going to the Instructor Academy next Saturday so can pick up specials if you give me details of what you want (however I may not be able to return these). If not I can also order online the Monday after that - 4th July and everything will be returnable but with postage costs for returns.

If you would like a small sweat towel, water bottle or bag these are 3 (or 2 with any other purchase!) All offers entertained!

Trousers

Purple Cargos - L - 30 (Normally 46.80) or best offer!

Red Cargos - M - 30 (Normally 46.80) or best offer!

Sweatshirts

Black asymmetric zip-up hoody - S (but fits M) - 15

Black hoody - S - 10

T-shirts

Black Lean Mean Dancing Machine (small print) - XS - 5

Grey Est. 2001 - XXL - 7.50

Zumba Fitness CD (last one!) - 3

Pearl Escapes shoulder bag - normally 3 (2 with other purchase)

Small sweat towel - normally 3 (2 with other purchase)

Water bottle - normally 3 (2 with other purchase)

All offers entertained!

Believe - Saturday 2nd July 8pm Troxy, near Limehouse

The party is at Troxy nightclub, tickets 35 in advance (there are some double and ten pack tickets but these may have already sold out) and 40 on the door (if there is space). The full day is just for instructors (Ill be going up early), and then doors should open at 7pm for party ticket holders only. But remember this is a big event and we are often on Colombian time, so double check. You can buy directly from Maloca UK http://www.malocauk.com/shop/?category=BELIEVE

Hi guys,

So its been the strangest week. A lot of you in class know Ive been under the weather and had a lot of family stuff going on, so its really taken me until today to begin to appreciate the events of Sunday night - the shooting in Orlando.

Ive spent a lot of time in Orlando, three years of Conventions. Every year I went to an Orlando club for the after party, one of those years it was my first date with my beloved who still lives nearby.

Today I found out via Facebook that two of the people shot in the club were Zumba Instructors. Both were called Angel. Sadly one died. The other, well I watched a beautiful video with him from the hospital where he said he was still looking forward to Convention, hoped hed be able to walk by then and if not hed be doing something even if it wasnt jumping.

I dont know what Convention will be like this year, its always emotional, I cant imagine how those Instructors will feel, but I do know that there is such an incredibly positive and beautiful energy to Convention that it will help heal Angel, Orlando, the Zumba Instructor Community, the US and the world.

My heart goes out to all the people who were affected, injured and killed and to their families, friends and community.

When things are hard it is easy to see nothing but darkness, to let the weight of it drag us down, but we must also see the light. See the love that brings people together, the support we give to one another in the dark times, even the terrible sadness of losing a loved one is just a reflection of the incredible joy their being in our life has brought us. Love will always win. I know this because my Facebook is full of messages of love and condolence, of support and prayer. I know this because this tragedy means that people will reach out to the person they havent spoken to in a while, theyll remember to say I love you when they say goodbye, theyll pick up the phone and say Are you okay? And many, many people will look again at what they thought were their differences and realise that those differences are nothing, were all just human beings, were never just a label.

Weekly Newsletter - Thank You For The Avoid The Saggy Middle Party

Hi guys,

Just wanted to say a special Thank You to the people who came along to my Avoid The Saggy Middle coffee party at Liqui Liqui.

You know, as I touched on last week, doing a Kickstarter for my new book was a challenging experience and in some ways it took me outside the book, it certainly felt like I was trying to sell it. Its a bit like trying to sell a Zumba class with a flyer or a poster and stressing about how I look or all the details. Whereas when were in class and the music is playing its just so natural.

And thats how the coffee party felt to me - talking about what was inside, feeling like I was in the heart of the book, trying to show the pictures - even though the sun did not want to help! It was wonderful to be inside the book again.

So yeah, the Kickstarter hasnt gone particularly well, and with 48 hours to go it probably wont be successful, but it has definitely been a growth opportunity for me. Most of all I want to say thank you to all of you who have supported and backed the project. If the project is unsuccessful your credit cards will not be charged, so it hasnt cost you anything - and although you wont get a reward you will get my everlasting appreciation!

Believe - Saturday 2nd July 8pm Troxy, near Limehouse

Yes, we had another problem with the Vestry Hall this week - flooding! So unfortunately Tuesday night classes were cancelled, anyway in a slightly odd attempt to make it up to you Ive decided to attend Believe so that should any of you want to come along we can organise travel back together if you like.

The party is at Troxy nightclub, tickets 35 in advance (there are some double and ten pack tickets but these may have already sold out) and 40 on the door (if there is space). The day is just for instructors (Ill be going up early), and then doors should open at 7pm for party ticket holders only. Weekly Newsletter - I Thought I Knew What It Was To Be Vulnerable

Hi guys,

I thought I knew what it was to be vulnerable... because everything I experienced on my trip has made me so much stronger, so much less afraid of what people think, I was just excited, eager to launch the Kickstarter. Then I did it... I pushed the button, sent out my email to my lovely newsletter group and took my pre-written email and went to send it to my Friends (you know, actual Friends, people I know, not random persons) and it hit me.

I am asking for help. I am being vulnerable. This is a scary feeling. What if it doesnt work? What if I look like a failure? What if people laugh at me?

I mean I wrote a whole chapter on Asking For Help, I read a book about it over the weekend, if you count the Brene Brown books I read four. I understand. I stand up in front of people every day, I ask them to come to class every day, I stand out in front of the tube station and I hand out flyers. What is going on?

Its been the best part too - the emails from friends, saying theyll support me, saying they think its brave, that its inspiring, that its awesome to do this. Messages from people saying they are proud of me for what I said on the video.

I wept when someone donated 100 to put a photo in the book.

I havent had one negative comment. Even people who I didnt think would be into it have been nice. So whats my problem?

Im still struggling with the age old problem. Show up, be myself and risk rejection, or try to play be nice, what people want, what people expect of me, because success is so important. What if it goes wrong?

I left the nice safe place I was in, only to realise...

...there is really no nice safe place, there is no one to stand behind when you are a teacher, a writer, a musician, an artist, a chef - no matter how many layers or systems or gyms or publishing companies or music labels or galleries or restaurants or massive chains there are. In the moment where we meet there is intense vulnerability. I see you, you see me. And we hope we all go home happy, inspired, well fed, but sometimes we go home disturbed, disquieted, challenged, perturbed, and in the worst case judged and found wanting.

We say in Zumba, be yourself and let your class find you - you cant please everyone, Seth Godin (the ultimate marketeer) would say let your tribe find you. And if the right people dont find you, or enough of the right people dont find you where you are, you have to get up and go and move to another part of the forest (now thats from Winnie the Pooh).

If it doesnt work, so what? I have no idea what happens next, its exciting, its scary and ultimately I believe that whatever happens next will be the right thing for me. There are so many times I thought I wanted something so badly only to look back now and say, well Im so glad I didnt get that job, end up with that guy...

Its all happening perfectly, if it feels right to buy the book, to put your picture in it, to come to the launch party (if there is a launch party) thatd be awesome - but its like my classes, I dont want you to come if its not the right thing for you. When I look across and see you and you see me, its that magic, being in the right place at the right time, to make that connection, to have that particular experience, whatever it is for you. I hope to see you there.

(If you want to come and support me please do come along to my Kickstarter Avoid The Saggy Middle coffee party next Wednesday - hugs gratefully received! And in class too!)

Oh this is the Thank You card you can choose as a reward - you get a signed card sent out to you anywhere in the UK for 10 and anywhere in the world for 16. (Signed by me of course!)
