Dearly beloved,

(No, Step 1 - Show Up is not a new street dance movie!)

I so often use examples from Zumba as my teaching practice, and life practice, and as I was talking about the talk I was planning to give this last Wednesday I told my coach Well, the most difficult part is just showing up.

Its not really, the difficult part is all the work you do and training and reading and practice to be ready to call yourself a Zumba Instructor, or Publishing Consultant, or Life Coach or Author in the first place, but, because youve done all that, once youre in the room (assuming that you have actually learned your stuff and prepared and sweat and trained...) it just kind of flows out of you. Its a bit like the book I wrote; Meditation for Angry People, which I think was my fastest first draft ever - 8 hours - yes, I thought there was something wrong with me, but Id been researching and reading and thinking and practicing and taking long walks thinking about anger... so when I sat down to write the book it all just flowed out. The hardest part was sitting down to write the book and committing to write for at least one hour a day - it ended up being about two hours and four days... I was quite shocked and, until I met a coach boasting that he could get you to write your books in 8 hours, thought I was quite a weirdo. (That whole being scared of our light, our superpowers thing...)

Show up. It may or may not be the hardest step, but nothing happens without it.

So I got to thinking about this in relation to my books, and, after spending so much time these last few weeks publicising both the beach retreat and talk I was doing I thought - why arent I working so hard on publicising my books, on making sure that they show up?

I hate selling,
Ive never been much good at advertising,
I dont understand PR or publicity.
...but the more I work as a coach for others, the more I see them doing this to themselves, the more I cant hide from my own shyness.

How can you go to Zumba Convention by yourself? was something I was always asked, and how could I stand up in front of so many people, often in quite a revealing outfit and shimmy (thats posh for shake it)? Because it was so obvious to me that its what I had to, it was the only way forward, the way to serve people and to progress. Anything else was clearly, for me, the equivalent of going back and hiding under the bed (which, of course, Ive had moments of wanting to do).

And I had to get used to sticking my face on a poster, I had to get used to doing photoshoots (ulp!) and realising I quite liked them, and being videoed and hearing my voice, I had to get used to selling myself, in the nicest possible way.

So right now (well, for at least another day,) I thought Id take the pedal off writing (oh yes, I finished the first draft of my new novel - the longest ever; 11 months) and before I go back into my comfort zone of writing, and publishing, and creating pretty covers...which were all once scary things (and sometimes still are) I thought, you know what... Im going to go master advertising. So be prepared to see my name and face in a lot of places if you venture onto Amazon (If you go down to the woods today...) because guess what?

Im showing up.

The Beach Retreat - Being The Storyteller

In September I am running my first beach retreat in The Witterings at the lovely West Wittering Beach House http://www.beachhse.co.uk/ which has been my retreat space on so many occasions when I've needed someone to take care of me. It's a wonderful mix of simple and luxury (as every good beach house should be), and the retreat also includes a fabulous breakfast.

This retreat is for those who want to get clarity on their stories. If you think it means that it's just for writers, or people who label themselves as writers, you'd be wrong. Although I have been working primarily with authors, I'm really working with people making a shift - from one style of teaching to another, one style of writing to another, from teaching privately to making their work visible and available around the world. So a big part of what I do is to help people change their story, and I've been doing it for myself for a long time:-

Because I told myself

"I'm a screenwriter, but I could never write a novel." Now I'm working on my second novel.

"I'm just a fiction writer." I've since published dozens of non-fiction titles, and become an Amazon Best Selling Author in many Self-Help and Travel categories.

"I'm a writer, but I do love taking snaps." When I started playing with photos in my work I was suddenly getting compliments from professional photographers as well as launching a busy Instagram account and publishing a huge photographic series of books (one of which is an Amazon Best Seller).

"I could never leave London, I could never leave England for long." And yet I've left "home" behind and found hundreds of homes around the world, and travelled for months to some of the remotest places you can imagine. It was in me all along.

I've gone from being unable to walk unaided to teaching Zumba Fitness and dancing on stage with the world's best, I've gone from writing screenplays to poetry, novels, self-help books, travel guides, and I'm not done yet. I've sold my photography, which I guess also makes me a professional photographer and a professional cinematographer having distributed my own feature film internationally I quit my well-paid day job to start Pearl Escapes in the middle of the last recession I've gone from being afraid to leave my flat to waking up in the morning and booking a flight to Johannesburg with no accommodation or real plan (and it was one of the best things I ever did).

This retreat is for you if you're feeing grumpy about your life, if you know there is something not true in what you're telling yourself. If you're grumpy about your work and you know there is more for you, either in the way you create it or the way you share it. If you're thinking, 'Is this all there is?'

By the end of your retreat, you will have developed awareness of the stories you are telling, or being told, and you will be free to move in any direction in your art and in your life by taking the energy that you're using now to hold yourself back and, instead, using that energy to take your next step.

Dearly beloved,

As a good friend of mine said recently, "You have a plan and then life happens" and that's kind of been my last week, but in having to stop and look around, to reassess, I've finally looked down and around with fresh eyes and seen what's under my nose. In the story of "The Alchemist" the narrator has to go all the way around the world and let go of everything before finding that the treasure he sought was right there all along. But without that journey he wouldn't have seen the wonders of the world.

I always remember finding a copy of Paulo Coehlo's "The Pilgrimage" in a hotel on Finisterre beach when I had finished walking the Camino de Santiago. Although the Catholic pilgrimage ends in Santiago de Compostela, the ancient pilgrimage goes on, some say to Finisterre, others to Muxia and the ancient chapel there. For me the ending was finally getting into the sea. All along I had been saying to other pilgrims, "If you want to feel alive get into the sea." It had been an incredibly hard summer and autumn for me, it was December and it was Costa del Morte (the Coast of Death in Spain) but I got in, I felt alive and I came back to myself.

On Monday as I looked around the beach where I live, I realised that for me what I really miss, what I really want to do, is not to get into the sea, but to start group coaching again, what I really want to do is to bring a group of people together and see the magic that happens when they have the courage to go beyond their comfort zone, to walk into the room, or in this case, out onto the beach and feel alive. What I really want to do is to share what I've learned from the teachers I've studied with. Just like when I taught my salsa master class a few years ago, together we can master the difficult, the impossible, by going back to the beginning, to the basics and practicing together.

In September I am running my first beach retreat in The Witterings at the lovely West Wittering Beach House http://www.beachhse.co.uk/ which has been my retreat space on so many occasions when I've needed someone to take care of me. Do I need to bring my swimming costume?

Absolutely.

Beach towel and other beach stuff?

May be useful!

Can I go paddle boarding?

Yes, there's a great hire place right on the beach, who will also look after your gear and let you take a hot shower afterwards.

https://www.2xs.co.uk/club/hire/

Do I have to?

No, not at all, it can be quite fun to sit and watch.

Will there be Zumba?

Anything is possible, but it will be optional (and it may just be dancing on shifting sands on the beach).

Do I have to get in the sea?

No. But you might do. Depends on the weather.

What activities will there be?

Again, it depends on the weather, but it could include watching sunset, sunrise, star-gazing and other beach activities.

Can I extend my stay and book one to one time with you before or after the retreat?

Absolutely, just message me to arrange.

Any other questions?

Message me at pearl@pearlescapes.co.uk

See you at The Beach House.

Lots of love, Pearl

Exposing Weakness

Hello all my beloved friends,

One of the most difficult things about coaching is pointing out your clients weaknesses, its also probably the most valuable. And when you see and work with other peoples weaknesses, it cant help but show up your own, which is one of the most precious, sacred and downright painful parts of the process, whether its professional coaching or simple interactions with others.

When I first started doing Zumba I put my back out. When I saw my physio I was so worried he was going to say You cant do it any more, but he told me instead When you strengthen your core muscles you can do anything you want, but if you try to do all this without that core strength and without engaging those core muscles, you are going to keep injuring yourself over and over again - in short you wont be able to do anything. It was a very painful rehab, although honestly a lot more predictable than my ankle, which is strained again. (Luckily I have the basic exercises that my physio prescribed for my ankle, so Im going to start rehabbing it again, but doing the basic exercises every day, first).

In life, as we move forward, so often we find ourselves making the same mistakes again, injuring ourselves in the same way, learning the same lessons, and so often life seems to have us repeat our mistakes until we can finally grow out of them. But in the meantime it can be so difficult to keep coming around to the same pain points, to keep feeling that there is something wrong with us, but perhaps this is so that we can finally learn our answers, our solutions, our own ways to make sure that we become stronger, and even help others to deal with these challenges.

Sometimes it is the need to speak out about problems that seems like a weakness, Why cant you just be quiet?

Of course there is a time for silence, and for letting people make their own mistakes without pointing them out or calling them out. There is a time for peace, and a time for looking out and enjoying how beautiful life is and all the good things we have to enjoy in our lives.

But there are also things we must say, things we must share, things we feel passionately we need to warn others about. And perhaps part of our challenge as coaches and just human beings is knowing when is the right time (timing is everything).

Can we explain compassionately what is wrong, rather than being caught in a culture of complaining?

Can we smile and laugh with someone when they make a mistake and realise it for themselves?

Can we sit in silence and wait to be asked for our advice, to be given permission to teach, rather than assuming people need our opinions?

Can we stand up and speak for others when they do not have that power themselves - even if it makes us unpopular, and makes our lives harder?

The good news is, that as we learn those lessons and become experts, more and more people will ask for our opinions, will value our ability to hone in on the one or two details that hold them back, that ability to look at a situation and see the easy win, as well as the hard but necessary shifts we need to make progress.

Once we are seen as the expert or the executive, we get paid the big bucks to point out areas for improvement and whats holding things up, instead of, as one friend was told when working at an entry level job, Youre not paid to think. We get respect and gratitude when we can give someone the simple exercises to get their core strong (whether thats a theoretical or practical core) and finally move out of pain or suffering (physical, emotional or mental).

But the most important aspect of all this work is that we can apply it to ourselves, we can see our own weaknesses, or finally realise that what we have been taught is a weakness is, when used properly, in the right situation, a strength or a super power, and as called to do, we can, as the physician was told, heal thyself.

In the words of one of my greatest teachers, you can finally teach what you need.

If youd like to come along to my talk at Rume2 in Chichester Wednesday 14th August 1-2pm on The Power of Self-Publishing just email hello@rume2.co.uk to book your free ticket.

Lots of love, Pearl x

Hide Like A Leopard

Hello all my beloved friends,

This phrase has been going around my head since last week, and it was never more appropriate than yesterday in the heat, where the only thing for me to do was to lie down in the shade, in the woods and drink lots of water. Sometimes hiding out is the wisest thing we can do.

But the week before I was thinking of my decision in South Africa, when I realised how much I had been afraid to stand out and be seen, the decision of No More Hiding. And yet, Ive been hiding a lot, in one of my new roles as a carer, and Ive been doing it extremely well - except instead of hiding up in a tree Im hiding up in a room to stay out of the way of other carers when theyre on duty. Its a bit like a story I heard of a man who worked from home, but every day pretended to leave and go to work so that his children wouldnt follow him to his study.

All of these different concepts rolled into my head - the hiding that we do out of fear of success, the hiding we do behind others, the hiding our work so that we dont get judged, the hiding by not doing at all, and I wrote a long blog about it, but, as I wandered around getting supplies the day before the real heat hit, it struck me that perhaps instead of hiding like a mouse as I was thinking of earlier times, if I look at my actions and honour everything that was going on, for me and in the world around me, I was really always hiding like a leopard.

Fear of Success

As we confront any fear of success there is a price to pay, whether its just the energy cost of the shaking knees and the sweaty palms. It takes it out of us, so, just as with fitness, we dont suddenly, overnight go from the Before to the After picture, it takes work, and one step at a time. We are going as fast as we can.

So, while we need to use everything around us to move forward, inspiration from others, sometimes even the lows of escaping a certain uncomfortable situation, we also need to have patience and compassion with ourselves. We are always hiding like a leopard, and we will always pounce at the perfect moment.

Hide Like A Leopard

And of course there is another meaning to this phrase - that beautiful skin coveted by so many, especially poachers. I do not want to spread fear, just wisdom, but as Ive learned from travelling, despite loving the world and wanting to serve the world, I dont walk around with my purse or my rucksack wide open, and so we also need to honour our gifts, and treat ourselves and what we have to offer with respect. (And respect those who dont want to be taught by us - or see our beautiful hide!)

Some people will always try to take advantage, and so, perhaps one of the reasons we hide, I hide, they hide, is to allow enough personal growth so that when we do come out into the open and say, sell a product or a service, that we do so with respect and honour on both sides - after all, every interaction we have with another is a sacred thing and it is important that our exchange of money or energy honours both sides.

We do not serve people fully when we allow them to take advantage of us.

Zumba News

I did a whole class on my dodgy ankle! And in a few minutes Im going to do another one!

This time Im doing the ZIN (Zumba Instructor) DVDs, so I get the worlds top instructors (and I dont feel bad about adapting the moves if my ankle gets tired!)

I am determined now to rehab my ankle, my back and get back to being 100% fit again. I know that Zumba has a lot of sides to it, but at this point Id also remind even the founders, that it is Zumba FITNESS, which means its not about sculpting a perfect body or even losing weight, it is about helping you (and me) to get fit for whatever challenges we are facing or want to take on - whether that is climbing a mountain (my original goal when I started Zumba in 2010) or just being able to sit in a chair without my back hurting.

Publishing News

I hope one of my clients wont mind me mentioning a really sweet email she sent me saying that she realised she could actually author a book - of course she could! A lot of the work that I do is getting things into a recognisable book format, and offering advice, but most people already have their book sitting on their computer, its really a question of editing, filling in a few gaps and asking a few more questions that they forgot to answer because it all seemed so obvious to them - just a little bit of reflection and perspective.

And a second Hooray this week for my wonderful client AM Hellberg Moberg aka Anna Maria Espster, who is now an Amazon Best Seller!

Although Boldly Into Darkness Go is really very sweet and not that racy (IMHO) it has still ranked as no. 75 on the Erotic Bisexual Fiction chart!

Follow her on Amazon or find her on Instagram... and, of course, please find, read and review her books online!

And I also have a new Best Seller! In the German charts!

This week my new book Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, The Cameron Highlands, Kuching, Sarawak, Borneo, Tanjung Jara and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo)
just missed out on the Australian Best Seller Chart, but hit the charts in Germany.

25th July 2019
German Kindle
#90 in Selbsthilfe zu Motivation (englischsprachig) (Self Help and Motivation, English Speaking)
#36 in Reiselektre zu Sdost-Asien (Travel to South East Asia)
#11 in Reiselektre zu Sdost-Asien (englischsprachig) (Travel to South East Asia, English Speaking)

I guess I really can call myself an international best selling author now?

Unfortunately I never made it to the Dispace launch party in Moorgate yesterday as the trains melted, but I will be doing a talk at Rume2 in Chichester Wednesday 14th August 1-2pm on The Power of Self-Publishing. Contact the Rume2 co-working space to book your free ticket.

Group Coaching

Hello all my beloved friends,

I did my first Zumba class in ages last night - as a student, not a teacher, and it made me remember so many things I learned in what is almost 9 years since I did my training (and I taught a few classes before I actually did my training - did not know what I was doing and the real instructor hadnt turned up,) and one of the most important was that we sometimes need that group energy - that union to help us move forward, and its given me the push I needed to say, yes, I am going to share a lot more with my friends (thats you) via blog and newsletter. Im not sure whether it would be best to do two separate newsletters - one for Zumba and Pearl Escapes type things and one for publishing stuff - and Id love it if you let me know what you prefer, but for now Im just going to add in a few headings, so you can skim right past anything that youre not interested in.

And please let me know your other news too! Because I respect your confidentiality PLEASE let me know if youd like me to share or not, and Ill also be posting about my clients releases, so please shout out to them - on social media, or back through me. This group thing is just as powerful as one to one coaching and this group, or as a Buddhist monk would call it, sangha, or as we in Zumba would call it - family, is so incredible, and if I can share half of the things you get up to, it will inspire everyone else!

Zumba News

Still got a dodgy ankle - strained my ligament last year and it has been the slowest recovery! I couldnt even get through the whole class as a student last night which makes me sad, but is also a great reality check that I need to focus on rehab and my health in general to get back to peak fitness. Its a coming!

I also got contacted last week by Go Sweat (anyone heard of them?) who want to put me on their books for corporate clients. Right now they really want me to post drop in classes, which I cant, (or I could for meditation and that sort of thing) but in September theyll be posting by arrangement classes and I might be up to it by then. (And yes, I probably could teach chair class... hmmm...)

(And if you want to know it was Georgie Overingtons class at the Chichester Racquet Club - such a lovely club and you dont need to be a member to do it. Wednesday 6:30-7:15pm. Only her third ever class - she is so much better than I was when I first started!)

Its Zumba Convention next week, which I sadly wont be attending, it would be wasted on me with this ankle, right, and sadly they wont be doing Zumba Cruise or Vacation next year - but Ill be keeping my eyes open for what next, and hoping to be able to do a training or maybe just a masterclass soon. There have been some great sessions in the UK, but Ive found out about them too late to join in! Selina Wedderburn and I have also been talking about doing an African masterclass - maybe in London or on the beach... I know all the good spots down here to stay if anyone is interested, and its only an hour or two from London!

Yeah, Zumba on the beach... let me just find out from Selina if shes prepared to risk sand in her speakers?!

Publishing News
Luckily I can do this with a dodgy ankle!

Hooray for my wonderful client AM Hellberg Moberg aka Anna Maria Espster, who has published not one, but two!! fiction books this summer. (I only worked on the short stories.)

Boldly Into Darkness Go

How Pat Got Her Five Cats

Anna Maria is an incredibly experienced travel writer (much more than me) and is fluent in several languages (Im so glad I didnt know all that when I started working on her book)! This is the review (completely impartial) that I wrote of Boldly Into Darkness Go as one of her first readers. You can Follow her on Amazon or find her on Instagram... and, of course, please find, read and review her books online!

"The short story is notoriously difficult to master, many prize-winning novelists have tried and failed to conquer it, but in this collection AM Hellberg Moberg succeeds. Each story has a unique reward, whether it is in making you laugh out loud, think twice or just feel the pure emotion of her truthful coming of age stories. What I loved is that the author doesn't write for one stereotypical reader, but for the whole world; the young old person, the teenager with an old soul, the straight and gay, the innocent and the vengeful, the pragmatic and the mystical. The Northern Lights are a powerful theme within 'Boldly Into Darkness Go,' but if I can steal another piece of Scandinavian culture I would say that AM Hellberg Moberg has, in this collection, served up a delicious smorgasbord."

I also want to shout out to the incredible Joyce Chiu Broadbent who got me into working with other writers at the end of last year. She is one of my greatest teachers, and I hope she wont mind if I say that I learned a lot from working on her book:

From The Heart: Poems of Love and Loss

I learned that I actually prefer cream paper to white, that hardbacks look lovely (and I can do a wraparound cover) and that even the most well balanced human being struggles when they become an author to have their name as big as it should be on the cover! (In stark contrast to business owners who, when you do any design work for them, always ask Can you make the logo bigger!) In fact, I think many people hide behind their logo and business - something my new novel is all about...

Ive also just started releasing all of my travel stories as incredibly short books... and, guess what, they hit the Best Seller lists immediately! I even got a new tick/label on Amazon - #1 New Release for my Durban book. How cool is that! Id just updated my website Books and DVDs page - and now I have to do it again! because Venice is now a Best Seller.

These were my heights from the last week:-

10th July 2019
Durban
US paperback
#1 New Release in General South Africa Travel Books

Venice
US Kindle
#33 in Literary Travel
#54 in Venice Travel Guides
#34 in One-Hour Travel Short Reads

Japan
US paperback
#51 in Kyoto Travel Guides

Youll also see that I list whether its UK/US Kindle or paperback - because sometimes you can be ranking in one country, but not another. Im learning all the time!

What Ive really learned is that we usually try to give too much to our students/clients, (okay, like this email!) and KISS is better for 99% of the time. Less is more.

Ive also been running a stack of Giveaways - sadly you can only do this in the US, and its been interesting to see which books are most popular. My Giveaway of Meditation for Angry People went in the blink of an eye! So it will be interesting to see if theres a similar pick up in sales/downloads from that. (Just one more note for self publishers, this is a funny one as I made the book free via Lulu ages ago as a promotion, but then have changed the price back up and, over a year later, its still not the correct price! So dont try this on Lulu! Im going to have to pull it off the shelf and re-release to get the price right!)

Okay, Im going to try to do less now - but just to let you know, if you want to catch up with me, Ill be at the Dispace launch party next Thursday 25th July in Moorgate, and will be doing a talk at Rume2 in Chichester Wednesday 14th August 1-2pm on The Power of Self-Publishing. Contact either co-working space to book your free ticket.

Last week I decided it would be a really good idea to help out a friend. I knew I'd be helping myself out a bit as I was curious about what she was doing (running a stand and doing several talks), where she was doing it (The Best You Expo) and also I'd be staying over at her lovely flat near London (the couch).

To be honest, there were moments in the next few days when we both wondered "What are we doing?" and "Can we even do this?" usually when we were carrying and dragging half of the gear for her stand with an eco take away cup of coffee in one hand and trying to swipe our cards at the train station with the other. Who knew that one stand could take so much stuff? At the end we both agreed that if it had been raining we just wouldn't have managed it. It's not to say that there weren't others helping Hayley has a lot of friends and family but, in the year since she did this show last, Hayley has been working so hard and growing her business and her practice; her expertise and abilities so fast that we underestimated how much she had to share both in terms of the stuff and the amazing effect she and her stand would have on the people coming to the expo. We just did not stop for two days apart from when we sat down, bunked off or ran to get a sandwich out of sheer exhaustion and desperation.

The other thing is that both Hayley and I have had major personal challenges in the last few months, and at times like these, just like when I was teaching Zumba, it's hard to pick yourself up and stand up in front of an audience. Of course it's exactly when you do that that you realise how much you have to give, how your challenges can become a blessing as you reach out to others who are also suffering and struggling.

Hayley's stand was all about her Align to Love online course that she's launching next month. I'd already decided that it was the time for me to take some action on my love life as I feel whatever reasons I've been single up to now no longer exist, so when Hayley offered me the course for free as a Thank You for helping her out I grabbed it with both hands.

I've been friends with Hayley for around 10 years now - we met when we both worked in the City of London, but I actually met her at her leaving do, so its a wonder that we connected and became friends so quickly. We've done a lot of random things together weird video shoots, holidays, nights out, she's one of a very few friends who have travelled to meet my brother, sisters and Mum and although we're not the kind of friends who go out together every few weeks, its become clear that we are travelling on similar paths and at times we are exactly what we need and able to give each other support and understanding. If you had told me when we met that she'd be the person I reached out to in my lowest points, and that she would help me as much as she has I wouldn't have believed you.

It's funny because that's the kind of disbelief one chap had when he came to her stand. "Well how does it work?" he said.

"Were just friends." We said.

"But how does that work for you?"

We looked at each other and shrugged. "But why are you here?" he asked me.

"I've just come to help her out. We've been friends for years."

And he left still shaking his head. We looked at each other and shrugged. Hayley and I can teach a lot, her with her online course and me with my books, but maybe if he needs to understand our friendship he needs to go and do both.

Anyway, this isn't just a self congratulatory or sales newsletter (although here is a discount affiliate link and you'll have seen a few on your way down I'm more than happy to recommend Hayley I was doing it for two days solidly last week, and she's more than happy to pay me commission!) but about what Hayley did for me over those few days.

I know Hayley needed my help and I'm so happy to have been part of the event because I wasn't just helping out Hayley but also all the people around us there was so much love in our little corner of the expo (and I enjoyed it way, way more than last year!) but I was surprised by all the things I got out of it. Partly it was the connections I made with others, but it was also being able to talk completely honestly about the challenges I've been facing.

I've nailed it down to a big fear of success, which I'm tackling, and a nasty habit of hiding (something which Zumba has helped me to overcome) and I've progressed from completely freaking out the first time I saw one of my books on the Free Amazon Best-Seller chart to being frustrated that my books aren't higher on the Paid Amazon Best-Seller charts, but I am still awfully good at hiding, when I need to be much better at pearling (i.e. standing out and shining!) Talking about this with Hayley we decided that I should look at the talks at the expo and find ones that might really help (hanging out with Hayley was also a good start). As we sat on the train after setting up I read out each talk She looked down at the page when I'd finished. "What about this one?" she pointed at a talk about dun, dun, dun "Fear of Success". I had literally not seen it. I had looked at and read every single description but had ignored this.

I needed a coach. Luckily Hayley is a great coach. So we decided that I had to head to that talk.

I'd like to share with you what I learned. The coach actually taught what he called a "medi-healing" which is a combination of meditation and healing and is designed to create immediate results (unlike many of the coaches who are selling an expensive program). As I sat in the session I went down into all the reasons I hide, and hide my gifts. Some of them are clear to me and so obvious (like when Hayley pointed out the talk in the brochure), and yet the coach/healer spoke about our heritage, our instincts and our DNA our family habits as well as our personal habits. In the session I realised that much of the stuff I can talk about so freely now (as can Hayley and this coach) would have got us sentenced to death as witches not so long ago, and locked up in insane asylums even more recently. So many of the things I've learned around the world about healing have had to go underground in order to survive. So the fact that I exist, with my DNA, with my family's heritage of artists, healers, intuitive people, people who stand up and write about things they feel are important is a miracle. When I went to Scotland I discovered so much about my father's family and how they had to keep going into hiding to avoid the soldiers who wanted to catch them, kill them or even send them to the Southern States of the US as slaves. 12 times they had all their possessions stolen from their land It is a miracle that I am alive.

But my family, my DNA has survived because guess what, my family were all such good hiders for generations. And so the penny drops.

I've called what I do being a shaman (maybe a modern shaman) or a wise woman in the tradition of so many of the wise women of England who were sacrificed as witches, and I've felt strongly for years that one of my spirit animals is the leopard. After a very powerful dream I looked it up the leopard is the spirit animal of the shaman. And perhaps this is because, like my family, leopards are extremely good hiders.

So perhaps that's why I am a pearl, because it's time now for who I am and what I do to come out of the shadows. Because like any spiritual seeker I am looking for what we all seek; truth, because truth brings freedom and with it finally, peace.

(I know this is a really long post but a lot happened last week!)

Anyway, on the second day I got to sit in on Hayley's talk (I missed the first day because I was manning the stand, but luckily she's so good they asked her to do it twice). I didn't expect to get a lot out of it because it was a noisy venue and I was thinking about getting to the back and setting up the stuff for the end of the session but I tried to focus when she also did a meditation.

Although Hayley's course can work in a lot of different ways I was focused on romance and, as she walked us through the visualisation, what came up for me was something she had been talking about in her outline of her course. "Authentic Desire" - becoming honest about what we truly desire, not what we think we should have or even what we think is attainable or acceptable. "Authentic Desire." And in that moment I knew what I wanted to do and so I excused myself (after the talk and helping people) and went over to talk to a boy I liked.

Its not that I expected anything to happen with him, I just felt that it was what I truly wanted to do.

And later that night a boy sat next to me in the bar and started talking to me. Again, I don't expect anything from it he made it clear he was taken, but its nice to practice, to talk to boys, to flirt, to be a girl and have weird and interesting conversations and remember that there's a whole big world of love out there, of people who want to meet me (or you!), people who would think of us as godsends and maybe even celebrate the day we met. Anything, and everything is possible.

I'm really looking forward to following Hayley's course (I mean that was the result of like 20 minutes of listening to her can you imagine the result of doing the whole course) and I'm also doing a healing meditation daily based on some of her wisdom and some of mine and my heart is really happy to be sharing her with you (with the affiliate link - click here - you get 100 discount before Sunday 24th February this Sunday, and I get commission!) As well as my own result I sat with Hayley as she received email after email from women in the audience who had had powerful results from her guided meditation, and that's a rare and exceptional reaction.

https://soulpassion.thinkific.com/courses/align-to-love?ref=2cbd60

Hayley is a gift and a godsend and I really hope you go check out her website and make the most of her talents. She is open about how she has struggled with finding and enjoying love (and I was there for those years too!) so I really enjoy seeing her so happy in her relationship with someone who respects and supports her (and buys her Valentine's Day Marmite because he knows it will make her smile).

There are some incredible romances I have witnessed, most especially my grandparents (both sides) who showed me what love could look like, and sometimes I too question myself why didn't I meet the love of my life when I was 16 years old? But I know that I had to travel and understand healing and I had to travel alone, but I hope and pray that I might experience a lasting love like my grandparents'. I know that I am enough, I know that there are extraordinary and wonderful men out there, so I hope with a little help from Hayley I can finally find someone I want to share the rest of my journey, and the rest of my life with.

Lots of love,

Hugh Jackman is the Answer

So I ran off to the woods again to straighten out my head and feel my heart and just try to see which way was up (its amazing how often I end up here... here, here the place and here, here the emotional/mental/spiritual place). The first time I was here this year I did a lot of quiet meditation and felt very much like I was a little seed, waiting for the right moment to sprout. Its also something that seeds do - they get dropped in the ground and, before they start to grow, they need to adjust, move around, so that they can grow up (and not awkwardly down deeper into the earth - although thats exactly what the roots do). So in a way thats what Ive been doing - spinning around in my hole trying to figure out which bits of me need to grow up and which bits need to grow down and anchor me to the earth.

So whats it got to do with Hugh Jackman? Well I had a dream last night - not like that - stop it! Anyway Ive been thinking about him (dont we all), (again - stop it!) and he is what they call in the business of show a triple threat... he can act, dance and sing. (I also think about that chap who hosts Pointless because he acts, sings and hosts game shows - but I dont dream about him.) Anyway in figuring out what I do and how Im doing it I think there are actually three things that are really important to me, things that I can shine at - writing, dancing and speaking. In Hughs case (is it just me that wants to keep calling him Huge after that skit he did on The Late Late Show?) these are all types of performing, for me these are all types of teaching. What I mean is, as a dancer I dont think Ill be heading to the London stage, but I can offer a lot in gyms and to people who actually want to be able to follow what I do and do it themselves. Likewise with writing, its not about being fancy (okay, sometimes it gets a bit fancy) but about writing in a way that people can understand and follow.

So why is it so important for me to figure it out? Because sometimes I need the peace of heading into one space and letting go of the other. Its a bit like work life balance - sometimes going into work gives me the peace of knowing this is exactly where Im meant to be and what Im meant to be doing, other times the peace comes in being 100% with family, or friends, or just lying in a bath tub relaxing (and the woods, of course).

There is peace in knowing that we need to breathe in, breathe out and sometimes hold the breath - no one state is better than the other, but we really have to alternate or we can get stuck and hurt ourselves.

The difficulty comes in those moments of discomfort, the moments of knowing we are no longer in the right place, that we have spent too long at work, or too long with family, or too long just dealing with a crisis in one area that now the rest of the house has gone to pieces. Like waking up having stopped breathing in and out and we have to get back on it. It can be uncomfortable and painful and, in our stress we often want to run back to the very state we need to escape from... with the kids, back at work... because were so used to it that it feels safe.

So I guess then we need to think of Hugh Jackman... what havent we done that we do? What do we love and what makes us feel alive that weve put on hold or hidden away or hidden away from? What used to light us up but we ignore? Like Marie Kondos Spark Joy its opening up the cupboards and finding the pieces of ourselves that we put away for a moment, (when we took off our best outfits and put on the dirty old gear to deal with that bathroom crisis) and get shiny again. An image of the three girls in Friends pops into my head when they all put on their wedding dresses just to hang out in the apartment.

Go on, go put on your fanciest frock and see how it feels.
