So I got really annoyed a couple of weeks back about people doing stupid things during the coronavirus lockdown - as if being inconsiderate and selfish was the same thing as being free (its a bit like people confusing freedom of speech with saying the kind of thing you can get arrested for). And then I realised, they may not have been taught about freedom... so I bought the company. Well, no, that was Victor Kiam, what I did instead was to teach this series of videos about freedom.
I hope you like it.
I hope it helps.

Desperately seeking for something positive, a ray of light in this moment, I read an article this morning about a virologist in India, Ms Bhosale who has developed an effective low cost Covid-19 test, as imported tests can cost more than most workers make in a day.
The kit contains 100 tests, and costs 13, that's 13 pence per test. It also delivers results in two and a half hours.
With the UK government's antibody testing kits deemed to be virtually useless, and questions about whether those who have the virus are truly immune, it seems logical that the focus moves to both treatment for those ill with the disease and testing individuals so that they can be isolated and prevent spreading the virus.
So how about this? Can we see a moment, not too far away, when every home has a kit like this, a 13 kit that would last for over three months for one person? When taking a test is like brushing your teeth? When it's the last thing you do at night, and in the morning when you check the test, if it's positive you call in sick (and so does the rest of your household) without drama?
Its an approach that effectively wiped out the disease in a small Italian town, using just 3,000 tests one for each inhabitant. That's 30 of Ms Bhosale's kits, that's 390.
With a test that offers results in two and a half hours this could also become an effective way of testing travelers BEFORE they even get on a plane.
Better, quicker, cheaper tests open up all kinds of opportunities, including completely eradicating this virus, and the town called V has already shown it can be done.

Happy Easter - we are together in spirit

Easter was never really a big deal for me, (I did like the chocolate and the bank holidays) but in the last few years, when I went travelling, I started to feel and try to explore the significance of this time. I'm still working on it.
If I could share a few things that I think I've learned and which seem particularly appropriate, whether you come from a Christian background or not, whether you would call yourself a Christian or not, and whether this year you are working through a time where you would normally be observing a religious holiday, or are feeling that are on enforced rest, or if you are just missing being with your friends and family...
What I have learned in a very profound way over the last few years is that our connection to each other is much more than physical. When I travelled and was far away from and missing my family, there were moments of profound connection when they knew exactly what I was doing or feeling many hundred of miles away. And that sustains me now.
When I walked the Camino de Santiago through Spain, I had mystical experiences - particularly about Christianity, that I am still questioning, still studying, but what seemed so simple was how the path I trod, which was from Granada, right at the bottom of Spain, had been walked for thousands of years, and there was a respect along that path, a giving way, an honouring of The Way, and an open invitation to any person seeking healing. This ancient pilgrimage had been walked by pagans as well as Christians, and had been a place of peace for Catholics coming by sea from other countries, even when the territories were occupied by Muslim peoples. Whatever was going on in the world, pilgrims, whether they were Christian, Muslim, atheist, agnostic, Buddhist, Shinto... walked this path unmolested, out of respect for their desire to follow and seek spiritual truth. All the way to the church where it was said lay the body of St James - who had come to Spain to spread the word of Jesus.
So if I may be allowed to say two things, (before I start talking all about Zumba and other sessions next week) it would be these:-
Let us honour each other on this path, let us give each other space and be mindful and respectful that we should be able to walk where we need to and do what we need to, whether it is physical space or the space to find our own truth.
Let us remember the teachings of all of our great spiritual teachers at this time, and regardless of our personal spiritual beliefs be reminded of possibly the greatest lesson that Jesus taught;"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
If there is one thing we are learning (or I am learning) in the present moment, it is what it is to love and be loved. It is not to allow all behaviour, or be a doormat, it is not just hugging and kissing, and sometimes it seems extraordinarily complicated, but I believe that in its purest form, love is the simplest thing of all. We do not have to do anything or say anything; all we have to do is allow the love to come out of our hearts, without deed, without word, it is still love - and this never changes.
Lots of love, Pearl x
P.s. I also treated myself to a creme egg Easter egg!
ZIN Studio - launched yesterday!
Yes, the much awaited ZIN Studio launched yesterday and it is nothing like I expected!
It's being released in two stages - so it is not live classes just yet (I will continue with these on Zoom for the moment).
The first stage is actually going to be us uploading videos of our classes (a whole class - not like my YouTube videos) and then participants will have access to that class for up to 5 hours from when scheduled. Personally I think this is going to be very useful for my chair classes, as it will give any care homes or individuals the opportunity to do classes around their other activities - here's hoping. It also means that people (including you, of course,) will be able to go take a class whenever you choose.
There is still a lot for me to learn, and one downside of this is that the music choices will be even more restricted - but, so far, a lot of the music I have been using is available, so I'm not too worried.
I really hope this allows even more people to exercise and relax safely at home - and let's hope it all works.
(Another positive thing about this is that I will probably be able to use my video camera, rather than my webcam so the picture and sound quality should be much improved - I think we can all agree that will be a good thing!)
If you have any questions about this please let me know - and I am not going to give all the links for next week as I may be able to put some of these on ZIN Studio!
Please join my mailing list for the Zoom links. http://eepurl.com/U3C3T

Happy World Kidney Day!

My beloved friends,
Yes, today is WKD (nothing to do with the drink) and it's a day for people to learn about and pay attention to their kidneys, for a lot of reasons.
I also want to share this today because it's very important to me personally, and because there are two pieces of really good news in here:-
1) Today my brother is a happy, healthy recipient of a kidney transplant.
2) Almost everyone reading this can do something wonderful today and become a donor either by registering to be a donor after your death (saving your family from having to make that decision), giving something now (like blood) or taking a swab inside your cheek and going on the bone marrow donor list or, in extreme cases, considering being a donor for a loved one or even a stranger.
And I wanted to share something that a lot of people don't know about me. I used to have short hair as you can see from the cover of this, my first non-fiction book, which I published ten years ago in 2010. Oh yes, and I gave my brother a kidney.
This book was the first book written by a living kidney donor in the UK when it was released, and I had to finish it after writing in to a newspaper to correct some inaccuracies in a story about kidney donation. I was then inundated with emails asking for advice. Heart rending emails, many of them. I can't share some of the stories, but I would not have believed what came out of writing that letter, or this book. I am humbled by so many of the comments and messages I have received.
The thing is that what you see in dramas about kidney transplantation and dialysis is far from the truth, and it was important for me to share the truth back then, so important, because there was so much I didn't know going into it, and it took me to some of the highest highs and the lowest lows of my life.
I give this book away for free as an eBook and for those of you who are into publishing I'll let you into a secret the cheaper your book, the worse your reviews will be, and I've had some stinkers for this book. People say I've scared them and my reactions were immature, well, it is scary, and when you're dealing with basic bodily functions, it does get a bit immature.
But I want to share a few of the ones which have made me cry (in a good way) over the years, and Id say, if you are thinking of writing a book, giving a kidney or sharing something else marvellous, then trust your heart - when you give away in a spirit of love, life rushes in. There were so many tricky moments before, during and after, but to be given the opportunity to do something like this for someone you love is just such a privilege, such an honour.
When you give a kidney there are so many rules and regulations to make sure that you are doing it for the right reasons, not being pressured into it, not being paid, and then afterwards, it feels like people forget, that there's no honour left in it (like an old soldier whose sacrifice is sneered at), and then there is a comment, or a look, and you know it was never forgotten and you see it all again from another perspective and know you are part of a great miracle.

Having read your book this morning online, you have given me so much hope and the reason to keep going now. I cried loads and then I laughed out loud at some of the expressions you used. You are an inspiration to me already.
Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you. I have just read your book found it very informative and funny too - couldnt help sniggering at some bits!
Lots of love, Pearl x

Faith, Love and Toilet Rolls

My beloved friends,
What a to do?! I've found myself a tiny bit obsessed with the toilet roll situation over the last few days, but mainly with a question Why?
Why have people in the UK (and Australia, and probably other places I'm not aware of) decided that bulk buying toilet roll is the important thing to do in a crisis?
(Look away if you're not the camping type I'll let you know when you can come back out from behind your hands.)
It seems alien to me, and my family (mostly) because of those years of camping, those years of going out early in the morning for walks in the woods with my grandparents, when no one carried a pocket pack of tissues or hand wipes or sanitiser, because it was all just nature. You went behind a tree and you used a leaf (not a stinging nettle) and then you carried on the walk.
That's not to say that when I did the Camino de Santiago I didn't carry a toilet roll in my pocket (pilgrim trick squash it, take out the tube and it'll fit in a rucksack pocket), but I would never have used toilet paper if I was out in nature (and this is another big drama the number of people walking the Camino de Santiago, using toilet paper in nature and leaving it there). This is when I do a big sigh and cannot believe that these people haven't been trained better. It's better than when I go completely nuts on top of Mount Snowdon where people leave plastic bottles and other rubbish to blow around in the wind.
But this is it I was trained better. I was trained by my parents and grandparents to get out into nature, to walk in the woods when I got stressed, to take myself off to the beach, to leave only footprints and take only photographs. And to read the signs and watch the weather.
I also learned young that newspaper will suffice when you can't afford toilet roll.
And I learned in student houses that sometimes you just jump in the shower because no one else will buy loo roll.
It's basic. So basic. But my mother and grandmother used terry nappies when we were babies there was nothing disposable about that time. They used and reused, and boiled nappies in great big pots on the stove to sterilize them.
I really hope we don't have to do that.
(You can look back now.)
Nature is beautiful and messy and painful and uncomfortable sometimes, but it is what we have it is what we are, and it's most disturbing for a great deal of the population to realise that we belong to nature. When the big storms come, the winds and the rain, we can prepare, but we cannot control.
I read a psychologist's take on the toilet paper drama. It's actually not even about life, its about comfort. (Not the brand.) The desire to buy and stockpile toilet paper is in part due to the practical its easy to store and doesnt go out of date, and psychologically the big size of the packs makes it seem more important but above all its a symbol of first world comfort. It's a symbol of never having to use a leaf. (And if you need a laugh right now, check out the great film, "Hunt for the Wilderpeople".)
We are addicted to feeling comfortable, to not feeling anything other than safe.
Toilet roll will not save your life.
A pension fund will not save your life.
It gets to me too, this conversation. To be honest, what has put me off networking more than the risk of germs is constantly having to explain that I am being careful, not shaking hands, trying not to get too close, not because I will not survive it if I catch the virus, but because of all of my immune system depleted relatives.
When they say, "Oh, but its only old people and people with poor immune systems who have to worry."
And I sigh heavily again, and I say, "That's my family."
"Oh, oh well" and then they'll tell me of the story of someone in their family dying.
It is not helpful.
We cannot hold back the tide. I walk along the shore and remember King Canute (very famous in these parts) and how he tried to hold it back.
But of course we can take action, we can build a boat, we can learn to prepare (but not stockpile), and care (but not smother) our loved ones and, of course, share.
But most of all, I hope that what this crisis teaches us is to live. To look up from the red alerts, to not give up or act apathetically, but to find the middle ground of remembering what is important, what we are alive for.
To make sure that our families and friends are firmly on our priorities lists along with work and exercise.
To eat well, sleep well and exercise.
(Speaking of which, remember that you don't have to go to a class to do Zumba all you have to do is stick some music on and let your body remember how to dance and have fun I'm with you and I even have a few old videos on YouTube!)
We worry so much about what will happen in our lives right now, we worry about whether we will live or die, we worry about whether our loved ones will live or die but in the meantime, are we living as we really want to?
Embrace life. Make plans. If you suddenly remember that you wanted to visit China, or Japan, start planning, read travel guides preferably the ones I've written.
I'll be visiting my grandma, sharing stories, knowing that no matter what happens next, we have truly lived.
"There may be trouble ahead,
But while there's moonlight and music and love and romance,
Lets face the music and dance."
Lots of love, Pearl x
P.S. If you want to read more, I've written three articles for WHYTT Magazine about the London Fashion week shows and the current state of fashion

Dearly beloved,
Well, I have to do this a little early as Im off to London Fashion Week very soon, but I used to love to send out an email, a Valentine every year, especially to celebrate all the kinds of love there are, not just coupled-up romantic love.
If I ever wrote a love letter, I think this new book trumps it.
Why is this book so special to me? Its a good question, especially as Ive even written a book called Unconditional Love.
This book is everything. Its the tip of the iceberg of all of the things Ive done over the last ten years, since I began Pearl Escapes, since I looked at my younger sister across from me in a Moroccan spa (in Barcelona) after shed asked the question on our flight out - What if this was our business and we got to do this all the time? The goal was always to discover the most amazing things in the world and share them.
To do that has been so much harder than I thought, and the hardest part, the part that has turned me inside out over the years is fear of success, fear of becoming the person who I always wanted to be, living my dreams, fear of doing the very thing I love.
I was terrified of going to the London Book Fair in 2018. I had no meetings, no one expected me, and yet it took everything I had just to walk in there for a few hours. The Jericho Festival of Writers had me experiencing not just fear of success, but terror. I know for some of you, this is not what you want to hear. I post pictures on Instagram and get congratulated on Facebook for finally getting stocked in Waterstones, but the day I get the message from Waterstones I walk along the beach like a stunned rabbit in headlights.
But you stood up and danced in Trafalgar Square?!
But youre going to London Fashion Week?
But you walked across the highest suspension bridge in Bhutan?
But you walked alone down a highway in Mexico?
But I was always a writer, I was always more scared, more ashamed of one thing than any other.
My voice.
I may not be the best Zumba Instructor, but Im pretty sure Im the loudest, and yet so much of the time I have been silent.
This book unpicks the reason I kept silent, why we keep silent when we have so much to share.
I love you.
Im scared.
I need help.
I am so happy.
It even explains why we hide from ourselves, why we keep our own secrets, when very often everybody already knows. Why they are as plain as the nose on our face.
This book is the magic key, the code, to unlock the brilliance and the majesty we hold within, for me it is a talisman that I hold in my hand when things get scary. At 5am I pick up the book and read explanations and ways of holding my fear that get me over it, through it, so I can carry on, on my path, the next morning.
Happy Valentines Day.

Beyond Bias
We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them. Albert Einstein
WHYTT Magazine and Pearl Escapes have come together to create awards that genuinely encourage and recognise talent in fashion, writing, art, travel and wellbeing, regardless of the entrants background, education, popularity or other bias.
Entrants will be given an entry number so they can enter their work without their name, age, gender, nationality their accompanying application form will only be reviewed after their work has been evaluated.
Both Pearl Escapes and WHYTT Magazine have created new perspectives on luxury, defining it not as an excuse for over-consumption, but as quality and expertise with a purpose, whether that is creating ethical and sustainable fashion, spas that keep ancient healing rituals alive or luxury private island hotels that protect the rainforest and create jobs for indigenous people.
Our goals are similar, to help people to succeed, whether it is the readers seeking the new, the next experience that could change their lives, or the imaginative people working to create or share those experiences. These awards are a more inclusive way for us to discover and celebrate those creatives. We hope you will be a part of them.
WHYTT Magazine
WHY Try (new) Things
WHYTT Magazine was born from Editor in Chief Florence Baileys desire to push herself to try new things.
Why try exactly? Too often, when we think of luxury, we think of worlds outside our own grasp. Why does luxury just have to be about thresholds? When will we realise we have every right to try new things, and that it is no longer just about ownership but about the experiences of your life.
WHYTT Magazine is a luxury lifestyle magazine for the parvenu*. We understand that luxury transcends price and we want to share it with our readers from a new perspective.
*Parvenu: a person of humble origin who has gained wealth, influence, or celebrity.
Pearl Escapes
For the last ten years, Pearl Howie has been helping people to escape, to feel alive, through fitness coaching, sharing travel, spa and wellbeing experiences, meditation, writing and publishing consultancy.
She is dedicated to helping people succeed, as demonstrated by her latest book Pearl Escapes Fear of Success.
In her experience there are thousands of writers, fitness professionals, travel businesses, wellbeing teachers and other gifted people who just have no idea how good they are and who deserve the chance for much wider recognition.
The first question she is always asked as a publishing consultant is, Is it any good? Shed like to be able to offer that answer on a much wider scale.

Step 2 - Speak Up (AND SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT)
Instantly know what Im doing on Instagram
For up to minute news check out my Facebook

Dearly beloved,
Theres been so much in my life recently bringing me back to one of the oldest stories that means so much to me, the story of the little mermaid.
Whether it was watching Sex and The City 2 or reading the novel Vox, I was constantly reminded of the power of speech and communication in all its forms. Teaching non-verbally for so many years I understand that communication doesnt have to be in words, or even in signs, we are also communicating heart to heart all the time, but in that story something significant was lost when the little mermaid lost her voice.
Im recording the next installment of Camino de la Luna - Take What You Need right now and I started this in October of last year (its been a heck of a year!) and I know that one of the reasons I havent got there yet is that in this one... I sing. I am going to sing. I am going to do it. It will be done. But oh my goodness, its been a long road.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: ALL THREE PARTS OF THIS BOOK WITH PICTURES ARE FREE ON AMAZON, AROUND THE WORLD, FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS! (PART 1) (PART 2) (PART 3)
...But Ive also realised that speaking up for me can be in the form of my YouTube channel, which I relaunched yesterday, so do check it out, I will be sharing a lot more, and finding my own way to use YouTube (expect a little experimentation and a lot of epic fails on the way).
Please comment, and please be nice. One thing you may not know is that I once had an extremely successful clip online, and I was shocked by the comments about my wonderful actress - it is easy for people to take potshots and say extremely mean things remotely that they wouldnt say in person. So I am being very brave stepping out here! Because it actually takes more for me to step out online than it does for me to show up and speak up in person.
Publishing News
Those of you who read my last newsletter know that I was going to have a play with Amazon Advertising and, although I havent cracked it yet, I have had some pretty good results! Which Ill share below.
Ive also started building a relationship with a young production company to help me produce audiobooks for authors who want to speak up themselves (or have someone read their books for them!)
And that first draft of my new book turned into a second draft, which I am wayyyyy happier with, because I realised, as soon as Id finished it, what gaping holes there were in the narrative. Anyway... stay tuned for more on that one, but in the meantime...
...with a little help from Amazon Advertising:
free hit no. 5 in Spa Travel, and
Phoenix hit no. 6!
Durban hit no. 24 in Republic of South Africa Travel,
Malaysia hit no. 5 in Borneo Travel Guides and no. 5 in Malaysia & Brunei Travel Guides,
Camino de la Luna - Truth hit no. 9 in Borneo Travel Guides, no. 10 in Malaysia & Brunei Travel Guides and no. 14 in Bhutan Travel Guides,
Meditation for Angry People hit no. 52 in Parenting Emotions and Feelings,
Japan continued to ride high in the Kyoto, Tokyo and Japan charts,
and, although authors arent meant to have favourites, this little book got off the starting line and hit no. 43 in General Mexico Travel Guides!
And, okay, Im in tears as Ive just seen that Camino de la Luna - Reconciliation has just hit no. 11 inJohannesburg Travel Guides, no.18 inBorneo Travel Guides and no. 17 inMalaysia & Brunei Travel Guides.
Good luck with whatever you choose to speak up about!
Lots of love, Pearl x
P.S. If you didnt see my last newsletter about my beach retreat in September, read on...
The Beach Retreat - Being The Storyteller
In September I am running my first beach retreat in The Witterings at the lovely West Wittering Beach House http://www.beachhse.co.uk/ which has been my retreat space on so many occasions when I've needed someone to take care of me. It's a wonderful mix of simple and luxury (as every good beach house should be), and the retreat also includes a fabulous breakfast.
This retreat is for those who want to get clarity on their stories. If you think it means that it's just for writers, or people who label themselves as writers, you'd be wrong. Although I have been working primarily with authors, I'm really working with people making a shift - from one style of teaching to another, one style of writing to another, from teaching privately to making their work visible and available around the world. So a big part of what I do is to help people change their story, and I've been doing it for myself for a long time:-
Because I told myself
"I'm a screenwriter, but I could never write a novel." Now I'm working on my second novel.
"I'm just a fiction writer." I've since published dozens of non-fiction titles, and become an Amazon Best Selling Author in many Self-Help and Travel categories.
"I'm a writer, but I do love taking snaps." When I started playing with photos in my work I was suddenly getting compliments from professional photographers as well as launching a busy Instagram account and publishing a huge photographic series of books (one of which is an Amazon Best Seller).
"I could never leave London, I could never leave England for long." And yet I've left "home" behind and found hundreds of homes around the world, and travelled for months to some of the remotest places you can imagine. It was in me all along.
I've gone from being unable to walk unaided to teaching Zumba Fitness and dancing on stage with the world's best, I've gone from writing screenplays to poetry, novels, self-help books, travel guides, and I'm not done yet. I've sold my photography, which I guess also makes me a professional photographer and a professional cinematographer having distributed my own feature film internationally I quit my well-paid day job to start Pearl Escapes in the middle of the last recession I've gone from being afraid to leave my flat to waking up in the morning and booking a flight to Johannesburg with no accommodation or real plan (and it was one of the best things I ever did).
This retreat is for you if you're feeing grumpy about your life, if you know there is something not true in what you're telling yourself. If you're grumpy about your work and you know there is more for you, either in the way you create it or the way you share it. If you're thinking, 'Is this all there is?'
By the end of your retreat, you will have developed awareness of the stories you are telling, or being told, and you will be free to move in any direction in your art and in your life by taking the energy that you're using now to hold yourself back and, instead, using that energy to take your next step.
