Hey you,
After my last real blog post/newsletter (you know the one where I told you that my new book was finally available online) I realised that making the book available as a paperback WAS possible, in exactly the same way that Ive been publishing my books for years - through Lulu. Id been put off by thinking that it would be very expensive and might not look any good but then I started thinking about Japan... When we were in Wakayama we really wanted to get a taxi to see Nachi Falls and also to drive through the mountains of the Kumano Kodo at sunrise (you dont see a lot from the train as it goes all the way around - and takes another couple of hours at least) but we had a problem... it was expensive. It wasnt actually the money that was the problem, it was our hotel concierge, he was really distressed that we would spend so much money You can take the train. he said. I really had to talk him into it. It took three phone calls. And Im so glad I did because we got to see the rising sun as we left, experience the magical shadowy mountains and arrive at Nachi Falls early enough to spend a lot of quality time there, and it is one of the most beautiful and inspiring places Ive ever visited. Also the journey back was a real drag, a long, long time on a bus through towns with no English signage and a long, long time on the train too, so Im glad we didnt have to do it twice.
So, yes, I uploaded the book to Lulu, ordered my proof copy and waited patiently. I thought I was either going to cry with joy or disappointment, but actually when I opened the package I felt something different - recognition. This was the book I had been working on, had in my head and now it was in my hands it felt, well, like it was meant to be.
And, although it will be pretty expensive when it finds its way to Amazon and other online booksellers, Ive set up a discount on Lulu, which together with their regular discounts (click this link to their home page to see current offer codes) means it currently costs around 30 for you to order the book and have it delivered - which was my target price in the first place! (Ill be honest, even if and when I can order a large print run, once it appears on Amazon with their mark up its still going to cost around 30.)
But Im so happy that its now live and out there. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted because I so wanted to see this book breathe. And I feel, for the first time in my life, like an artist. I take photos, rather than paint, and work it in with the words, but painting my walls at home this year in January perhaps was the key - breaking through that voice in my head that said Im the non-artistic one in the family. just like I finally broke through that voice telling me I couldnt publish this book print on demand. Isnt it crazy how the biggest obstacles in our lives are so often just in our heads?
So to celebrate Ill be having a book launch party picnic on Wednesday 17th August 10-11am in Morden Hall Park Rose Garden. Ill talk a little about the book and you can check it out (I wont have additional copies, but if you want you can order yours in advance and bring your copy along to be signed - or ask me about ordering one for you). They take about a week as they are made to order, now doesnt that make you feel special?
You can bring your own food and drink and picnic blanket, or theres the National Trust cafe too - coffees pretty good and cheese scones are awesome. Oh and well decamp there if its wet.
And if you cant make it (or even if you can) Ill be doing talks to promote the book so if you have an event, a group or just know another nice park we can hang out in - just give me a holler.
