With trembling fingers, I picked up the paper. I tried to read it, but my vision blurred. I blinked and focused. "I...uh…can't read this." I held it out to Shamus.Shamus looked at it and chuckled. "That's because it's in Gaelic.""Can you read it?"He shook his head. "No. I recognize it, but I can't read it."I chewed my bottom lip. "You didn't put it here?""No. Like I said earlier, I've never been to your apartment."The room spun and a cold sweat trickled down my spine. I dropped onto my couch. "I don't understand. First the flowers then the balloons and now…this." I shook the paper, hoping the letters would rearrange into English.Shamus settled on the sofa cushion next to me. His eyes filled with concern. My tummy did a delighted flip at the sight of him worrying about me. My heart fluttered when he laid his hand upon my arm and gave it a gentle squeeze. "I can explain about the balloon. It's nothing really. When you were going through the take-out boxes and setting up the dinner, I snuck back in through a door and tied the balloon to the table." He grinned and shrugged. "No magic. No mystery. Just me trying to impress you.""You wanted to impress me?" Dumb question – I know. But sometimes my brain stops functioning. Especially when I stare into sapphire blue eyes."I noticed you several weeks ago and tried to devise a brilliant way to snag your attention." He glanced at his feet. "I settled on the run away dog trick.""Well, it worked. I mean, he's the size of a small elephant." I grinned.

You know, time does fly. You know what I mean. Those moments when you look up and say, "It's Thursday? What happened to Wednesday?" or "It's May already?"That actually was the question I asked myself as I stared at my morning bowl of black cherry yogurt with walnut oatmeal granola. The kitten calendar on the fridge door read May. My cell phone said May. Who am I to argue with technology?I guess when tulips stop appearing and disappearing and mysterious messages on paper don't pop out of nowhere that life settles into a calmer rhythm pretty fast.In the past four weeks, I'd quit my job, moved out of the closet-size apartment, moved into the gardener's cottage on the McTavis Estate and took up my internship with Garry Heslop, the retiring head gardener.

I stood by the side of the pond, tossing handfuls of feed into the shallow water and I laughed as the ducks and geese waddled over, scavenging for food.Movement to my left caught my attention. A large, old car, a Rolls Royce I think, parked at the edge of the lot. The front door opened and a chauffeur exited. Cool. I wonder which celebrity is getting married today?Although not in full flower, the early spring gardens did make a striking backdrop for wedding photos or model shoots. A tingle shot from my belly to my toes when he stepped out of the car.

She gasped for air just as Ian covered her lips with his.He accepted her invitation, sliding his tongue into her mouth, bringing with it the sweet taste of whiskey and a smell of bergamot that made her think of Earl Grey tea. His masculine presence—so close, so vital, so insistent—stole her thoughts and made her weak in the knees.He explored her mouth with a tender thoroughness she’d never experienced before, one that seemed to go on forever. The intense kiss melted her inside, leaving her a limp shell clinging to him to keep from sinking to the floor.At last, he let her go and stood staring at her, brows furrowed in contemplation. “I beg your pardon.” His frown deepened. “I should not have taken such a liberty, Miss MacGowan.”“Pardon granted, Mr. Hunterly,” she said once she could breathe again. He looked so confused—almost embarrassed—she longed to smooth the deep lines on his forehead away, brush the dark curly hair to the side, and stroke his cheek. If she touched him again, though, she wouldn’t be responsible for what she would do. It certainly wouldn’t be proper by Victorian standards—maybe not even by those of her own time.

Scene Set- Darcy, junior gardener, is working on a flower bed when she is smashed into by a young sheep dog.I glanced from the bright-eyed sheep dog to the scowling-faced man. "You named your dog Reginald?""Yes. I am so sorry. He gets excited near a body of water. I believe he thinks it's a big water bowl. May I offer you an apology on his behalf? And some assistance?"I placed the flat next to me on the ground, wiped my hands on my pants leg and reached up, grasping his outstretched hand. With a firm pull, he hoisted me to my feet. The force of the movement tumbled me forwards and I fell, face first, onto his chest. The sweet scent of Sandalwood filled my nose a moment before it was crushed against a firm chest.Placing one hand on the front of his jacket, I pushed backwards while covering my nose with the other. Praying blood didn't dribble down my chin, I sniffed trying to stem the tears trying to escape my eyes. I blinked twice then glanced up into a sapphire blue gaze. "I'm so sorry."He smiled. "No, you mustn't ask forgiveness." He placed his hand over his heart. "Again, I offer an apology for the rudeness of my dog.""But if your dog hadn't run into me then I wouldn't have had the pleasure of smashing my face onto your chest." I felt my eyebrows raised to my hairline as the heat of a blush burned my cheeks. I hadn't meant to let those words escape my traitor of a mouth.His deep chuckle was like sprinkles on ice cream. It made me giggle and filled me with a desire to run barefoot through a field of daisies.

Scene set - continuing from last week's snippet - Darcy is taking the subway home. A fellow commuter has fallen asleep and the Vogue she is reading slides off her lap onto the floor next to Darcy.



The magazine slipped a bit more and settled on the floor. My gaze riveted to the open page. An advertisement for an exquisite piece of jewellery, but it was the colour of the emeralds that captured my attention. They were the same shade of green as his eyes.A tingle raced through my body just thinking about his eyes. They held a power that reached into me and for those brief moments of contact made me light-hearted and yet also afraid. Afraid I could lose myself to him.Was I ready to give myself to another? Not that there was anyone in my life at the present. My love life was exactly like a Dillhoffia – extinct.Amid the confusion of a subway stop — three before mine — I bent lower and picked up Calla's magazine.
