#8Sunday: Why Terrans are trouble ~ Excerpt from COSMIC SUTRA #scifi #romance #lesfic

Weekend Writing Warriors personal

Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!

Hello! Well, I didn’t reach 50,000 words, but I managed 40,284, which is more than I’ve managed any other month since I started writing, so I’m happy. Since I have a finished story and an almost finished story now, this will be my last WeWriWa post for Cosmic Sutra. Next week I will share from one of my NaNoWriMo stories. Oh, and I have a freebie today. More on that below…

Here’s one last excerpt from COSMIC SUTRA, my New Adult Lesbian Sci-Fi Romance.

Set-up: I’m skipping far ahead. Victoria and Kaye are now in a relationship, have been intimate, and Victoria is making everyone at Thanh rethink what they believe about Terrans. Then the bombing happens, and everything changes.

Kaye placed her hands on Victoria’s chest and gently pushed her back. “You cannot go. You can’t leave this room, not until everything settles.”

“Why?” She didn’t understand. If she couldn’t leave, why was it any safer for Kaye?

“It was a bomb set by some Terran students; a witness saw them running away just before the explosion happened. The repercussions for you are going to be brutal.” Kaye clasped her hand. “Promise me you won’t leave here until class starts again, and don’t open the door for anyone.”

Cosmic Sutra, a sci-fi lesbian romance story by Jessica E. Subject

COSMIC SUTRA

When Victoria is offered a scholarship to attend Thanh Academy for her last year of university, she jumps at the opportunity. Nothing could be more practical in her psychology studies than to travel to the other side of the universe and live amongst the life forms she strives to learn from.

Upon her arrival, she is met with hostility. Convincing the other students she is not like those from Earth who came before her takes time, but eventually she is embraced by a small group of friends, including a sexy female alien she fantasizes about on a daily basis.

Based on past experience, will Victoria keep her lust hidden deep inside to prevent losing a friend? Or will she confess her feelings to Kaye and possibly find her one true love?

#8Sunday: More comfortable than the floor ~ Excerpt from COSMIC SUTRA #scifirom #LGBT #romance

Weekend Writing Warriors personal

Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!

Hello! I’ve been up and down with NaNoWriMo this week. Some days are better than others, but I’m not out. I’m still writing. JAGER is coming along well. Oh, and I have a freebie today. More on that below…

Today, I’m sharing another excerpt from COSMIC SUTRA, my New Adult Lesbian Sci-Fi Romance.

Set-up: Last week, Victoria literally ran into the other heroine, and the first meeting didn’t go so well. I’m skipping ahead quite a bit to where Victoria and Kaye have been assigned as partners for a class assignment. They have just finished and are ready to head home, but Kaye is stuck. She can’t go outside because her race is sensitive to the weather. (edited to fit)

“Um, you’re welcome to stay in my room for a bit. It’s got to be more comfortable than the floor.”

Kaye’s ears wiggled, but the smile that had earlier accompanied the gesture never came. “Really, you want me to stay with you?”

Rolling her eyes, Victoria glanced away. “I know I’m just a lowly Terran. Forget I said anything.”

“No!” Kaye jumped to her feet. “It’s just, I never expected you to offer, with your kind…. with me being so rude to you.”

#8Sunday: Meet the other heroine ~ Excerpt from COSMIC SUTRA #sfr #lesfic #romance

Weekend Writing Warriors personal

Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!

Hello! NaNoWriMo has been a struggle lately. I’m still writing, but haven’t been keeping up with my words. There have been many other things interfering with my writing time. I’m going to be a bit later responding than usual. I try to get to as many as I can on Saturday night, but that’s not going to be possible this week. I will visit though, I promise.

Today, I’m sharing another excerpt from COSMIC SUTRA, my New Adult Lesbian Sci-Fi Romance.

Set-up: Last week, Victoria saw some of the food she’d have to get used to eating. In today’s excerpt, you get to meet the other heroine of the story, Kaye… (edited to fit)

She twisted back around to locate her guide, smacking right into another being. Victoria tried to steady herself, but couldn’t, falling right on top of the life form. Oh no, a leabu. Victoria rolled off as quickly as possible, stood up, and reached a hand out to help the woman back to her feet. The delicate see-through outer shell with sparkling silver adornments swirling across the covering didn’t help much in terms of protection.

The woman pursed her full, pink lips and swatted Victoria’s hand away with six-inch claws protruding from her fingers. “Stupid Terran, I don’t need help from you. Just watch where you’re going next time.” She sprang to her feet, her pointed ears fluttering as if in frustration.

Note: This pin on Pinterest is what I image Kaye to look like.

You can read the entire first chapter at New DRB1stChp Blog.

#NewRelease ~ THE PAIN SEASON by @LibbyDoyle9 ~ Meet the Master of Matter and Energy #sfr #romance

blog-guest-post-2016
Meet Pellus, Master of Matter and Energy

By Libby Doyle, author of the Covalent Series

I’d like to introduce you to Pellus, a vital character in The Covalent Series, and a total badass. But first, a little about the series. It’s a sexy urban fantasy that features a murder investigation, battles with demons, and political intrigue on an alien world. At its heart, though, it is a love story between Alexandra “Zan” O’Gara, an intrepid FBI agent, and Rainer Barakiel, a superhuman warrior from another dimension. In Book I, The Passion Season, they meet and fall in love. In Book II, The Pain Season, let’s just say the title is evocative of their states of mind.

The Pain Season by Libby Doyle

Barakiel is Covalent, a race of ancient beings who use their great power to keep the elemental forces of Creation and Destruction in Balance. He has lived in exile on Earth for centuries, passing for human. He was able to avoid detection and accumulate great wealth thanks to Pellus, who is a type of Covalent known as a traveler adept. Pellus was tasked to look after Barakiel when he was young. Over the centuries, the traveler adept has come to love Barakiel like a son.

One might say all good heroes need a sidekick, but Pellus is much more than that. He is my Spock, my Data, my Gandalf, and my Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is a master of matter and energy.

What do I mean? Pellus can manipulate the environment because he sees the world through the lens of quantum physics. His mind is beyond the most powerful human supercomputer. He can see subatomic particles and assess probabilities in their behavior. He can alter the molecular structure of everything: the air, the soil, the light. For your enjoyment, here is a brief passage from The Pain Season that describes his power.

Pellus focused, forming another compression a sliver in front of the barrier. He drew from power lines buried in the grass to slowly build a lattice that crawled upward over the old barrier, sparking and zapping. Not a solid wall. More like a fine mesh of unbreakable filaments that repelled and attracted electricity in alternating rounds, warning the demons that they would touch it at their peril.

Yeah. Pellus is coooool. You may have noticed that he’s called a traveler adept. Although he can do much more, traveling is his basic function in the Covalent Realm. He can detect tears or gaps in the fabric of existence that he uses to journey between dimensions. The Covalent call these gaps the kinetic rifts. They perpetually open and close, like the breathing of reality. Pellus can see them and navigate among and between them. He can travel to Earth from the Covalent Realm in an instant.

The rifts are how Barakiel moves back and forth between Earth and his homeworld. I got the idea from string theory, which seeks to unify the principles of quantum mechanics with Einstein’s theory of gravity. String theory posits that all matter and energy is composed of a strings that continuously vibrate. As the physicists worked out mathematical equation to test their theories, they discovered something astounding (well, if you’re a theoretical physicist). They learned that the equations only make sense if there are dimensions beyond the four that we know (three spatial and one time). The equations indicate that there are eleven dimensions (and some configurations propose twenty-six)! The physicists surmise these dimensions are close to our own, folded in right next to it, manifesting in vibrating sheets of power called branes.

Of course, it’s really much more complicated. All my research sources packaged the theory for the consumption of non-physicists. I’m not even good at math! But for some reason, this theory stirred my imagination, and I used it to construct the cosmology of my urban fantasy. When the Covalent used their great power to bring the elemental forces to Balance so their world would not be destroyed, that bonding of the forces caused myriad dimensions to erupt from the edges of the bonded realms. One of these dimensions contains Earth.

Pellus understands all this on an intuitive level and sees a world in which empty space is not empty space, but a field of vibrating, interacting particles that tell him the story of existence. I’ll leave you with this bit of dialogue.

“Feeling chilly?” Pellus asked.

“You did that to me?”

“Yes. In the area around you, I blocked the transfer of energy among particles that produce heat. Cold is simply the absence of heat.”

“Could you freeze someone on the spot?”

“I never have, but I suppose I could.”

Zan forcefully exhaled. “Christ. I’m glad you’re on my side.”

Barakiel chuckled. “Zan, you have no idea how often I have said that to myself.”

THE PAIN SEASON

by Libby Doyle

Page Length:  351 pages

Publisher: Fairhill Publishing LLC

The Pain Season by Libby DoyleON THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX, ZAN O’GARA’S LIFE WILL CHANGE.

Tonight’s the night. Rainer Barakiel is going to tell me all his secrets. I thought I’d be excited, but I feel like someone shoved a knife into my gut.

Heh. Fitting, considering I met Rainer because of his expertise in edged weapons. The daggers used in that ritual sacrifice became our best lead thanks to him. What kind of omen is it, that I met the love of my life because someone found a human spleen in the bushes?

I didn’t expect someone like him. When he opened his door I couldn’t talk, I was so stunned. God, how I flirted with him. Hell of a way for an FBI agent to act. This whole relationship is a hell of a way for an FBI agent to act. I didn’t want to face that he was hiding things from me.

What if he has something to do with this murder?

I’m being paranoid. He’s denied being a criminal and I believe him. I don’t see how my instincts could be so wrong. He can’t be bad. He can’t.

He’s hiding things from me, but he loves me. I feel it. Maybe he didn’t expect to fall in love with me, but he did, and now he wants out. He’s going to confess, leave it all behind. For me.

I wonder, after he tells me all his secrets, will this become a wacky story we love to tell? Or a story I tell only to myself, alone in a stale-smelling apartment, stewing in pain? The story of how my heart got damaged beyond repair.

WARNING: This book contains foul language, violence, and explicit sex. Adults only, please. Although not a cliffhanger, this is not a stand-alone novel. The story began in The Passion Season, and will continue in The Vengeance Season.

blog excerpt 2016

The Pain Season: Book II of the Covalent Series

A sexy urban fantasy by Libby Doyle

Excerpt – Autumnal Equinox – Chapter 1

Set up: In Book I of the Covalent Series, FBI Agent Alexandra “Zan” O’Gara met Rainer Barakiel when he offered to help the FBI solve a gruesome crime. They fell madly in love, but he didn’t tell her that he’s an exiled alien warrior. Even as he made her feel more connected to life than she’d ever felt, she knew he was hiding things from her. This excerpt is from the beginning of Book II. Rainer plans to reveal his true nature, but before he has the chance, she is attacked. He has just called her to warn her that his enemies are coming for her.  This excerpt contains violence and foul language.

*****

Alexandra O’Gara sat on the couch flipping the pages of a magazine, too nervous to focus on reading. Normally, she liked it when Rainer asked her to wait for him at his place. Compared to her crappy little apartment, the ultra-modern space was an oasis of serenity, its sleek lines warmed by the rich wood of the furniture, the colorful rugs and the bright, abstract paintings. She had started a fire in the massive concrete fireplace despite the warmth of the night. She gazed into the flames.

Her phone buzzed. It was Rainer, talking rapidly, panic in his voice. When the call was over, she put the phone in her lap and stared at the floor.

What the hell?

Rainer’s tone led her to believe she should do as he said. Explanation or no, he wasn’t joking.

So much for my instincts. He must be involved in some criminal enterprise.

She suppressed tears as she pulled her service pistol from her bag. A 9mm Sig Sauer. Rainer had said there would be five assailants. She sent a prayer of thanks out to her FBI partner, Mel, who had insisted she get the Sig that took extra-capacity magazines.

Two twenty-round clips. That should do me.

Zan readied her firearm then ran to the front door. Before she opened it, she heard a vehicle drive into the compound. She looked through the peephole. A box truck.

I’ll never make it to my car. Should I call the police? Do I want to do that to Rainer? Have to explain this to my boss? I can slip out the back.

She remembered what Rainer had said about a defensive position. She decided on the weapons room. Its double doors were sturdy and it had an exit to the back balcony. She ran up the stairs. Once inside the room, she grabbed a pike off the wall and slid it through the handles to prevent the doors from opening. She waited. If they seemed like they could bust through, she would exit to the balcony, jump to the ground and hightail it to her car.

All I can do is hope they don’t leave someone outside to cut off my escape.

Zan opened the south-side window. She heard faint voices, doors slamming, the truck pulling away. She also heard sounds like rabid dogs would make if they were as big as grizzlies. Zan had not been afraid before, operating in some state of unreality, but the sounds brought fear screaming to her mind.

What the hell is that?

She ran to peer through the crack between the weapons room doors. She saw them crash through the front. Five huge, scaly, slobbering monsters with double-sided axes in their hands pushed the heavy wooden doors aside like they were paper.

Libby Doyle post pictureOh my god, oh my god. I have gone crazy.

Closing her eyes, Zan tried to breathe, to fight her terror.

Think, soldier. These doors won’t stop them. I’ve got this fucking pea shooter. I need a fucking assault rifle. I need help.

Hands shaking, she dialed 911. The beasts stood near the kitchen table, making guttural noises and sniffing the air before they turned their yellow eyes toward the weapons room. She had to get out of there.

“Hello, 911, what is your emergency?”

Zan spoke as she ran toward the balcony door. “I’m being attacked. Bridge and Richmond streets in Bridesburg.”

“Are you injured, ma’am?”

“No. But I will be if you don’t send a squad car now! Send every squad car in the area! I’m being attacked by monsters!”

“Monsters, ma’am?”

Fucking hell. Why did I say that? She thinks I’m a crank.

“Please. Bad people. Monstrous people.” Zan’s voice was weak with fear. “I have to hang up. I have to hide. Please send help.”

She went onto the balcony, climbed over the railing, hung from the ledge and dropped to the ground. She paused with one hand held over her mouth, the gun clutched in the other.

The response time is ten minutes if I’m lucky. I can’t run. I can’t. Who knows how many people those things would kill? I have to stop them.

Zan took a position behind a nearby tree. From inside she heard a crashing sound. The hideous things burst through the balcony door a few seconds later. She ran towards them, pumping bullets into every monster near the railing, outlined as they were by the light from inside. They howled and batted at their chests, but they did not fall. Zan returned to the tree, taking gulps of air as she reloaded.

I’m a dead woman.

blog excerpt 2016

“Are ye angry with me because ye think I’m going to pass ye off to another or because ye want more of the pleasure I gave ye last night?”

Beatrice hadn’t the slightest clue how to respond to his question. In fact, she had no idea how to feel at this moment. She desired him, but she wanted so much more than to become a leman. Up until her exile, Beatrice had hoped to one day marry and have children, and no one in the Highlands would have her.

“I’m not sure why I’m angry, if ye must know. I have no idea why I thought giving myself to ye was a good idea.”

“If yer talking about the lad, I had no idea ye still cared for him. If yer worried that I will hand ye off to another, I will not do so unless that is what ye want. And I have no idea where ye seem to think I would have made ye my leman. I do not want one at all. I haven’t got the time to keep mistresses about, but I do have need of a wife.”

Beatrice stilled in his arms. “A wife?”

“Aye, a wife. How do ye suppose I will have heirs? Immaculate conception?”

“I see,” she said, unsure of where this discussion was going to end.

“Right now is not the time to discuss these issues. Even a laird has to take time away from bed to tend to important matters. I will return to the keep, and Giric will escort ye when yer ready.”

“Why must I go? Yer affairs are exactly that. Yers.”

“My affairs also include you, from the moment I made ye mine. So, ye’ll join me at the keep within the hour, and do not keep me waiting.”

Colin lifted her off of him and placed her back on the bed. She watched him dress just as quickly, splash some water on his face, and walk out of the cottage.

Lord, if they didna have the audience outside of the cottage, she’d have yelled at him soundly and remind him that this was her home and not his.

But Lord, how she adored that man and the very body he possessed.

Beatrice left the bed to see what clean water she had left in the pail. Luckily, she had enough to clean herself up and make herself presentable before Colin and Lady McIntyre.

By the time she met Giric outside, a small group of soldiers had joined him.

“Are ye ready, Beatrice?”

“I thought I was only to be accompanied by ye?”

“The laird thought it would be a good idea to have more just in case there were any lingering soldiers loyal to the Sinclair.”

“I see. Well, if we must, then let us be on our way. I canna imagine he’d be happy if I kept him any longer.”

“Just a word of advice, lass. What the laird wants, he usually gets. So ye might not want to incite his anger.” Giric leaned in and whispered, “Unless yer wanting yer backside spanked.”
