SEXY IN HISTORY
Here’s seven from SATIN SHEETS IN SPACE, which is part of INTERGALACTIC HEAT, only 99¢ for the month of October. Enjoy!
Set-up: I don’t have any historical romances, but the hero and heroine need to dress up for a ball in Satin Sheets in Space. Here’s an excerpt of the hero (an alien) trying to find something to wear.
Galan drummed his fingers against the counter. He hadn’t expected to have such a hard time finding eighteenth century dress, specifically a knee-length justacorps-style coat and breeches. It wasn’t that he couldn’t find any, but none of the costume shops he’d visited had anything in his size. His thighs prevented him from wearing most pants, and the width of his back caused coat after coat to rip in the seams. Did they grow them that small here?
At last, he’d found the perfect costume for the ball at a quaint boutique named Connie’s Couture. The elegant black outfit, with red silk shirt and stockings, seemed to have been tailored for him, although he’d never been to this area during his travels.
Connie remained in the back, completing some last minute adjustments to his clothing, while he ran through his mental list of everything he needed to purchase before he met his date. Flowers, breath mints…what else?
A hotel room waited for them at the Castillo Hotel, where the ball would take place, but he planned to take his date elsewhere, if she agreed. Traveling as much as he did, he grew lonely and wanted someone to share the wondrous places he often visited. His brother as his companion wasn’t enough. No, he wanted a woman to settle down with rather than finding a new source of temporary satisfaction at every port.
During his last stopover, he’d avoided all his and Volan’s usual haunts, instead spending his evenings on the beaches of Somnium, contemplating his life. And his next voyage. A friend of a friend had recommended the 1Night Stand dating service he’d heard about on Earth. Still, he’d had reservations. He wasn’t like any of the men he’d met around the Terran city of Las Vegas. But he’d filled out the forms, and learned yesterday about his date.
His life had been a scramble since, with no time to inform his brother of his plans. What would Volan think of the arrangement? He’d been quite happy with a variety of women, and never hinted at the need to settle down. Would his brother be respectful of his change in lifestyle? Didn’t matter. He’d already made his decision, so long as his date went well. He needed something different. Maybe his conversion would influence Volan to commit to one woman.
“All set, Mr. Galan.” Connie rushed from the back room, a black polyester bag across her arm. “I hope you have a wonderful time at the ball tonight and charm the lucky woman you’re going to meet.”

Walking into the silky rear-end of an uidiss, she came to an abrupt halt. The creature had been walking at a steady pace and then stopped. She’d failed to notice in time. Wiping fluff off her face, she turned around and walked into another hard body. “I’m so sorry.”
Hands clamped down on her arms. “Are you all right?”
She stared up into deep brown eyes. Chewing her bottom lip, she nodded. If this man hadn’t been holding on to her, she would have fallen to the ground. The word swoon held no meaning for her until now.
Am I only like this because of the ipsum I inhaled back home? Or was there something more she found heart-racing about the blue-skinned, well-muscled hunk of an Ubetron who held her up?
No, she couldn’t feel anything for him. Their races had been sworn enemies for years. Everyone across the galaxy knew that. Yet here she was, standing face to face, gazing intently at him, with no will to move.
He smiled at her, drawing her attention from his eyes to his lips. How would they taste? She’d never kissed anyone intimately before.
“You look familiar. What’s your name?”
Name? Gods, what was her name? “Ni…Nixie.” Had she told him, or only thought the word?
He released her arms to brush his fingers along her jaw line. How she remained standing, she had no idea.
“Nixie. A beautiful name belonging to a beautiful woman. Have we met before?”
Moisture pooled between her thighs. Her cheeks warmed. “Thank you, but no.” She’d definitely remember meeting him.
As he trailed a hand down her arm, she sighed. Her entire body tingled from his gentle touch.
“Okay, weird. You must remind me of someone else. Now tell me, why were you in such a rush that you walked into the rear end of that slow-moving beast? We’re supposed to be on vacation, enjoying all this planet has to offer.”
Laughing at his description of the uidiss, she leaned against his arm. Never before had she enjoyed a man’s attention like this. “I’m not visiting. I live here. Have my whole life.”
He raised his eyebrows. “Really? So, what was it like growing up on the pleasure planet?”

Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!
Today I’m sharing another snippet from BEYOND REACH, which releases Monday. As I mentioned last week, I will not share the more sensual snippets for Weekend Writing Warriors. If you want to reach those, check out my Saturday posts.
Set-up: Skipping past all the sensual scenes at the beginning, Nixie learns something bad has happened to the woman who raised her on Schedar. Not all is well on the pleasure planet…

Set-up: This snippet follows last week’s. Mekai has plotted to get out of his arranged marriage, not just because he doesn’t care for Madelia, but also because of his unknown fantasy woman, possibly his sexy soul mate.
“Oh, Mekai, I’m so glad you decided to deflower me before our wedding night. Take me this instant.”
Don’t fail me now, Ben.
“No, Madelia. It’s me, Ben. Don’t worry. No one will know.”
“Oh, even better. Will Mekai be joining us?”
A threesome? Oh, gods. Could he get any harder? He and Ben often discussed sex, what their first time would be like, and whom they wanted to lose their virginity to. He’d had plenty of offers from fair maidens, those he could never have any affection for. Not with the strange woman invading his dreams every night. A woman he cherished and had made love to in the fantasia world for as long as he knew the definition of sex. Though, he had yet to meet her, and never would if he didn’t leave Carbae.
Ben, though, had always been fond of Madelia. She had never shown any interest in him before tonight, but Mekai, betrothed or not, refused to betray his best friend.
He’d plotted this night ever since his wedding date had been set, for no matter how hard he tried, he could never care for Madelia. Watching his parents pretend to love each other over the years had been enough for him. No way in Tenebrae did he want the same kind of relationship for himself. And then, he’d heard rumors from the bajulus who brought supplies to the kingdom about a planet in the Wopavian system where visitors paid to receive sexual pleasure from the revered Suavitas. That was where he planned to travel. He wanted to experience every sensation before he settled down with anyone. And maybe, if he proved lucky, he could forget about the fantasy woman. Once his marriage was called off, he planned to sneak away from Carbae and get busy living.

When Jessica invited me to her blog (glad to be back, Jess!), she suggested I talk about the characters from Mission to New Earth. I was really grateful for her suggestion because, after twenty-eight days of blogging, I was running out of ideas. I’d already done two character interviews—Sara and Marsh. So maybe you’d like to meet the rest of the team.

Meet The Characters
In my new release, Mission to New Earth, there are six important characters: Sara (narrator and team leader) and her team of five. Four days before launch almost ensures that tension will be high, nerves tight, emotions flaring—as evidenced by the first sentences.
I thought this week would never arrive. Yet, it came too soon. Are we ready? If we had another week, month, year, would we be ready?
Too late now.
The following exchange a page and a half later, shows more.
Marsh strode toward me with determination—so different from that easy-going swagger that caught my eye the first time I saw him four years ago at the White Sands Training Center. I never believed in love at first sight, but oh, mama. With dark-haired, dark-eyed Marsh, I fell hard. I must’ve done a great job hiding my feelings back then. He said he never knew—until a year later when I pinned him on the exercise mat and kissed him. Yep, I took the initiative and planted a toe-curling smooch on his delectable lips. Not to be outdone, he kissed back. Holy smoke. If I’d known what a great kisser he was, I’d have done it sooner. He said he’d been biding his time, waiting for me to catch up. According to him, one look into my “gorgeous blue eyes” and he was a goner, too.
“We need to talk,” he said as he blasted past me toward our quarters.
What? I looked around. Where was the rest of my team? Marsh took an impatient whack at the mistletoe ball hung from a garland. Oh, boy. What had gotten into him?
Bill and Tom trailed behind Marsh with Gloria and Ana bringing up the rear. Like me, they wore forest green jumpsuits, and they did not look pleased. Glum was a better word.
The last simulation wasn’t that bad. A couple of glitches with last minute corrections. Maybe a reminder to one person or another. I thought we did well. Glitches happened. No need for concern. Or was there? What didn’t I know?
Bill hung back and waited for me to catch up. “He’s right. We need to talk without Big Brother listening.”
The last he delivered in a whisper with a wink and a nudge.
“I assume Marsh has a place in mind?” I matched my stride to Bill’s, the most easy-going of our team. Bill was a guy’s guy. Best friend to everyone.
“Yeah, he does.”
As we followed, Marsh strode across the corridor to the left. The only private place down there was a lavatory. Not my favorite destination for a team meeting. But beggars couldn’t be choosers, as my mom used to say.
“We screwed up again,” Marsh announced as soon as the five of us joined him. His voice echoed off the hard surfaces. “In RT, it could kill us.”
“You and your damn RT,” Tom spat out. “Why can’t you just say real time like a normal person?”
That was the introduction to the five team members. The following shows more. (By the way, Sara had been instructed to watch her team from the control booth during the simulation.)
Military background evident, Marsh stood in the middle of the area near the showers, his feet wide apart, hands clasped behind his back. The others were more casual. Bill held up a white-tiled wall across from the showers. Ana and Gloria sat on a fake wood bench. Meanwhile, I crossed my arms and leaned against a sink. I tried to look casual even though my nerves were strung tight. We had to be ready for the launch. Earth was depending on us.
All of my team, except Tom and Marsh, wore hang-dog expressions. At forty, six years older than me, Tom was the oldest on the team and a damn fine pilot. His red face and mutinous expression as he confronted Marsh belied his usually even-keeled manner.
“You’re exaggerating, Rayburn.” That was more than angry. Tom was defiant. “You always exaggerate. Worst case scenario? Is that all you think about?”
I’d never seen Tom so worked up. Gloria walked over to him and rubbed his shoulder. Usually in stressful times, her gentle caress calmed him down. Not now.
When he shrugged off her hand, I caught the hurt in her eyes.
“C’mon, Bill. Back me up on this.”
Bill held out his hands in a don’t-get-me-involved gesture. He was our engineer, both formal and practical. He could fix anything from wonky engines to food replicators.
Tom turned to me. “Sara?”
I knew that was coming. I tried to let my team work things out by themselves. Soon we’d be living in close confines, not just on the ship but on our Goldilocks planet. If we couldn’t live in harmony during training, we would be in deep trouble once we reached our final destination. We’d be in even worse trouble if we couldn’t work out our differences here. Marsh was right to pick the only place that wasn’t monitored. We absolutely didn’t want the directors to think we weren’t a well-functioning team.
They could pull us and put in the Shadow Team. Our replacements.
“Okay, guys, what did I miss?” With a forced grin, I raised my right hand. “I swear I wasn’t dreaming about a day at the beach during the sim.”
Marsh, with his military background (he was a SEAL) would have made a good leader but not in a democracy. He’s a my-way-or-the-highway kind of guy. Bill (engineer) is too easy going and Tom (pilot) could be a hot head. Neither Ana (herbologist/zoologist) nor Gloria (doctor) wanted to be leader. Sara, with her linguistic skills, is the communications specialist. But it’s her ability to get a team to work together that made the directors choose her as leader. Using humor (esp. the self-deprecating kind), she could usually lessen the tension.
Bill and Gloria laughed out loud. They knew how much I missed my California sun and surf. Intense, serious-minded Ana cracked a smile. Tom didn’t. Marsh just stared unrelentingly.
He stood ramrod straight, another leftover from his military training. “Slow reflexes, poor timing, and lackadaisical attitudes. And that’s just for starters. If that sim had been RT, we would all have been killed. Thanks to you, Warfield.”
“Why you—” Tom would have punched him if Gloria hadn’t gripped his arm.
“Whoa.” Bill pushed away from his wall. “Hey, Marsh, why don’t you tell us how you really feel?”
Marsh, who’d taken a defensive stance in preparation for Tom’s blow, didn’t back down. He didn’t even move.
“Okey-dokey.” I stepped between them, hoping one of them didn’t let loose and clock me. “Let’s bring this down a notch. C’mon, guys. It’s the holidays. Let’s have some good cheer. We’re a team. Remember? An effective team.”
Bill snorted. A movie aficionado like me, he got the reference to a long-ago film.
“Listen up, folks. From the control booth, the landing looked to be a success. You didn’t crash. That’s a good point, right?” I looked around at the five before blowing out a breath. “All this extra training is doing more harm than good. We need a break. Downtime until tomorrow morning.”
“We need more training,” Marsh insisted. “With the timetable ramped up, we can’t be lax.”
“We know the basics.” I hated arguing with Marsh. As well as our second-in-command, he was my partner. My lover.
My loyalty had to be to the team.
Tom looked at me. “The schedule says—”
I fixed him with my best leader’s stare—the one Marsh compared to shards of ice. “I don’t give a rip what the schedule says. We need downtime. I’ll take care of things with the Powers That Be. You guys go somewhere and chill.”
So even though Sara can be silly and joke, she isn’t afraid to step up and take charge.
There’s the team that hopes to find a new home for Earth’s inhabitants. With all the disasters back home, an evacuation may soon be in the picture.
