Jessica E. Subject’s Writing Update ~ Birthday Parties, Hospitals, and a FREE ebook!

Hello! It’s Tuesday, and time for this week’s Weekly Writing Update. This past week, I have spent most of it getting ready for my son’s birthday party. And just when I thought I’d have a chance to catch up, and maybe rest, I ended up taking my daughter to the hospital. It’s only a minor issue, but the issue is going to take us back to the hospital at least twice more before it’s dealt with. I’m on my last week of the 22 day push up challenge to bring awareness to the number of military men and women ending their lives everyday after trying to cope with PTSD.

#8Sunday: The Erebus are back on Hemera ~ Excerpt from BRYCE #scifi #romance

Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!

I’m sticking with BRYCE until the end of the month. Last week I shared the identity of the Defender who was in the middle of the swarm of Erebus. I assure you, he is very much alive, and plays an important role in a future Galactic Defenders story.  This week, I’m going to give you more from Lalia’s POV. While Bryce was on the battlefield, she returned to Hemera with the goal of bringing changes to the planet. But, things don’t go as planned…  (edited from published version to fit)

The Erebus calls grew louder, the sound piercing her eardrums. They got closer, probably going room to room, exactly what they’d done during the last attack. She had to get her daughter away from the palace, far from the Erebus’s reign of terror.

“There’re more of them than what attacked our house, aren’t there?”

The look of horror on Katrina’s face fed her urgency. She nodded, her finger to her lips. If the creatures heard them, they’d have little chance to escape. “When I stop, you stop. When I run, you run. Do not try to take one on, because there’ll be at least five more nearby, understood?”

#8Sunday: Tortured by the Erebus ~ Excerpt from BRYCE #scifi #romance

Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!

I’m going to stick with BRYCE until the end of the month.  By then BEYOND REACH should be ready to start sharing. In last week’s excerpt, Bryce was at a real battle scene with his squad, and there was a Defender in the distance who was surrounded by Erebus. I’m continuing with that scene… (edited from published version)

Two Erebus stood on either side of the Defender, their tentacles wrapped around his arms and legs, like they wanted to pull him apart. Playing, no tormenting him.

Bryce fired, never letting up on the trigger. He’d seen the creatures kill before but not torture their prey. Absolutely unheard of.

The Erebus dropped the Defender before they slumped to the ground, dead. But, he hoped the man in the blood-stained blue fatigues between them had survived. The rest of Echo downed any remaining enemies, plowing a path for him to retrieve the fallen Defender.

The lapel on the shredded suit read Jager. Bryce touched the kid’s neck and found a pulse.

I am very excited to help with the cover and trailer reveal to this exciting new sci-fi romance anthology (available October 11) for many reasons. The first time I heard about Pets In Space, I was asked to read one of the fabulous stories included: Spark of Attraction by Cara Bristol. Raising Awareness for PTSD one push up at a time #22pushupchallenge

22 Push Up Challenge

Hello readers! How many of you have read a military romance, whether contemporary or sci-fi? I know I have read many of them in both categories.

Now, how many of you have watched American Sniper? I did without a political mindset, and saw how PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) can affect those who serve, and their families. Unfortunately, some of the military men and woman who are affected by PTSD are not able to find the help they need. Twenty-two commit suicide every day in the US. In Canada, there are comparable numbers of men and women suffering from PTSD. And it hit close to home recently for me.

The 22 Push Up Challenge was started to bring awareness to this tragic issue. Push ups alone won’t solve the problem, but it is a simple and fun way to get the word out about a matter that more people need to be aware of. These brave men and women put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and it’s tragic so many veterans feel suicide is the only way.

I have been going to fitness classes at a local studio for over a year now, and on August 4th, my trainer challenged me to the 22 Push Up Challenge. I accepted. That means, I will do 22 push ups a day for 22 days. When I do them, I have somebody take video of me doing them, and I post the videos to my Facebook profile and Instagram account. Then, I challenge someone else each day.
