He signaled the android and motioned to their empty glasses. “Bill these to my room.”
“I’m more than capable of paying for my own drink.” She huffed.
He confirmed with the android. “My tab.” He motioned for Amanda to lead the way out of the lounge. “We’ll work out the details later. We can arm wrestle for it.”
“Don’t think I couldn’t win.”
“If let you.”
“There’s a word for men like you.”
“Gentlemanly?”
“Chauvinist.”
“Why are you coming with me, then?”
“I didn’t say you don’t exude a certain raw, he-man charm.”
Amusement rumbled up from his belly in an explosion of genuine enjoyment. Son of a bitch, he wished he had more time. A rare pang of regret shot through him. Cy-Ops had been good to him, and he didn’t regret this career path, considering what his alternatives might have been. The lives of those he’d helped—were better for it. But, yeah, sometimes he wished he had a woman waiting for him. He had a hunch from this point forward, when he pictured that imaginary woman, she would have Amanda’s face.
“Thank you,” he said, and rubbed the scar cutting a bare swath through facial stubble.
“What happened?” she asked.
“The scar?”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t grow up in the best part of town. A gang of thugs who thought they were hot shit roamed the neighborhood, spoiling for a fight. They rarely had trouble starting one.”
“You were attacked?”
He shook his head. “I was one of them.” He traced the thickened, puckered skin. “I deserved this.” He’d omitted he’d started the fight in defense of his sister. It mattered little his motives had been inculpable that time. One good deed did not undo a multitude of bad ones. With his disreputable background, he hadn’t sought medical attention. His facial wound hadn’t healed properly, and he’d been left with a significant scar. Still, he’d survived life on the streets and emerged less scathed than some. Than his sister.
He fingered the souvenir of a misspent adolescence. “I’d like to say this ended my association, but I can’t. I was a slow learner, I guess.” Not to mention a thug. A gang member. A criminal.
“So, what got you out of it?” She halted and peered up at him. The top of her head would graze his chin if he were to hold her. Which he wanted to do. Horizontally, while she clenched around him. “I assume you’re out of it?”
“Yes. You’re not in any danger with me.”
“You don’t worry me.”
“Because you think you can kick my ass like you did the Malodonian?”

Chapter One
“What do you mean, you want to stay?”
Frey balled his fists and watched the Mission Commander’s face turn from blue to purple to red. But he refused to step onto the ship. “Exactly that. I don’t want to return to Ginnun. I’ve spent one rotation around the sun here, established myself in their culture, and lived like one of them. And I’ll continue to do so. This is my home now.”
“One rotation is hardly long enough to call this place home. Besides, you’ve sworn your life to the Space Service.” As his MC’s eyes hardened further, Frey noticed all the wrinkles in the man’s once again blue face. His white hair stood up straight on an oversized head. If he remained with the Space Service, the stress of the job would age him exactly the same way.
“This is my last mission. I’ll be discharged when I return.” Frey wouldn’t receive any compensation for this mission, but Space Service credits were of no use on Earth.
“The only way to get out of the Service is to apply for mating. Won’t Tandee be waiting for your return?”
His stomach clenched upon hearing her name. “On the day we left, she confessed to already mating with Brand, my supposed best friend.”
The Commander only raised his eyebrow. Frey didn’t expect any compassion from him. “Ouch! So that’s why you failed to keep your emotions in check on the trip to Earth.”
He looked away. Even after his time on this planet, the memory of that day still stung. She’d flaunted her admission without a hint of regret.
“There are many other females on Ginnun who would take you as a mate.”
Frey looked back to the Mission Commander and shook his head. “I don’t want an emotionless relationship. When I choose a mate, I need to want to be with her. I want a mate for more than just procreation. I want to love.”
“Emotions just get in the way of your life.” His MC slammed his fist against the ship. “You’re our best field informant! If you’re leaving the Service, you could easily find yourself on the High Council. You don’t want to throw away your future for the overly sensitive women here on Earth.”
“It’s not just the women. I have friends here, not just acquaintances, as everyone is to me on Ginnun.” Many people he’d trusted on Ginnun wound up stabbing him in the back, as in his best friend who slept with his intended without any guilt. Returning to a planet of long-dead emotions held no appeal after living on Earth. He refused to hide his feelings again, and there were so many more he wanted to experience.
The Mission Commander signaled to the pilot to start the engines. “Stop this nonsense and get on the ship.”
“No.” He grabbed his sack and without remorse, turned his back on his Ginnunian heritage.

#8Sunday: The Defender she loved. Excerpt from BRYCE (Galactic Defenders) #books #sfr #romance
Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!
BRYCE has released. And I’m going to continue to share excerpts from this story for another couple of weeks. So far, you’ve met Bryce, Lindsay, Quinn, and Katrina. Well, I’m skipping ahead in the scene to a moment of recognition.
“You are not the last of your kind, Lalia.” He stroked the soft spot behind her ear, a sure sign of affection.
“Bryce?” She jumped to her feet and turned to face the Defender. He had to be the man she remembered, though older and more battle weary. No one else would dare caress her in such a manner, especially one who knew her true identity.
He nodded, and she fought to contain the urge to jump into his arms. She’d never expected to see him again or, if she did, thought he wouldn’t remember her or even care to as her mother had tried to convince her.
“Your brother now rules the planet, and I can take you there. But we must leave now.”

I don’t have anything that fits in the My Sexy Boss category, so I’m going to use the one above to celebrate my new release, BRYCE.
Setup: Bryce found Lalia on Earth, and the Alliance is taking Lalia and her daughter back to Hemera. Lalia has asked them to take her anywhere else, but Bryce has convinced her to return to Hemera and try to make the changes she wanted to as a teen…
“Lalia, I’m a Defender. While I might be granted retirement, it will take some time.” He ran his palm along her cheek, brushing his thumb over her lips. “As much as I want to spend every minute with you, I can’t make that commitment yet. I’m giving you the opportunity to fall in love again without worrying about me.”
“But I only want you.” In every way possible.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded, chewing her bottom lip.
“Good.” He untied her belt and let the robe fall open. “Because I want you.”
He slipped her robe from her shoulders and let it fall to her feet. “I always have. Always will.” Brushing his lips along her neck, he made her feel young again, like a rebellious princess falling in love for the first time. A spell she would willingly fall under time and time again with the man who had stolen her heart many years ago.
Lalia moaned his name. “Promise me you’ll be with me when we land on Hemera, help me through the first couple of days.” She couldn’t do it without him, had no will to return without him by her side.

Happy Wednesday! It’s time for Mid Week Tease. Today, I’m sharing an excerpt from BRYCE, which released yesterday. Enjoy!
Setup: I’ve been sharing excerpts from the first scene in BRYCE as part of Weekend Writing Warriors. This excerpt is still part of the first scene, but in Lindsay’s (or Lalia’s) point of view…
Lindsay shivered as the Kalaren Galactic Defender eyed her, his brow ridge prominent in his look of disdain. Glancing away from his stare, she pressed her temples. She never should have escaped to this planet. Her fate was to die like everyone else back home, not to pretend to be a Terran, to have a life when none of her kind survived the Erebus attacks on Hemera. They had to have followed her to Earth somehow, and now they would destroy those she knew, and eventually all of Earth.
The Kalaren slammed Katrina’s knife on the table. “Where did you get a zuranium blade?”
“It is an heirloom belonging to my family for generations.” Turning her back to him, she pulled her hair aside, exposing the back of her neck. “I’m the only Hemera to survive the Erebus attack.”
Her daughter gasped beside her. “What the hell does that mean? Mom, you said those spots were just a bunch of birthmarks we shared. What’s going on?”
“Give me a minute, and I’ll explain everything.” The truth wouldn’t be easy for her daughter to hear. Not after growing up believing she belonged on the planet.
“Impossible.” The Defender moved behind Lindsay and ran his fingers along the back of her neck, over her people’s markings, a bold move for a stranger, especially one not from Earth. His touch sent a thrill through her body, one she hadn’t experienced for a long time. Not since Quinn had last made love to her, a year before he’d presented her with divorce papers. Though her ex-husband—visiting to celebrate Katrina’s eighteenth birthday and now dead on the deck outside the patio window—had never been able to penetrate the part of her heart belonging to a man from her past, and from the same planet as the Kalaren touching her.
“You are a Comosova. You’re royalty.” The Kalaren moved in front of her and bent down on one knee with a quick bow of his head. “Lalia, I am very sorry I failed to save your partner. I should have been there to defend him, and I failed.”
Comosova? Lalia? How did he know her former identity? Lindsay hooked a finger under the Kalaren’s chin and lifted until his gaze met hers. She stared into his eyes, looking for something familiar. A long time ago, she’d fallen in love with a Kalaren Defender, but her parents had convinced her she provided a diversion for him, believed Kalarens stole the innocence of women all over the universe before moving on to the next pretty face. Had the man she’d given her virginity to, the one who’d stolen her heart, found her again on this planet?
“Mom, what’s going on?” Katrina slapped her hands on the table. “What were those ugly things in the backyard? What did they do to Dad?”
Lindsay tucked memories of her first love away. She turned in her chair and gazed across the table to her daughter who had been adopted by Quinn the day of her birth. After the divorce, her ex-husband only showed up on Katrina’s birthdays. And, over all those years, Lindsay had tried to keep her heritage from Katrina. What child wanted to know her mother came from another planet? Or could keep the fact a secret? She refused to have her daughter taken by children’s services because they believed her an unfit mother. But, after today, her daughter needed to know the truth. “The Erebus invaded my home planet of Hemera. I saw my parents murdered, and then, before I could comprehend the loss, the attack on the planet, my handler whisked me away to Earth. She didn’t survive the flight, so I am the last of my kind.”
“Not so.” The Kalaren rested his hands on her shoulders and began to lightly massage. Another bold move. Could he possibly be the Defender she remembered?

Bryce kicked a stray Erebus tentacle as he passed the creature. Immediately after he’d sent Lalia and her daughter through the wormhole, three of the aliens had busted down the front door and barged inside. Without the two women to worry about, he’d downed every one of the Erebus and established a perimeter at the front of the house.
“Here’s my report.” He tapped his tablet to the one belonging to Pollux, a Warwa who’d recently joined the cleanup crew and quickly risen to the top field position.
Pollux nodded. “I heard the lost princess of Hemera lived here. Who would have guessed she’d fled to Earth?”
Bryce’s thought, too. He’d searched for her a long time after the Erebus attack on Hemera, refused to believe she’d been killed along with her parents. Without anyone finding any trace of what might have once been her body, he continued to listen for rumors of her whereabouts with every mission. But the trail had remained cold no matter which planet he visited.
“Yeah, I’ve gotta get to her and her daughter.” Bryce jerked a thumb over his shoulder. “Sent them through a wormhole to the safe house. You’re okay if I leave you?”
“Yes.” Pollux pulled his tablet to his chest. “You secured the perimeter, and we haven’t seen anything for hours anyway.”
“Great, thanks.” He pulled out his wormhole maker, WHM, ready to press the button to go to Lalia.
“Major, wait!” Pollux nodded toward the back of the house. “What do you want me to do about the deceased?”
Glancing out the patio doors, Bryce sighed at the sight of the thick black puddle formerly a man named Quinn. “The only thing you can do. Clean him up and create a cover story to explain the disappearance of the family.”
“Got it.” Pollux nodded then waved.
Bryce clicked the WHM and launched himself into the wormhole. He’d left Lalia too long, had so many questions for her. Yet, he dreaded having to face her. Over the years, he’d forgotten the feelings he’d had for her, what it felt like to run his hands over her soft curves, savor her quiet moans as they made love. Seeing her again brought everything rushing back, distracting him from his purpose. And because he hadn’t been fully alert, an Erebus had gotten past him and killed the man who had made Lalia happy, had given her a family. Something he’d never had the chance to do.
