#MidWeekTease: She grew up believing she belonged in BRYCE #sfr #romance #books
Happy Wednesday! It’s time for Mid Week Tease. Today, I’m sharing an excerpt from BRYCE, which released yesterday. Enjoy!
Setup: I’ve been sharing excerpts from the first scene in BRYCE as part of Weekend Writing Warriors. This excerpt is still part of the first scene, but in Lindsay’s (or Lalia’s) point of view…
Lindsay shivered as the Kalaren Galactic Defender eyed her, his brow ridge prominent in his look of disdain. Glancing away from his stare, she pressed her temples. She never should have escaped to this planet. Her fate was to die like everyone else back home, not to pretend to be a Terran, to have a life when none of her kind survived the Erebus attacks on Hemera. They had to have followed her to Earth somehow, and now they would destroy those she knew, and eventually all of Earth.
The Kalaren slammed Katrina’s knife on the table. “Where did you get a zuranium blade?”
“It is an heirloom belonging to my family for generations.” Turning her back to him, she pulled her hair aside, exposing the back of her neck. “I’m the only Hemera to survive the Erebus attack.”
Her daughter gasped beside her. “What the hell does that mean? Mom, you said those spots were just a bunch of birthmarks we shared. What’s going on?”
“Give me a minute, and I’ll explain everything.” The truth wouldn’t be easy for her daughter to hear. Not after growing up believing she belonged on the planet.
“Impossible.” The Defender moved behind Lindsay and ran his fingers along the back of her neck, over her people’s markings, a bold move for a stranger, especially one not from Earth. His touch sent a thrill through her body, one she hadn’t experienced for a long time. Not since Quinn had last made love to her, a year before he’d presented her with divorce papers. Though her ex-husband—visiting to celebrate Katrina’s eighteenth birthday and now dead on the deck outside the patio window—had never been able to penetrate the part of her heart belonging to a man from her past, and from the same planet as the Kalaren touching her.
“You are a Comosova. You’re royalty.” The Kalaren moved in front of her and bent down on one knee with a quick bow of his head. “Lalia, I am very sorry I failed to save your partner. I should have been there to defend him, and I failed.”
Comosova? Lalia? How did he know her former identity? Lindsay hooked a finger under the Kalaren’s chin and lifted until his gaze met hers. She stared into his eyes, looking for something familiar. A long time ago, she’d fallen in love with a Kalaren Defender, but her parents had convinced her she provided a diversion for him, believed Kalarens stole the innocence of women all over the universe before moving on to the next pretty face. Had the man she’d given her virginity to, the one who’d stolen her heart, found her again on this planet?
“Mom, what’s going on?” Katrina slapped her hands on the table. “What were those ugly things in the backyard? What did they do to Dad?”
Lindsay tucked memories of her first love away. She turned in her chair and gazed across the table to her daughter who had been adopted by Quinn the day of her birth. After the divorce, her ex-husband only showed up on Katrina’s birthdays. And, over all those years, Lindsay had tried to keep her heritage from Katrina. What child wanted to know her mother came from another planet? Or could keep the fact a secret? She refused to have her daughter taken by children’s services because they believed her an unfit mother. But, after today, her daughter needed to know the truth. “The Erebus invaded my home planet of Hemera. I saw my parents murdered, and then, before I could comprehend the loss, the attack on the planet, my handler whisked me away to Earth. She didn’t survive the flight, so I am the last of my kind.”
“Not so.” The Kalaren rested his hands on her shoulders and began to lightly massage. Another bold move. Could he possibly be the Defender she remembered?

NEW RELEASE THANK YOUS…
As with any new release, there are many people to thank who helped me along the way. With this story, I must first and foremost thank author Deborah Cooke. Her guidance and prodding to get this story written the way it should have been all along, I am immensely grateful for. Thank you to my fabulous cover artist at Fantasia Frog Designs, who started this series off with a spectacular cover. I cannot wait to see the next ones! And thank you to my wonderful editor, Kate Richards, who helped me to make this story shine.
Thank you to Alisha Robinson for beta reading this story and to Michelle Willms, Abe Ocfemia, Kacey Hammell, and Taryn Kincaid from my reader group who helped me to name one of the bad guys in the story. (I still have a list of the names, and one of them may be the title of a future Galactic Defenders book.) Thank you, as always, to my amazing family, for your patience and understanding, especially when I’m lost in the worlds I like to create. And THANK YOU, dear reader, for taking a chance on a new series. I hope you love my Defenders!
Bryce kicked a stray Erebus tentacle as he passed the creature. Immediately after he’d sent Lalia and her daughter through the wormhole, three of the aliens had busted down the front door and barged inside. Without the two women to worry about, he’d downed every one of the Erebus and established a perimeter at the front of the house.
“Here’s my report.” He tapped his tablet to the one belonging to Pollux, a Warwa who’d recently joined the cleanup crew and quickly risen to the top field position.
Pollux nodded. “I heard the lost princess of Hemera lived here. Who would have guessed she’d fled to Earth?”
Bryce’s thought, too. He’d searched for her a long time after the Erebus attack on Hemera, refused to believe she’d been killed along with her parents. Without anyone finding any trace of what might have once been her body, he continued to listen for rumors of her whereabouts with every mission. But the trail had remained cold no matter which planet he visited.
“Yeah, I’ve gotta get to her and her daughter.” Bryce jerked a thumb over his shoulder. “Sent them through a wormhole to the safe house. You’re okay if I leave you?”
“Yes.” Pollux pulled his tablet to his chest. “You secured the perimeter, and we haven’t seen anything for hours anyway.”
“Great, thanks.” He pulled out his wormhole maker, WHM, ready to press the button to go to Lalia.
“Major, wait!” Pollux nodded toward the back of the house. “What do you want me to do about the deceased?”
Glancing out the patio doors, Bryce sighed at the sight of the thick black puddle formerly a man named Quinn. “The only thing you can do. Clean him up and create a cover story to explain the disappearance of the family.”
“Got it.” Pollux nodded then waved.
Bryce clicked the WHM and launched himself into the wormhole. He’d left Lalia too long, had so many questions for her. Yet, he dreaded having to face her. Over the years, he’d forgotten the feelings he’d had for her, what it felt like to run his hands over her soft curves, savor her quiet moans as they made love. Seeing her again brought everything rushing back, distracting him from his purpose. And because he hadn’t been fully alert, an Erebus had gotten past him and killed the man who had made Lalia happy, had given her a family. Something he’d never had the chance to do.
Not only am I celebrating the release of BRYCE, the first book in my Galactic Defenders series, I am also celebrating FIVE years published on July 1st. And I’m offering three fabulous prize packages. Contests are open as stated, except where prohibited by law. Must be 18 or older to enter. Contest will close July 24, and winners will be notified by email. Good luck!

#8Sunday: She came out of nowhere. Excerpt from BRYCE (Galactic Defenders) #books #sfr #romance
Welcome to another Weekend Writing Warriors post!
This month, I’m continuing to share excerpts from BRYCE: Galactic Defenders Book One. The story is formatted for print and ebook, and pre-order links for the ebook are below. Yay!
Sorry for any confusion with last week’s excerpt. I cut out some sentences to introduce a new character and show what happened to him. Quinn was Lindsay’s ex-husband, visiting to celebrate Katrina’s birthday. Who is Katrina? She’s Lindsay’s daughter. In this excerpt, you get to meet her…
At the same moment Bryce readied his weapon, a younger woman raced out of the house, holding a knife above her head. She launched off the deck, flying through the air toward the moving alien. Before he could get a shot off, she plunged the knife into the back of the Erebus, dropping the creature to the ground.
What in Gaspra? Bryce stared, stunned by what he’d witnessed. She could only have killed the creature with a zuranium blade, metal not believed to exist on Earth.
Yet, Bryce had no time to confirm. He needed to secure the yard then get the two women to a safe house. They had already seen him and the Erebus. Pollux and his squad couldn’t erase what the Terrans had witnessed, but he could protect them from another attack.

#MySexySaturday: Celebrating Freedom in NEVER GONNA SAY GOODBYE #books #sfr #romance
Hello and welcome to the 147th week of My Sexy Saturday.
Here are the details: every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words, sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.
Today’s theme is…
MY SEXY CELEBRATION
For today’s post, I’m sharing an excerpt from NEVER GONNA SAY GOODBYE, a sensual sci-fi romance.
Setup: At the end of the Underground series, Planet Core has fallen, and the metropolis once controlled by the corporation is now called Newry. While there have been many changes to the land, there are also changes happening to individual people and couples…
Will heard the joy in their voices before they burst out of the doctor’s office.
Warmth temporarily filled his soul. “I’m guessing you have good news?”
Brook nodded, her eyes glassy. “I’m pregnant.”
Wrapping her and Melina in a big hug, he squeezed them tight. “I’m so happy for you both, so glad the insemination took.”
Many other young couples around the city had children on the way, pregnancy no longer restricted by the government. But, up until two months ago, Brook believed giving birth to a child would never happen for her. She didn’t think she could have both the love of her life and a baby. Since pregnancy had been restricted for so long, adoption wasn’t even an option.
After he’d learned of her desire, he searched for a donor, a man consenting to help them have a child, but willing to give up all rights. He hadn’t told her who, only about the possibility of AI. Once she and Melina agreed to the process, he arranged the details.
“Now, you must celebrate.” He smiled, confidant of what he had to do next. They were happy, and it was finally time for him to be as well.
Time to celebrate. #Excerpt from NEVER GONNA SAY GOODBYE by Jessica E. Subject

ONE YEAR: A flash fiction piece about two women in love #LoveisLove #LGBTQ
I wrote this super short story a couple months ago to submit to an anthology. It didn’t get accepted, so I decided to post it on my blog, since it’s such a short piece. Enjoy!
ONE YEAR
by Jessica E. Subject
Flight. It had always been Priya’s passion, her first love. And it was taking my girlfriend away from me.
I’d met Priya at the same cafe I now sat in, and watched on my laptop as she shuffled across the tarmac with the other two astronauts at the space center. We’d already said our own goodbye, away from media and prying eyes. Though her parents and closest friends knew we’d been dating for a couple years, Priya didn’t want the circus of reporters to focus on her sexuality and the woman she’d left behind. They had already turned her mission into a spectacle. When she returned, Priya would hold the record for the longest time in space for any female. She simply wanted to perform her assigned duties, help inspire future generations of space travelers, and act as a gateway to the establishment of human colonies beyond Earth.
I set my coffee down and plugged in my headphones to avoid bothering other patrons, while I waited for her last interview to begin. Arriving at the podium, Priya waved, her smile warming my heart, and probably that of many others watching elsewhere. Each astronaut recited their personal mission goals along with a list of some of the spacewalks and repairs that would occur in cooperation with those already aboard the ISS. Without the usual mass of reporters, they did not have to deal with a barrage of questions. They were about to leave Earth. But just before Priya turned to follow her crewmates toward the launch pad, she stared into the camera. “I love you, Bridget.”
Bottom lip quivering, I gripped the edge of the table, trying to hold back tears. She loved me, and admitted it to the world. Now, I had to wait one year to hold her again.

#MidWeekTease: From his daydreams to his bedroom in BEYOND REACH #sfr #romance #books
Happy Wednesday! It’s time for Mid Week Tease. This month, I’m sharing excerpts from Beyond Reach, one of my upcoming sci-fi romance stories. Here’s another excerpt…
Setup: This excerpt continues from last week. Aris is daydreaming about Xia, whom he met in the street, while he is waiting for his Suavita to arrive. When she arrives, there is something familiar about her…
“Xia? You’re my Suavita?” Could he get any luckier? His heart hammered in his chest. He didn’t have to imagine anything. The woman he’d planned to fantasize about, had always fantasized about, stood in front of him.
“Yes, I am.” She kept her tone curt, distancing. “Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to get started. Please get up on the table, sir.”
Her accentuated last word stung. What had he done to piss her off?
“I haven’t stopped thinking about you since I saw you this afternoon.” Gods, could he sound any more immature?
But his words seemed to soften Xia’s glare, and she tilted her head to the side. “I’m surprised, considering you couldn’t wait to get here and have fun with your Suavita.”
What the Tenebrae? “Yes, Terran, but you are my Suavita.”
If her eyes held lasers, he’d be ashes on the floor.
“I can easily find a replacement if I’m not to your liking.”
Quite the opposite. He slid off the bed. Stepping forward, he brushed a hand down her tanned arm. She belonged with him on Carbae, not here to provide pleasure for others. Where had that thought come from?
She wouldn’t be accepted in his kingdom. She was Terran. Right now, he didn’t care. “I don’t want anyone else. I want you.” And he’d give her as much pleasure as she gave him, more even.
She didn’t shy away, but calmed down against him. Cupping her cheek in his hand, he ran his thumb along her full pink lips. He couldn’t wait to taste them, have them around his cock. Gods, she drove him wild.
He leaned forward to savor her luscious lips, but she pulled away with a whimper. “I can’t do this.”
“But you’re a Suavita. This is what you’re paid to do.” He wanted the experience to be more than an obligation. Having the night end before it began didn’t work for him.
She gazed down at her feet. “This is my first overnight appointment. I…I’m not used to kissing and all that. Only a massage followed by your pleasure.”
A beautiful woman like her had never been kissed before, and on Culva of all places? How was that possible? “You can take the lead then. But join me on the bed.”
