On Wasting My Talent and Writing Trash
The other day one of the closest people to me in my life told me I was "wasting my talent" and "writing trash." I was floored by this. This same person had hugged me after my first sale, congratulated me on my first review and told me how proud they were of me. I can't really put into words how much it hurt to hear this. I felt like he'd lied to me. When I confronted him, he told me he was proud of me … proud that I am pursuing a goal, proud of my drive to succeed and proud of my resulting...

BDSM: Authority, equality or what?
I was reading a post the other day on a blog I follow, Obedience with Grace, who is a slave in an M/s relationship wherein she was discussing the notion that there is no such thing as equality in any type of dominance/submission relationship and that submissives who feel they are equal to their masters are wrong. This got me thinking and I replied to Grace with the basic idea that equality is not relevant in BDSM; it's about authority and role.
I've continued to think about this since then...

Gabrielle Bissett Dishes on Crossing Genres
Please join me in welcoming author, Gabrielle Bissett, to Black Door Press. Gabrielle will also give one luck commenter a free copy of Love's Master … a scorching read … trust me on that! The giveaway will run until September 22. Don't miss out!
As a writer, I must choose which genre my writing best belongs in, and sometimes that's not so easy. For me, crossing genres is a common occurrence. Well, technically, it's crossing sub-genres. I always write under the romance umbrella, but my...

The Wounded Warrior Poet
What is it about men with wounded souls that make them so appealing? Over the years, I've found that I gravitate to stories were the male protagonist has a wounded soul. Maybe his heart was broken, maybe he committed some sin in his past that he's still atoning for, but either way he is in need of a good woman to heal his soul. Within that, I find I'm looking for a badass … a guy who can kick some serious ass in one minute and quote Shakespeare in the next. In other words, the quintessential ...

Pornography vs. Erotica

Michelangelo's David
I participate on several listservs for erotica authors. Recently, my list mates and I have been discussing the fact that several of my fellow authors have had their Paypal accounts frozen and their money confiscated because Paypal determined they were pornographers and the selling of pornography violates Paypal's Terms & Conditions. This got me to thinking about the difference between porn and erotica.
I am quite sure that many people would say there is no difference at...

Institutionalized Infidelity
As I explore more of the erotica genre, I am surprised to see how often infidelity plays a role in the story. Typically, I find this in the vanilla stories I read. The story will be lush and erotic, two people coming together in passion exploring each other sexually. Maybe they're strangers, maybe it's a little kinky and then … BAM … the mention of the wife or significant other. Immediately, I feel cheated and wish I hadn't read the story.
I don't understand why infidelity has become...

Power in Submission
I recently had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with a lovely intellectual and thought-provoking blog by Oscar Hokeah, a Native American writer and Master's degree student. In one of his recent posts, he initiated a lively exchange on Foucault's polyvalence as put forth in the History of Sexuality. Being that it's been 20 years since I set foot on a college campus and even then I was a chemistry major, I had to resort to the old tried and true trick for understanding this … I looked up...
