Brain Health and Sleep

Brain Health and Sleep497S10a-i2.0

It is critical that we support our circadian rhythms to enable good sleep cycles. But today we are bombarded by these wavelengths of blue and green light all day long.

In the evening when the sun is down and we should natural be setting our circadian clocks for sleep, we have interior lights, computer screens, TVs, phones and more that are bombarding our eyes with these critical blue and green wavelengths of light and interrupting our circadian clocks. If you have trouble falling asleep, adding glasses that block these wavelengths of blue and green light can be the key to naturally falling asleep better and getting better sleep.

We have written about this for a while. A few years ago in our “The 30 Day Ketogenic Cleanse” book and more recently in our book “Keto.“. But with further understanding of how blue AND green light at certain wavelengths can effect sleep, we searched for glasses that would block all the wavelengths to enable natural sleep cycles to improve.

Here are some key takeaways from the studies on the eye light receptor:

446–477nm was identified as having the strongest effect on melatonin suppression. You need to make sure 100% from 446-477nm is blocked after darkPolychromatic action spectra were reasonably consistent in indicating that the spectral region between 450 and 550nm provides the strongest stimulation of circadian and neuroendocrine responses. What this means is the wavelengths of light between 400-550nm should be completely blocked for optimal melatonin secretion after dark.Past studies have shown that the peak wavelength sensitivity was 555nm (Rodieck, 1998) (5). Previous data (Brainard et al, 2001) (6) and those presented in the 2001 study (4) do not support this hypothesis. The results clearly demonstrate that 555nm is significantly weaker in suppressing melatonin. This is a great study for determining the optimal range of artificial light to block after dark and the study results and graph clearly suggests that the major disruption zone for melatonin is between 400-550nm with a peak between 446-477nm. It is clear we must block 100% blue and green light from 400-550nm to have optimal melatonin secretion after dark. Almost every blue light blocking pair of glasses on the market does not do this. A cross section of test results from a spectrometer have been released that show just this (7).

We searched for a company that made glasses that blocked 100% of these blue and green wavelengths. We found the company called BLUblox. They make glasses that block 100% of the blue and green wavelengths needed to naturally allow your body to produce melatonin.

When you get a good night’s rest your body has adequate time to repair and rejuvenate.

TOP 10 TIPS for QUALITY SLEEPAvoid sugar and foods high in carbohydrates, like popcorn, chips, and ice cream, especially in the evening hours. It causes low quality sleep and it stalls our metabolism. When blood sugar rises too much, it falls too low, causing you to wake up because of low blood sugar and hunger.Add in salt before bedtime. When people start the keto diet, or start to do longer fasting, sleep often suffers. One reason is because lack of sodium levels in the evening really interferes with quality sleep! Follow a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and rising at the same time. I know I sound like a loser, but I’m usually in bed by 8:30pm and rise at 6am.Before bed do something to relax your muscles and your mind (meditation, gentle stretching, yoga or deep breathing exercises).Reduce or eliminate caffeine (chocolate has caffeine, so beware). Despite working at coffee shops since I was 15 years old, I cut out all coffee and caffeine and never felt better!Darken your bedroom with heavy drapes. We have black-out blinds.Turn the heat down. We often sleep with the windows cracked open even in the winter; I sleep the best at about 57-60 degrees.Try cold therapy before bed. I do cold therapy nightly to cool my body down to help with mitochondria health and increasing sleep.Women: Get your progesterone level tested. I often see women that can fall asleep, but wake up in the middle of the night. I have helped copious amounts of women get good sleep with natural supplements to help with hormone health.WEAR BON CHARGE blue blocking glasses! I usually put my BON CHARGE blue blocking glasses on around 5pm. Yep, 5pm! It is best to stop blocking all the blue light about 2-3 hours before bedtime to allow the body to naturally produce melatonin. With stylish blue blocking glasses you can start wearing them in the evening while still hanging out with friends. They even make a good conversation starter! You are biohacking your sleep. 🙂Bon Charge is so generous when you use code MARIA, you get 20% OFF!Click HERE to get yourself a stylish pair of BON CHARGE glasses!

Peptides play a vital role in appetite regulation, metabolism, and fat burning, making them valuable allies in weight loss journeys. Here are three noteworthy peptides:

Melanotan II (MT-II): MT-II has shown potential in suppressing appetite and promoting weight loss through its effects on the central nervous system[^1]. Research suggests that MT-II stimulates the melanocortin system, leading to reduced food intake and increased energy expenditure.Ghrelin Modulators: Peptides such as growth hormone-releasing peptides (GHRPs) and ghrelin receptor agonists have demonstrated the ability to influence hunger and satiety signals[^2]. These peptides can help regulate appetite, promote fat loss, and improve body composition.CJC-1295: CJC-1295, a growth hormone-releasing hormone analog, has been studied for its impact on body weight and composition. It has shown potential in promoting fat loss and preserving lean muscle mass[^3].Peptide Therapy for Skin Health

Peptides have gained significant attention in the field of skincare due to their ability to promote collagen synthesis, improve skin elasticity, and reduce the signs of aging. Here are three notable peptides:

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4: Also known as Matrixyl, this peptide has demonstrated the ability to stimulate collagen production, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture[^4].Copper Peptides: Copper peptides have shown remarkable wound-healing properties and can enhance the synthesis of collagen and elastin. They also possess antioxidant effects, aiding in skin rejuvenation and protection[^5].Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7: These peptides, often combined in skincare formulations, can improve skin elasticity and reduce inflammation. They have shown potential in minimizing signs of aging and improving overall skin health[^6].Peptide Therapy for Bone Health

Maintaining strong and healthy bones is crucial for preventing age-related conditions such as osteoporosis. Peptides can play a significant role in bone formation and strength. Here are three peptides with promising effects:

Parathyroid Hormone (PTH): PTH analogs, such as Teriparatide, have been widely studied for their ability to stimulate bone formation, increase bone mineral density, and reduce fracture risk[^7].Osteocalcin Peptides: Osteocalcin is a peptide involved in regulating bone metabolism. Certain osteocalcin-derived peptides have shown potential in enhancing bone formation and improving bone strength[^8].Thymosin Beta-4 (TB-4): TB-4 is a peptide known for its tissue-repairing properties. It has demonstrated potential in promoting bone healing and regeneration in preclinical studies[^9].Conclusion

Peptide therapy offers a remarkable avenue for optimizing weight loss, skin health, bone strength, and more. The peptides mentioned in this article represent just a fraction of the vast possibilities in this field. As always, it is crucial to consult with a knowledgeable healthcare professional to determine the most suitable peptide therapies for your specific needs. Embrace the power of peptides and embark on a journey toward enhanced well-being.

Carnivore Chicken Parmesan

Carnivore Chicken Parmesan

I love chicken parmesan but you know what makes it even better??? Alfredo sauce!

So I made a carnivore alfredo sauce to serve with my Carnivore Chicken Parmesan and it was absolutely mouth watering!

WHERE TO GET INGREDIENTS FOR CARNIVORE CHICKEN PARMESAN

If you haven’t noticed, I do not allow advertising on my site.

I just didn’t agree with some of the products that were advertised. They were keto products, but they were unhealthy and I would never personally eat most of the products. It was hard to say no to blog advertisements; they pay thousands of dollars a month, but I just felt uncomfortable about having the products I didn’t recommend on my website.

Instead, I have created a shopping list where you can find all the healthy ingredients that are difficult to find in the grocery store (and if you do find them, they are often very expensive).

I have done a lot of detective work and found the lowest prices on for all of the products I use and love. Everything from food, pantry items, kitchen tools, supplements, and skin products are on my list.

I rarely waste time in the grocery store because I find everything online for a way better price!

All you have to do is click on the words in my recipes and it will take you right to the correct item. If you add them to your cart I get a tiny commission that helps me afford to keep practicing recipes (Recipe experimenting can costing me a fortune!…but I love helping!).

I also have GREAT HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS on the list!

You can get my full shipping list HERE.Happy Shopping and THANK YOU for all your support!!!

Turn the heat to low and smash up the garlic in the butter. Stir in the cream cheese, broth, and Parmesan. Use an immersion blender to puree until smooth. Simmer on low while you make the chicken parmesan. Place one chicken breast into a large ziplock. Use a mallet or rolling pin to pound out the chicken breast to 1/2 inch thickness. Repeat with remaining chicken.Crack the eggs into a shallow baking dish. Place the pork panko (or powdered Parmesan or PSMF Flour) in another shallow baking dish.Dredge chicken in the eggs and let any excess drip off, then dip both sides of the chicken in the pork panko and use your hands to coat the chicken well.Heat a large non-stick scan pan to medium high heat. Add the tallow, lard or duck fat to the pan. Once hot, add the chicken breasts (you will have to work in batches depending on how large your skillet is). Cook for 3 minutes, flip and cook another 3 minutes. Place a slice of mozzarella onto each chicken breast and place the skillet into a broiler oven for a minute or until the cheese is melted and the chicken breast reads 165 degrees F in the thickest part of the breast.ASSEMBLYTo assemble the Carnivore Chicken Parmesan, place 1/2 cup protein sparing noodles if using onto a plate. Doesn’t she look AMAZING????

“I have been overweight since second grade. In fifth and sixth grade my parents took me once a week to a children’s weight loss clinic, where group weigh-ins and talk therapy were the order of the day. I was an active kid, I was on the swim team and I showed horses, it wasn’t a lack of exercise. By the time I graduated high school I was wearing a size 22/24. When I graduated from college in 1991, I was a size 28.I was put on blood pressure medication when I was 30 and put on antidepressants a year later. Around 35 I was diagnosed with Hashimotos. In the Fall of 2016, my doctor talked to me about Metformin. He gave me a prescription that I did not fill until February of 2017. When I saw him in June of 2017, he told me that we needed to talk about insulin, I was 420 pounds.I came across Maria Emmerich and in 6 months, my doctor took me off metformin, and the antidepressants. At only 9 months, I lost 100 pounds, and my doctor cried. In 2 years, I have lost 206 pounds and am 20 pounds from my goal. I am OFF blood pressure medicines and now the only thing I am still taking is for the Hashimotos, and I am working to get off of that now thanks to Maria.I actually bought a size 12 dress the other day, because it fit! I have not worn a size 14/16 since 6th grade! Maria has helped me greatly while I have been on this journey, I live in Wisconsin and have been lucky enough to have met her in person now 6 times. Every time I see her it amazes me that she remembers me, her warmth and joy inspire me to continue on with my journey. My only regret is that I did not find this way of eating sooner. Thank you Maria, from the bottom of my heart, Meredith”

Keto Retreat to THAILAND

Keto Retreat to THAILAND

Many of you know I LOVE to travel and I love to help people get healthy! This is why I married the 2 to create keto retreats around the World!

My next keto retreat is to Thailand in March 2024!

MAN! I LOVE making new friends on my retreats! It is like summer camp but more special!

Thailand has always been on my bucket list and how could it not be?

Some of our adventures will include, relaxing morning on the beach, join a local Guide for the Phuket secret viewpoints tour. Meander through the jungle to Pa Han Dim Cliff for spectacular views, then enjoy a coastal walk to Nai Harn Beach. We will go to secluded beaches where there are majestic rock formations. Set in a small bay and flanked on both sides by jungle and palm-covered mountains, Nai Harn is one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket.

At my keto retreat, we will also visit Phuket’s first ethical elephant sanctuary, endorsed by National Geographic and World Animal Protection. Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is a final home where rehabilitated elephants have the freedom to roam, bathe, forage, and socialize freely.

We will have a private sailboat to explore beaches, we will have a longtail boat ride for island hoping, snorkeling and so much more!

Click HERE to learn more! I hope you can come!

Grilled Grapefruit Chicken

Grilled Grapefruit Chicken

I love grilling in the summer! If you love grilling too, you will LOVE my recipe for Grilled Grapefruit Chicken!

My recipe testers loved this recipe so much that it is in their weekly meal planner!

Grapefruit LMNT now a Permanent Flavor!

Do you love Grapefruit LMNT? We sure do in our house! It is Kai’s favorite flavor. Now you can get it anytime as LMNT has now made it a permanent flavor! To celebrate I made this recipe for Grapefruit chicken and it tastes amazing!!

HOW TO MAKE GRILLED GRAPEFRUIT CHICKEN

There’s not actually any grapefruit in my recipe for Grilled Grapefruit Chicken. Instead, I used LMNT Grapefruit Salt to marinade the chicken!

Why do you need more electrolytes on a ketogenic diet?

When you adopt a lower-carb way of eating, insulin levels in the body drop. This signals the kidneys to excrete electrolytes at a higher rate (particularly sodium).

If these electrolytes are left unreplaced, you can very quickly become electrolyte deficient and experience unpleasant symptoms like muscle cramps, headaches, brain fog, dizziness, and fatigue. These symptoms will persist until you adequately replace electrolytes. This is sometimes called the keto flu.

The good news? Symptoms begin to reside within just 15-30 minutes of properly replacing sodium, magnesium, and potassium.

How to replace electrolytes and maintain ketosis.

Most electrolyte products on the market today are either loaded in sugar or woefully lacking in electrolytes. So for years, I recommended that folks simply add more salt to their food and be conscious that they are eating foods rich in magnesium and potassium.

However, I found that many folks still needed to supplement electrolytes because they are physically active, live in hot climates, intermittent fasting, or struggled to get adequate servings of electrolytes with their meals.

That’s why I’m thrilled by good friend Robb Wolf created LMNT Recharge, a tasty electrolyte drink mix with a meaningful dose of electrolytes, which he developed with low-carb and keto communities in mind. LMNT includes:

An optimal ratio of electrolytesAll natural ingredientsNo sugarNo fillersNo gluten

The ingredients speak for themselves. Compare LMNT to other electrolyte products on the market today:

Other electrolytes just aren’t setup in the right ratios for a ketogenic or carnivore lifestyle. You need more salt, no sugar and the right forms of magnesium (most use oxide where LMNT uses malate which is great!).

They also come in three great flavors, two sweetened with stevia! Perfect for making my Grilled Grapefruit Chicken!

“I found Maria many years ago when I completed The 30 Day Ketogenic Cleanse. Little did I know I was preparing for my daughter. Back in August she started to complain about stomach pains, which I blamed on being nervous of the new school year. Fast forward to the end of September and it was blatantly obvious there was something wrong.

As a former failure to thrive infant, I was grateful she was growing, even though I knew she was overweight. After several rounds of blood work, ultra sounds, x-rays and specialists (which we are still seeing to make sure she doesn’t have anything autoimmune), she was diagnosed with a severely inflamed liver and fatty liver. After reading on the disease, I realized that going dairy free, and “clean” keto/low carb, would be her best bet.

So, we’ve been making Maria’s recipes from her Sugar-free cookbook and she’s down almost 20lbs and feeling a 10000000% better (the before photo was taken 3 months ago). She was almost into a girls 14/16, but is now a size 8/10.  Our new way of eating has made her feel so much better than she now packs her lunch for school and helps me plan our meals for the week.

I’m so thankful to have found Maria many years ago! She will quickly tell you we aren’t on a diet, we just have a new way of eating so our bellies don’t hurt anymore.

Thank you so much.

Have a blessed day!” Stacey

Protein Sparing Cocoa Puffs

Protein Sparing Cocoa Puffs

I grew up on cereal for breakfast. Well, actually I loved cereal so much as a teenager, I would have cereal for dinner if I could!

Cocoa Puffs was one of my favorites! So when I told my husband I wanted to create a protein sparing cereal, he yelled out “COCOA PUFFS!” I yelled, “BRILLIANT” and I jumped into the kitchen to start experimenting. This really did happen!

Most of you know we homeschool the boys and what is funny is some of the homeschool pages discuss food and health. We laugh when the books try to tell us that whole-grain cereal is a healthier breakfast that sausages. However, Kai always wanted to try cereal to see what all the hype is about. He tried my Cocoa Puffs and he LOVES this protein packed healthy cereal!

HOW TO MAKE PROTEIN SPARING COCOA PUFFS CEREAL

To make my recipe for protein sparing Cocoa Puffs cereal, I used Further Food gelatin!

Further Food gelatin is sourced from the highest quality, grass-fed, pasture-raised, hormone-free, and antibiotic free bovine.

Adding Further Food Gelatin works perfectly for making my protein sparing Cocoa Puffs Cereal extra delicious and chewy! Do not skip adding the gelatin! It adds a perfect texture just like real cereal!

Why I LOVE my Red Light Face Mask

Why I LOVE my Red Light Face Mask

Red light therapy has been shown to benefit health and even have some anti-aging properties. Let’s dive into the science on red light therapy for anti-aging.

The Science

The Science Behind Red Light Therapy: Red light therapy, also known as low-level light therapy or photobiomodulation, involves exposing the skin to specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light. These wavelengths penetrate deep into the skin and interact with cells, triggering various cellular mechanisms that promote rejuvenation and vitality. The photons absorbed by the cells stimulate mitochondrial function, increase ATP production (the cell’s energy currency), and promote cellular repair and regeneration.

The anti-aging benefits of red light therapy are grounded in scientific research. For instance, a study published in the “Journal of Investigative Dermatology” demonstrated that red light therapy improves skin complexion, reduces wrinkles, and increases collagen production[^1]. Another study published in the “Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy” revealed that red light therapy enhances skin elasticity and improves the appearance of age-related skin issues[^2]. These studies highlight the remarkable effects of red light therapy on skin health and aging.

Anti-Aging Benefits of Red Light Therapy:

Reduction of Wrinkles and Fine Lines: Red light therapy has shown promising results in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. By stimulating collagen synthesis and elastin production, red light therapy improves skin elasticity and firmness, smoothing out the signs of aging. A study published in the “Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology” found that red light therapy significantly reduces wrinkle severity and improves overall skin texture[^3]. Embrace the radiance of red light to unveil a more youthful complexion!

Enhanced Skin Tone and Texture: Uneven skin tone and texture are common concerns as we age. Red light therapy can help address these issues by promoting a more even complexion and refining skin texture. The wavelengths of red light stimulate blood circulation, delivering vital nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells. This increased circulation enhances the skin’s natural radiance and promotes a smoother, more refined texture.

Accelerated Wound Healing and Tissue Repair: Red light therapy’s rejuvenating effects extend beyond cosmetic benefits. It also aids in wound healing and tissue repair, supporting the body’s natural regenerative processes. Research published in the “International Journal of Molecular Sciences” highlights the ability of red light therapy to enhance cell migration, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis, all crucial factors for wound healing[^4]. By accelerating tissue repair, red light therapy contributes to a more youthful and vibrant appearance.

Incorporating Red Light Therapy into Your Anti-Aging Regimen: Integrating red light therapy into your skincare routine is both simple and effective. Red light therapy devices, such as LED panels or handheld devices, are readily available for home use. It is important to choose a high-quality device that emits the appropriate wavelengths and follow the recommended treatment protocols. Consistency is key, so establish a regular schedule and allow the rejuvenating power of red light to work its magic.

Conclusion: Red light therapy could aid in giving you a youthful look. Its scientifically-backed benefits, including wrinkle reduction, improved skin tone and texture, and accelerated wound healing, make it a valuable addition to any anti-aging regimen. Embrace the rejuvenating power of red light therapy and let your inner glow illuminate the world.

Easy PSMF Carnivore Bagels

Easy PSMF Carnivore Bagels

This recipe for easy PSMF Carnivore Bagels came from my new and special friend Aubrey who came on my keto retreat to Greece and my keto retreat in Bali. Aubrey is a magician in the kitchen and she taught me how to make the protein sparing crepes in a blender. These carnivore bagels are basically the crepes made into bagels!

At first I thought they were too dense but when I had others try them, they said, “They are dense just like a real bagel!” How perfect!

HOW TO MAKE EASY PSMF CARNIVORE BAGELS

To make my easy protein carnivore bagels, I used Further Food Gelatin!

Further Food gelatin and collagen peptides are both excellent sources of collagen. Both their Collagen & Gelatin are sourced from the highest quality, grass-fed, pasture-raised, hormone-free, and antibiotic free bovine collagen.

“Emmerich Keto has changed my life forever. The list of my previous medical concerns ranged from cancer to gall bladder, to celiac, osteopenia, GERD, and on and on and on.  I came across Maria Wojcik Emmerich (or my pixie 🧚‍♀ angel as I refer to her), three years ago this month. With her books, website blog and personal health assessment, I was able to lose 86 pounds (and counting) and heal all of my ailments.  My energy has skyrocketed, I learned how to cook as well as eat, and my health is better now at 53 than it was 20 years ago!!!!  There are lots of ‘keto’ groups out there, but the truly magical one, is the one hosted by Maria and Craig.” Leisa
