Daily Sketch: B.A.T.

This was another Joe sketch on a blank comic cover, I realized the only time I've drawn a Battle Android Trooper was in my Sgt. Slaughter sketch. (p.s. they didn't fair so well against that guy) They look a little more intimidating here. If I had more time I might've put a few more rows of BATs in just gray marker behind, to suggest a full battalion of these guys. I think that's were they are intimidating is the sheer volume of them. But they seemed like a push over too much in the cartoon, I like to think a B.A.T. would give any Joe a hard time when 1 on 1 to make them a more serious threat. When you treat them like fodder, it takes away the drama when they show up.

Anyway, super cool design on these guys, I've always loved their mix of Viper design and the cool robot stuff on the front of their chests.

Daily Sketch: Snake Eyes and Duke...

This was a quick sketch for someone at the Edmonton con this last Sept. That show was a lot of fun and a pleasant surprise. I wish I would've thought to adjust my prices though to account for the Canadian/US dollar exchange. Turns out I was giving about a 30% discount on everything that weekend. Live and learn.

But that aside, and more importantly, I had a great time meeting with fans and con goers that stopped by to say hi and pick up some work. This commission was a guy that was a huge fan of SE and Duke from the cartoon especially. He liked that there was always a bit of tension, so he wanted a "VS" like pose, but not a full on fist fight.  I like to put a little more story or context into my sketches, and this is screaming for a background to me. The storyteller in me has so many unanswered questions with this sketch.

Team Up that needs to happen...Deadpool - SnakeEyes...

One of my larger commissions that got wrapped up recently. This was a lot of fun to work on! This commission was a gift for this great young woman that I met at NYCC and got a chance to chat with. She was awesome to talk with, and was so nice. Meeting people like this are the best parts of going to conventions!

I've been meaning to something like this for years. I do like the Deadpool character quite a bit, but only in some iterations. I think he can be done a little too over the top, and I prefer a more pg-13 version than the video game and upcoming rated "R" version that will be in the movie. Still, I do really like the runs of comics and Joe Kelly and Ed McGuininess' break out run that defined this version of the character. I think Reilly Brown and Paco Medina are my favorite Deadpool artists that have had substantial runs on the character.

As far as the team up goes,  I enjoy that they'd have similar weapons of fighting. However, I don't know that you could get two more different kinds of characters with this kind of fighting style. I'm looking for the "perfect" caption to put above Deadpool's head there in the upper right for a colored print. Any suggestions are welcome!

I will be doing a limited run of this as a color print, signed and numbered. Anyone that gives me a suggestion that I use for the caption on the limited run prints will get a free print shipped directly to you!

Snake Eyes/ Deadpool Team Up - 803

Here is the layout and a few progress shots as I went along. [image error][image error][image error][image error][image error]
The background was a bit of an afterthought. In my layout, I knew I wanted something, but figured I wouldn't have much room. For any aspiring artists out there, this should prove there's always more room for backgrounds and depth. Also, look how much more story this added to the piece. We see the antagonists this way and it increases the level of threat. In my mind, Snake Eyes was investigating the Red Ninjas of the Arashikage clan and followed them to this warehouse. Deadpool was given a marker to follow "the HAND" (red ninjas from the Marvel Universe), and saw these ninjas gathering at this warehouse. When confronted, it would make sense that Deadpool and Snake Eyes would have to team-up and Snake Eyes would get an ear full the entire time.
I would buy that comic :)

Daily Sketch: GI Joe - Dialtone....

More GI Joe sketches, I'll have quite a few GI Joe related sketches to show. It's not exactly a Joe-A-Day event like I've done in the past, but A LOT of the recent sketches I've been finishing up are GI Joe related.

I love getting a chance to do characters that aren't requested as often. Don't get me wrong, I could seriously draw Snake Eyes all day long and never get tired of it. In fact when I was on that comic that's basically what I was doing. That said, I'm glad when I can do an illustration to focus on characters that are great GI Joe characters, but don't often get the spotlight.

This Dialtone is actual going to be finished as the Tiger Force version that was created for this last Joe Con, but I scanned it before putting those last details in so I had a basic version of the character. I really like that I'm building a library of Joe illustrations of characters like Airtight, Outback, Wetsuit and Lowlight along with my "main cast" of characters.

Back with New Updates!!!

Hey everyone! We'll get this blog rolling again with regular posts. I had to take a hiatus for various reasons, mostly due to deadline work.

Just a few announcements, this Wednesday Jan 6th, an issue of Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen from Dark Horse Comics will be available to purchase at your local comic shops and online. I was just a fill in artist on this issue as that's all I could fit into my schedule, and they happened to need someone right as I became available. So it all worked out, but kept me busy throughout Oct. and early Nov.

It was an awesome character to work on, and a book I thought that suited what I like to draw. Also the Joe Con comic from last spring was solicited and is available to purchase. When Joe Con rolled around, we only had half the issue done. If you can find a copy now at your local shop or order online, then you'll get the full Tiger Force story. That issue was a lot of fun to draw, getting back to GI Joe and drawing those characters and that type of action. There were all kinds of hurdles getting the issue done, but I'm glad we were able to wrap it up and how it turned out. Pete Sinclair was a lot of fun to work with from Fun Pub and the Joe Con group.

I've also been working on a series of TMNT variant covers for IDW and Blindbox. Blind box is a company that does subscription based variant covers, but you can also purchase the covers separately after the issue's release. They are more action figure variants, like the GI JOE versions that I did earlier in the year. We'll be working through the whole main cast of heroes and villains of the TMNT universe. I believe totaling 13-15 covers. Plus they are doing a vintage variant where each of the turtles will have red bandanas like in the classic comics.

For my sketch today, I'm working through my commission lists of past shows, and my "at home" commission list of larger commissions. The larger commissions take longer in general and are harder to fit into my schedule unless I have a week off in between projects. Then I can get one or two in. The next couple days I'll post the smaller commissions I've done. I have a few larger illustrations completed, and then some other art that I've been meaning to post but just haven't had time since the summer.

Daily Sketch - Snake Eyes vs Wolverine!....Post #800

For my 800th post, I wanted to make sure this one was a big enough piece. This commission was a LONG time coming. I still have a few of these I really need to get done. This was a blast to work on, it was X-Men and GI Joe that got me into comics years ago, and are still two of my favorite properties. So this commission was a fantastic fan moment for me.

If this is a "who would win" conversation...I think it's inevitable that Wolverine does. Snake Eyes is easily the better fighter, but with Wolverine's healing factor, SE just can't hurt him as fast as Wolverine can heal. Still it would be a fight for the ages.

Daily Sketch: Storm Shadow...

Here's a long overdue sketch for Tim Layne.  He purchased my sketchbooks from a long while back and I needed to do some sketches on the inside for him. Trying my best to work through my lists of commissions to do, inevitably I'll get to them all. Maybe here's a bit of proof that no one is forgotten and that they will ALL get done.

Plus, you can't beat getting to draw Storm Shadow! Any kind of marker sketches never look as good when you scan them in. Mostly because when you clean up the drawing you have to fiddle with the contrast to make the blacks darker and the white areas whiter. So generally you break up the "smooth-ness" of the marker rendering by doing this also. Needless to say, the actual original sketch is of a smoother/better quality than this quick scan and clean up job.

Daily Sketch: Nightwing and Robin - Atkins Family Team up

This was a fun commission. A friend in Chicago commissioned my brother Brian and I to do this cover. He wanted a Nightwing and a Robin, and didn't really mind what version. Brian and I are both huge fans of the Young Justice show and the character designer who worked on it. So since we had our choice, we went with that design.

I've only had a few chances to work with my brother on a commission or professionally, but it's always so awesome. You can see Brian's work here on his Deviant Art gallery.

He's been busy with commissions and he's drawing a book for Comics Experience that'll be published by IDW soon!
