Daily Sketch: Sgt. Slaughter...

This was another commission from a while back and I thought I had posted the colors for this, but as it turns out I hadn't. So here you go, in all his Slaughter Glory! Colors by Simon Gough, pencils and inks by me.
I think this was also the first time I had drawn B.A.T.S....well, what used to be BATS.

Daily Sketch: Flint Colors...

Here's one of my favorite Joes. He was one of the early figures I had as a kid, and I was a big fan of the cartoon growing up. I knew Duke seemed to be in charge in the cartoon, but I just remembered liking lady Jaye and Flint more. Now that I go back and watch the show, it's more obvious, the two characters just have WAY more screen time. For whatever reason, the attitude, the voice, the leadership, or just more screen time, I really dug this character.

I did the line art for this commission a while back, but as always Simon Gough has done a great job bringing it to life with the colors! Well done Si!

Also as an announcement I'll be making it back to Roll Out Roll Call, the GI JOE/Transformers convention this year in London, England! The show takes place over my birthday weekend in July. I'm already getting excited about it. I'll keep everyone posted on my convention schedule and what other shows I'll be doing this year soon.

Flint - 814

Daily Sketch: Punisher...

This was another blank cover commission that needed done and I was able to wrap up recently. Moving through these steadily. I've not drawn the Punisher much, just as a guest character in the few issues of Heroes for Hire that I worked on. I loved the older Punisher books from the late 80's and early 90's. It's been hard for me to get back into the character lately and could use some suggestions for some good runs on the book that people have enjoyed.

Daily Sketch: Ultimate Dormammu...

Dormammu....who?  Yeah, he's been a long time villain in the Marvel Universe. However, since he hasn't appeared in any of the movies and maybe only a chance episode of a marvel cartoon, I'm sure many people don't know this flaming pumpkin headed guy. I got this request mostly because I worked on an issue of Ultimate Fantastic Four for Marvel a few years ago, and Dormammu was the villain of a demon dimension breaking through to the Marvel plane of existence. I actually really liked drawing this character, because he was so different and distinct looking. I think he's classically been a Dr. Strange and Fantastic Four villain in the past, so who knows, he might show up in the upcoming Dr. Strange movie! We'll see.

As for the sketch, a pretty quick sketch of just the head and torso, but still lots of fun to sketch out.

Ult. Dormammu - 810

Daily Sketch: Nightwing...

Back to some Superheroes for a bit. I do love drawing GI JOE, but getting to do some superheroes is a nice change of pace from time to time. Speaking of "time", how about this groovy costume of Nightwing from his 70's/80's Titans years. Nothing says confidence like a huge open necked golden collar. One of my favorite characters, thought I starting reading Nightwing in the Chuck Dixon era, post collar days.
Disco Nightwing - 809

Daily Sketch - Snake Eyes....

This was a cool chance to do a follow up companion piece. I had initially worked on a Storm Shadow bust sketch at a con for this guy. He wanted an inked piece with a subtle red accent.  I saw him again and he had a great idea to do a Snake Eyes companion piece with the red accent again, and display them together. So here is the Snake Eyes, and the Storm Shadow. Drawn probably about a year apart, and I didn't have the first sketch with me to exactly match it up. I think it still works though.

Snake Eyes - 808

I think I need to start whatever arm workout these guys are on, yeesh.

Daily Sketch: Serpentor...

The GI JOE continues. I've got just a few more Joe sketches done and ready to post, then we'll shift over to the Superhero characters I've done lately for a bit. I know all the Joe fans here would like this to go on all year, but it turns out, I DO actually get requests beside GI JOE every once in a while.

So I'll post this one and one more Joe related sketch, and then I've got 4-5 superheroes to post up. After that though, I still have a backlog of GI Joe commissions to get to, and we'll probably jump right back in to "Joe-A-Day" until those are all completed!

Here's a Serpentor leading the troops for today's cover sketch. I have another Serpentor to do, but that's more of the late 90's Devil's Due design. Which I also liked, and it's quite a bit different, so I don't mind doing them so close together. I also wanted to mention that this request was specifically supposed to be similar to the 300 movie poster with King Leonidas and the Spartans behind him. So if the composition looks vaguely familiar, I wasn't just hoping to pass this off. It was specifically requested. I like the idea, and I think it's appropriate. In general, I have a harder time getting the same kind of intensity or energy in a commission when the composition is dictated to me. At the same time a customer has every right to get the drawing they want, and some have a very specific thing in mind. I don't mind working on commissions where the composition is directed, but it can be confining at times.

Serpentor - 807

Daily Sketch: Mo' Snake Eyes...

Another blank cover, Snake Eyes in action. I've said it many times, I never get tired of this character. Though his uniform is probably one of the more time consuming/detailed of the characters I usually draw, I still get excited to draw him every time. When someone asks me to draw Snake Eyes, they usually start with "Man, I know you must get tired of drawing him, but could you do a Snake Eyes sketch for me?" Almost without fail that's how the conversation starts. Luckily, I'm always happy to do it and I try my best to come up with a new pose or way to draw him. That's keeps it exciting, and luckily he's an agile character so I can vary the poses drastically from sketch to sketch.

This one also sporting the Cuma Tak Ri knife that was designed by Waysun Jonny Tsai! A good friend I met years ago at a Chicago comic con. These knives are available to buy, they're crazy versatile, and pretty intimidating. You can check out his Facebook site here:
