Daily Sketch - GI JOE's Dusty....

This was another quicker head sketch like the last Cobra Viper. Again, starting with the sharpie contour line, or outline around the sketch immediately let me not go into crazy detail on the line work. This is still more than a "quick sketch", but for me it's definitely looser than I had been previously doing. So it went quicker for me.

I have a lot of GI JOE related sketches coming. Most of the convention requests I've had and older commission list work is often Joe related, which I love to do! Not only that, but I had a few older Joe Con sketches that still needed completed, and I'm working on those at the moment as well! Excited to get all these done as Im sure all those that have waited are excited to get them!

Cobra Viper...

This was a recent head sketch I did at Salt Lake Comic Con. In my years of going to conventions, I was never very good at quick sketches. Being able to "let go" and not refine every line I put down into a drawing. I justified the obsessive behavior by saying that I didn't want art of an inferior quality represent my work or my business and continued to raise my prices to satisfy the demands of the market and my increased time for all the detail.

Because I literally only had a few minutes to do this Cobra Viper head sketch, it forced me to speed up the process and use a brush pen to throw in the shadow and detail. I'm not doing anything even remotely groundbreaking here, in fact I'm woefully behind the times when it comes to applying this technique to convention sketches to speed up the process. But finally the light bulb went off and I realized a process to help my brain switch off in the need for so much linear precision. I sketched in the head in pencil as I normally would and then immediately put in the contour line with a big fat sharpie!

For whatever reason, that alone let me let go. It was immediately imprecise and inaccurate if you were going to traditionally ink a page, a panel, a cover etc. This was something else. Is it worse than my other hyper detailed drawings....no. I think I found a happy medium  here finally that would allow me to do affordable convention sketches for people that just want a quick, affordable sample of my art. I will still do the over sized hyper detail commission for anyone that wants that and collects that kind of art, but it's refreshing to know I can offer something to another portion of fans.

Fun experiment.

Snake Eyes....

Just when you think I've drawn Snake Eyes enough, I get to draw this guy again!!! I've said it before, but I'll never get tired of drawing this guy. One of the things I like about him so much is the ability to draw him from so many directions, or poses or actions and it still be in character. It's not as easy with Cobra Commander, or even Duke for example. The versatility of his abilities allows for a nice variety  of sketch opportunities.

Kickstarter Rewards - Captain Hammer...

We're moving along on RuneStone again getting kickstarter rewards done and shipped out. We should've had this done a LONG time ago, but due to my schedule and the hiatus we took on RuneStone we are just now taking care of them. We've heard most backers were surprised to get their sketch, or see that we're following through on the project. I know there's a variety of kickstarter projects, that do get funded, but for one reason or another never come to fruition. We wanted to make sure we didn't fall into that category, so even though production is happening well after the initial campaign work is definitely getting done!

This was one of the Kickstarter rewards, I'll have many more to post in the next few weeks!

Captain Hammer from the Dr. Horrible Sing Along web series from Joss Whedon was a lot of fun to draw. I've never been much of a portrait artist. I just never studied or took the time to hone the craft of capturing a likeness and I have no intention to. It just doesn't interest me. With a character like this though, you can draw an approximation and as long as you get the character across I think it still works.

Commission Spree....Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow

I've got a rare break in my schedule and I'll be taking care of as many commissions as I can possibly fit in. I've still got a few old commissions that need wrapped up, and I've had some very patient customers the have supported my work. I'll be doing all I can to make it worth their wait!

I've got no more conventions until next spring, so I'll be finishing ALL the commissions and Kickstarter rewards as soon as possible. When those are completed, I'll be opening up my new commission order format as soon as my previous list is cleared.

This one's for Dave O'Hare! Looking forward to seeing him again at Garden State Comic Con in New Jersey next July!

Batman - Daily Sketch...

Here's a convention sketch from awhile back. I've got quite a few scans I need to upload and get posted. Fun to draw this character, I always enjoy the more grounded martial arts characters in comics. Batman's definitely fits that bill!
