Daily Sketch: The Thing...
I'd gotten out of the habit of posting regularly. Well, at least posting on my blog regularly. I feel like my blog is a bit out-dated with all the other social media options out there to see my work. However, it does help to have a solid home base for my work that's established and has been around for awhile. Also, not everyone has Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, where I've been posting more frequently.
I'll have to look at my schedule and balance the time it takes to post on all these platforms. I've mostly moved over to Instagram because I can post from my phone, and it automatically posts on the other social media sites for me. When I was posting on the blog every day, I had to really set aside time each day to devote to these posts. I miss having something to promote each day though.
I've got a number of projects and commissions that I want to showcase. I want to be transparent with the commissions that are in progress and what commission is lined up. I think I'll convert this blog to my commission base, where people can come here to check in on how their piece is coming along. I still have quite a few to wrap up, and there is progress being made. As always, commissions have to take a back seat to my regular deadline work. I've been very upfront with everyone, that if you paid for commission work in advance, that I am more than happy to refund anyone that feels they've waited to long. I appreciate everyone's patience. I've also said, and sincerely follow through on, is that I can't guarantee when you'll get your commission, but I can guarantee that it will get done.
The only real bonus when you have to wait, is that I'd say I'm a better artist than I was 6 months ago, I'm a much better artist than I was, 1-3 years ago. So anyone that's waited, you'll definitely be getting your money's worth if you paid my rates from a couple years ago, but get what I'm producing now for twice as much.
I'll post sketches as often as I can, most will be from previous conventions that I've scanned or completed commissions. I'll post in the title, "Commission Update" whenever I have a progress shot of whatever commission I'm working on at the moment. That will let you know when your commission is started, and completed.
Thanks again to everyone that is following my blog! Crazy to think it's been going for 5 and a half years...you know...with a break every once in a while.

I'm still very proud to represent my Blog and Social Media Sponsor

Daily Sketch: Colossus...
Another commission from a convention. I always dig drawing X-Men, and this character especially is fun and challenging to draw with all the texture details.

Daily Sketch: Scarlett...
This was another quick 9x12 sketch I did recently. Really cutting into my overdue commissions lately. Trying to juggle that with a few covers and side projects I'm doing. Not on a regular book at the moment, but it's a nice break in that I am finally catching up on some of these overdue projects and personal commissions. I appreciate everyone's patience!

Daily Sketch: Cyclops...
Another quicker sketch, these are 9x12 and what I do at conventions that are "Head and Torso" sketches. I absolutely love doing sketches of the 90's versions of the X-Men. It's totally the era that I was getting into comics and finally old enough to buy comics on my own. I remember picking up X-Men books on the shelves at the gas station and somehow I know about the X-Men, but not much about the characters. This was before the cartoon and when the X-men were thought dead and headquartered in Australia. So late 80's storylines.
Man, but when the cartoon came on in '92, that was it, I was buying comics regularly then and watching those characters every Sat morning. It was the best! I've always been a fan of the leaders in various cartoons and comics. Optimus Prime, LionO, He-Man and of course Cyclops here.
So X-Men was a big part of what got me into comics. A few years ago I got to work on a fill in issue of X-Men Forever with Chris Claremont and Marc Sumerak. It was a story that filled in gaps of the 90's story arc X-Tinction Agenda and I got to draw my favorite characters in some of their 90's get up professionally for Marvel. Definitely a lot of fun!

Daily Sketch: Serpentor...
This was a fun commission. Someone asked for a Serpentor, which I've only drawn a few times before, in a similar throne scenario as this other Cobra Commander I did. I obviously didn't want to totally recreate it, but it's fun to see them side by side.

Daily Sketch: Black Panther...
This was another blank comic cover sketch that I finished up this last summer. Some of these sketches I've had done for awhile, but it's taken me some time to have a break in my schedule and post on my blog again. I think Black Panther would be a very fun character to draw. Some characters have a limited number of poses or ways that they move. Cyclops from the X-Men for example has his eye blast, and thats going to dictate how he fights or even stands. Black Panther is so agile and acrobatic, along with having multiple fighting styles can be drawn so many ways. There are a few characters with this versatility, but then he's got this slick costume on top of it all. I've only had the chance to draw him a few times, but I really enjoy it each time I get to.
The black tuxedo cat in the background was a cat that belonged to the guy who commissioned this piece.

Daily Sketch: Custom Joe...
I met a great guy at the UK Roll Out Roll Call convention in London this last summer. He had me draw a commission of his custom GI JOE figure. He's not a preexisting character, he had a figure made and now artwork all associated with his custom character. Very cool idea and I really enjoyed the design. Very much a Jungle/Survivalist kind of Joe along the lines of Outback or Recondo I'd imagine. If he sees this post, maybe I'll get his name and BIO then I can post that up as well.
Fun to do, and glad to meet so many great GI JOE fans in the UK!

Daily Sketch - RuneStone Gar....
Elders of the RuneStone...What is that you might ask? Well it's a co-created comic property that my friend Quinn Johnson and I have been working on for a few years. I've made previous posts about it, and we had a successful Kickstarter campaign for it a few years ago. However after making some great initial progress it seemed to disappear! What happened? Well a combination of things haunted production. My work schedule changed and I was doing less comic work and more toy production and package art, as well as some video game art. That change in schedule was very unexpected and wasn't going to allow full production on a side project like RuneStone. Also Quinn, the writer and creator, got a job working full time on the video game Disney Infinity!
Once again schedules have changed and allowed production to resume. Part of that production has been new layouts, new pages and continued work on the actual book. However, it also includes fulfilling all the Kickstarter Rewards from the campaign a few years ago! So I've been hard at work getting sketches and commissions done to fulfill those rewards and I'll post a few of them up here.
This is a sketch of Scott, one of the main kids in the book that is imbued with power. He's able to transform into a GARgantuan character. It's always a fun book to get back to whenever I've had a break in my schedule, and this time we're really making some great progress. Keep on the look out on my blog and facebook for more announcements soon!
