No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks – Part Two

how to sew 1/4-square triangles by Nancy Zieman

Triangular shapes can be sticklers to piece! Quilt patterns with 1/2-square and 1/4-square triangles are found in many traditional quilt pattern designs. Here’s how to take the hassle out of creating triangles, in particular 1/4-square triangles. For more details watch the second episode of No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks online.

The Sampler Quilt

This 12-block quilt features both 1/2- and 1/4-square blocks. In a previous blog, Nancy Zieman featured six of the 1/2-square triangle blocks. Now learn how to combine the two block styles to create amazing quilt designs. Note: The instructions to create this quilt are found in No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks book.

1/4-Square Dance

Some quilt block names have a long history; others are simply made up on the fly! We’ll let you decide the authenticity of this block named the 1/4-Square Dance! Regardless of what it’s called, it’s the perfect block to begin our no-hassle quilt block journey.

Boy’s Nonsense (1898)

This quilt block named, Boy’s Nonsense, was officially recorded and appears in print in 1898. The block appears to include rectangular strips. Not so, the design is a combination of 1/2- and 1/4-square triangles plus a plain center square.

Silent Star

It might be difficult to comprehend, but the next block, Silent Star, is almost identical to the last block, Boy’s Nonsense. The main difference in construction is the center block—all the other blocks are the same. This is the case where fabric choices totally change the design!

Ohio Star

Simple in design, yet elegant, the Ohio Star quilt block has been in use since the early 1800s, with a spike in popularity in the 1930s. See how this 9-patch block can be made the no-hassle way in the 21st century.

Star of Hope (1980)

Now for your master’s degree in 1/4-square triangles! The Star of Hope combines a 1/2- and 1/4-square triangle; Nancy called it a modified 1/4-square. Notice the three-color block of aqua, ivory, and teal. Success comes by thinking this through and following the directions!

Card Trick (1979)

The Card Trick Quilt Block, like most magic, seems impossible to reproduce. What appears as sleight of hand, is a very logical block to create once you see the elements. The Card Trick—we know you will not be fooled by the design!

How to Make 1/4-Square Triangles

There are several ways to make triangles; our preference is to use the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge. Reference the left side of the gauge for 1/2-square triangles and the right side for 1/4-square triangles.

Depress and slide the guide to the size triangle you’d like to make. The guide will lock in place.

Nancy Zieman No Hassle Triangles Gauge by Clover IMG_4178

Cut strips the size printed on the gauge. Then cut strips into squares. In this example, cut 6-1/4″ strips, then cut strips into 6-1/4″ squares.

Stack two blocks.
Mark center diagonal line through the die-cut openings on the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge.

Nancy Zieman No Hassle Triangles Gauge by Clover IMG_4164

Stitch a scant 1/4″ from each side of center.

Cut along center; press.

Stack two 1/2-square triangles, meeting opposite colors.

Slide the gauge to the 1/2-square triangle marking on the left side. Double check that the block fits within the gauge perimeters.
Mark center diagonal line through die cut openings.

Cut along center marking; press.

This time, you’ll have two accurate 1/4-square triangles! Using the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge guarantees that the sizes of the 1/2-square and 1/4-square triangles are compatible in a quilt design!

Fashion Sewing: Plain to Fabulous – Part One

Expressing yourself with fabric is one of the hallmarks of sewing. Whether it’s dramatic, casual, modern, or sophisticated, you can easily combine fabrics and techniques that showcase your sense of style. Lorraine Torrence is Nancy Zieman’s guest on Fashion Sewing: Plain to Fabulous Part One. Watch as Lorraine shares her knack for making a statement through sewing.

On Sewing With Nancy, we’ll show how innovative sewing can be, using a basic tunic pattern. To show style changes, Lorraine and Nancy use a classic tunic pattern called the Town & Country. Anytime there is an area like a front panel to fill, use that space to show your style! See how easy it is on part one of this series, Fashion Sewing: Plain to Fabulous.

If you missed the episode, you can always catch up online at NancyZieman.com or watch the Fashion Sewing: Plain to Fabulous DVD from Nancy’s Notions.

Hip to Be Square

Gather small strips of fabric that portray your sense of fashion, stitch into strip sets, and cut into squares. Fill the center panel of this tunic with small quilt squares or blocks that contrast with the basic tunic color. Like the song says, “It’s hip to be square.”

Color Take Away

Turn a plain fabric into something fabulous with a stamp, stencil, or paintbrush. Rather than adding color, learn how to take color away from a natural fabric such as cotton, linen, or silk. Use a de-colorant gel—one of Lorraine’s artsy techniques. This method creates quite a unique garment, as you’ll see on Sewing With Nancy.

Bias Influences

Reflect your sense of style by adding artistic touches of fabric trim. Lorraine’s next tunic features complimentary and contrasting colors of squares and bias strips of fabric randomly stitched to the panel. The result—a fashion technique we call Bias Influences. It’s both a clever and tasteful fashion accent. Personalize your wardrobe with tips from this episode.

The Magic of Texture

What was once ordinary can easily become dimensional! Through the magic of stitching and steaming, this one time perfectly flat layer of silk fabric is now completely textured—a stitching technique that adds character! It’s magical how simple steps can make such a dramatic difference. Watch the transformation on Sewing With Nancy.

No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks – Part One

How to make 1/2-square triangles the easy way by Nancy ZiemanOne of the easiest places to start quilting is with a 1/2-square triangle. Nancy Zieman shows how to create this traditional quilting staple without fussing around with bias-cut edges. Make the block unit easily, “Nancy’s no-hassle way,” with this episode of Sewing With Nancy, which features blocks from Nancy’s book, No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks.

During the first episode on Sewing With Nancy, learn to create six different blocks, all made with 1/2-square triangles. During the second episode—next week’s feature—learn about 1/4-square triangles. Watch this Sewing With Nancy episode!

The Box Quilt (1898)

One of the more streamline quilt blocks to create from 1/2-square triangles is the Box Quilt. First illustrated in print in 1898, it’s created with eight 1/2-square triangle blocks and a square. The design has great movement, reminiscent of a pinwheel.

How to Make 1/2-square triangles by Nancy Zieman

Shadow Play

Instead of making all the 1/2-square triangles from the same fabrics, stitch together three different color combos. This block is called Shadow Play, where the fabric choices create the impact.

How to Make 1/2-square triangles by Nancy Zieman Godey Design

Godey’s Lady’s Book was a monthly magazine published in Philadelphia between 1830 and 1876. Before the Civil War, it was the most widely circulated magazine in the United States. Sarah Josepha Hall was the editor of the magazine from 1837 to 1877; she also wrote Mary Had a Little Lamb. One of the designs featured in the magazine in 1858 was simply called, Godey Design.

Square in a Square

When researching quilt block names, Nancy found literally dozens of quilt blocks named Square in a Square. With seemingly limitless geometric options with squares, no wonder it’s a common name. Regardless, it’s an attractive block all designed with 1/2-square triangles.

How to make 1/2-square triangles by Nancy Zieman

May Basket

May Basket is another frequently used name for a quilt block. This block is also named, Cactus Flower. Your fabric choice will dictate the name. This version combines two sizes of finished triangles: 3-1/2″ and 6-1/2″, giving the block a center focal point.

How to make 1/2-square triangles by Nancy Zieman

Nancy’s Spool

This block may or may not be an original arrangement of 1/2-square triangles. Our guess is that it has been created before, but since Nancy couldn’t find it in print, she named it Nancy’s Spool.

How to make 1/2-square triangles by Nancy Zieman

How to Make 1/2-Square Triangles

During the TV episode, Nancy shared how to easily make the above blocks as well as basic 2-1/2″, 3-1/2″, 4-1/2″, 5-1/2″ and 6-1/2″ half-square triangles. (Learn 1/4-square triangle tips in the next episode!) There’s no hassle and no need to cut a single triangle! The measurements are printed on the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge that Nancy designed for Clover.

Every Last Piece

Every Last Piece by Lynn Harris | Sewing With Nancy | Nancy Zieman | Scrap Quilting

Every Last Piece Scrap Quilts on Sewing With Nancy with host Nancy Zieman and guest Lynn HarrisWhether you have bins of fabric scraps or just a few odds and ends that you can’t part with, Lynn Harris, Nancy Zieman’s guest on this episode of Sewing With Nancy, will share refreshing ways to incorporate scraps in quilt designs. Learn to use fabric pieces of every size, from tiny scraps to larger pieces, during the featured program, Every Last Piece.

Every Last Piece episode is online. Pick up the book and the supplies at Nancy’s Notions, including:

Every Last Piece book/DVD
Template Plastic, two 8–1/2″ x 11″ sheets
Glass Head Pins, 100 count
Klasse Universal Needles, five needles
Klasse Quilting Needles, five needles

Window Garden Quilt

In our featured Sewing With Nancy TV show, Every Last Piece, Lynn shares her “string piecing” methods for creating beautiful scrappy quilts. If your scrap bin is like Lynn’s, it’s overflowing with scraps of all sizes and shapes. The square blocks in Lynn’s Window Garden quilt are made with “strings” of fabric. The secondary pattern is created with the addition of Hourglass blocks. This is a great way to make a bigger quilt from fewer string-pieced blocks.

String Quilting Basics

Lynn will demonstrate the basic techniques of how to create string-based designs on this episode. Start by choosing larger scrap pieces that extend past your desired block size. Vary the angle of the seams for added interest. See how easy it is—on this episode of Sewing With Nancy.

Wind Farm Block

Trim the string blocks to fit Lynn’s Wind Farm Block template included within the book and cut the wedge template shape from coordinating fabrics. The effect is a spinning pinwheel design with a unique scrappy touch. (Focus your eyes on the blue areas and the spinning Wind Farm Wheels pop!)

String Quilting Shapes

Now it’s time to take strip piecing to the next level. Instead of creating square blocks, stitch leftover pieces to a specific shape. Rose Lattice, Lynn’s quilt, creates great visual movement by cutting the blocks on point. It’s a relatively simple way of creating a free-form block that really makes a statement. See the quilt on this episode of Sewing With Nancy.

Paris on a Shoestring Quilt

Large pieces of a Paris map fabric inspired the name of this quilt, Paris on a Shoestring. Lynn played around with string triangles that she made ahead, and then laid out the blocks in a star design. What a great way of combining pieces with yardage!

Solar Flare Quilt

No matter what size or shape, use those treasured scraps to fit any template shape. Solar Flare, Lynn’s next string quilt, combines triangles of scraps and other triangles of solid fabric. A layout suggested by her son, has both drama and style.

Beach Balls Quilt

Lynn’s Beach Balls quilt is an exercise in a controlled use of color. The design features monochromatic string-pieced squares in the background and brightly colored beach balls made of wedges. The best part—the design was totally created from her scrap bin. Watch how Lynn demonstrates working with this traditional Drunkard’s Path design on Sewing With Nancy on Every Last Piece.

Making Stars from Fabric Scraps

When your scrap box is dwindling down, it’s time to make stars! Lynn worked on making stars for several months until she had accumulated several hundred! Yes, several hundred patches. Then, she laid them out into 9-patch units. Work in small batches, and soon, you too will have enough stars to make a small or even a bed-sized quilt named Stardust.

Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares – Part Three

Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares - Part Three

Incorporating specialty fabrics can add functionality when sewing gifts and projects. For example, try clear vinyl. This unique fabric is the star of the Sewing With Nancy program, Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares—the third episode. Watch online.  Here’s a preview of the projects that you’ll see demonstrated during the show.

Jewelry Caddies

Nancy began this episode with a Jewelry Caddy duo, which fits all of the standards set for this show. The caddies use two sizes of fabric rectangles, specialty fabric (clear vinyl with a ribbon accent trim), and all the sewing is done with straight stitches. Best of all, the projects are attractive and very practical!

Portable Ironing Blanket

Use the same dimensions as the jewelry caddies plus Quilted Iron Quick fabric to make a portable mini-ironing blanket. Use it next to your sewing machine for quick presses. Or, create a larger ironing blanket, any size of your choice, with the same transportability. It could easily be used as an ironing board substitute or for travel. Either way, you can custom-make these projects easily with Nancy’s sew simple techniques.

Closet Organizer

How about adding extra storage to your home without assembling knock-down furniture or remodeling a closet? Create portable, compact closet organizers with double-sided quilted fabric, clear vinyl, and ribbon trim. It’s another straight-stitched project that can hang in full sight or hidden behind a closet door.

Magic Inch Quilts – Part Two

Magic Inch Quilts by Kerr and Ringle on Sewing With Nancy - Nancy Zieman - Improv Modern QuiltsJoin Nancy Zieman for part-two of Magic Inch Quilts on Sewing With Nancy with modern quilters and husband/wife team Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr. Often we think about quilting with squares and rectangles of fabric. In these new modern quilting designs, the piecing technique and the color choices are equally as important as Weeks’ and Bill’s improvisational 1-inch strips of color!

Modern Magic Inch Quilts on Sewing With Nancy with Nancy Zieman, Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr

“We enjoy working with color, but also incorporating 1″ pieces into quilt designs. The piecing technique and the color choices are equally important.”

 Whiskers Quilt

Bill shows how this Whiskers quilt features a square block that is updated by adding three Magic Inch strips. Using solids for the blocks and a yarn-dyed stripe for the strips, this quilt can be customized for a baby, a teen, or even a quilt for grandpa. Use a basket weave layout for the blocks to add additional interest and repeat the stripe fabric in the binding.

Pickup Sticks Quilt

Pickup Sticks is the original Magic Inch Quilt that Bill and Weeks designed in 2000. Inspired by the children’s game, these colorful sticks appear to be lying on top of one another as a result of this unique piecing process. For each block you’ll decide how many cuts and where to make them for your one-of-a-kind improvisational masterpiece. Watch online as this quilt is created.

Local Hero Quilt

First-responders are among the local heroes in every town. Weeks and Bill made this quilt for their local firehouse where the firefighters and emergency medical technicians rest when not on call. This improvisational technique creates a patriotic block that can be made by adventurous beginners and veteran quilters alike.

Colorful Bean Bag Toss

One of America’s family’s favorite outdoor games goes by quite a few names; cornhole, tailgate, bean bag toss, doghouse, Baggo, or, just plain bags. What would the game be without festive, colorful bags? Learn how to sew your own cornhole bags (or bean bags) and let the games begin! Find the bean bag sewing tutorial here.

Sew a Casserole Carrier

Stitch this Casserole Carrier project in an evening or two. Then, let your tasteful carrier help you get a handle on things. Cook, place a casserole in the center, wrap and GO! An insulated carrier is perfect for picnics and potluck dinners. The inner insulated pocket lets you store a hot or cold pack to keep the temperature of your dish just right. The carrier folds flat when not in use and can be laundered. See how easy it is to create this carrier, here.

Sew Easy Summer Napkins

These easy to make napkins are ideal for a summer luncheon, picnic, or handmade hostess gift. Stitch a set of four napkins in an hour or less with Nancy’s sew-easy mitered corner technique. Showcase your favorite fabrics by mixing or matching fabric groupings, or make them from one fabric. Find the sewing tutorial for Easy Summer Napkins, here.

Her comment is: I love this block and the fabric is just divine. The instructions look so simple that I really think I could make this quilt in baby size with wonderful baby fabric. Now mind you I have never really made a quilt. I made one quilt top and that was over 20 years ago. I’m still looking for the fabric I bought to put on the back of it. ha ha. I just love all the info I get from Nancy Zieman website and I watched all the time on PBS as she was so informative on how to do things and had wonderful guests. Thank you for this opportunity to win this FAT QUARTER PACK.
