Change Up Patchwork Part Three on The Best of Sewing With Nancy

There’s more to a 9-patch block than meets the eye! Many creative quilt or craft projects start with 9-patch blocks. Nancy shows you how to change-up the strip sizes, fabrics, or block layout to expand your quilting options. Change-Up Patchwork is the name of this Sewing With Nancy three-part TV series. The basic 9-patch quilt block can easily be made with two fabrics and two different fabric stratas—sew strips together, subcut into sections, then sew into a block. Watch Nancy explain the process online at your convenience and find all the instructions in her book, Change-Up Patchwork. After learning the basics, let your creativity flow!

Vintage 9-Patch

The first variation is a vintage-look table quilt. In the 1800s, quilters painstakingly cut small fabric squares from fabric scraps, then hand-pieced 9-patch designs. We’ll show you how to achieve this vintage look with ease, incorporating clever strip cutting techniques.

Create the first strata unit: dark—light—dark fabric strips. Notice that partial lengths of crosswise strips are “kissed” together on each side of the middle strips. That’s the magic! Watch online or read the book to learn the math (for the strip lengths) that allows this process to work.

Stitch a second strata unit: light—dark—light fabric strips. Again, use partial strip lengths.

Subcut the stratas into sections. The specific strip size that we recommend makes for almost no waste of fabric while giving the vintage, scrappy effect.

Stitch the sections together; presto! The finished quilt was created by alternating the 9-patch blocks with cream-colored fabric squares of the same size.

 

Camouflaged 9-Patch

At first glance, you might think this quilt design is a combination of several different blocks designs—perhaps a 4-patch paired with squares and rectangles. As you’ll soon learn, it’s a 9-patch—a camouflaged 9-patch block. The large 12″ finished block sizes are a speedy way to create a baby’s tummy-time quilt.

Nancy shows how to create two strata configurations. The strip sizes are the same in each strata with the fabric colors reversed.

We find it fascinating how two fabrics can be used to create asymmetrical 9-patch blocks.

7-Patch Weave

There aren’t too many hard-fast rules when it comes to patchwork, which is why Nancy chose to break with tradition. Case in point: Must the 9-patch block always have nine pieces? That may seem like a ridiculous question, yet take away part of the block and substitute a strip of fabric—presto a 7-patch block. With a clever layout the blocks intertwine, which gives the illusion of them being woven together. We call it the 7-Patch Weave.

You’ll notice that these blocks have some of the components of a 9-patch. The middle section—a strip of fabric—creates an easy-to-piece block with unique design possibilities.With a layout that alternates blocks and directions of the blocks, a woven design appears. Change Up Patchwork Part Two on Sewing With Nancy

If you sew, chances are that fabric scraps abound in your sewing area. Don’t worry about storing scraps; sew them! Use Nancy’s Change-Up Patchwork techniques to create quilt projects with contemporary designs. Watch the second episode of Change-up Patchwork online to see all the details!

Scrappy Square Quilt

This scrappy square design was made from leftover fabric. Team Nancy auditioned what was stored away. Then, we turned coordinating fabrics into an ideal kids’ quilt. Learn how to stitch the square within a square design, using simple strip piecing techniques. Watch online to see how it’s done!

Assemble square within a square blocks with large centers. Cut 4-1/2″ crosswise strips for the centers and 1-1/2″ crosswise strips for the sides. The blocks are 6-1/2″.

Then, create again as many 6-1/2″ squares with small centers. All strips are cut 2-1/2″ wide for this easy block.

The layout is simple—alternate the blocks!

Scattered Squares

Now it’s time for artistic expression. The Scattered Squares Table Runner features four different block configurations that are mixed and matched to create a conversation piece. Watch online or read in the book how to design your own square within a square block with the use of “old school” graph paper.

Four different scattered-square blocks were used in this table runner:

Square within a square with a large center

Square within a square with a small center

Square within a square with a medium, offset center

Square within a square with a small, offset center

Deciding on the arrangement took the most time!

Flip Flopped Rectangles Quilt

Designing quilt blocks is as much fun as sewing them—Nancy called this design, Flip Flopped Rectangles. Replace a square with a rectangle to create a modern look. The skill set is the same, but the strip sizes have changed.

All the blocks featured in this blog and on the Sewing With Nancy TV episode are strip pieced. Square or rectangular blocks are all pieced using the same techniques. Half the blocks have a vertical contrast …

the other half of the blocks have a horizontal contrast.

To keep with the modern look, we chose not to add a border. The quilt is finished with a traditional binding. Do you like it? Book Features Nine Great Quilts

Change Up Patchwork Part One on Sewing With Nancy

Start with the basics, then make a few simple modifications, to change what was traditional into modern! A 4-patch block—a simple, yet elegant patchwork design—has such potential! Presto, you’re a quilt designer, creating one-of-a-kind designs. Welcome to Sewing With Nancy’s first episode of the three-part series, Change-Up Patchwork.

A 3-color 4-patch serves as the basis for this blog and corresponding TV show.

Can-Do 4-Patch Quilt

Begin your change-up patchwork journey with a traditional 4-patch. Mix up the line-up using three different sizes of 4-patches for 4″, 8″, and 16″ finished quilt blocks. The various sizes of 4-patch blocks are cleverly combined with solid blocks to create a modern small-to-large block theme. It’s a can-do quilt!

Learn how to create rows of 4-patch blocks and squares. The different sizes of the 4-patch blocks nest together!

Lay out the quilt rows and watch the Can-Do 4-Patch Quilt take shape. (We laid out the rows on our studio floor. Can you spot some of our “spike” marks that we use for lighting?)

Spinning 4-Patch

The beauty of this quilt is its simplicity! Tweak the sizes of the 4-patch strips and the patchwork design to give the illusion of movement when four blocks are combined. Use bold, bright batik fabrics or your fabric print/solid combination. Remember, you’re the quilt designer.

The TV show and book detail how to change the sizes of the strips. Featured is a 4-patch design, an uneven 4-patch. The block by itself doesn’t look like much …

but arrange four of the same blocks together—presto, a Spinning 4-Patch!

High-Low 4-Patch
A block that is usually symmetrical takes on a totally different feel when what was balanced becomes uneven. Don’t change the sewing steps, only the strip sizes. Can you see the strata sections? Watch the show online and you’ll get all the details!

It’s an ideal block for a table runner.

 16″ No-Hassle Dinner Napkin Sewing Tutorial

Watch the NEW! Stitch it! Sisters Program 103: No-Hassle Napkins video and see how to make our No-Hassle Napkins – with Nancy Zieman’s Mitered Corner Sewing Tips! Then stitch four 16″ No-Hassle Dinner Napkins following our easy step-by step sewing directions, below.

Cut Four 18″ x 18″ Outer Black Floral Fabric Squares.

Cut Four 16″ x 16″ Inner Red Gingham Fabric Squares.

Press

Remove paper backing, and press under 1/4″ around all four napkin edges.

Using the Seams Right, place a mark 1″ in from corner – along top, and along side. Repeat on all four corners.

Connect 1″ markings with Sewers Fix It Tape.

Fold napkin right sides together, meeting tape edges.

Stitch along outer edge of Sewers Fix It Tape.



Cut away excess seam allowance. Remove Sewers Fix It Tape.





Using Clover’s Point 2 Point Tuner, turn corners right side out.

With Clover’s Hot Hemmer, press over 1/2″ hem around all napkin edges.

Insert inner fabric, wrong sides together, and pin.



Topstitch outer fabric near inner edge.

Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares Part Three on Sewing With Nancy

Incorporating specialty fabrics can add functionality when sewing gifts and projects. For example, try clear vinyl. Jewelry Caddies

Nancy began this episode with a Jewelry Caddy duo, which fits all of the standards set for this show. The caddies use two sizes of fabric rectangles, specialty fabric (clear vinyl with a ribbon accent trim), and all the sewing is done with straight stitches. Best of all, the projects are attractive and very practical!

Portable Ironing Blanket
