Meet the Hosts of Stitch it! Sisters
Deanna Springer stitched her first doll quilt when she was just six years old. Deanna’s love for all things sewing was nurtured by her mom and grandmothers, and later in 4-H. Deanna started working for Nancy Zieman companies in 1989 and is celebrating 30 years with NZ companies. Nancy and Deanna started Nancy Zieman Productions, LLC. (NZP) in 2007. Deanna worked alongside Nancy as marketing coordinator, business manager, co-director of video production, and in product development and project design. Over 12 exciting years, Nancy, Deanna, and the NZP Team launched a new BLOG, social media channels, 40+ sewing and quilting products including tools, patterns and books. Deanna and the Team NZP are proud to carry on Nancy Zieman’s legacy by continuing to share Nancy’s love of sewing through the NZP Blog and social channels, and through the NEW! Stitch it! Dana Casey was inspired to begin sewing at a young age by her family of avid sewists. At age 10, with guidance from her big sister Deanna, she stitched her first small quilt in 4-H. Dana inherited her grandmothers sewing machine, in 2000, and began sewing small projects for her young children. In 2003, she started costume making for medieval and renaissance reenactments. Since then, Dana’s sewn garments for theatrical productions, weddings and special occasions. Dana has a background in retail management and human resources. Dana joined Team NZP in 2018, as marketing coordinator, and she illustrates step-by-step graphics for the NZP Blog and patterns, heads up Team NZP operations, and coordinates the educational offerings at The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show in Madison, Wis.

No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks Part One on Sewing With Nancy
One of the easiest places to start quilting is with a 1/2-square triangle. Nancy Zieman shows how to create this traditional quilting staple without fussing with bias-cut edges. Make the block unit easily, “Nancy’s no-hassle way,” with this episode of Sewing With Nancy, which features step-by-step details for creating precision-made quilt blocks.
During the first episode on Sewing With Nancy, learn to create six different blocks, all made with 1/2-square triangles. During the second episode—next week’s feature—learn about 1/4-square triangles. Watch this Sewing With Nancy episode!
The Box Quilt (1898)
One of the more streamline quilt blocks to create from 1/2-square triangles is the Box Quilt. First illustrated in print in 1898, it’s created with eight 1/2-square triangle blocks and a square. The design has great movement, reminiscent of a pinwheel.
Shadow Play
Instead of making all the 1/2-square triangles from the same fabrics, stitch together three different color combos. This block is called Shadow Play, where the fabric choices create the impact.
Godey DesignGodey’s Lady’s Book was a monthly magazine published in Philadelphia between 1830 and 1876. Before the Civil War, it was the most widely circulated magazine in the United States. Sarah Josepha Hall was the editor of the magazine from 1837 to 1877; she also wrote Mary Had a Little Lamb. One of the designs featured in the magazine in 1858 was simply called, Godey Design.
Square in a Square
When researching quilt block names, Nancy found literally dozens of quilt blocks named Square in a Square. With seemingly limitless geometric options with squares, no wonder it’s a common name. Regardless, it’s an attractive block all designed with 1/2-square triangles.
May Basket
May Basket is another frequently used name for a quilt block. This block is also named, Cactus Flower. Your fabric choice will dictate the name. This version combines two sizes of finished triangles: 3-1/2″ and 6-1/2″, giving the block a center focal point.
Nancy’s Spool
This block may or may not be an original arrangement of 1/2-square triangles. Our guess is that it has been created before, but since Nancy couldn’t find it in print, she named it Nancy’s Spool.
How to Make 1/2-Square Triangles
During the episode, Nancy shared how to easily make the above blocks as well as basic 2-1/2″, 3-1/2″, 4-1/2″, 5-1/2″ and 6-1/2″ half-square triangles. (Learn 1/4-square triangle tips in the next episode!) There’s no hassle and no need to cut a single triangle! The measurements are printed on the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge that Nancy designed for Clover.
Reference the left side of the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge to select a half-square block size.
Cut crosswise strips of two fabrics—the size is printed on the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge. Cut strips into squares.
Lay the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge onto squares to double-check the block size. If the block set is larger or smaller than the confines of the gauge, recut the blocks.
Mark a center diagonal line through No-Hassle Triangles Gauge die cut openings.
Stitch a scant 1/4″ from each side of the center marking.
Cut along the center diagonal line.
Presto, there are now two accurate 1/2-square triangles!
Watch No-Hassle Triangles (Part One and Part Two) on The Best of Sewing With Nancy online.

Fearless Quilting Finishes Part One on Sewing With Nancy
Nancy Zieman was often asked, “How do you determine topics for your TV show, Sewing With Nancy?” Good question! There are many answers to that question—what she wanted you to learn, what she thought you’d like to know, what’s trendy in sewing, quilting, or embroidering . . . and the basics, there are always newcomers or those of us who need refresher courses.
The basics, that’s what drove Sewing With Nancy’s 3-part series, Fearless Quilting Finishes, teaching the basics of quilting borders, quilting, and binding.
During the first online Sewing With Nancy streaming video, you’ll learn eight, yes eight, techniques in one 30-minute episode! From the most simple border to some artsy options!
Checkerboard Border Preview
Cut crosswise strips of light and dark fabrics to use in the main quilt design. (Nancy used 1-1/2″ strips in this small wall quilt or table topper.)
Stitch together a light and a dark strip, right sides together. Press seam toward the dark fabric. Cut strips in half.
Stack two of the half-strips, right sides together, positioning the light coloration of one strip over the dark section of the second strip.
Subcut strips into sections the same width as the strip.
Join subcut pairs, right sides together, to form the 4-patch. Chain stitch pairs, one after the other.
Press the seams open and lay out the 4-patch blocks to create a checkerboard border.
Simple, but creative, don’t you think? This border shines by itself!
Seven more ideas during the show!
Show us What You’re Making! We love to hear from you, so whether you’ve tried one of Nancy’s Sewing Patterns, or you’re planning on stitching a project you’ve seen on Sewing With Nancy or on The Nancy Zieman Productions Blog, share your experiences and photos with us on Facebook or Instagram!
Happy stitching!

Her comment is: This is exciting! I just completed my fall table runner! Actually, I made 4. My 3 sisters live near each other while I am mile apart. They get together once a month and do a craft or something special. I felt left out and miss them, so I came up with a plan to do something together. I put 4 table runner panels together and cut out fall shapes adding steam a seam to the backs. I then sent them to my sister and had them design their runners with the applique designs. they sent them back and I appliqued their designs, quilted and sewed the binding to the front. one day this month, I will get down to visit, sit and have tea while we sew the binding to the backs and catch up! I’ll send photos of the completed runners!

One of Our Favorite Sewing With Nancy Memories on the Road at the Sewing & Stichery Expo in Puyallup WA
One of our favorite Sewing With Nancy memories is when the Nancy Zieman team “took the show on the road”, and recorded at the 2014 Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, Washington –near Seattle, WA– where over 30,000 sewing enthusiasts gather to share, learn, and enjoy their love of sewing! Our friends at Washington State University State Extension, along with many talented volunteer Clothing & Textile Advisors (CTAs), host the annual Sewing & Stitchery Expo. To help celebrate the 30th anniversary of this mega sewing event, the Sewing With Nancy crew packed up their camera equipment – and for the first time ever – we took Sewing With Nancy On The Road to capture the unique camaraderie between sewing pattern designers, teachers, vendors, and event attendees.
Stitching a Sewing Community Together is this week’s Sewing With Nancy online video feature and here’s a preview of the exciting events Nancy and team captured on location:
Learn Tips from a Pattern Designer
The episode begins with my interview with renowned sewing author, designer, and educator, Pati Palmer of Palmer/Pletsch Associates. Pati shares the process of designing patterns—she specializes in presenting ideas from a sewers point of view.
See the Sewing World from a Pattern Company’s Perspective
Kathy Marrone, editor of Vogue Pattern magazineand also representing The McCall Pattern Company, presents a unique point of view of what a pattern company learns from attending a sewing event. Her insight might surprise you! (Notice the thumbs-up sign from Ben, our director. It was a good “take!” Great job, Nancy!)
Ever Wonder about the Fabric Designing Process?
Tula Pink, graphic artist turned extraordinary fabric designer and quilt designer, shares how inspirations turn into fabric.
Learning—That’s What Sewing Expos are All About
We know you’ll enjoy Nancy’s interview with Candice Jewett, from Quality Sew & Vac in WA, an amazing serging instructor.
Just How Did this Expo Begin?
Nancy sits down for an interview with Joanne Ross, Show Founder & Director, and reminisces about the past while looking forward to the future.
Style Show Anyone?
Mary Collen, style show manager for the Sewing & Stitchery Expo, shares behind-the-scene activities of orchestrating approximately 14 free style shows during the 4-day event. (There’s Inga-sound tech on the left, Mike-videographer in the center, on the far right is Richard Zieman-crowd control
and you don’t see Deanna Springer-because she’s always taking the behind the scenes photos – that you see here in the NZP Blog).
Meet and Greet
One of Nancy’s favorite things to do at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo was to present her sewing seminars and meet other sewing enthusiasts. After each of Nancy’s seminars, an enthusiastic group would gather for some one-on-one time with Nancy.
The 2020 Sewing & Stitchery Expo is February 27 – March 1, 2020. Start planning your trip now! If you’re lucky, you might see Mount Rainier. On the day we packed up our gear and headed for airport, the mountain graced the sky. In the lower right corner of the photo Deanna snapped, you can see Mount Rainier. Nancy always shared with us that she attended the show for 10 years before she ever saw the majestic mountain, and she was starting to think that the much talked about mountain was photoshopped into pictures!

Stress Free Quilting With Machine Embroidery Part Two
Sometimes the quilting step is the most perplexing and stressful. Your goal is for a stress-free process, but where to begin? Denise Abel, Nancy Zieman’s guest on Sewing With Nancy, has a solution—use an embroidery machine and turn it into a quilting machine. Denise joins Nancy for the second part of this series, Stress-Free Quilting with Machine Embroidery. Watch the second part on Sewing With Nancy, online.
First Episode Highlights
During the first program of this series, Denise and Nancy showcase piecing simple blocks using an embroidery machine. If you missed that episode, watch Stress-Free Quilting with Machine Embroidery Part One, today! Programming the design into the embroidery machine yields precisely stitched blocks with unbelievable accuracy.
Highlights from the Second Episode
Determine the layout of the blocks. For the Simple Shadow blocks, there are a few design options.
Stress-Free Hooping
Positioning the three layers of a quilting sandwich—backing, batting, and pieced top—evenly into a hoop might seem tricky at first glance! Not so, with these techniques.
First option: Spray baste the layers together
Tape backing to tabletop, wrong side up.
Lightly spray baste the backing fabric with quilt basting spray.
Position batting.
Lightly spray baste the batting.
Position pieced top; right side up.
The quilt sandwich is ready to hoop.
Second option: Fuse-tack the layers together.
Cut 1/2″ wide strips of pressure sensitive fusible web tape.
Press 1/2″ wide strips to the wrong side of backing and quilt top a fist width apart.
Remove paper backing.
Press layers together.
The quilt sandwich is ready to hoop.
Choose a quilting embroidery design
There are 24 quilting designs available with the book purchase. The two designs that were used to quilt the layers of this lap quilt are featured below.
There are other embroidery designs that are digitized for machine quilting. Look for designs that have compatible components such as a square, a 1/2-square triangle, or borders.
Attach embroidery hoop
Mark center of each block with a wash-away marking pen . This block has a seam at the center, which eliminates this step.
Add double-sided basting tape to the underneath side of the inner hoop.
Position hoop on fabric, aligning crossmarks of hoop with wash-away marks on fabric, with block seams, or crossmarks on template.
Place outer hoop underneath the quilt sandwich; loosen the screw. Insert inner hoop into the fabric. Tighten screws.
Remove template if a template was used.
Close-up of the quilting stitches
Denise used white thread to stitch the full embroidery design in the center of the pieced blocks and the design that fills a 1/2-square block in the corner of each white triangle.

2019 Table Runner Sewing Tutorials Round Up by Nancy Zieman Productions
Hexagon Hit & Miss Table Runner
At first glance, this table runner looks like it’s pieced with traditional hexagons. Not so with this speedy column quilt design. The hexagon shapes are created with two halves, eliminating the intersection of three seams, otherwise known as Y-seams. With this technique, faux hexagon halves are stitched in columns with relative speed and ease. Plus, the results are dramatic with Nancy’s Hit & Miss Table Runner Tutorial .
Topsy Turvy Table RunnerMake a nontraditional Dresden plate. No round shapes here—the wedge-shapes of the Dresden are stitched, well … topsy-turvy, to create a linear look. This finished table runner is approximately 18″ x 86″. You could shorten or lengthen depending upon your table size. See how easy it is to make the Topsy-Turvy Table Runner.
No-Hassle Triangles Table Runner
Many of you have commented on the ease of creating triangles with the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge and wanted additional projects. We’re confident you’ll add the No-Hassle Triangles Table Runner to your to-do list. Made in the same style as the projects featured in Nancy’s Quick Column Quilts, triangle blocks plus column strips make for a fast, easy, and no-hassle assembly of this 21″ x 56-1/2″ No-Hassle Triangles Table Runner.
Festive Fall Table Runner
You may recognize this next table runner tutorial from our 2018 NZP Fall Table Runner Challenge. Featured is the Box Quilt Block, which dates back to 1898. Each 12-1/2″ block is made with eight half-square triangles and a center square. Streamline the piecing process by using the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge.
Dresden Melody Table Runner
Think outside the traditional patchwork world and use a multisized Dresden template to add a modern twist to a tried ‘n true design. We call it the Dresden Melody with five half-Dresden plate designs that seem to flow melodically together. The finished Dresden Melody Table Runner measures 28″ x 82″.
Heartbeat Table Runner
No matter the size—table runner to king quilt—you can sew a quick column quilt in a heartbeat! Colorful accent strips in a variety of widths make up the heartbeat pattern, while the subdued one-color strips add a perfect background for the design. In Quick Column Quilts you’ll watch Nancy stitch a queen-sized quilt. In this blog posting, we’ve scaled down the design for this Heartbeat Table Runner size, 24″ x 57″.
Silk and Ribbon Table RunnerHere’s a table runner that you can easily create in 2-hours—our kind of home décor project! Renaissance Ribbons, Silk Dupioni, and a little thread are all you’ll need. The ribbon is the unifying element in this design. The Silk and Ribbon Table Runner is a super-fast sewing project!
FREE! Afternoon Picnic Table Runner Tutorial!
This NEW! Puzzling Parallelogram Patchwork Table Runner, by Team NZP, goes together in an afternoon of sewing and features twelve 6″ modified 1/4-square triangle quilt blocks—all made from just three fat quarters, and a fourth fat quarter for binding. This design looks complicated, but is truly easy to make and is a great project for beginning quilters. The finished size of this table runner is approximately 12-1/2″ x 36-1/2″.

The Absolute Easiest Way to Sew Part Three on Sewing With Nancy
Sew it simple. Sew to have fun. How? It’s straightforward after you learn The Absolute Easiest Way to Sew! This time, learn how to insert an invisible zipper. To seamlessly—pun intended—insert an invisible zipper into the seam use this modified approach, attaching the facing before sewing the zipper. It’s a new approach and one of Nancy Zieman’s absolute easiest sewing tips.
How to Insert an Invisible Zipper
Stitch the shoulder seams of the top or dress.
Fuse interfacing to the front and back neckline facing fabrics.
Stitch the shoulder seams of the facing pieces.
Do not stitch the center back seam at this point.
Align the facing to the garment, right sides together, matching notches.
Stitch the facing to the neckline.
Grade the seam allowances, using a pinking blade with a rotary cutter for the fastest and easiest results.
Press the seam allowances toward the facing.
Understitch, stitching the seam allowances to the facing. Use a multizigzag.
Flatten out the zipper tape, pressing the teeth to the outside.
Place a piece of tape or a pin above the zipper stop on one side of the zipper.
Mark the 5/8″ seam allowances along both sides of the center back seam. Begin marking at the neckline seam, and continue marking the length of the zipper opening.
Align one side of the zipper tape to the corresponding side of the dress, meeting the zipper teeth to the 5/8″ marking and placing the zipper top slightly below the neckline seam.
Pin one side of the zipper to the fabric.
Attach the Invisible Zipper Foot. Starting at the neckline seam, position the presser foot on top of the zipper tape with the needle stitching along side of the zipper teeth.
After stitching, close the zipper to check that the zipper stop is directly below the neckline seam.
Align the second half of the zipper at the top of the neckline, placing the remaining side of the zipper at the same distance from the top of the neckline.
Align the zipper teeth to the marking; pin. Then, stitch the zipper to the remaining side of the dress/top.
After stitching, check to make certain the neckline edges align.
Fold the facing over the zipper tape; hand stitch.
Pin the lower portion of the seam from the hem to the end of the zipper.
Move the invisible zipper foot completely to the left of the needle. Stitch from the zipper stopping point to the hem.
Ta dah!
The Invisible Zipper technique, plus much more is printed in The Absolute Easiest Way to Sew.
All of Nancy’s favorite sewing tips are in one book.
