NZP Downloadable Stocking Template
7-3/4″ Bordeaux Ultimate Shears
Optional: Quilter’s Basting Spray, Rotary Cutter and Pinking Blade
Printing the Stocking Pattern:
Download the NZP Stocking Template
Print the stocking template. It’s a large image so opt to “tile large pages” if applicable. The template will print on six pages. After assembled and cut out—stocking shape will measure approximately 15″ x 20-1/2″.
Use the 1″ grid within the stocking shape as a guide when taping pages together.
Sewing Directions
Cut twelve 5″ fabric squares from five different assorted green fabrics.

Cut three 5″ squares from cranberry red fabric.
Cut three 5″ squares from Pellon Wonder Under.

Press Pellon Wonder Under squares to back of three cranberry red fabric squares.
Trace four 2-1/4″ circles (about the size of a juice glass) on each of the three cranberry red fabric squares.

Remove paper backing from circles.
Center cranberry fabric circles on center of green fabric squares, using the 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge set at 1-3/8″.
Using an iron, press circles to the center of all twelve green fabric squares.
Optional: Use a zigzag stitch to applique circles to background fabric squares.
Randomly arrange twelve 5″ Fabric Squares in three rows of two, and two rows of three-as shown. Snap a digital picture of the arrangement to use as a reference for later stitching fabric squares together.
Stitch squares in pairs, right sides together.
Press seam allowances to one side, making sure to press every other row to the right and opposing rows to the left.
Arrange rows, as shown, to create stocking front patchwork.
With right sides together, lock opposing vertical seam allowances and stitch.
Press seam allowances to one side.

Spray one side of 18″ x 22″ Pellon Fleece with Quilter’s Basting Spray.
Place the wrong side of the stocking front patchwork to the sprayed fleece.
Optional: Machine Quilt the stocking front patchwork and batting layers using The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot.
Create the Stocking
Cut out the Stocking Front shape from the Stocking Front Patchwork – using the NZP Downloadable Stocking Template .
Then, lay the stocking pattern on the backing/lining fabric and cut three: One stocking back and two lining pieces.
Lay the template on the remaining Pellon Fleece and cut one layer for Stocking Back.
Apply Quilter’s Basting Spray to Pellon Fleece.
Adhere to the stocking back fabric to the Pellon Fleece.
Cut 1-1/2 yd. purchased piping. Or make your own piping–like we did, and chose one fat quarter of Green Smoothie Confetti Cotton Solid from Riley Blake Designs. Follow the directions from our 2016 Christmas Stocking Tutorial–to create piping.
The following directions are from our 2016 Christmas Stocking Tutorial. Using a Piping Foot or Zipper Foot to apply the piping to the right side of the patchwork stocking edges.
No need to apply piping at stocking top edge.
Create the Hanging Loop
Cut a fabric rectangle measuring 2-1/2″ x 6-1/2″ and make a hanging loop following the directions in our 2016 Christmas Stocking Tutorial .
Fold the loop in half and pin the cut edges to the top of the right side of the stocking lining.
Baste.
Create the Stocking
Place stocking front and lining, right sides together. Pin along top edge.
Place stocking back and lining, right sides together. Pin along top edge.
Use a 1/4″ seam allowance to stitch along top edge of front and back stocking.
Press seams open.
Pieces should look like this from the wrong side:
With both stocking back and front open and flat, meet right sides together and pin.
When joining the stocking, leave a 4″ unstitched opening along the lining straight edge. As a reminder to stop stitching at this area, place a pin parallel to the cut edge, rather than perpendicular.Stitch around the stocking using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Backstitch at the start and finish, leaving 4″ unsewn along the lining’s straight edge.
Press the seam allowance at the opening.
Optional: Use a rotary cutter pinking blade to trim excess fabric seam allowance from the seam at the curved edges.

Turn the stocking right side out through the opening.
Hand stitch the opening closed.
Tuck the lining into the stocking fabric. Press.
Our stocking is complete! We look forward to seeing your stockings in the Nancy Zieman Productions 2019 Christmas Stocking Sewing Challenge!

Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares Part Two on Sewing With Nancy
From gift giving to personal sewing, Nancy Zieman found many projects could be stitched from the simplest shapes. We’ve already shared the first episode of the three-part series, Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares, on Sewing With Nancy. This blog posting focuses on part two of the series, sharing useful, yet clever items such as: Hold-it Sacks, Mini Fabric Sacks, Fabric Bins, and Wall Pockets. With 12 complete projects in all, you won’t want to miss this collection.
Hold-it Sacks
The Hold-it Sacks are Nancy’s first sew-simple projects in this episode. Prop up your cell phone or electronic tablet in the cradle area of a Hold-it Sack. Made from laminated fabric, they’re ideal to use throughout your home or office. The unique finished shapes appear as if they were made from complicated patterns, but not these gadget holders. They’re all made from rectangular shapes.
Mini Fabric Sacks
Toss them in a game or use them to hold down pattern pieces, these Mini Fabric Sacks can be both fun and functional. You can easily make three mini sacks in an hour or less.
Fabric Bins
Don’t settle for tan or black bins for your shelf, customize fabric bins to accent your home décor by selecting coordinating fabrics. Make from, you guessed it, rectangle and square fabric pieces. The sewing is enjoyable and the end result is as fresh in appearance as it is useful. Grommets serve as both handles and a focal point.
Wall Pockets
What’s good for the shelf is good for the wall! With a little tweaking of the instructions, fabric bins turn into wall pockets that provide organization and style to any home or work office.

Remembering Nancy Zieman and Celebrating her Legacy
Two years ago, today, we lost our dear friend Nancy Zieman. As we continue to celebrate Nancy’s legacy, we remember her strength, perseverance, and many contributions to our world. In an interview with Richard Zieman, Nancy’s husband shares memories, conversations with Nancy, and why he wrote his biography about Nancy. “Nancy Zieman, The Rest of the Story–A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends” In a interview with the NZP Team, Richard Zieman (Nancy Zieman’s husband and owner of Nancy Zieman Productions) shares memories, conversations with Nancy, and why he wrote his new book, Nancy Zieman, The Rest of the Story—A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends.
Richard Zieman is offering his book with DVD for $14 plus free shipping, today and tomorrow, at shopnzp.com
In his biography, Nancy Zieman, The Rest of the Story—A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends, Richard shares an intimate look into Nancy’s life and career—focusing mainly on the five years since Nancy’s autobiography, Seams Unlikely, written in 2012.
“Prior to Nancy’s passing, on November 14, 2017, Nancy and I talked about the positive reach of Seams Unlikely and the powerful stories shared by readers, and by Sewing With Nancy viewers, on how Nancy’s perseverance and faith deeply impacted their lives and inspired their own perseverance. Nancy and I talked several times about writing a second book—to tell the ‘rest of the story.’ My book, Nancy Zieman, The Rest of the Story—A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends picks up where Seams Unlikely ended, and includes Nancy’s personal reflections on her life, career, faith, and the many blessings of family and friends—especially during her final months.” Richard Zieman
Nancy Zieman, The Rest of the Story—A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends begins with a recap, from Seams Unlikely, and shares Nancy’s life story from childhood to early adulthood—when Ms. Nancy Luedtke meets Mr. Richard Zieman.
Richard includes a DVD within the inside back cover of his book. This special DVD shares an exclusive 26 minute video of Nancy’s life story in a very personal and memorable way.
From left to right, Ted Zieman, Luella Zieman, Alison Zieman, Richard Zieman, Barbara Luedkte Eckstein, Avery Zieman, Nancy Zieman, Warren Eckstein, Tom Zieman, Katelyn Zieman, and Adeline Zieman
Richard shares his thoughts in an excerpt from the book prologue in Nancy Zieman, The Rest of the Story—A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends:
“Nancy started her autobiography, Seams Unlikely, with the words, ‘I never intended to write an autobiography.’ In similar fashion, I never intended to write Nancy’s biography, at least not so soon, picking up where Seams Unlikely ended. But those who knew Nancy Zieman personally, as well as those who appreciated Nancy’s role in the sewing and quilting industry, form a unique community of people who care deeply and respectfully for others. I want them to know the rest of Nancy’s story.
Although she had a very public professional life, Nancy was at heart a very reserved person who shared the difficulties of her life with few people. She was quiet about her physical challenges, especially those that plagued the last few years of her life, and she always tried to look on the positive side of things.
Nancy left us on November 14, 2017, and almost immediately people began requesting the story of the final years of her life. One might expect that those five years were filled with sadness and pain—and there was a lot of that—but in those years Nancy also kept looking and planning for the future. She never stopped dreaming or creating.”
From left to right, Donna Fenske, Gail Brown, Mary Mulari, Pat Hahn, Laurie Gorman, Nancy Zieman, Natalie Sewell, and Eileen Roche.
“I wrote this book for those who came to know Nancy personally, as well as those who felt a personal relationship with Nancy as viewers of Sewing With Nancy. In the book I share an intimate look into our family life and Nancy’s career. I’ve included Nancy’s personal reflections on her life, career, faith, and the many blessings of family and friends—especially during her final months.”
“Nancy’s story is the story of those she touched. And, because of that, I thank the viewers of Sewing With Nancy along with those who appreciate the sewing products she created and all those whom Nancy touched professionally in one way or another.” Richard Zieman
Thank you to Richard Zieman for sharing his insights with NZP Blog readers. As we celebrate Nancy’s legacy, we remember her strength and perseverance during tough times and happy times. Nancy Zieman the Rest of the Story—A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Friends—A NEW! book by Nancy Zieman’s husband, Richard Zieman—is a moving and inspiring account of an unexpected journey with life’s final challenges. Richard, along with family and friends, share personal stories of the faith, family, and friendships that sustained Nancy.

When not using this handy accessory on your luggage, zip the bags together and it’s a handy shoulder tote.
Sewing With Nancy Trivia—This photo was quickly taken on the Sewing With Nancy set. Notice the tape on the floor? Those were the positioning marks for Nancy’s chair in the Nancy’s Corner area. The chair had to be moved in order to take the photo. Now you see how they kept the props and furniture in the right place!

Approximate finished size: 5-1/2″ x 18″
Supplies Needed:
• 3/8 yd. knit fabric (54″ wide)
• Coordinating, all-purpose thread
• One 4″ strip double stick fusible web, such as Lite Steam-A-Seam2
Optional: I Sew For Fun Notions:
I Sew For Fun Heart-Shaped Pins
I Sew For Fun Wonder Clips
I Sew For Fun Sew Safe Presser Foot
I Sew For Fun 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge
Instructions:
Please read all instructions before beginning. Use the width of the presser foot as the depth of the seam allowance.
1. Cut one 12″ x 36″ rectangle from knit fabric.
2. Stitch side seam.
Fold the rectangle of fabric, right sides together, matching long edges. Pin or use Wonder Clips to secure edges.
Set your machine for a straight stitch.
Stitch the long edge, leaving a 4″ opening unstitched near the middle, for turning scarf right side out later.
Press the seam allowance flat, then open.
3. Prepare and stitch the scarf tube.
With scarf wrong side out, reach into one end and grasp the other end of the tube from the inside.
Gently pull the far end of the tube until cut edges meet. The outside layer of fabric will be wrong side out.
Secure the cut edges with pins or Wonder Clips.
Stitch ends of the tube together. It is easiest to stitch from the inside of the tube.
Remember to use the freearm on your sewing machine when sewing small areas to make it easy.
4. Finish the scarf.
Turn the tube right side out through the opening in the side seam.
Turn under the seam allowances in the opening; press.
Hand stitch opening closed.
Optional: Fusing is a fast alternative, Press a strip of double stick fusible web to one seam allowance. Remove the paper, and press the seam together.

No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks Part Two on Sewing With Nancy
Triangular shapes can be sticklers to piece! Quilt patterns with 1/2-square and 1/4-square triangles are found in many traditional quilt pattern designs. Here’s how to take the hassle out of creating triangles, in particular 1/4-square triangles. For more details watch the second episode of No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks online.
The Sampler Quilt
This 12-block quilt features both 1/2- and 1/4-square blocks. In a previous blog, Nancy Zieman featured six of the 1/2-square triangle blocks. Now learn how to combine the two block styles to create amazing quilt designs.
1/4-Square Dance
Some quilt block names have a long history; others are simply made up on the fly! We’ll let you decide the authenticity of this block named the 1/4-Square Dance! Regardless of what it’s called, it’s the perfect block to begin our no-hassle quilt block journey.
Boy’s Nonsense (1898)
This quilt block named, Boy’s Nonsense, was officially recorded and appears in print in 1898. The block appears to include rectangular strips. Not so, the design is a combination of 1/2- and 1/4-square triangles plus a plain center square.
Silent Star
It might be difficult to comprehend, but the next block, Silent Star, is almost identical to the last block, Boy’s Nonsense. The main difference in construction is the center block—all the other blocks are the same. This is the case where fabric choices totally change the design!
Ohio Star
Simple in design, yet elegant, the Ohio Star quilt block has been in use since the early 1800s, with a spike in popularity in the 1930s. See how this 9-patch block can be made the no-hassle way in the 21st century.
Star of Hope (1980)
Now for your master’s degree in 1/4-square triangles! The Star of Hope combines a 1/2- and 1/4-square triangle; Nancy called it a modified 1/4-square. Notice the three-color block of aqua, ivory, and teal. Success comes by thinking this through and following the directions!
Card Trick (1979)
The Card Trick Quilt Block, like most magic, seems impossible to reproduce. What appears as sleight of hand, is a very logical block to create once you see the elements. The Card Trick—we know you will not be fooled by the design!
How to Make 1/4-Square Triangles
There are several ways to make triangles; our preference is to use the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge. Reference the left side of the gauge for 1/2-square triangles and the right side for 1/4-square triangles.
Depress and slide the guide to the size triangle you’d like to make. The guide will lock in place.
Cut strips the size printed on the gauge. Then cut strips into squares. In this example, cut 6-1/4″ strips, then cut strips into 6-1/4″ squares.
Stack two blocks.
Mark center diagonal line through the die-cut openings on the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge.
Stitch a scant 1/4″ from each side of center.
Cut along center; press.
Stack two 1/2-square triangles, meeting opposite colors.
Slide the gauge to the 1/2-square triangle marking on the left side. Double check that the block fits within the gauge perimeters.
Mark center diagonal line through die cut openings.
Cut along center marking; press.
This time, you’ll have two accurate 1/4-square triangles! Using the No-Hassle Triangles Gauge guarantees that the sizes of the 1/2-square and 1/4-square triangles are compatible in a quilt design!
