Quilt With Carefree Curves Part Two on The Best of Sewing With Nancy
Looking for a quilt block on Pinterest or in a reference book? Have you noticed the unusual names given to quilt blocks? One of the most unique monikers, Hearts and Gizzards, dates back to the late 1800s. The gizzard shape, opposite the recognizable heart motif is not something many modern-day people will recognize. This unique block is the focus of this week’s featured Sewing With Nancy program, Quilt with Carefree Curves.
Learn a carefree approach for constructing this once-difficult block using Trace ‘n Create Quilt Templates—Carefree Curves .
Carefree Hearts & GizzardsIn last Thursday’s NZP blog posting, we previewed the first program of this 2-part TV series. If you didn’t see the traditional way of seaming opposing curves, review our Carefree Curves part one blog posting. The traditional way of seaming opposing curves isn’t always easy. But there’s a solution, take Nancy Zieman’s carefree approach using fusible interfacing.
Select the Hearts & Gizzards Template. You can create five quilt-block sizes from super-sized to traditional: 16-1/2″, 14-1/2″, 12-1/2″, 10-1/2″, and 8-1/2″ blocks.
Select two fabrics, contrasting in color.
For every two blocks, cut one background square from each fabric. (See template for sizes.)
Cut background squares in half diagonally.
Cut crosswise strips from both fabric colors for Hearts & Gizzards shapes. For every two blocks, cut four Heart & Gizzard shapes from each fabric. (Even the strip sizes are printed right on the template—how easy is that!)
Cut crosswise strips of lightweight fusible interfacing, such as Pellon Sof-Shape—2-1/2″ to 3-1/2” crosswise strips depending upon size of heart. (Packaging contains full instructions.)
Align the template on the wrong side of the crosswise strip, placing the template “fabric edge” marking of selected size along the top edge of the fabric.
Use a fine-point fabric marker to trace along the template.
Starting at one edge, trace both sides of template with a fabric marking pen/pencil.
Trace curve within die-cut areas of template.
Rotate template 180-degrees; align template “fabric edge” with fabric lower edge and side of template with previously traced line. Trace untraced side of template and curve within die-cut areas.
Repeat tracing and rotating process until desired quantity is achieved.
Cut along straight trace lines, using a rotary cutter, ruler, and mat.
Align top edges of fabric and interfacing, right side of fabric to fusible side of interfacing; pin. Position top of next wedge along the lower edge of the interfacing; pin.
Stitch along the curved markings with a short stitch length.
Cut apart.
Trim away excess fabric. For best results, use a pinking shears or pinking rotary cutter blade.
Trim away excess interior interfacing, leaving 1″ of interfacing.
Turn interfacing to wrong side.
Press curved edge, making certain seam is at the edge.
Pin two Hearts & Gizzards shapes to a contrasting background triangle as illustrated.
Machine stitch shapes to background, using a straight stitch, zigzag, or blind hem stitch.
Repeat process for a reversed color option.
Stitch triangles of opposite color combinations together, using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press seam allowance open.
Use two sizes of hearts within one block for a design variation.
Place four block sections together to see how the design unfolds.
There’s More! When you watch online, you’ll also see Nancy’s Wagon Wheel option, using the third template included with the Carefree Curves Template Set.

Meet the Hosts of Stitch it! Sisters
Deanna Springer stitched her first doll quilt when she was just six years old. Deanna’s love for all things sewing was nurtured by her mom and grandmothers, and later in 4-H. Deanna started working for Nancy Zieman companies in 1989 and is celebrating 30 years with NZ companies. Nancy and Deanna started Nancy Zieman Productions, LLC. (NZP) in 2007. Deanna worked alongside Nancy as marketing coordinator, business manager, co-director of video production, and in product development and project design. Dana Casey was inspired to begin sewing at a young age by her family of avid sewists. At age 10, with guidance from her big sister Deanna, she stitched her first small quilt in 4-H. Dana inherited her grandmothers sewing machine, in 2000, and began sewing small projects for her young children. In 2003, she started costume making for medieval and renaissance reenactments. Since then, Dana’s sewn garments for theatrical productions, weddings and special occasions. Dana has a background in retail management and human resources. Dana joined Team NZP in 2018, as marketing coordinator, and she illustrates step-by-step graphics for the NZP Blog and patterns, heads up Team NZP operations, and coordinates the educational offerings at The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show in Madison, Wis.

Quilt With Carefree Curves Part One on The Best of Sewing With Nancy
Curved seams have been in traditional quilt blocks for years. Unfortunately, curved seams are not necessarily fun or fast to sew, until now. Using two squares, yes squares, you can create a 1/4-circle block, similar to the well-known Drunkard’s Path design, without matching any opposing curved seams.
Watch and learn as Nancy demonstrates the simple machine appliqué technique in this two-part Sewing With Nancy series, Quilt with Carefree Curves. It is the featured online Sewing With Nancy video.
Traditional Curved Piecing Technique
Take a look at the traditionally cut pieces used to make a curved seam block. To sew the seam, opposing curves must be joined. Whenever Nancy tried to sew this seam, she was quite unhappy with the results. Nancy generally avoided all quilt patterns with curved seams, and she was not alone.
Templates Come to the Rescue
Liking the looks of curved-seamed blocks, but totally not liking the technique, Nancy thought about enlisting the help of a sewing product, fusible interfacing and some unconventional quilting techniques.
Nancy found it easier to trace the curve shape and then sew those curves, rather than working with opposing seams. So, She developed a set of templates, Carefree Curves Quilting Templates. These templates assist you in making traditional to super-sized blocks.
To create the 1/4-Circle blocks, use the circle template, which makes three sizes of blocks: 4-1/2″, 6-1/2″, and 8-1/2″. You’ll see how the other two templates are used next week!
How to Create Carefree 1/4-Circle BlocksFor every four blocks cut four background squares, and cut one square to create four 1/4-Circles. The sizes are printed on the template.
Cut a square of lightweight fusible interfacing the same size as the 1/4-Circles.
Layer the squares (fabric and interfacing), right side of fabric to the smooth side of the interfacing.
Place the template on fabric/interfacing squares. Trace circle and quarter markings.
Stitch along the traced line.
Trim away excess fabric. For best results, use a pinking shears or pinking rotary cutter blade.
Align ruler along quarter markings. Cut, using rotary cutter, ruler, and mat.
Trim away excess interfacing from the interior, leaving 1″ of interfacing.
Turn interfacing to wrong side. For best results, run a smooth edge Hera Marker along the stitching line to define the curve.
Press curved edge, making certain seam is at the edge.
Pin 1/4-Circle to one corner of the background square. Each sewn/cut circle creates four blocks.
Machine stitch 1/4-Circle to block, using a straight stitch, blind hem, or zigzag stitch.
Design Options:When you watch the Sewing With Nancy series, you’ll see all of these steps in motion! Plus, Nancy shows how easy it is to create a variety of designs.
1/4-Circle—you’re not limited to one size of circle. Here we placed the larger 1/4-Circle in one corner of the block and the smallest 1/4-Circle in the opposite corner.

Her comment is: Quilting with an embroidery make would be so much fun and such a time saver. I would love to read Nancy’s story about her life. She was truly a remarkable woman.
Sew to Give Spotlight! Today watch Nancy Zieman’s 5 minute Nancy’s Corner Interview on Sewing With Nancy with guest Catrina Sparkmen, of Black Threads. Six women artists and writers formed a modern day quilting bee. Together they learned a new art form—quilting—while sharing history and the love of family. As they found out, quilts not only keep us warm, but tell stories and also build friendships. These women made six very special quilts, and each quilt will be treasured for a lifetime.
Happy Quilting!

Quilt With an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons Part Two on The Best of Sewing With Nancy
If you own an embroidery machine, most likely you’ve added monograms to towels or a cute design to baby clothes. But, did you ever think that your embroidery machine’s hidden talent was to quilt layers of fabric with remarkable finesse? Welcome back embroidery and quilting expert Eileen Roche, who will show you how to double the use of your embroidery machine.
Watch as Eileen shares the magic in quilting on part two of Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons on Sewing With Nancy. If you missed part one, last week, you can always watch it online at NancyZieman.com.
Quilted Shapes
Embroidery isn’t limited to a design created by thread-dense stitches. Swirls or geometric shapes can also be embroidered. For example, the squares, circles, and hexagons as featured in Eileen’s sampler pillow, can easily be quilted with an embroidery machine. The end result is the appearance of stitching that was done by hand or with a long-arm quilting machine.
Use the DIME (Designs in Machine Embroidery) template to align shapes under the embroidery machine. See how on today’s featured episode of Sewing With Nancy.
Select a design to fit the shape and let your embroidery machine do the work of a computerized longarm. You’ll be amazed with the simplicity and thrilled with the results.
All-Over Quilting Designs
If you’ve pieced a quilt top but have never taken the time to quilt all the layers together, Eileen’s all-over quilting with an embroidery machine technique is for you. The quilt sandwich is hooped section by section. Templates are used for perfect placement and then the stitching begins with the touch of a button.
Start by drawing a grid over the quilt top using a water-soluble pen. Eileen Roche and Nancy Zieman demonstrate how easy it is to quilt in-the-hoop: one shape at a time, one row at a time. They then nestle the subsequent row, stitch, and finish. Watch all the steps to finishing this quilt on Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons—Part Two.
Continuous Line Quilting
If you’re a quilter first, embroiderer second, you no-doubt appreciate the look of quilts that have been stitched with a continuous design. If your machine has an embroidery unit, you can accomplish the same look that is generally reserved for long-arm quilters. It’s rather magical.
Use templates to determine placement within the hoop. Eileen shares how on today’s Sewing With Nancy episode.
The result is a stunning quilting line that appears continuous.
Eileen and Nancy showcase how this continuous line quilting design can work on a variety of different sized projects.
Easily learn the machine embroidery quilting process. There’s no reason to be intimidated. This easy process is presented from a beginner’s perspective and is broken down into eight easy lessons, including many useful tips and techniques for professional results, all can be found in Quilt With an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons which can be found at shopnzp.com.

Watch Kick it Up A Stitch! with Nancy Zieman and Mary Mulari
Nancy would sometimes say she was Entertainment Challenged. When casual conversation topics turned to the latest movies or escapades of Hollywood Stars, she would kiddingly say she was generally clueless. If you’re wondering why movies are being brought up in a sewing & quilting blog, there’s a slight connection.
One of the movies Nancy enjoyed was Eat—Pray—Love, starring Julia Roberts. She enjoyed watching Julia in movies, but Julia’s usual light-up–a-room smile was somewhat missed on a depressed character. Instead of traveling halfway around the world to find happiness, Nancy kept thinking, “This character needs a hobby—people who create are some of the happiest people I know!”
Nancy imagined if Julia’s character learned, let’s say, how to sew – a totally different movie could have been filmed. How about Sew—Cook—Laugh! In fact, Mary Mulari and Nancy wrote what could become the screenplay inspiration. (We certainly hope someone in Hollywood is reading this blog
)
In past years, Nancy and Mary had presented their little comedy routine, guaranteed to get rid of the blues to sold-out audiences at major sewing/quilting events. They called it Kick It Up a Stitch!
At their last performance of Kick It Up a Stitch! the antics were recorded as a Public TV pledge special. Perhaps some of you watched the hour and a half special on your local PBS channel. If not, you can now order the Kick It Up a Stitch! DVD and watch Nancy and Mary—slightly out of character—making a whole lot of silly! The Kick It Up a Stitch! DVD is now available at shonzp.com.
As a summary, Mary and Nancy do a little sewing. Then, they “kick it up a stitch”, showing the same project in a much more, ahem, glamorous way. Then, they add a little cooking to the mix.
It all starts with a menu—five sewing techniques, then five recipes. Are you wondering what the Egg-cellent Table Toppings are all about? (You’ll just have to watch the TV special or the DVD to find out!)
Here are a few of the Kick It Up a Stitch! program highlights:
Learn valuable techniques such as printing your own vegetable-inspired fabric pieces. You’ll never look at celery the same way again after viewing this DVD !
See how a rotary cutter and cutting mat have equally as many uses in the kitchen as the sewing room.
Plus, be entertained by the Sewing With Nancy band. YES! Nancy had her very own band!
You’re sure to get a kick out of watching Kick it up a Stitch!
A Public Television broadcaster, in Oklahoma, sent Nancy the following note in an email:
You guys knocked it outta the park with the cooking show! Great production, excellent audience reactions, wonderful pace and funny. Congratulations to you, Mary and all the cast (the band) and crew for a job well done!

The Randomly selected winner of a Stitch it! Sisters 5″ Fabric Short Stack with S!S button & sticker, from the January 21 NEW! Cooler Grocery Tote Sewing Tutorial Blog Posting, is Tami.
Her comment is: Our county is going totally plastic bag-less. So when we shop we will need to bring our own bags. This will be perfect for those grocery trips. I already use the reusable bags, but none of mine are as sturdy or as pretty as this bag. I can’t wait to get the materials and give this bag a go.
Happy Cooking!

Quilt With an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons Part One on The Best of Sewing With Nancy
The art of quilting often combines techniques. Traditional quilts are frequently appliquéd, then pieced, and finally all the layers are quilted. If you have an embroidery machine, you can streamline the processes with the touch of a button—the brainchild of Nancy Zieman’s guest Eileen Roche. The quilting technique is practically hands free! Watch as Eileen shares the magic in quilting on part-one of Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons on this Sewing With Nancy series.
Easily learn the machine embroidery quilting process. There’s no reason to be intimidated. This easy process is presented from a beginner’s perspective and is broken down into eight easy lessons, including many useful tips and techniques for professional results.
A machine that’s commonly used to create embroidery designs, is equally a quilting machine. Let’s start with a simple table topper, which features what at first glance is a complicated appliqué. You’ll soon see that the process is perfect for the novice quilter.
Prepare Quilt Sandwich
Like any method of quilting, we first must prepare a quilt sandwich. The quilt sandwich refers to the top, batting, and backing layers of the project. Eileen will show us how easy it is to prepare your sandwich for in-the-hoop quilting on this episode.
Embroidered Appliqué Designs
In the traditional appliquéd quilt process, you’ll create your project using these steps (in order):
Appliqué
Piece
Quilt
In this Sewing With Nancy featured program, Eileen shares the embroidered appliqué quilt process and explains how the steps are similar to traditional quilting, yet are executed quite differently. It’s easy once you watch Eileen’s methods on Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons Part One.
Size and Variety
On the design CD included in the new Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons book, you’ll have the option to create projects in a variety of sizes including 6″, 7″, or 8″ quilt blocks. Choose a size that best suits your project dimensions.
Piecing Techniques
The next step is to join the quilted blocks. Eileen walks us through this process with ease! Here’s a sneak preview. See the complete piecing demonstration on Sewing With Nancy.
Give it a try and join us next week for part two of Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons!
Watch Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons (Part One and Part Two) on Sewing With Nancy online.
For a chance to win a copy of the book, Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons from dime. Please leave a comment below.
The randomly selected winner of a copy of the book, Nancy Zieman, The Rest of the Story by Richard Zieman, from the January 16 Blog Post, A Modern Quilting Bee on The Best of Sewing With Nancy, is Kathleen Drzik.
Her comment is: I didn’t start sewing until 7 years ago but was well-acquainted with who Nancy Zieman was and what she accomplished. My mom met Nancy at an event in Florida a number of years ago and asked her to autograph her sewing A-Z book for me – as a new “sewist.” My husband gave me Nancy’s Seams Unlikely for Christmas and I truly enjoyed Nancy’s story. I would love “The Rest of the Story.” -
Happy Quilting!
