On the third Saturday of each month, we’ll feature one block design, and we’ll be stitching one or more blocks of the same design each month. The blocks are created using Our NEW! Red Elegance Fabric Collection by Riley Blake and the Carefree Curves Trace ‘n Create Template Set by Nancy Zieman for Clover. Follow along as we show step-by-step how to create the April Fan Block.
April Fan Block
NOTE: This block is 8-1/2″ square; 8″ finished square when sewn into finished quilt.
Block Fabrics
For the Nancy’s Red Elegance April Fan Block, select the following four fat quarter fabrics from the NEW! Red Elegance Fat Quarter Bundle along with the “Wagon Wheel & Fan” Template from the Carefree Curves Template Set.
Red Elegance Brick Textured, Red Elegance Brick Rose, Red Elegance Cream Rose and Red Elegance Red Rose.
Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing, and steaming and pressing a second time. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with June Tailor’s Starch Savvy. Press and starch, press and starch.

Cut Fabrics for the Block
Create four of Nancy’s super-simple Fan Blocks from just three fabrics, and a little bias trim made from a fourth fabric!
Cut four 8-1/2″ background squares from Red Elegance Brick Textured.
Cut one 3-3/4″ crosswise fabric strip from Red Elegance Cream Rose .
Cut one 3-3/4″ crosswise fabric strip from Red Elegance Red Rose.
Using a Rotary Cutter, mat, and 6″ x 24″ Ruler, cut 3/4″ bias fabric strips from Red Elegance Brick Rose. Cut and sew approximately 72″ of continuous bias strips. Or simply cut four strips approx. 3/4″ x 6″, and four strips approx. 3/4″ x 12″.
Construct the Blocks
Build the Fan Appliqué
Place Wagon Wheel & Fan Template along 3-3/4″ crosswise fabric strip cut from Red Elegance Cream Rose .
Align the lower Wagon Wheel & Fan Template along edge of fabric strip, and trace template side edges, and trace the curve die-cut opening. Trace four fan wedge shapes.
Each April Fan Block will use two fan wedges from Red Elegance Cream Rose and Red Elegance Red Rose . Trace four fan wedge shapes from both 3-3/4″ crosswise fabric strips.
Fabric Shears to cut along top curved lines.
Place one Cream Rose fan wedge to one Red Rose fan wedge, right sides together. Pin.
Set sewing machine for a scant 1/4″ seam, and stitch side seam on right only.
Press seam allowance flat, then press open.
Repeat steps above and create two fan appliques with the Cream Rose fan wedge located at left.
Repeat steps above, stitching side seam on left only, and create two fan appliques with the Red Rose fan wedge located at left.
Layer one fan unit to one 8-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ background fabric square, matching cut edge. Pin.
Baste along lower edge and side left edge – stitching within the scant 1/4″ seam allowance.
Create Fusible Bias Tape
Following directions included with Clover’s 3/8″ Fusible Bias Tape Maker , feed bias cut fabric strip into the tape maker and feed Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape into top channel.
Press the folded bias strip, as it exits the narrow end of the maker – the fabric edges are magically folded toward center.
Finish the Blocks
Remove paper backing from fusible bias, and position bias tape over the curved fan edges.
Using an iron, press the fusible bias tape in place – to conceal the cut edges of the fan appliqué.
Using a Size 75 Schmetz Quilting Needle, edgestitch along edge of the bias tape with Monofilament Thread.
It’s always easier to stitch smooth curves with a shorter stitch length – such as a 2.0 mm setting.
Repeat steps above and and cover the remaining fan appliqué cut edge.
Repeat steps above and create four April Fan Blocks: Two Blocks with Cream Rose fan wedge located to left. And Two Blocks with Red Rose fan wedge located to left.
The Nancy’s Red Elegance April Fan Blocks are complete!

Stitching a Sewing Community Together on The Best of Sewing With Nancy
One of our favorite Sewing With Nancy memories is when the Nancy Zieman team “took the show on the road”, and recorded at the 2014 Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, Washington –near Seattle, WA– where over 30,000 sewing enthusiasts gather to share, learn, and enjoy their love of sewing! Our friends at Washington State University State Extension, along with many talented volunteer Clothing & Textile Advisors (CTAs), host the annual Sewing & Stitchery Expo.
To help celebrate the 30th anniversary of this mega sewing event, the Sewing With Nancy crew packed up their camera equipment – and for the first time ever – we took Sewing With Nancy On The Road to capture the unique camaraderie between sewing pattern designers, teachers, vendors, and event attendees.
Stitching a Sewing Community Together is this week’s Sewing With Nancy online video feature and here’s a preview of the exciting events Nancy and team captured on location:
Learn Tips from a Pattern Designer
The episode begins with Nancy’s interview with renowned sewing author, designer, and educator, Pati Palmer of Palmer/Pletsch Associates. Pati shares the process of designing patterns—she specializes in presenting ideas from a sewers point of view.
See the Sewing World from a Pattern Company’s Perspective
Kathy Marrone, editor of Vogue Pattern magazine and also representing The McCall Pattern Company, presents a unique point of view of what a pattern company learns from attending a sewing event. Her insight might surprise you! (Notice the thumbs-up sign from Ben, our director. It was a good “take!” Great job, Nancy!)
Ever Wonder about the Fabric Designing Process?
Tula Pink, graphic artist turned extraordinary fabric designer and quilt designer, shares how inspirations turn into fabric.
Learning—That’s What Sewing Expos are All About
We know you’ll enjoy Nancy’s interview with Candice Jewett, from Quality Sew & Vac in WA, an amazing serging instructor.
Just How Did this Expo Begin?
Nancy sits down for an interview with Joanne Ross, Show Founder & Director, and reminisces about the past while looking forward to the future.
Style Show Anyone?
Mary Collen, style show manager for the Sewing & Stitchery Expo, shares behind-the-scene activities of orchestrating approximately 14 free style shows during the 4-day event. (There’s Inga-sound tech on the left, Mike-videographer in the center, on the far right is Richard Zieman-crowd control
and you don’t see Deanna Springer-because she’s always taking the behind the scenes photos – that you see here in the NZP Blog).
Meet and Greet
One of Nancy’s favorite things to do at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo was to present her sewing seminars and meet other sewing enthusiasts. After each of Nancy’s seminars, an enthusiastic group would gather for some one-on-one time with Nancy.
On the day we packed up our gear and headed for airport, the mountain graced the sky. In the lower right corner of the photo Deanna snapped, you can see Mount Rainier. Nancy always shared with us that she attended the show for 10 years before she ever saw the majestic mountain, and she was starting to think that the much talked about mountain was photoshopped into pictures!

Pattern Fitting Tutorial for McCall’s Tunic & Dress Pattern M8022
Use Nancy’s Right•Size Measurement Fitting Chart to determine your pattern size to cut out.
Find your Right•Size Front Width Measurement by measuring straight across the front chest, between the creases in your skin–where your arm meets your body.
Use Nancy’s Personal Fitting Chart to record your body measurements and plan your pattern alterations.
Take a small amount of time and follow Nancy’s step-by-step body measuring and fitting techniques for a pattern that is “fit to be tried.”
In our NEW! Stitch it! Sisters Program 113, Tunic Pattern Fitting – The Nancy Zieman Way Video, we share Nancy’s tried and true pivot and slide pattern fitting techniques for fitting our NEW! McCall’s Tunic & Dress Pattern, M8022.
Our NEW! McCall’s Tunic & Dress Pattern, M8022 features princess seams–for a flattering fit for all sizes, along with an optional hidden front pocket between the side front seams! Because our NEW! McCall’s Tunic & Dress Pattern, M8022 features princess seams–you’ll divide your needed increases (above) by eight, as we’ll have eight seams to when we’re later sewing our princess-style tunic.
When the pocket pattern piece is stacked onto the center front pattern piece–you’ll see this pocket is located perfectly between the side front seams!
In our NEW! Stitch it! Sisters Program 113, Tunic Pattern Fitting – The Nancy Zieman Way Video , we show step-by-step how to increase the bust line, waistline and hip line with Nancy’s easy pivot and slide pattern fitting techniques. Using Pattern Making Paper trace original center front pattern piece with a black marker. Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge , measure and mark desired pattern increase amounts with a red marker.
Place a pin at the stitching line where the shoulder and armhole intersect. “Pivot” the pattern to the desired bust line increase amount, and trace the outline of the original pattern edge.
Keeping the pattern pivoted, move the pin to the stitching line where the armhole and side front seam intersect, pivot the pattern to meet the desired waistline increase, and trace the outline of the original pattern edge.
Keeping the pattern pivoted, move the pin to the stitching line at the waistline, pivot the pattern to meet the desired hip line increase, and trace the outline of the original pattern edge.
Keeping the pattern pivoted, move the pin to the stitching line at the hip line, pivot the pattern to meet the hem, and trace the outline of the original pattern edge to the lower hem.
Repeat pivoting steps on the pattern side front, center back, and side back pattern pieces.
Optional: Repeat pivoting steps on the sleeve pattern, if needed.
The pattern is increased in the bust line, waistline, and hip line–all while maintaining the original seams! The original cowl and sleeve pattern pieces will stitch together with the altered Right•Size pattern pieces!
Prepare the center pocket pattern piece: Using Sewer’s Fix It Tape , tape a rectangle of Pattern Making Paper to the pocket pattern piece.
Stack the pocket pattern onto the altered center front pattern piece, matching circles, and trace the Right•Size red marked lines onto the Pattern Making Paper of the pocket pattern piece.
Transfer circle placement markings onto the Pattern Making Paper of the pocket pattern piece.
All Right•Size pattern marked lines–in red–are the new pattern cutting lines.

The Absolute Easiest Way to Sew Part Three on The Best of Sewing With Nancy
Sew it simple. Sew to have fun. How? It’s straightforward after you learn Nancy Zieman’s Absolute Easiest Way to Sew! This time, Nancy shares how to insert an invisible zipper. To seamlessly—pun intended—insert an invisible zipper into the seam use this modified approach, attaching the facing before sewing the zipper. It’s a new approach and one of Nancy’s absolute easiest sewing tips.
How to Insert an Invisible Zipper into a Top, Tunic, or Dress
Stitch the shoulder seams.
Fuse Pellon Sof-Shape Interfacing to the wrong sides of front and back neckline facing fabrics.
Stitch facing shoulder seams.
Do not stitch the center back seam, at this point.
Align facing to garment, right sides together, matching notches. Pin.
Stitch facing to neckline.
Grade seam allowances, using a 45 mm Rotary Cutter and Pinking Blade – for the fastest and easiest results.
Press seam allowances toward facing.
Understitch, stitching seam allowances to the facing. Use a multi-zigzag stitch!
Flatten out the zipper tape, pressing zipper teeth to the outside.
Place a piece of Sewers Fix It Tape above the zipper stop – on the front side of the upper left zipper.
With a Pen Style Chaco Liner, and 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge , mark the 5/8″ seam allowances along both sides of the center back seam. Begin marking at neckline seam, and continue marking the length of the zipper opening.
Align one side of the zipper tape to the corresponding side of the garment, right sided together, meeting zipper teeth to the 5/8″ marked line and placing top zipper teeth slightly below the neckline seam.
Pin just this one side of the zipper – to the fabric.
Attach an invisible Zipper Foot to sewing machine. Starting at neckline seam, position presser foot on top of zipper tape. Position needle to stitch on the zipper tape – just to the right of the zipper teeth.
After stitching, close the zipper and check that the zipper stop is directly below the neckline seam.
Align the second half of the zipper at the top of the neckline, right sides together, placing the remaining side of the zipper to the remaining garment edge – at the same distance from the top of the neckline.
Align zipper teeth to the marked line. Pin. Stitch.
After stitching close the zipper, close zipper and check that both neckline seams align.
Fold facing over zipper tape; hand stitch with Need le and thread.
Pin lower portion of seam from the bottom of zipper to lower hem.
Move invisible zipper foot completely to the left of the needle. Stitch seam from the lower zipper stopping point – to the lower garment hem.
Ta dah!

Nancy Zieman’s Absolute Easiest Way to Hem Anything
If you’re stitching, there’s a good chance your project will have a hem. Nearly everything we sew has a hem—skirts, pants, sleeves, and home décor items such as curtains and table linens. Using Nancy Zieman’s Absolute easiest Way to Hem, turn hemming into a simple sewing task.
Find Nancy’s hemming tips and more in her Sewing With Nancy three-part series on The Absolute Easiest Way to Sew (Part One, Part Two, and Part Three).
Preparing the Hem
1. Fold up the hem.
Prepress the hem on each flat pattern/garment piece before stitching it to another piece. This is one of Nancy’s great time-saving techniques.
Use Clover’s Hot Ruler to provide an accurate measurement and to avoid leaving a hem impression on the right side of the fabric. Place the Hot ruler on the wrong side of the fabric.
Fold up the hem allowances over the gauge to the desired width and press.
2. Grade seam allowances within the hem area to reduce bulk.
