NEW! One-Seam Skirt Sewing Tutorial
Sew our NEW! One-Seam Skirt from just one yard of knit fabric and a yard or so of 3″ elastic. Our skirt has no elastic casing and is so fast to make – you’ll be sewing this summer wardrobe staple – in 2 hours or less!
Gather Supplies
One Yard Crepe Knit Fabric
One or more yards Wide Knit Elastic 2″ shorter that waist measurement.
Cut Crepe Knit skirt rectangle 36″ long, by the width waist measurement plus 6″.
Before cutting skirt rectangle, wrap greatest stretch of fabric rectangle around waist and test-fit through hips. Mark rectangle skirt width with pins, and allow 1/2″ extra for seam allowance. Using pins, quarter-mark elastic and skirt fabric.
Place elastic to skirt top, right sides together, aligning edges and matching quarter-markings. Pin.
Stretch elastic and secure with additional pins. Place pins parallel to cut edge–if you’ll be stitching with a serger.
Serge or stitch elastic to skirt with 1/4″ seam allowance, or use the width of the presser foot. Stretch elastic as you sew.
Place skirt right sides together and pin along side seam.
Using 1/4″ seam allowance, stitch side seam with sewing machine or serger.
Insert stitched serger thread tail into eye of darning needle. Insert needle into stitched seam, threading tail back through stitched seam.
Add a drop of Fray Block , and cut away excess thread tail.
For exposed elastic at waist, skip the next step and move on to hemming.
For hidden elastic at waist, fold elastic inside skirt with wrong sides together. Pin at side seam and at halfway marking (where a second side seam would usually be positioned).
Topstitch along side seam, and halfway mark, securing elastic inside skirt.
Shorten skirt if desired. Fold up 1″ along lower skirt and hem with hem stitch, wobble stitch, or double needle stitching.
Our NEW! One-Seam Skirt is fun to sew – and fast to make! Sew this new summer wardrobe addition – in 2 hours or less!

Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares Part Three on The Best of Sewing With Nancy
Incorporating specialty fabrics can add functionality when sewing gifts and projects. For example, try clear vinyl. This unique fabric is the star of the Sewing With Nancy program, Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares—the third episode. Watch online. Here’s a preview of the projects that you’ll see Nancy Zieman demonstrate during the show.
Jewelry Caddies
Nancy begins this episode with a Jewelry Caddy duo, which fits all of the standards set for this show. The caddies use two sizes of fabric rectangles, specialty fabric (clear vinyl with a ribbon accent trim), and all the sewing is done with straight stitches. Best of all, the projects are attractive and very practical!
Portable Ironing Blanket
Use the same dimensions as the jewelry caddies plus Quilted Iron Quick fabric to make a portable mini-ironing blanket. Use it next to your sewing machine for quick presses. Or, create a larger ironing blanket, any size of your choice, with the same transportability. It could easily be used as an ironing board substitute or for travel. Either way, you can custom-make these projects easily with Nancy’s sew simple techniques.
Closet Organizer
How about adding extra storage to your home without assembling knock-down furniture or remodeling a closet? Create portable, compact closet organizers with double-sided quilted fabric, clear vinyl, and ribbon trim. It’s another straight-stitched project that can hang in full sight or hidden behind a closet door.

Today watch Nancy Zieman’s 5-minute Nancy’s Corner Interview on Sewing With Nancy with guest Laura Nigbur who makes Cage Comforters (padded blankets) for her local animal shelter. Cut Fabric for the Blocks
Create FOUR super-simple circle block with just two easy fabric squares and one square of Pellon Sof-Shape!
Cut four 8-1/2″ background square of Red Elegance Wallpaper Cream.
Cut four 7″ square of Red Elegance Main Brick – for the center circle.
Cut four 7″ square Pellon Sof-Shape Fusible Interfacing
For this May block of the m0nth in the NEW! 2020 Nancy Zieman Productions Nancy’s Red Elegance Block of the Month Mystery Quilt Series, we’re sharing Nancy Zieman’s techniques for creating perfect circles – without ever cutting a circle!
Construct the Blocks
Create the Center Circle Appliqué
Place a 7″ background square of Red Elegance Main Brick to one 7″ square Pellon Sof-Shape Fusible Interfacing – matching smooth side of the fusible interfacing to right side of fabric. Pin.
Position Circle Template on the interfacing , centering the template on the interfacing square.
With a fabric marking pen and Circle Template, trace a 6″ circle on the onto the interfacing – tracing along the yellow lines at the die cut openings.
Stitch directly on the marked line using a slightly shorter stitch length.
It’s always easier to stitch smooth curves with a shorter stitch length, such as a 2.0 mm setting.
With a 45mm Rotary Cutting and Pinking Blade , trim away excess fabric, leaving about a 1/4″ seam allowance on the outside of stitching line.
Carefully cut away the center of the interfacing, leaving about 1″ of interfacing at the inside of stitching line.
Save interfacing scraps for a later project when making, perhaps, smaller circles
Use Clover’s Point 2 Point Turner, and smooth the curved edge as the interfacing is turned to the wrong side.
Press.
Topstitch Appliqué to Block Background
Fold one background square in half, then in quarters to determine the center, use a Roll ‘n Press, or ‘finger press’ along the folded edges.
Open.
Fold the center circle applique in half, then in quarters to determine the center, use a Roll ‘n Press, or ‘finger press’ along the folded edges. Open.
Layer the circle applique onto the background square aligning fold lines. Pin.
Thread sewing machine with monofilament thread in the top thread of sewing machine, and regular all-purpose sewing thread in the bobbin.
Use a narrow blind hem stitch, blanket stitch, zigzag stitch, or straight stitch to “machine appliqué” the circle to the background.
Press.
Repeat steps above and make FOUR May Circle Blocks!
The Nancy’s Red Elegance May Circle Blocks are complete! NOTE: Stitch FOUR May Circle Blocks .

Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares Part Two on The Best of Sewing With Nancy
From gift giving to personal sewing, Nancy Zieman found many projects could be stitched from the simplest shapes. We’ve already shared the first episode of the three-part series, Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares, on Sewing With Nancy. This blog posting focuses on part two of the series, sharing useful, yet clever items such as: Hold-it Sacks, Mini Fabric Sacks, Fabric Bins, and Wall Pockets. With 12 complete projects in all, you won’t want to miss this collection.
Hold-it Sacks
The Hold-it Sacks are Nancy’s first sew-simple projects in this episode. Prop up your cell phone or electronic tablet in the cradle area of a Hold-it Sack. Made from laminated fabric, they’re ideal to use throughout your home or office. The unique finished shapes appear as if they were made from complicated patterns, but not these gadget holders. They’re all made from rectangular shapes.
Mini Fabric Sacks
Toss them in a game or use them to hold down pattern pieces, these Mini Fabric Sacks can be both fun and functional. You can easily make three mini sacks in an hour or less.
Fabric Bins
Don’t settle for tan or black bins for your shelf, customize fabric bins to accent your home décor by selecting coordinating fabrics. Make from, you guessed it, rectangle and square fabric pieces. The sewing is enjoyable and the end result is as fresh in appearance as it is useful. Grommets serve as both handles and a focal point.
Wall Pockets
What’s good for the shelf is good for the wall! With a little tweaking of the instructions, fabric bins turn into wall pockets that provide organization and style to any home or work office.

Sew to Give Spotlight! Today watch Nancy Zieman’s 5-minute Nancy’s Corner Interview on Sewing With Nancy with guest Henry Drewal. Henry shares stories of African communities in India that are poor, but they’re rich with artistic traditions. Learn how Siddi Women’s Quilting Co-op of India makes handmade quilts to sell to help support their families. The artists begin quilting in a corner and sew around the quilt until they reach the center, then a unique motif is stitched. Quilts are then brought to the United States to sell.
