The Rain and the Curbstomp

You know, back in 2011 I said that it would be pretty cool to win the Hugo Award.

Ah, to be that naive and young again.

Hell, back in 2013 I still thought it would be fun. “Fun” being relative, but you know.

Now? Now I’m just happy that I’m a Campbell finalist (which is not directly related to the Hugos, unlike what I believed back in 2011 when I first entered this world of “publishing”). After watching the utter meltdown on the Internet the past few weeks, it’s terrifying to see people and h...

Lazy Day

Today is definitely a lazy day.

Birds are singing outside, Casperis lounging in the window and hogging the sun (and Wally is getting mad at him for doing so). I’m going to do some reading and, if I get properly motivated, I might mow the lawn later.

I enjoy Sundays. It’s pretty much the only day that seems to have the universal “siesta” feel to it.

Haven’t written much over the past few days. Working 10 hour shifts are rough on the creative mind. When you’re finally done, you don’t want to en...

A Review and an Update

I reviewed David Walton’sSuperpositiontoday over at Shiny Book Review. It was a fun little read and really delves into quantum entanglement and resonance (which, for me, is pretty awesome stuff… I should have gone in to physics but I hated math when I was younger. Or my first love, biology). There is a sequel coming out in Septermber calledSupersymmetry. I can only guess how the author’s going to top this last novel, though. Both, by the way, are from Pyr Books (a publisher I’ve had my eye on...

The Hit Piece That Released the Kraken

You know, I thought I’d done a pretty good job at keeping my mouth shut the past few days since the Hugo Awards kerfuffle began. Not because I’m worried about the vote or future book deals or anything, but because I was basking in the sheer AWESOMENESS of being a finalist. For me, I’d been pretty quiet on everything thus far.

Until today, when I read the most libelous piece of inappropriate journalism I’d seen since Stephen Glass.

This… article (for lack of an appropriate word) was written by...

Campbell Award and the Hugos

So it is now official: I’m a John W. Campbell Award finalist (Best New Author).

I’ve known for about 2 weeks or so now and it’s been very, very hard to stay quiet about it. I was thrilled and shocked to get the email. I figured I have a very small chance at making the ballot, but not a huge one due to how many amazing new authors are out there right now. Quite frankly, I figured next year might be my year to make the ballot.

Joining me on the ballot are Wesley Chu (I’m a huge fan, btw), Kary...

It’s Complicated

warpcordova:

I blogged today over at the Mad Genius Club and talked about Books versus Movies. Why that and not the Hugos? Well, two reasons.

One: everyone is talking about the Hugos.

Two: I wanted to talk about Books versus Movies.

See? That is how it’s done. No fuss, just going out and doing something. Anyway, go take a look.

Floating Deadlines

So the editor told me yesterday “The deadline was more of a floating deadline, so don’t worry about it.” Yay! I have a few more days to knock out this still-untitled Zombie short story.

My frequent coauthor, Eric S. Brown, sent me a short story the other day for the 1632 universe (by Eric Flint). It’s a continuation of his piece which was published in the Grantville Gazette a few months back. He asked me to coauthor this new story with him, which I’m excited about. I haven’t played in the 163...

The Obligatory Updated Part Deux

Writing Music of the Moment: “Generation Dead”byFive Finger Death Punch

Talk about a crazy two weeks. I’ve been so busy running around and dealing with this new job that I’ve forgotten to update the website.

Plus side of new job: more income! Yay!

Down side of new job: not nearly as much writing time. Boo!

One of the things I’ve always envied some writers is their ability to juggle real life and their fictional creations. Larry Correia is a fine example of a man who is a great parent, support...

Monday Crash

So last night my friends over at eLevate Gaming (the WGLNA – World Gaming League North America, which is the Gold (Professional) League for World of Tanks) won the North American championships, upsetting the #1 ranked team in the process. They were pretty damn awesome and it was fun hanging out and supporting the crap out of them over on Twitch. They’re headed to Poland in April to represent North America in the world championships. Also, as a bonus result, I won a free gaming RIG headset fro...

Terry Pratchett and other, less important stuff.

So I have a confession to make: I’ve never read a Terry Pratchett novel.

It’s not like I went out of my way to avoid them, it just nobody ever really pushed me and said “Jason, youreallyneed to read this book” like they’ve done with other authors (John Steakley is one who comes to mind). So I never felt compelled to pick up a Pratchett novel. It was just one of those “things”, you know?

So when I heard that Sir Terry Pratchett died yesterday, I felt bad for his family, friends and fans. There...
