Torpedo Away

So this weekendOperation Supply Drop is going to be running another 36 hour charity drive on Twitch(this is the link we used last time; be aware that it could be different and I won’t know until Friday)called Warships: Torpedoes for the Troops, which is a play on our last charity drive,Tanking for the Troops. Last time we managed to raise over $3000 for OSD, and we hope to beat that this time. It’ll be running from Friday at 3pm Eastern (noon Pacific) until Sunday 3am Eastern (midnight Pacifi...

Foreword

I got asked to write the foreword for an upcoming anthology yesterday, which I immediately said “Yes” to without reservation or any hesitation. Why, you ask? Because the person asking me was John Manning’s widow, DeAnna Manning.

John was my favorite editor to work with and I was extremely saddened when he died of cancer earlier this year. I would have liked to hear from him when the John W. Campbell Award finalists list came out. He would have been thrilled to hear that one of “his” authors m...

Back On Track

I made a comment the other day about how you need to write every day if you want to keep at it. I was thinking about it again yesterday after talking with Barb and I realized that in 2015 I’ve become extremely lazy in my writing habits.

I’m relying on too many bursts of inspiration and not as much “nose to the grindstone” like I did in the past. I had 9 pieces of fiction published last year, all while keeping my nose down and just pushing through the distractions. This year, with only 3, I’m...

…aaaaaand I’m back!

I really wanted to post live the Hugo Awards Saturday night but I’d been locked out of my website until today due to me changing computers and not saving passwords or two-step verification tables (I remember my passwords, but when you have 25 different ones, remembering which goes where can be troublesome). Thankfully, the people at WordPress saw my tweet and decided to help a brother out.

For future reference, may I recommend getting yourself some kind of password keeper on your machine? It...

Monday Brief

I haven’t forgotten you, really. I’ve just had my nose to the grindstone the past few weeks finishing upKraken Mare, as well as preparing an outline for a new project for my publisher (tentatively calledThe Weird and Wild West).

Hugo voting is closed. Thanks to all of you who voted (for me or for someone else, doesn’t matter — a vote is a vote). Here’s to hoping that nobody used the “No Award” option to nuke anyone out of spite. I know both sides of the argument have threatened to do this, bu...

Such Is Life

Some of the things I look most forward to end up disappointing me the most. I think it’s because I get my expectations up so high that when it finally does occur, it cannot meet the impossible expectation I have for it.

Such is life, I suppose.

I’ve been battling this knee injury for 7 weeks now, but the end is in sight. The MRI is scheduled for Friday, and it’ll probably be determined shortly after whether I need surgery or not. Since the growing consensus from medical experts and people who...

Libertycon 28 AAR

So Libertycon 28 was a blast this year. I was in pain (unsurprising, given the state of my knee) but thanks to the wonders of modern medicine and my train car being at the center of everything I managed to survive.

We arrived at the Choo Choo around five in the afternoon and I immediately ran into Sharon Rice-Weber, wife of NYT bestselling author David Weber. I hadn’t see Sharon since Honorcon last year and it was fun catching up with her. While doing this (in the middle of a parking lot, on...

Dear Book

DearCorruptor,

it’s been ten years since I first wrote you. Can you believe it? You didn’t take long to write (4 months for 117,000 words) and you simply flowed into being. You had your strengths and your weaknesses, but they were what made you amazing. I look back on you now and think “I should have done this” but believe me when I say that, despite how I ignore you these days in favor of books with fantastical monsters (instead of real-life monsters), your series will be finished and I’m im...

Eric Flint and the Sad Puppy

Eric Flint dives into the Sad Puppy debatewith both feet (again). While I disagree with half of what he says (okay, 3/5ths of it I disagree with), he does make quite a few good points. He makesthe mistake of a “separate but equal” award argument but at this point it’s probably not a horrible idea, given the vitriol that has been lobbed at both sides during this fight (and it is a fight, don’t let anyone try to tell you differently). Hell, the Prometheus Award is already out there (an award wh...

Story Release and Update for Libertycon

I have a new short story out right now.

Eric S. Brown and I sold a short story to Eric Flint’sGrantville Gazette, part of his1632 series. The story is calledChosen of the Red Godand is currently available on their site for free. This is a continuation of the story of a Native American in 1635 who finds a comic ofThe Flash and endeavors to be as fast as he is that Eric sold earlier this year. A fun story to be sure.

Kicked butt onKraken Marelast week, quadrupling the word count I had on the bo...
