Rabiulawal 20, 1443: Rebutlah 'emas' sebagai warga emas...
Dengan Nama Allah Yang Maha Pemurah Lagi Maha Penyayang, selawat dan salam ke atas junjungan besar Nabi Muhammad s.a.w.
Renungan
"Maafkanlah dan suruhlah (mengerjakan) yang makruf dan berpalinglah daripada orang-orang yang jahil." - Q.S. Al-A'raf: 199)
BEBERAPA tahun selepas bersara, saya cuba-cubalah membeli tiket pengangkutan awam khas bagi warga emas, manalah tahu dapat diskaun lumayan, namun hampa.
Di sebuah stesen kereta api, gadis kaunter tiket memberitahu saya; "Pak cik, potongan harga hanya untuk mereka berumur 60 tahun ke atas!"
Sebal muka tetapi tidaklah saya menyalahkan diri sendiri kerana saya fikir asalkan seseorang itu sudah bersara, dia boleh dapat tiket potongan harga pelbagai perkhidmatan seperti pengangkutan awam.
Alhamdulillah, dalam sebulan dua lagi saya akan menginjak ke usia warga emas (60 tahun) dan selepas itu 60+ insya-Allah. Benar saya akan mendapat potongan harga spesial bagi warga emas bagi tiket pengangkutan awam dan sebagainya...tetapi persoalannya apakah itu keutamaan seseorang warga emas?
Subhanallah apakah mana usia warga emas ini? Portal Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM) mentakrifkan warga emas sebagai mereka yang berumur 60 tahun ke atas. Ini berpandukan kepada takrifan yang dibuat di 'World Assembly On Ageing 1982' di Vienna.
Turut dipaparkan adalah perkidmatan disediakan jabatan berkenaan untuk golongan ini seperti Bantuan Kewangan, Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE) dan Unit Penyayang Warga Emas (UPWE)
Sekalipun seseorang pada usia 60 tahun dilihat sesetengah pihak 'sudah senja', ada cadangan oleh JKM agar perubahan definisi umur warga emas ditukar kepada 65 tahun. Ini selari dengan usaha pihak tertentu yang mahu menaikkan umur persaraan wajib daripada 60 tahun kepada 62 sehingga 65 tahun.
Tidak kiralah berapa usia persaraan seseorang, masa depannya selalu dilihat dari segi kekukuhan kewangan....ya benarkah begitu?
Azizi Ali dalam bukunya 'Pesara Jutawan' (Truewealth) mencatatkan: "Persaraan selalu dipotretkan sebagai alam syurga seperti yang dipopularkan oleh media massa Barat. Diibaratkan sebagai sebagai suatu masa apabila orang tua boleh memungut hasil titik peluh mereka, boleh melakukan apa yang mereka suka dan menikmati zaman keemasan mereka. Ini adalah benar - tetapi bukan cerita sepenuhnya."
Apabila melangkah ke usia 'six series', kita semakin hampir ke gerbang kematian. Seorang cendekiawan mencatatkan: "Kita hidup di dunia, tak lama. Rasulullah s.a.w. telah bersabda yang bermaksud: 'Umur umatku antara 60 hingga 70 tahun, dan sedikit orang yang melampui umur tersebut' (HR. Ibnu Majah: 4236, Syaikh Al Albani mengatakan: hasan shahih).
Dalam waktu yang sebentar itu, kita memerlukan bekal yang banyak untuk mengharunginya. Bahkan kadang kita harus banting tulang demi mencari bekal untuk kehidupan ini.
Jika untuk waktu +-70 tahun saja kita harus banting tulang untuk mencari bekalnya, lalu sudahkah kita banting tulang untuk kehidupan alam barzakh yang mungkin sampai ribuan tahun?
Seorang ustaz dalam ceramahnya yang saya hadiri berkata: "Kebanyakan kita (jemaah masjid) sudah masuk usia warga emas...rebutlah 'emas' (termasuk masa) yang tersisa untuk bekalan ke sana!"
Penulis pernah mencatatkan selepas bersara, kurangilah beban duniamu berdasarkan kata-kata hikmah seorang ahli sufi: "Semakin meningkat usia kita (terutama yang sudah memasuki usia tua, mulai 60 tahun) kurangkan beban memburu dunia sebaliknya meningkatkan amalan untuk ke alam sana.”
Seorang ahli pondok mengungkapkan: “Walau banyak mana pun harta yang kamu kumpulkan di muka bumi ini, suatu hari nanti akan musnah jua hartamu itu hinggalah kamu masuk ke perut bumi. Sebagaimana kamu bermegah melakukan maksiat di muka bumi ini, maka suatu hari nanti kamu tetap akan diazab dalam perut bumi.
“Walau bagaimanpun kamu berlagak dan bertakabur di atas muka bumi ini, suatu hari nanti kamu tetap akan dihina dalam perut bumi. Sebagaimana kamu bermegah dengan memakan dan minum minuman haram, suatu hari nanti tubuhmu tetap akan menjadi makanan ulat.”
Ya, sesungguhnya jarak masa kehidupan sekarang ini (berada di atas bumi) dengan berada di bawahnya (memasuki kubur) tersangat dekat, tetapi kebanyakan orang tidak mempedulikannya, mereka dibuai kelekaan untuk memperbanyak habuan dunia seperti harta benda, pangkat dan kuasa. Dalam mengejar impian ini, mereka tidak peduli sama ada perlu memijak kawan dan juga lawan malah sehingga sanggup menikam kawan dari belakang termasuklah melakukan fitnah. Hal inilah berleluasa sekarang.
Seorang bijak pandai pula mengandaikan perjalanan kehidupan ini bagaikan kembara ke puncak gunung. Di kaki gunung (sebelum memulakan pendakian), tentulah beban kita banyak (misalnya makanan, minuman dan pelbagai peralatan) tetapi semakin tinggi dakian kita, bebanan semakin berkurangan kerana sebahagian makanan sudah dihabiskan sehinggalah sampai ke puncak gunung beban dipikul hampir habis; tetapi hal sebaliknya berlaku kepada sebahagian besar manusia.
Selain memikul bebanan yang berat, mereka mengutip sisa-sisa di sepanjang laluan menjadikan perjalanan mereka semakin lama semakin sukar. Mereka sendiri menggalas beban yang tidak diperlukan malah ada yang memikul peti sejuk untuk ke puncak gunung yang bersalji. Cuba kita teliti kehidupan kita, apakah kita sudah rasa memadai dengan apa yang kita ada? Malah ada hadis yang menyebut jika kita ada dua buah lembah emas, kita rasa itu tidak memadai, kita mahu lembah ketiga dan seterusnya.
Demikianlah perjalanan kehidupan yang meletihkan. Peluang hidup disia-siakan, dihabiskan semata-mata bagi mengumpul harta, dinar dan emas perak yang semuanya tidak laku apabila sampai di puncak gunung nanti (matilah).
Apabila emas, perak, pangkat dan kuasa menjadi buruan, berleluasalah gejala sosial yang maha hebat sekarang ini. Masyarakat sudah teruk, bahana keruntuhan institusi keluarga sudah dirasai dengan meningkatnya kes bunuh, bunuh diri, penderaan, zina, pembuangan bayi dan aneka maksiat lain.
Itulah, 'kawan fikir' saya pada majlis tasawuf berkenaan berkata, semakin meningkatnya usia kita yang menghampiri kematian, kurangkanlah sedikit demi sedikit kelazatan dunia sebaliknya tingkatkan amalan ke alam sana sehingga apabila hampir ‘yakin’ (mati), dunia dapat kita tinggalkan dengan reda dengan keberuntungan akhirat seolah-olah sudah memanggil-manggil kita!

Rabiulawal 13, 1443: Masuk syurga seorang-seorang? (Going to Heaven alone?)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful; blessings and peace be upon Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.
Reflection
O ye who believe! Retalation is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered; the freeman for the freeman, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. And for him who is forgiven somewhat by his (injured) brother, prosecution according to usage and payment unto him in kindness. This is an alleviation and a mercy from your Lord. He who transgresseth after this will have a painfull doom. (Al-Baqarah, 178)
DURING ‘Maulidur Rasul’ (Prophet Muhammad's s.a.w. birthday), I attended several lectures on the subject, a talk by one preacher, Ustaz Long Kechik moved my heart and I would like to share it with readers.
His talk and presentation with aid of a power point illustration was simple; it revolved on why we were sent into this world and where we are heading for. On why we were sent into this world, he quoted Surat Adh-Dhariyat 51:56 (The Winnowing Winds) with the meaning; “I have only created jinn and men, that they may serve Me.”
Yes, human being existence along with jinn are to worship Allah SWT, but Ustaz Long explained in this ‘ayah’, Allah SWT used the word ‘men or mankind’ and not Muslim, so the duty of Muslims is not confined only to worship Allah SWT, it is more than that.
So what are other duties of Muslims? To explain this, Ustaz Long discussed at length about Allah SWT's mercy in sending His prophets.
Allah SWT, out of His abundant Love and Mercy for mankind, has not left us in darkness to discover the right path by trial and error alone. Coupled with our intellectual capability to reason, Allah SWT bestowed upon us divine guidance that outlines the Criterion for truth and the knowledge and reality of our existence in this world and Hereafter.
From the beginning of mankind Allah SWT sent exemplars or prophets to convey His revelation and to invite all mankind to the path of true peace and obedience to one true God. This is Islam.
This message was conveyed to all nations and tribes in this world throughout successive generations through more than 124,000 prophets – all inviting mankind to the same path.
Ustaz Long said prophets before Muhammad s.a.w. were sent to their own people or tribe. Their followers were not given the duty to preach the religion and when the prophets died, they were replaced by other prophets.
But Prophet Muhammad being the ‘khatamah’ (final) Messenger of Allah; was not only sent for his own tribe (Quraisy and Arab) but for all mankind and even jinn at every corner of the planet and his teaching would valid until ‘kiamah’ (the end of the world).
“If Prophets before Muhammad s.a.w. died; their teachings would be upheld by their followers and when they swayed from the true religion, Allah SWT would send another prophet, but what would be the case of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.’s followers?” asked Ustaz Long.
He said, after Prophet Muhammad's demise; the duty to preach and uphold the religion falls on the shoulder of every Muslim. This is what the Prophet s.a.w. used to tell his Companions to do: “Convey (knowledge) from me if it is just one ‘ayah’.” (al-Bukhari)
In another hadith, the Prophet s.a.w. said: “Whoever calls people to the truth will have a reward like that of those who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their reward.” (Sahih Muslim)
Based on this fact, Ustaz Long stressed that the duty of every Muslim (the followers of Muhammad) is to worship (serve) Allah SWT (as mentioned in Surat Adh-Dhariyat 51:56 “I have only created jinn and men, that they may serve Me”) and to do the ‘dakwah’ (be a ‘daie’ – preacher).
‘Umat’ (the followers of) Muhammad was in front and have special place in the eyes of Allah SWT compared to other Prophets’ followers because among others they were given the task to spread the message of the Final Prophet s.a.w.
“So do we carry out the two tasks given to us as the followers of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.?” asked Ustaz Long. “True some of us devote ourselves to worship Allah SWT and to refine it such as doing the ‘tahajud’ (late night prayers) or ‘iktikaf’ (spending much time in masjids; praying, reading the Qur’an or thinking about God or oneself) but sadly, many of us distance ourselves from doing the ‘dakwah’ work.
“I would like to give you some simple examples. I know during ‘subuh’ (dawn) prayers many of you dashed off to the masjid with your bike. Sure, you devout yourself to your Lord but sad to say some of us do not bother on whether our wives of children say their prayers or not. To some extent; some of us were not bothered to wake up our children to say their prayers especially during their school holidays.
“Then how many of us are concerned about our wives and daughters attires; do they comply with the Islamic code of dressing? Then there are cases where the mother wears the hijab but the daughter puts on sexily clad dress.
“Why this situation is rampant in our Muslim homes? One factor is we do not do our ‘dakwah’ job. The father thinks that he should be a good Muslim but forget about his wife and children.
“He should ‘dakwah’ not only himself but his dependents for Allah SWT says: "Believers! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is Men and Stones, over which are angels stern (and) severe as wardens, who flinch not (from executing) the commands they receive from Allah, but do (precisely) what they are commanded." (Qur’an 66:6)
“After doing ‘dakwah’ to one’s family, have a look at our neighbourhood. Are our neighbours good practising Muslim or if they were of a different belief, have we shown them good aspects of Islam so they would be interested in the religion. Have we talked about Islam to them?
“Then we have to look at problems of our society, our state, country, and globally and lend our hands in solving them.
“The problem with Muslims nowadays is that we do not do the dakwah work, we only concentrate on own ‘ibadah’ (acts of devotion to Allah SWT) only as though we are going to Heaven alone. Remember a man would be stopped from entering Heaven by his wife or wives, daughters, sisters and mother if they insisted he had not done enough in guiding them to the straight path,” said Ustaz Long.
Sadly, nowadays dakwah seemed so strange, said the ustaz. Malays must not forget that they become Muslim from the hard work of dakwah of Arab, Indian and Chinese preachers who were mostly traders and they efforts were rewarded when rulers of Pasai/Perlak, Melaka, Aceh, Palembang, Patani and almost all entities in the Malay Archipelago accepted Islam beginning from the 10th century and reached its peak in the 15 and 16th century.
“If not because of the dedication of these traders and preachers, Malays would still be pagans, Nauzubillah,” said the ustaz.
Centuries ago, the Chinese such as Laksamana (Admiral) Cheng Ho had their part in preaching Islam to the people of Melaka and Palembang. Nowadays have the Muslim Malays done their jobs in explaining Islam to the Chinese community? The same should be asked on the dakwah work of the Malays to the Indians community.
So, based on the fact that dakwah seemed to be left out these days, Ustaz Long suggested it should be rekindled; insya-Allah (God willing) the ills of society would be able to be checked and more non-Muslim becoming interested in the religion and insya-Allah become Muslims themselves.

Rabiulawal 12, 1443: Simple things by the Prophet for us to emulate...(U)

Reflection
The Declining Day (Al-'Asr) 1. By the declining day, 2. Lo! Man is in a state of loss, 3. Save those who believe and do good works, and exhort one another to truth and exhort one another to endurance.
I had the opportunity to attend several ‘Maulidur Rasul tazkirah’ (talks or reminders in conjunction with Prophet Muhammad’s (s.a.w.) birthday. Some interesting points raised by speakers caught my attention and I would like to share them with readers especially regarding those small matters carried out by the Prophet which are easy for us to follow.
One ‘ustaz’ (a religious teacher) said it was no point in getting involved in ‘Maulidur Rasul’ processions while ignoring and going against Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) teachings, what more the simple ones. He said among those who were jubilant when the Prophet was born was Abu Lahab, but 40 years later when Prophet Muhammad revealed that he was the Messenger of God, this uncle of the Prophet started a war against him.
He said when Abu Lahab heard news that a baby boy was born to Aminah who was his brother’s (Abdullah) wife, he was full of joy that he circled the Ka’abah seven times (did tawaf) and proudly paraded in the holy city.
But when Muhammad (pbuh) became a Prophet, Abu Lahab dan his wife, worked continuously to make it hard for the Prophet; in the Qur’an, there is ‘Surah al-Tabat’ mentioning about Abu Lahab and his wife’s horrible fate in the Hereafter.
Another 'ustaz' said many of us did not know the life story of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. and his struggle, thus how could we fall in love with him? He said the love for the Prophet s.a.w. was very, very, very important because he is the only one among Allah SWT's creations (makhluk) who could render us help in our journey in the Hereafter beginning with our lives in our graves (barzakh).
The 'ustaz' said, once inside our graves, the angels, Munkar and Nakir, would pose questions such as who is your Lord and who is your Prophet? What do you know about this man (Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.)? Based on this, the 'ustaz' said, Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. would be beside us in our graves; but if in our lives we were ignorant of him and his teachings, then it would be difficult for us to have his 'syafaat' (blessings).
One way to get to know the Prophet s.a.w. is by following his 'sunnah' (way of life). Some 'sunnah' are so simple yet because of our ignorance, we just look it down or push it aside.
From the several talks of Maulidur Rasul that I had attended, here is a compilation on the simple matters carried out by the Prophet as told by the 'ustazs' for us to follow. It is because of our love for him that we do our best to emulate his ways. Please do away with our ego and shyness in following the Prophet’s s.a.w. way of life
On family matters
One 'ustaz' said the Prophet s.a.w. was very loving towards his family, including to his wives. This 'ustaz' said one of his habits was to lay his head on the thigh of his beloved wife, Aishah upon returning home from a hard day’s work preaching to his people.
"So after this talk, I recommend to husbands on returning home to show your affection to your wives. Please upon returning home, greet them with a 'salam' (greeting with a blessing) and whenever the two of you are free, do hold hands, never mind if you have been married for 20, 30 or 40 years. Your wife would be full of surprise, because all those long years you had not done that, but do not hesitate, go ahead; always be intimated with her, 'insya-Allah' (God willing) you would find out that your home would be full of 'barakah' (blessing) and with love."
Drinking and eating
"Oh, what a simple thing to emulate the Prophet," said an 'ustaz'. The general rule is to sit whenever one eats or drinks; begin with reciting 'Bismillah' (in the name of Allah) and when finished, recite 'Alhamdulillah' (all praises to Allah). Then one should drink or eat with one's right hand.
"But this simple thing of the Prophet s.a.w. too people cannot follow...look around you, there are functions where even the ones organized by educated people and religious bodies where you find the guests drinking and worst of all, people eating whist standing."
Conveying 'salam'
An 'ustaz' said, when two persons (or more) meet, begin with 'salam' 'Assalaamu alaykum" (peace be upon you). And in the Qur'an in Surah An-Nisa 4:86) Allah SWT says; "And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it or (at least) return it equally."
Is it difficult to give 'salam'? It is a simple thing to do and by doing it, we are following the Prophet's way of life and it is a way to prove our love for him. But why does it seem hard for us to convey salam'? It seems to be 'the hardest word'...
Seeking knowledge
"Why masjids are always 'almost empty' during 'tazkirah' (talks) normally held between maghrib and isya prayers?" asked an 'ustaz'. "Seeking knowledge is a duty on every Muslim," says the Prophet in a 'hadith' narrated by Imam Bukhari.
The Prophet's way of life is to seek knowledge which must continue as long as breath of life reminds in our bodies. Allah SWT says: "...those truly fear Allah, among His servants, who have knowledge..." (Qur'an 35: 28)
So why not take time from our busy schedules to be at the masjid for at least during the maghrib-isyak 'tazkirah' slot. Is this difficult for us to follow?
'Leading by example' (kepimpinan melalui teladan)
An ustaz said: "During the Ahzab War (War of the Trench), a 'sahabah' (Companion) of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. by the name of Salman Al-Farisi suggested that Muslims dug wide and deep trenches around Madinah to stop the invading allied forces of the Mushrikin armies. Their leader, Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. toiled and sweated in the hot sun with his 'sahabahs', many a time without enough food and water. There was a time when the Prophet had to tie a big stone onto his stomach to lessen his thirst and hunger.
But today, why must our leader be only good at officially opening “projects”? He will officiate at a ground breaking ceremony or the laying of a foundation stone of the project, and in the next hour or worst still minutes later he would be gone...
Why not our leaders emulate the Prophet’s s.a.w. way of life? Always be with the people and in this way you can share their feelings and their 'pangs of life' such as coping with the ever rising prices of necessary items or having 'kangkung goreng' (fried kangkung) every day for their lunch and dinner tables!

Rabiulawal 11, 1443: Anak-anak lelong harta...(U)
Dengan Nama Allah Yang Maha Pemurah Lagi Maha Penyayang, selawat dan salam ke atas junjungan besar Nabi Muhammad s.a.w.
Renungan
"Dan janganlah kamu menghampiri zina, sesungguhnya zina itu adalah satu perbuatan yang keji dan satu jalan yang jahat yang membawa kerosakan." - Maksud Ayat al-Quran Surah al-Israa': 32
SEJAK 'pencen' saya mengusahakan sebidang tanah pinggir (seumpama Felda) milik isteri saya; suatu pagi ketika berada di kedai runcit perkampungan tanah rancangan itu terdengar saya 'perbuatan hangat' sekumpulan penduduk di kedai kopi sebelah.
Beberapa 'penghuni tetap' kedai kopi itu mengusik seorang lelaki Tionghua yang baru datang - antara lain mereka berkata: "Ha, kau Seng, kau ini tahu lelong saja harta bapak kau. Itu saja kerja kau sedangkan bapak kau macam nak mati bukak estet, kau perhabis hartanya."
Memang betul, lelaki Cina itu telah 'sapu licin' harta peninggalan bapanya - dulu hartanah (estet) mendiang orang tuanya terkenal seantero negeri sekarang nama itu tidak disebut lagi.
Namun 'penghuni setia' kedai kopi itu patut menginsafi diri - dulu mereka atau bapa mereka memiliki kebun getah yang luas tetapi semuanya sudah habis 'dilelong' terutama kepada 'pihak bijak' yang rapat dengan penguasa negeri - kononnya tanah itu akan dibangunkan oleh kepentingan bangsa dan masa depan negara, hakikatnya tanah itu dibangunkan perumahan mewah yang banyak terjual kepada orang 'Singapore'!
Sekarang ini kebanyakan peneroka atau anak mereka hanya memiliki tanah tapak rumah - yang lain sudah habis dilelong. Dulu peneroka bersusah payah menebas hutan, menanam pokok getah selepas dianugerahkan tanah pinggir atas inisiatif PM ketika itu, Tun Razak Hussein, tetapi kebanyakan tanah-tanah itu sudah dilelong.
Memang betul ada peneroka dan waris mereka sudah menjadi jutawan segera sehingga ada yang 'menambah bini' dan 'mengupah pemandu' (bagi yang tidak tahu memandu kereta baru yang mereka beli) tetapi semua tinggal kenangan.
Anak-anak peneroka itulah yang ramai menjadi 'penghuni setia' kedai kopi - bapa mereka 'macam nak mati' kumpul harta, kebanyakan mereka pula sudah melelong harta itu.
Jika golongan anak seperti Seng (anak tauke estet), Ali dan Ahmad (anak-anak peneroka) sudah melelong harta bapa mereka, apa pula kurang segelintir pemimpin negara kita yang sudah dan dalam proses 'melelong' hartanah hatta negara ini sendiri.
Jika kita menyoroti sejarah, misalnya kejatuhan empayar Kesultanan Melaka ke tangan Portugis pada 1511; antara puncanya adalah pemerintah (Sultan) terakhir adalah korup dan suka berfoya-foya termasuk suka menambah isteri cantik tak kira kalau perlu merampas isteri atau tunang orang.
Apabila pemimpin korup, pembesar pun begitu, akhirnya empayar Melaka yang gagah itu jatuh ke tangan Portugis. Cuba bayangkan negara Portugal yang jauh ribuan kilometer itu dengan askar armada perangnya terpaksa berlayar berbulan-bulan di lautan, akhirnya dapat menewaskan pahlawan Melaka yang hebat-hebat.
Kira-kira 100 tahun empayar Melaka boleh bertahan kerana pemerintah-pemerintah awalnya berwibawa tetapi musnah disebabkan 'kekorupan' pemerintah terakhir; kini kita amat bimbang jika sejarah ini berulang.

Rabiulawal 10, 1443: Sampaikan sahaja, hidayah itu milik-Nya...

Renungan
Sesungguhnya engkau (wahai Muhammad) tidak berkuasa memberi hidayah petunjuk kepada sesiapa yang engkau kasihi (supaya dia menerima Islam), tetapi Allah jualah yang berkuasa memberi hidayah petunjuk kepada sesiapa yang dikehendaki-Nya (menurut undang-undang peraturan-Nya) dan Dialah jua yang lebih mengetahui akan orang-orang yang (ada persediaan untuk) mendapat hidayah petunjuk (kepada memeluk Islam). (al-Qasas: 56)
SEMPENA bulan keputeraan Rasulullah, Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. yang kita kasihi (Rabiulawal), teringat saya kisah ini yang diharapkan dapat mengguris sekelumit rasa hati bahawa betapa hebat perjuangan baginda sedangkan kita tidak ada apa-apa.
Menyedari kelemahan diri dalam berkomunikasi secara bersemuka, saya 'belajar-belajar berdakwah' dengan mengedarkan risalah keagamaan; salah satu risalah itu adalah berhubung tata cara bagi wanita berpakaian menutup aurat dengan sempurna.
Ketika berjalan dalam satu-satu 'safar' (kembara), secara senyap-senyap saya menitipkan risalah itu kepada wanita-wanita terutama yang saya lihat bertudung tetapi tidak sempurna penutupan aurat mereka seperti memakai baju-T mendedahkan lengan atau berjeans dan blaus terlalu ketat.
Bagi saya, wanita-wanita bertudung sudah berada di permulaan landasan betul, cuma mereka perlu 'ditolong sikit lagi' dengan menerangkan kepada mereka bahawa menutup aurat itu bukan bermakna bertudung saja.
Apa erti bertudung jika pakaiannya tersangat ketat, lengan terdedah atau mempamerkan akhlak kurang baik di khalayak ramai seperti berpeluk-pelukan dengan teman lelaki atau ketawa berdekah-dekah sesama kawan.
Hal seperti ini dibimbangi memberi gambaran serong kepada sesetengah 'non-Muslim' apatah lagi di kalangan orang Islam sendiri yang 'mencemuh' Muslimah bertudung seperti kata-kata "apa guna bertudung, jika bentuk badan terbonjol sana sini", atau "apa guna bertudung labuh jika perangai buruk."
Sudah bertahun-tahun saya 'berdakwah secara kilat ini'...banyak ragam dan aneka peristiwa serta pengalaman dilalui. Pernah ketika ke suatu destinasi, saya melintasi sekumpulan remaja perempuan (ada yang bertudung dan tidak) lantas memberikan setiap seorang daripada mereka risalah berkenaan.
Selepas menyerahkan risalah berkenaan, cepat-cepat saya 'blah' tetapi ketika menoleh ke belakang, terpandang reaksi mereka yang meruntun hati. Seorang bergolek-golek di lantai sambil ketawa kuat...antara dengar dan tak dengar, dia berkata...hah, hah, pak cik tu nak jadikan kita macam ni (ada lakaran gambar wanita berpakaian lengkap menutup aurat di muka depan risalah itu).
Kumpulan budak-budak perempuan itu ketawa beramai-ramai, mujurlah saya 'sudah cabut' dan jauh dari situ, namun dalam hati tertusuk rasa kepedihannya. Ya pedih, pedih tetapi cepat-cepat saya insaf apalah sangat yang saya lalui itu dengan mengingati perjuangan Rasulullah s.a.w.
Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. dalam misi dakwahnya kepada penduduk Makkah, dikeji, dinista, dilempari najis dan sebagainya membuatkan puteri baginda Sayidatina Fatimah Az-Zahra menangis tersedu-sedu membersihkan kotoran di tubuh baginda.
Selain Makkah, Rasulullah s.a.w. mendakwah penduduk Taif, namun menerima penghinaan paling teruk apabila orang di sana mengusir baginda termasuk menyuruh kanak-kanak membaling batu sehingga kasutnya berlecekan darah - namun Rasulullah tetap sabar malah mendoakan agar penduduk Taif mendapat hidayah.
Mengenang perjuangan Rasululllah s.a.w. dan sahabat-sahabat baginda dan generasi berikutnya yang penuh getir dalam menyebarkan Islam sehingga kita di Nusantara ini sudah beriman, apakah kita tak terpukul kerana tak buat apa-apa untuk Islam? Malah mungkinkah kita sebagai seorang Islam lebih merugikan Islam itu sendiri dengan perlakuan dan cara hidup yang buruk menyebabkan Islam dipandang hina oleh sesetengah 'non-Muslim' dan pencaci Islam.
Disebabkan celoteh ini berkaitan aurat wanita, cuba 'hadamkan' situasi ini - wanita bertudung tetapi berpakaian terlalu ketat misalnya berkebaya kain belah, memakai jeans serta berbaus singkat atau ber-T-shirt' tanpa lengan, menonjolkan 'sana sini' (maaf) termasuk alur bontot...orang 'non-Muslim' mungkin berkata..."kita orang pun tak pakai macam ni."
Dalam kembara saya dahulu, saya kerap ke Hentian Bas Pudu Raya. Saya turut mengedarkan risalah-risalah itu kepada gadis-gadis di kaunter tiket bas. Suatu ketika, saya terkejut apabila seorang gadis kaunter berkata: "Pak cik sudah beri saya risalah ini tiga kali dah. Saya dah pun bertudung."
Syukur gadis itu sudah bertudung. Alhamdulillah. Saya 'mahu kembang bangga' kerana usaha saya berhasil tetapi malam itu ketika menghadiri kuliah di masjid, sang ustaz seolah-olah dihantar oleh Yang Maha Berkuasa memberi pukulan maut kepada saya apabila dalam kuliahnya berkata: "Hidayah ini milik Allah, kita berusaha saja. Kalau kita buat 1,000 kali pun kalau Allah tak izinkan, tak jadi."
Ya tak ya juga...Nabi Nuh berdakwah hampir 1,000 tahun, pengikut baginda dikatakan 83 orang sahaja. Bagi Nabi kita yang kita kasihi, Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. begitu mahukan bapa saudaranya Abu Talib beriman, namun hidayah itu milik Allah SWT.
Firman Allah SWT bermaksud: Sesungguhnya engkau (wahai Muhammad) tidak berkuasa memberi hidayah petunjuk kepada sesiapa yang engkau kasihi (supaya dia menerima Islam), tetapi Allah jualah yang berkuasa memberi hidayah petunjuk kepada sesiapa yang dikehendaki-Nya (menurut undang-undang peraturan-Nya) dan Dialah jua yang lebih mengetahui akan orang-orang yang (ada persediaan untuk) mendapat hidayah petunjuk (kepada memeluk Islam). (al-Qasas: 56)
Ya, kita sebagai manusia buat sahaja kerja dakwah kita, hidayah itu milik-Nya!

Rabiulawal 9, 1443: Berperananlah bagai burung cuba padam api bakaran Nabi Ibrahim! (U)
Dengan nama Allah Yang Maha Pemurah Lagi Maha Penyayang; selawat dan salam ke atas junjungan besar Nabi Muhammad s.a.w.
Renungan
"Menahan jiwanya daripada keinginan yang rendah (hawa nafsu). Syurga itu tempat diamnya." (al-Nazi'at 79: 40-41)
PADA sambutan Maulud Nabi (ulang tahun keputeraan Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. pada 12 Rabiulawal) yang lalu-lalu, sudah beberapa kali saya mendengar syarahan ustaz yang menyatakan setiap orang perlu berperanan dalam menegakkan kebaikan dan menghalang kejahatan (mungkar).
Sumbangan itu bukannya perlu yang besar-besar sebaliknya mengikut kemampuan masing-masing.
Kata ustaz-ustaz ini Allah SWT tidak bertanya sama ada kita berjaya atau tidak dalam usaha itu, yang akan ditanya sama ada kita melakukan usaha atau tidak.
Mereka mengambil kisah seekor burung kecil yang pada ketika Nabi Ibrahim a.s. dibakar oleh Raja Namrud berusaha bersungguh-sungguh menyiram api menjulang itu dengan mencurahkan air yang ditampung dalam paruhnya.
Apabila ditanya kepada burung itu apakah dibuatnya kerana tidak mungkin api itu padam dengan perbuatannya yang nampak sia-sia itu, burung itu berkata dia takut kepada Allah, ia hanya menjalankan tanggungjawab untuk menegakkan kebenaran dan menghalang kejahatan; untuk api itu padam itu bukan urusannya, itu urusan Allah SWT, Sang Pencipta alam ini.
Ertinya burung itu menjalankan peranan setakat yang mampu dilakukannya.
Nah, wahai saudara-saudari sekalian (termasuklah diri saya), bukalah mata zahir dan mata hati dan amat-amatilah sama ada kita telah menjalankan peranan kita sebagai penegak kebenaran dan pembasmi kejahatan.
Malulah pada burung kecil yang berusaha memadam api raksaksa yang membaham Nabi Ibrahim a.s. sedangkan kita duduk membatu menyaksikan kemungkaran di depan mata. Ayuh gerakan tubuhmu yang pasti lebih kuat daripada burung kecil itu.
Biasalah sebagai manusia yang lemah dan kerap membuat kesilapan, jika tiada pihak membuat teguran kita akan besar kepala dan fikir apa yang kita buat adalah benar belaka. Inilah yang terjadi kepada penyakit umat-umat terdahulu termasuklah Firaun, Namrud dan Hamman dan sekarang ini menjangkiti pemerintah dunia termasuk di bumi Arab dan alam Melayu.
Maka tugas kita adalah membuat kebaikan, hatta hanya berperanan sebagai si burung pada zaman Nabi Ibrahim dulu!

Rabiulawal 8, 1443: The 'real superman' (U)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful; blessings and peace be upon Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.
Reflection
The Declining Day (Al-'Asr)
1. By the declining day,
2. Lo! Man is in a state of loss,
3. Save those who believe and do good works, and exhort
one another to truth and exhort one another to endurance.
WHILE visiting one of my daughters at her hostel in UIAM Kuantan, I noticed 'these beautiful phrases' written on its noticeboard.
* When you have friends, don't expect your friends to fulfill your emptiness.
* When you get married, don't expect your spouse to fill your every need.
* When you're an activist, don't put your hope in the results.
* Don't depend on people. - Yasmin Mogahed (Writer of 'Reclaim Your Heart - Best Selling Islamic Book 2013)
Then, to whom we should depend to? As Muslim, we know the answer is Allah SWT - Creator of all the worlds and universe and of course we ourselves. But the question is how are we going 'to put into action' His orders and 'to stay away' from the things that He had forbidden? For example, Allah SWT through a 'hadith' by the Prophet s.a.w. had asked us not to get angry easily but how are we going to follow it without having the proper knowledge?
Regarding this matter, I was amazed while listening to a 'tazkirah' by an 'ustaz' (religious teacher) recently when he said 'great people' are not those who had being bestowed powers or with powers but rather a person 'who have the power to limit his desires and all sorts of worldly pleasures'.
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said: “The strong man is not the one who wrestles others; rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself at times of anger.” (Imam Muslim)
That is why we see that people with weak characters suppress their anger when dealing with their superiors but take it out on those weaker than them. A weak man will take his frustrations out on his family, a woman on her children, the rich on the poor.
Giving free rein to one’s anger results only in crime against Allah’s creatures. It is natural to feel anger in certain situations but the successful person is he who is able to control the expression of his anger. Not all crimes in Islam are recognized as crimes in secular law, but what matters to a Muslim is how their action is viewed by Allah. Anger is justified when the crime is against Allah and his Messenger, but even then it is best handled with a cool mind.
Sayidina Ali Abu Talib (radi Allahu anhu) said: “A moment of patience in a moment of anger prevents a thousand moments of regret.”
The point here is that 'great individual' or 'superman' if you wish to call him so, is a person who could control himself of his desires including his 'nafsu' (nafs). The 'ustaz' went on to elaborate by giving a simple example regarding the taking of food by an individual. He said when the food is delicious and our appetite good, then we could finish off plates after plates of the food and nobody could stop us.
But the 'real superman' is the person who knows when to stop - perhaps after having 'a small plate of food' he or she concedes that he (she) had enough...'subhanallah' (Glory be to Allah SWT) it is a very difficult thing to do.
Remember, a person who does not moderate his eating and drinking would be exposed to greed which would have the effect of spoiling his body and health.
A Muslim is ordered to eat and drink, making sure he does not waste or exceed the right limit for Allah SWT said: "...and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance,..." (Qur'an 7:31), do not eat and drink what is harmful, especially if it is forbidden and to eat and drink moderately.
Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in a 'hadtih' said: "Man has not filled a container worse than his stomach; he should be satisfied with a few bites to survive. However, if his appetite beats him, let it be a third (of his stomach space) for his food and a third for his drink and a third for his breath." (Ahmad)
The 'ustaz' then went to tell his audience the story of Talut (Saul) who took his army through a series of tests in order to assure that his fighting force was made up only of pious yet strong willed men. From an initial recruitment of 80,000, the army that faced Jalut (Goliath) and the Philistines was a mere 300.
One of the test was a decree by Talut that when his army passed by a river, they could only quench their thirst by taking only 'a scoop' of water with their bare hands but obviously the majority of his men failed. Yes, there was much water; the undisciplined ones drank as much they could, then they became heavy and could not continued their journey and mission.
When the two armies came face to face, Jalut challenged any man from Talut army to single, mortal combat, but the only volunteer was a small, agile youth named Daud (David). When it became clear to Talut that no other man was willing to volunteer, he gave the young Daud permission to face the giant Jalut. Jalut roared with laughter at the sight of the small youth, and even Talut's own army looked incredulously at the sight.
But it was Daud who came out winner. He was a 'superman'. Jalut was killed and later on the young Daud became the new king. He was none other than Prophet Daud a.s. The Qur'an says: “So they routed them by Allah’s leave and Daud killed Jalut, and God gave him (Daud) the kingdom and Prophethood, and taught him of that which He willed. And if Allah did not check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief. But Allah is full of Bounty to mankind and all that exists.” (Qur'an 2:251)
The 'ustaz' reminded his audience that each and everyone of us must have limitations in our action (doings). From the story of Talut, Jalut and Daud; we could learned something - for example 'to be great' we must have disciplined in ourselves. Of course, it is hard to do so, but we must have the 'muhajadah' (struggle in rejecting vicious desires).
For Muslims the third article in 'Rukun Islam' that is fasting helps us in controlling our desires; one example is regarding food or drink. Consumption of these items are 'haram' (forbidden) during the stipulated time eventhough they are 'our own and halal belongings'. During Ramadan we are put on test - food and drinks cannot be taken during the day - and during breaking of fast, we too we told not to be a gluttonous - yes please control ourselves.
Other than 'to limit or check ourselves' in taking food and drinks, it is also required to be rational in everything we do for example when we go shopping. True it is your money and you could follow the Western concept of shopping that is 'shop till you drop' but again as a Muslim we should check again what Islam tells us about spending our money.
Yes dear readers, be rational in buying. For example buying clothes, furniture, and luxury that are not necessary is waste of money. Buy if you have or need to do them because Islam forbids stinginess but you must know the difference between economy and stinginess which the religion forbids.
To parents, be moderates in bringing up our children. Don't be too harsh or to lenient. Follow the Islamic way of bringing them up. You are allowed to use the cane, but please know and observe the 'limit'. You don't just cane your child just to 'lepas geram' (releasing your anger ) but do it in the name of Allah SWT, then you would know when to begin and to stop it. Yes, know the limitation.
'Subhanallah', dear readers; Islam teaches us to be moderate in everything we do - it is called 'wasatiyah' - choosing to be in the middle of each and every consequences. But the problem among some of us today especially among our leaders are that when they called for the 'wasatiyah' way of living, they are the ones including their wives do things such as spending money (including public money) like there is no tomorrow and the saddest part of it - like their own hard-earned money!

Rabiulawal 7, 1443: Bolehkah digantikan berzanji? (U)

Renungan
Pesanan Nabi Isa a.s.
Nabi Isa a.s. bersabda, bermaksud: Bermula empat perkara tiada yang akan didapatkannya kecuali dengan usaha yang bersusah payah:
1. Diam daripada berkata-kata perkara-perkara yang membawa kejahatan dan perbuatan yang sia-sia dan ia merupakan permulaan daripada segala ibadat.
2. Berusaha merendahkan diri di dunia ini.
3. Memperbanyakkan zikir mengingati Allah Taala.
4. Sedikit mempunyai sesuatu harta kekayaan di dunia ini. (Hidayah Januari 2012/Safar 1433)
DALAM satu kelas pengajian di masjid berhampiran rumah saya baru-baru ini, ustaz menimbulkan kerisauan hampir tiada golongan muda yang bersolat jemaah apatah lagi mengikuti tazkirah di rumah Allah itu. Beliau berkata jemaah yang ada, dilahirkan pada tahun-tahun 1930-an, 40-an, 50-an tetapi yang dilahirkan pada 1960-an, 70-an, 80-an dan seterusnya hampir tiada.
Ertinya rumah Allah hanya diimarahkan oleh jemaah golongan veteran, orang pencen; jadi persoalannya di mana orang-orang muda berada pada waktu antara maghrib dan isyak itu? Apakah mereka berada di rumah menghadap televisyen, di kedai kopi, berpeleseran di pasar malam, pusat membeli-belah dan hiburan atau lebih teruk berada di tempat maksiat?
Sedih, sedih, ungkap ustaz itu. Apa nak jadi dengan masyarakat kita hari ini, terutama generasi muda? tanyanya. Jika ke masjid pun tak datang, bagaimana mereka nak bawakan bacaan berzanji yang kini menjadi rutin setiap malam di sesetengah masjid sekarang ini menjelang Maulidur Rasul?
Beliau kemudian melagukan sebahagian bacaan berzanji itu, sungguh mendayu-dayu, menusuk ke dalam kalbu. Namun seperti ramai di kalangan generasi berusia pertengahan dan muda hari ini, saya tiada berkemampuan untuk melakukan apa diaksikan oleh ustaz lagu apatah lagi memahami maksud bacaannya. Menurut ustaz itu, pada zaman mudanya, pada musim maulud ini, masjid akan dimakmurkan oleh anak-anak muda belajar berzanji dan kemudian pada malam-malam hari menjelang Maulidur Rasul akan melagukan bacaan itu beramai-ramai.
Namun bagi sesetengah orang daripada generasi baru, bacaan berzanji inilah antara faktor yang menjauhkan diri mereka daripada masjid. Apa tidaknya, ketika membaca beramai-ramai itu, apabila kitab dihulurkan kepada jemaah seorang demi seorang, akan 'terketak-ketak' (terketar)-lah mereka yang tak mahir atau lebih malang tidak tahu. Almaklumlah pada zaman mereka (ketika tulisan jawi hampir dikuburkan pada tahun 60 dan 70-an), bacaan berzanji itu tidak ada dalam kamus kehidupan mereka.
Pada suatu majlis ilmu (tazkirah) yang lain, saya mengambil kesempatan bertanyakan ustaz yang terbabit; apakah dibolehkan kita gantikan majlis bacaan berzanji itu dengan program-program yang menjadi kesukaan anak-anak muda untuk menarik mereka ke masjid. Apa kata diadakan konsert dengan penyanyinya membawakan lagu-lagu kerohanian seperti persembahan Maher Zain? Maksud saya, konsertnya di luar masjid, takkan dalam masjid.
Ustaz nampaknya agak sukar untuk menjawab soalan ini, beliau meminta tangguh untuk merujuk kepada kitab-kitab dan ulama lebih arif, tetapi menyatakan bacaan berzanji seperti diamalkan di sesetengah masjid itu tidak ada pada zaman Rasulullah s.a.w. malah sahabat-sahabat baginda dan ilmuan Islam awal. Namun beliau berkata adalah baik untuk menganjurkan majlis-majlis kesukaan anak-anak muda yang direstui Allah bagi mengikat mereka ke masjid.
Pencarian saya di Wikipedia, menyatakan berzanji atau barzanji adalah suatu doa-doa, puji-pujian dan penceritaan riwayat Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. yang dilafazkan dengan suatu irama atau nada yang biasa dibacakan ketika majlis akikah, khatan, perkahwinan dan Maulidur Rasul. Isi berzanji menceritakan tentang kehidupan Nabi Muhammad, yang disebutkan secara berturutan mengenai salasilah keturunannya, zaman kanak-kanak, remaja, pemuda sehingga diangkat menjadi rasul.
Nama Berzanji (Barzanji) diambil daripada nama pengarangnya yaitu Syekh Ja'far al-Barzanji bin Husin bin Abdul Karim. Beliau lahir di Madinah pada tahun 1690 dan meninggal dunia pada tahun 1766. Barzanji berasal dari nama sebuah tempat di Kurdistan, Barzinj. Karya tersebut sebenarnya berjudul 'Iqd al-Jawahir (Bahasa Arab, bererti kalung permata) yang disusun untuk meningkatkan rasa kecintaan kepada Nabi Muhammad saw, meskipun kini nama penulisnya yang lebih dikenali.
Ustaz itu berkata, adalah lebih baik untuk seseorang itu mengerti seterusnya memahami apa-apa yang dibaca dalam majlis berzanji itu. Namun apa yang berlaku, kebanyakan pembaca tidak memahaminya walaupun bacaannya ternyata begitu syahdu dan menusuk kalbu.
Itulah kata ustaz itu, membaca dengan tidak mengerti maksudnya seterusnya mengambil iktibar untuk diterapkan dalam kehidupan akan menjadikan bacaan itu majlis rutin tahunan; sebahagian kita terus gagal mengubah kehidupan kita ke arah lebih baik apatah lagi mantap dengan nafsu mutma-innah menjelang hari kematian kita yang entahkan hari ini, esok, lusa atau setahun, dua tahun, 10 tahun dan seterusnya.

Rabiulawal 6, 1443: Remember Prophet Muhammad not only on his birthday! (U)

Reflection
"Anyone who obeys the Messenger has obeyed God..." (Nisaa 4:80)
OF all the talks regarding Prophet Muhammad's birthday which I attended previously, I cherished one remark by an ‘ustaz’. He said: “Please do not remember Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. only on his birthday but keep thinking about him at all times.”
In doing so, he said ‘insya-Allah’ (God willing) all our actions would be in line with his teachings. Then our lives would be guarded; our actions would be based on the five sections of ‘hukum shara’ (law of fiqh or religious law), that are ‘waajib’ (obligatory), ‘sunnah’ (optional), ‘harus’ or ‘mubah’ (probable), ‘makruh’ (improper) and ‘haram’ (unlawful or sinful).
It is ‘wajib’ to perform our five daily obligatory prayers (subuh, zuhur, asar, maghrib and isyak) so perform our best while doing it; it is ‘haram’ to shake hands with those of the opposite sex who are not our ‘muhram’ (those who are closely related to us such as our father, mother and siblings), then just leave it.
But the problem with some of us, we ignore what is ordained upon us; we just follow our ‘nafsu’ (desires), thinking that what we do (such as shaking hands with the opposite sex) is allowed or just a ‘small sin’.
Shaking hands involving the opposite sex is rampant in top party functions. If we were to observe closely the moment when a leader arrived at a function, he would be greeted with handshakes by men and women.
The leader seemed not to have a sense of guilty when shaking and pressing his hand to the hands of other people’s wives (bini orang) or daughters (anak dara orang). It is sinful but the people of that party just ignore it. Women too, were seen pressing or pushing their way to shake hands with the top leaders.
Based on ‘this sinful’ phenomenon, I am afraid we are not thinking about Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. at all times, we are only good at remembering him when celebrating his birthday. Imagine what the Prophet would say, if he were to witness our deeds of not following his teachings and yet during Maulidur Rasul processions some of us are shouting our lungs in praising him.
During this long month of Rabiulawal, Muslims in Malaysia celebrate Maulidur Rasul; on a large scale with most of the events such as gatherings and processions being organized by government and its agencies such as the state religious department. In masjids, events such as reading of the ‘Barzanji’ (a kind of song in praise of Prophet Muhammad) were mainly dominated by the masjid’s committees.
During these gatherings, Muslims were reminded again and again about the life and sacrifice of the Prophet, his humble beginning as an orphan, his becoming a prophet at the age of 40, how he was mistreated in Makkah and about his flight from Makkah to Medina (the Hijra).
And in Medina, it was about the many battle the Prophet lead, the Islamic state of Medina he founded, the expansion of Islam in the Arabian peninsula up to his demise in Medina at the age of 63 in 632 AD.
Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. is the unanimous choice of scholars as the the greatest man in history. Michael H Hart in his book ‘The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History’ ranked the Prophet first, while Lamartine/Histoire de la Turquie/Paris 1854 asked; “If greatness of purpose, smallness of means, and astounding results are the criteria of human genius, who could dare to compare any great man in modern history with Muhammad?”
Hard’s The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History, has sold more than 500,000 copies and been translated into 15 languages. What mainly surprised readers in this book was the first person on Hart's list (Hart, 1992). Hart decided to choose Muhammad over Jesus or Moses. Hart attributes this to the fact that Muhammad was "supremely successful" in both the religious and secular realms.
During the many ‘Maulidur Rasul’ talks I attented, almost all the speakers reminded Muslims to show their love for the Prophet by always remembering him by way of pronouncing the ‘salawat’ (salutations to the Prophet) and to adhere and follow all his teachings and actions.
So what are the teachings of the Prophet s.a.w. or to cut short what is Islam? In the book ‘Essence of Islam’ (Islamic Outreach-ABIM), it is stated that Islam means complete submission or surrender to the will of Allah SWT (The Most High).
Islam also means peace and the way to achieve peace. Islam teaches that there is only one God, who is called Allah in Arabic. Since the time of emergence of the first man on earth, God in His mercy raised among men numerous prophets or messengers, such as Abraham (Ibrahim), Isaac (Ishak), Jacob (Yaakob), Joseph (Yusof), Moses (Musa), David (Daud) and Jesus (Isa). The last of all the messengers was Muhammad s.a.w.
Islam is not a new religion. It consists of the same basic message which God has given in all true religions, and all prophets brought this same message for our guidance.
Muhammad s.a.w., the final Prophet and Messenger of God, taught us the full and complete meaning of Islam (surrender and commitment to the will of God) through his words, his actions and the revealed book, the Holy Qur’an.
All Muslims actions are governed by the principles of ‘halal’ (permissible) and ‘haram’ (forbidden, unlawful or sinful). It is ‘halal’ to be involved in business activities but ‘haram’ in practising ‘riba’ (usury).
It is ‘halal’ to touch one’s wife (or to the extent of having sex with her) but is ‘haram’ for men to touch and shake the hands of non-mahram women, but why does this continue to happen at the ruling party’s functions?
All along the party leaders would be shaking hands with the opposite sex. If dealing with this ‘simple’ matter, they do not follow the teachings of the Prophet, then what could be said about their commitments and pledges in more important and pressing matters.
