First Halloween Report

You never know, when you move into a new place. Well, I suppose if you know you’re moving far enough in advance, or you move into a neighborhood you’re already familiar with…

We didn’t. Rarely even driven through the intersection before we moved over here, so we had no idea how Halloween was going to go. Would we have trick-or-treaters? Would we have vandals? I bought a big bag of candy and we waited to find out.

Because it was in the 90s all last week, we waited until the last minute to carve...

Busy, and More Busy on the Horizon

So it’s been a bit busy around here. Believe me, I haven’t forgotten my blog! I’ve just been doing other things. Like plotting my NaNovel.

I’m looking forward to this–it’s a story I’ve been meaning to write for a while. And when I’m done–well, when I’m done maybe I’ll get on with some of these half-finished things lying around here. I mean, it’ll be December, so I couldn’t possibly be very busy, right? I mean, Even the Score comes out December 1st, so that will be done, and classes end mid-mon...

WRONG on the Internet

I’ve been on the internet for a while now. Long enough to learn that most fights on the internet are not worth getting into. You see something stupid in the comments of an interesting article, you pass it by. Don’t read the comments. A few sites are exceptions, but mostly–don’t read the comments.

No, in my experience the place for debate, if it must happen, is possibly Facebook (where you are talking to friends and family, not anonymous potential trolls) and discussion forums where people want...

I Had to Cut Bits

I hated to do it, but Taro and Rafe were just having too much fun. So have a bit.

≈≈:=> §

“Chen,” I said, “remind me to introduce you to my sister.”

“That,” Rafe said, “is your cue to run away screaming.”

“Amen,” Burck put in. “What’s your sister up to now, anyway, Hibiki? You said she’s a freighter pilot? How many ports has she been tossed out of?”

“She’s too busy fighting with Ben to take on any but the most obnoxious slime.”

“And this Ben has survived her beating on him how long?”

“Verbal fights...

Autumn Sale!

Five years ago Kit Campbell, Siri Paulson, Erin Zarro and I were excited, busy, and a bit panicked. We knew what we wanted to do–put outqualityworks that didn’t fit into neat boxes–but we weren’t sure how we were going to do it.

Five years ago tonight I was frantically editing, site-building, getting confused on the schedule and freaking out on my fellow TDPers because of it…

I can’t believe it. In two months–on December 1st (officially, sssh)–I’ll have spent five years as an author. It’s been...

The NaNo Quandary

I do this every year. Even the years that I insist I am not doing NaNo, that I’d be a fool to do NaNo, I am NOT DOING NANO.

Still I ponder what I might write for NaNo.

This year I want to do it. I miss doing NaNo and I want to do it, even if I have a book coming out December 1st.

Hey, I’ve got the book-publishing down, right? I know what I’m doing. And the writing 50K in a month? It’s a cinch. Why shouldn’t I do both at once? Along with taking two reading-heavy classes and working full time and...

Petition to Abolish Monday Mornings

or at least, the necessity of getting out of bed on Monday mornings.

I don’t understand how this hasn’t happened yet. I know y’all support this, right? I’d think it was one thing all people could unite behind.

Somebody start a petition. I’d do it, but I’m trying to prop my eyes open with these toothpicks.

10 Things That are Better Since My Income Went Up

Edit To Add: Thought of two more. Make that twelve things.

Don’t get me wrong. Don’t imagine that I am, by any stretch of the imagination, rich (except in my new wonderful job that I love, and my family that I love, and my 2007 Corolla that I love…). But yeah. Monetarily? Not rich. My hourly rate X 80 hours X 26 pay periods doesn’t break $30K. That said, it’s better than it was, and a damn sight better than a lot of people are managing.

And even better, tthere are things I can do now, that I co...

Friday Linksp@m

Happy Friday, y’all! I’m still not braining enough to review a book, so havesome other interesting stuff instead.

Greek tomb being excavated, looks amazing.

Spock is confused by me.

What beauty (supposedly) looks like.

Some pretty awesome photos from WWII.

Ah ha ha! So cute!

Happiness isn’t what people think it is. Or so says Cracked.

Here’s an amazing picture from Iceland. Stay safe over there!

Yeah, that’s all I got. Feel free to add your goodies to the pile. It’s like stone soup!

Random Thoughts from a Kind of Boring Training

So I’ve been a bit busy, what with homework and editing and the new job and all. In lieu of anything intelligent, have some scribbles from today’s notes:

Do we need to verify everything she says? Stop asking her to repeat herself! Effing record it if you have to.
