I Lost My Book

I think it might be in my trunk. I hope it’s in my trunk!

Time was, this never would have happened. Back in school when I read a book a day most days, my book would not have left my hand long enough to get lost.

I still can’t quite believe it. I’ve been waiting MONTHS to start that book (Empire of Ivory, fourth in the Temeraire series) and I finally start it and TWO HOURS LATER (as best I can reconstruct) it’s missing.

Let me start at the beginning. Last week was a bit of a whirl. We went places...

Let’s Talk Fish

For years I’ve had my old district take money out of my paycheck, to pay me for the six paychecks I don’t get over the summer. It always works about the same. The first few payback-paychecks are smaller than they should be. If I call and complain, they tell me some mumbo jumbo about how the days changed (but I still, no matter where the days fall, worked a ten-month schedule). Then I get checks that are just exactly the same as the ones I’d get through the year. Then I get one that is twice w...

Love is What It’s About

Just a wee bit more about “Do What You Love and You’ll Never Work a Day.”I mentioned this guy says that’s bad advice. I say, if you don’t want to do your favorite thing all the time because then it will be work and you won’t enjoy it as much…why do people get married?

Ahem. Moving on.

Under Her Protection ebook 200x300 ishSpeaking of never working a day, the new anthology is out! Writing Guardian was fun (once I got past the didn’t-want-to-MOVE part) and then we got to put the book together. I made the cover, out of some AWESOME fi...

Kermit T. Frog Reporting from the New Job

kermit-yay-flail-o

Yeah, so maybe that says it all. But just in case…

I’m happy to report that I love my new job. The school is a neat place, much smaller than my old one, but better laid out–for me, at least. My office looks out into the main area, so I’ll never feel like I’m cut off from the people I’m there to take care of. My new boss likes my work, my new coworkers are lovely people, and the work is pleasant, meaningful, and well within my capabilities.

Honestly, it feels like a vacation (she said very quiet...

Perils of a Perfect Partner

Do you know that person who has it all together? In high school she had the schedule of work for every course copied into her planner, and she carried that planner everywhere. Even months ahead, sheknew when she was going to start and finisheach assignment, and she studied daily. If you forgot to write down the assignment or dumped coffee on your notes—or ditched class to meet your boyfriend behind the stairwell—she was the one you called to catch you up.

You had the higher IQ, but she was the...

Squished

I love this time of year, and I hate it. Diving into another school year is exhilarating–and exhausting. This year it’s a bit more of both, since it’s my last time at this school. This week I work at a school with 850 students. Next week my school will have about 20 very special students. I can’t wait to get there–and I hate to go.

Hmm. I think my Pisces is showing.

The worst part about this time of year, though, is how it squashes my creativity flat. By the time I get home all I want to do is...

She’s Not a Fake!

A friend once told me that she felt like she wasn’t good enough at her job. She was afraid of being caught–that people would figure out she didn’t belong in her position. Her counselor had told her to put a note somewhere only she could see it, something affirming. You are good enough, maybe. Or you earned this position. I don’t remember that part exactly. What I remember is thinking there’s a name for it!and It’s not true!and I’m not the only one!

The friend who made this confession is both a...

A Watched Phone Never Boils

It’s like back in the old days when people smoked in restaurants. Okay, when I smoked in restaurants. I smoked. Yes. I don’t anymore.

Anyway. It was magic. We’dget our drinks, order our food, wait forever, light up cigarettes–and bam! Dinner arrived.

Due to sudden issues with my place of employment, I’ve been job-hunting. I started when I got back from Pinetop, putting in applications, sending out my resume, hitting every job I thought I could enjoy (that paid enough.) Though I was desperate to...

Holy Bookmarks, Batman!

Hi. I’m KD and I have a problem.

I never want to let a good site get away from me. Found it on Google? Great. But what if it doesn’t come up next time? Better bookmark it.

Bookmarks are great. I love bookmarks. Folder after folder, all over my browser, tier after tier…

I tried del.ici.ous, and then it went away. Trunk.ly was the same. Tumblr has helped some, but there’s still so much.

Mind-mapping software? Got it.

Names for your pet? .

Free online coding lessons? Yep.

Collection of night idioms...
