Enablers, All

My friends are all enablers. In the best possible way, of course.

So today I mentioned my love for Pacific Rim on Twitter. Then this happened.

Taro and Rafe in a Jaeger

I love my friends.

Gettin’ Wild Here

The backstory: since my daughter’s extremely bad choices in January, she’s been on, basically, lockdown. We’ve gone through lots of counseling, I’ve relied on my friends tokeepher in the company of responsible adults at all times, she can only see her friends if they visit under my supervision† and so on.

You might guess that constantly supervising a 15yo has resulted in some serious disruption of our lives. So when thebehavioral health placeoffered us respite care, I jumped on it.

It’s marvelo...

Furry Hooligans Trash my Desk!

Even as I was trying to work, these juvenile delinquents were knocking things over and destroying stuff! Can you believe it?

Now, I’m not usually down on the youth of today. They have their own set of struggles, God knows. But I ask you. Is this kind of destruction really necessary?

No remorse at all, as they knock things over and chew on things…

Then, so typical of today’s jaded and cynical youth, they turn on each other.

As if they haven’t destroyed enough!

All we of the older generation could d...

Do Some Good

Fuck all the badness in the world right now. I say, let’s do some good.

Not One More. Now it’s Seattle Pacific University a school in Oregon† in the crosshairs. This has GOT TO STOP. I could go on for a while, but it would mostly be swear words.

Unless you actually need them, stop using plastic straws. Yes, they make it easier to deal with ice, but you know what else makes it easier to deal with ice? LESS ICE. And then you get more soda, too.

Type, or the Albatross Gets It!

Ugh, the blank page. Again.

Even when I’m editing, I try to do 750words every day. I like to make sure the writing gears are greased before I set to work. But that leads to me facing the blank page at the start of every writing day.

Sometimes I like the blank page. Sometimes when I’m stuck, I just open a new document and start typing. Sometimes commentary–

omg can’t believe I can’t get this to MOVE damn you MOVE, why did I let her say that? It takes the scene in the wrong direction except that’s...

Doomy Summer of Editing DOOM, Volume ?

So today is the first REAL day of my vacation, somehow in my head. Though I’ve been officially off work since Tuesday, there were appointments and I had to go back in to work (unofficially) both Wednesday and Friday, and on Thursday one of my administrators accidentally locked the keys belonging to the OTHER administrator in the vault, which meant that without involving persons of the district level, I was the only one who had a key to get those keys…

Anyway. Vacation. If you’ve been around, y...

Escapist Literature for the Win

So I posted my angry rant about #YesAllWomen. That has consumed me for a few days–I think it’s important and I don’t want it to just taper off into silence. I’ve been discussing, and angrily reading tweets, and I’ve got to step away.

Today on my Twitter timeline appeared a link with a picture of a puffin (they’re cute!) and I clicked to find out that puffins are in trouble. Not only that, but they’re a “canary” species†, and we’re all in trouble.

I tweet. I blog. I sign internet petitions and r...

#YesAllWomen, Dammit

Like Elizabeth Bear, I’m just fucking tired.

Because a 15yo of my acquaintance doesn’t believe she was raped, since after she said no several times yet he continued to touch her she “got hot” and stopped saying no.

Because I had a dear friend twenty years ago that I couldn’t believe had never been harassed/touched/molested/assaulted. All my friends had been. Hadn’t all women experienced it by the age of 23? How could it be?

Because some people think the #YesAllWomen tag is about man-bashing.

Beca...

Trying to Get Stuff Done

So since that marvelous seminar I went to back in April (or was it March?) I’ve been learning a bit more about how to be productive. Last night I was listening to a recorded webinar about “single-tasking.” One of the bits of advice was to “plan tomorrow today.” Meaning that you should walk into work knowing what you want to get done that day so you don’t spend your morning puttering about on things that don’t matter.

’cause I totally do that, yep. >.<

Anyway. I was thinking about what I could do...

The End is Near

The end of the school year is a big deal for me, especially when I’m not actually working into the summer. Two whole months off! Two whole months of living off my savings! Time to do ALL THE THINGS (that don’t cost much money.)

For years I’vealways had grandiose plans. There have been a couple Doomy Summers of Editing Doom. There was the year I bought a family swim pass and we went swimming every day because I was going to get healthy. Sometimes I turn my schedule upside down, going to bed at...
