List of DOOM, Day 1

Can you believe it? I got stuff done today I’ve been meaning to do for months.

Okay, one of them was wash my car and the other was put bumper stickers on car after washing, but those things are done now.

So. The list.

While the Cat’s Away…

Well, technically the cat is here, her handmaiden is away. But whatever.

The roomie is out of town. It doesn’t happen often, that she leaves and I don’t. Last time, I don’t think I did much except what I always do–keep the house running. Which isn’t really fair–when I go out of town, the roomie usually cleans. Once she put (IIRC) 26 miles on her Fitbit, in a cleaning/dance party.

So. This time she’s gone for three weeks. My school is out, so work is a lot less of a pain in my backside. I’m st...

Editing Flail

It takes time to find your way into an edit–or at least it does me–and that “time” seems to be relative. Do I have a month until the story is due? It will take me two weeks to get past the flail. Do I have six months till deadline? It’ll take five months to get past the flail.

Okay, I don’t think I’ve ever flailed for five months. If it was that far out, I probably just meant to start and didn’t, wrote some notes and thought about it and didn’t put any actual work in, then picked it up two mo...

Say Hello to My Little Friend

I’ve heard it asked many times, how does anyone get anything done after the internet? Well, I might have to ask–how did anyone ever get anything done before smartphones? Or is it just me who is so lazy? Or, well-intentioned, willing, but easily distracted?

My phone reminds me to yell at my representatives in Washington and Phoenix.* My phone wakes me up, and my phone talks me to sleep. It’s teaching me Spanish and German. It tells me what others in the world are yelling about. (Arya Stark, mo...

How the [bleep] is it May?

And where the freak have I been?

I don’t even know, man. I don’t even know.

That thing where I try to do more with my life than go to work and come home and go back to work goes on. It’s been rough lately, because the AC has been non-functional for two weeks. The weather hasn’t been too hot (thankfully!) but it’s just enough to throw everything off. I come home from work and it’s not hot in the house, but if I turn the stove on to cook dinner, it will be. So I wait, and I screw around until i...

Diving into Structure

Nope, despite a few random posts, this has never been and still isn’t a how-to-write blog, and so I’m not about to talk a lot on how to write a book. That can be found all over the internets, and where I got it is where they (most of them) got it, so yeah.

[image error]No, this isn’t all of them. Maybe half. Maybe.

On the left there–that’s Scene & Structure by Jack M. Bickham. Next to it, and the ancestor of it, apparently, is Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight V. Swain. Lots of writers credit th...

A New Chair

So you may remember I KonMari’d my room (some.) One of the things that I moved out was my office chair. With (a) high arm(s,) it didn’t go under the desk, and the mat that I used to protect the floor got in the way, and the chair was old and missing an arm and… So I decided that I would try using a dining room chair instead, and if I liked it, I’d just buy a nice non-wheeled chair.

Friends, I have tried. At first I kind of liked it. But my feet dangled, and it wasn’t adjustable (obviously) so...

Always RTFM

Over at TDP last week, I was talking about a collision of gentle hints that it might be a good time for me to get my room in order. TL;DR version: after having my room painted, I didn’t want to put stuff back in it. I liked it nearly empty. Never one to turn down a hint on how to productively procrastinate instead of writing, I therefore spent a good part of my weekend working on my room.

Some things, for me, are easy. Other things, not so much. Clothes and shoes and purses? If I have any ext...

Back on the Word Train

I’ve been going back and forth on the writer’s block thing. I thought I was over it, then I wasn’t, and I think last I posted I claimed to be over it…I dunno. I’m starting to think it’s a thing that’s going to be bothering me a while longer, if not forever (dun dun DUN.)

But here’s the thing. It can beat me up. It can make writing really really hard like pushing a boulder up a hill hard. But it can’t make me stop.

I’m a writer. I have, at times, written words, and that makes me a writer. So t...

Bloggy Bloggy Blog Post…

Is it that time of year again? Where I pick my head up, look around, and go “oh crap, where’d that whole year go?”

I don’t think I do it anywhere as regular as “Every January 13th” or even “every January,” but I do it fairly regularly, I think. I wake up, it feels like. Look around and wonder where I am and how I got here and why I went to sleep again when I decided I didn’t want to do that anymore…

Apparently it’s normal. I mean, that’s what mindfulness is all about fighting, after all, and...
