Outside Over Tech
Technology is a beautiful thing. It allows for the world to be smaller, collaborative and innovative together.
Technology also allows us to hide behind our keyboards, be addicted to our phones and forget that there is life beyond a screen.
I returned from Fargo with a desire to doodle. It is something I use to do all the time as a kid and my father blames computers for taking me away from doing it.
Sure, I still doodle in the corner of my notebooks during conference calls and other bits of b...

The Magic of Misfitcon
Magic is hard to put into words.
How do you describe in an articulate fashion what occurs when a group of individual comes together to form a tribe that is nothing short of magical?
I’ve been mulling over this since I boarded my flight home. Sure, my photo album captures some of the magic, but to put it into words is a whole other challenge.
Fargo, North Dakota is a city that I’ve spent less than two weeks in over the course of my life. Yet, every moment spent there has been important to my...

Technology Makes Life Around My House More Fun
This weekend as we unplugged and headed outside to help kick off summer I got thinking about the balancing act between loving technology and being ok to leave it behind at the same time.
It only takes one look at the above photo to see the variety of things you might find laying around my office (and house) and more and more of them are connected every day.
Last night as we sat around a campfire, I took a few photos with my phone and then put it away.
My Droid Turbo gives me all the camera c...

Boston Ballet’s Thrill of Contact
A year ago, I had very little appreciation for ballet.
I respect all forms of arts and creativity, but the ballet was one form that never completely clicked with me.
But, after several invitations from the Boston Ballet to attend different shows, I’ve grown to enjoy ballet more than I imagined I ever would.
Thrill of Contact is the final performances of the current season and I encourage you to check one of them out because there is something for everyone.
Theme and Variations with choreogra...

The Decision to Chop Wood
If you were to look in the woods behind my house you’d see this in one little corner. It is the start of a wood pile that I made recently after chopping up some wood from a tree my father dropped the last time he was down here.
Last winter we noticed we were running low on wood, so he picked a tree that wasn’t doing so well and sawed it down. He then proceeded to saw it into logs that were a good size for our fireplace and then left them for me to chop.
I thought about sharing this because i...

What I Learned Teaching My First College Class
Bentley University is one of the best business schools in the country. I say that as a proud alumnus of the school.
Over the years I’ve taught online classes forLynda.com, CreativeLive,TreehouseandUSF.
Those and every talk I’ve ever given showed methat teaching was in my blood and something I’ve always thought about doing more of.
But, when offered the opportunity to teach eMarketing, in a classroom, at Bentley I jumped at the opportunity.
Now that grades are in and graduation is on the hori...

Savvy Nonprofits Use Content Marketing to Raise Millions During Give Local America 2015
When Tenacity 5 Media inquired about hiring me to be part of the team for #GiveLocal15 I instantly said yes.
Before that conversation, I had never heard of Give Local America, but this project would require me to use my storytelling skills to highlight, share and document the great work done by participating charities. All this while raising millions of dollars to help over 9,000 nonprofits located all over the United States.I even got to travel a bit to be part of this, so it was a perfect...

Making the Most of Mobile Photography
As a photographer, I take pictures with whatever camera I have with me.
Today, that quite often means the phone in my pocket which currently is a Motorola Droid Turbo (provided to me for free as a member of the Verizon Influencer program I am part of).
This also means that I get asked by friends, family and strangers for advice on how to take better photographs on their phonesso I thought I’d write this post to share the advice I most often give.
All of this advice is non device specific, so...

A Walk Around San Francisco With My Camera

Photograph by David B. Thomas
This past weekend found me inSan Francisco working on a project for TripIt, but had lots of free time before the video shoot happened.
My buddy David volunteered to meet me at the airport and go from there.
After checking in to my room at the Hotel G, we grabbed some steaks and cocktails at John’s Grill and then walked around San Francisco with our cameras (him a Fujifilm X-T1 and me with my Samsung NX1) to see what we would see.
Here is what I saw.
