Ice Cream & College Savings: The WGBH FunFest

The air was filed with a mixture of sun tan lotion & cotton candy, and everywhere you looked there were strollers and sun hats. The groovy sounds of a man singing about what it felt like to be a frog filled our ears as we passed in our tickets and headed in to the event.

I wish we had known about this event when our kids were younger. Seeing Curious George walk by and then bumping into Clifford the Big Red Dog made me smile.

Finding the Light is Easy When You Know It Will Be There

Sun Rise Over the Field - CC Chapman

Chasing light is something every photographer does. We seek it out, lust for it and when we find it, we celebrate it.

When the sun sets, we celebrate and wait for the light to be just right to capture as much natural beauty as possible.

Planning the future while watching the sun set

But, in many parts of the world when the sun goes down it means a new search for light begins.

A search for reliable power to light homes and businesses. To keep streets illuminated and safe to walk down. To heat houses, cook food and allow students to study...

A Weekend in Frederick, Maryland

A Weekend in Frederick Maryland

Not all road trips need to be epic journeys through the corners of the world. Sometimes they are a simple micro-adventure over the course of a long weekend.

We jumped in the car and headed south to visit my baby sister in Frederick, Maryland. She had lived there for a few years and I was the only member of my family who had yet to visit her (a fact that my family loved to nag me about).

After last summer’s road trip, I have no problem driving long distances. Plus, when you schedule a stop ha...

Don’t Miss The WGBH FunFest This Saturday!

This fall, I will find myself with two high-schoolers in my house. Time sure does fly when you are having fun.

Of course this means that we are thinking a lot about how we are going to pay for college and this weekend we are hoping lots of fellow New England families will come out to learn how to start (or better continue) saving at the WGBH FunFest!

Besides live music, ice cream, and lots of fun for all ages, this is another stop on the 2015 U.Fund Dreams Tour, presented by Fidelity & MEFA.

I’m Thankful I Don’t Have Regrets

Ever Had #SwitchersRemores

I love receiving paid writing assignments. Few things make me happier in this world.

So when members of the Verizon Wireless team offered to pay me to write a post “that includes a story about a decision you may have made once in your life which you regretted AND chose to reverse course or would have LIKED to reverse course.” I gladly accepted the assignment and began planning.

The marketing expert in me lovedthe assignment because they areusing these posts to raise awareness for their curre...

True Adventures Are Rarely Planned

true-adventures

Thirteen years ago I typed out the first post for thisblog. It was random, rambling and about the events of the recent past. Sounds pretty much like any other post around here.

Looking back, I could never imagine that writing would take me around the world, have me work on amazing projects and meet some of the best humans on the planet.

While there might have been a plan at some point, I could have never planned for the adventure I continue to be on.

The more people I talk to, the more I rea...

Surviving Summer Vacation With and Without Technology

Balancing screen time and sunshine

Todays world is full of parents who work from home. For the past nine years, I’ve been one of them.

When summer vacation arrives, it comes with new challenges. Our home offices are no longer the sacred, quiet spaces that we love and thrive in.

While some build a writing shed or a tiny house to escape the squeals of the summertime kids (and it is something I dream of doing), it isn’t a viable option for most.

Thankfully I don’t have to worry about the technology side of the equation.

Having V...

We Are All Humans. Everything Else is an Adjective

We are all humans. Everything else is an adjective.

Last night at the dinner table, my daughter and I had a conversation about the term gender fluid.

I admitted that I didn’t know enough about it to have an opinion; but that my gut reaction to it was that it didn’t make sense to me.

This morning I took the time to read up on it so that I could form an opinion about it. Turns out that I didn’t have a full understanding of what the term means.

Now that I do I can understand and appreciate the term. I know Emily will appreciate our follow up con...

Spoiled Brats of the Internet

Spoiled Brats Doodle

This morning my doodling ended up with the above.

Being a small town kid at heart who grew up in a blue collar family, I tend to notice these things.

The #FirstWorldProblems trend has always rubbed me a bit the wrong way. Sure, I’ve bitched about things that I didn’t need to and I know that. Whenever I do, I tend to feel bad about it not long after hitting the send button.

This morning as I enjoyed my bananas and black coffee (I still think that could be a fun name for a band) my mind began...

Teaching Fuels My Soul

C.C. Chapman at Boston Creative Mornings

After the two day “conference” portion of MisfitCon, I’ve made a tradition of going for a walk with my camera and finding breakfast alone to collect my thoughts and decompress from the 48 hours of inspiration I’ve just been through.

This year I found myself in a leather and chrome booth at The Boiler Room.

Being the first customer on a Saturday morning means instant attention and fresh coffee. Exactly the combination I needed.

Reading through my notes there was plenty of quotes and thoughts,...
