Will Facebook Ever Fix Events?

FIXMEPLEASEFACEBOOK

Facebook is the Internet for plenty of people these days. They are growing as I type this and people are sharing every little detail of their lives with the servers lurking under the blue and white covers.

They finally are going to start using some of this vast data to power their new search, but how about fixing some basic functionality while they are training the hamsters new tricks?

How about fixing events?

Moments ago, I got an invite for the Social Media Breakfast Houston event I’m speaking...

Stop Eating Baby Food

babyfood

Why are we are letting ourselves be dumbed down?

Too many of us are only interested in overly simplified blog posts promising us magical equations, top ten lists and the secrets of the social platform du jour.

Babies are given blended up gloop because it is all their bodies can handle. It is yummy, easy and they enjoy eating it. Those first spoonfuls of more substantial and solid food are not always enjoyable and more ends up on the floor than in their mouths. Yet, we all grow up and stop eatin...

Origin Stories

Young CC With Blocks

Amazing Things Will Happen is not an autobiography, yet I knew I had to include the backstory of my life for the advice on the following pages to be taken seriously.

In the comic book world, this would be known as an origin story.

As more people read the book, post reviews and reach out to me directly, I’ve gotten a kick out of hearing people say “I didn’t know you ____” and then sharing something from my past.

This made me realize in today’s world we are so focused on what we are doing in the m...

FiOS – The Moment I Got It

FiOS I Got It

In a former life, Verizon FiOS was a client of mine and we did a huge campaign in the early days of the service. Involving a television show, web site, live events and even a talking teddy bear, it was a project that I had a lot of fun being part. Watch the case study video here.

So, when I was approached to take part in FiOSAmbassador Program, I was happy to do so.

One of my assignments was to share the story of the moment I “got” FiOS. They were not asking about the date I physically got it i...

We Need Next Level Conferences

The Audience

INT. JALEORESTAURANT- NIGHT

A group of friends have gathered for a special meal during a conference.

They have enjoyed an evening of great food and wine. In the midst of the conversation, one sends them down a new rabbit hole.

FRIEND 1

What conferences can you attend to be challenged?

Blank stares fill the faces of diners as they look for answers they can not find.

FADE TO BLACK

This sceneoccurreda few nights ago and I’ve been noodling over it ever since.

Conferences have to continue to present the b...

Podcast: Travel Makes You a Better Person

costabrava-travel

Travel is something that more people need to do.

While it doesn’t have to always be a to a far off country, the key is to visit places you’ve never been before.

The more exposure you get to different cultures, foods, religions and customs, the more well rounded of a person you will become.

Listen to find out more.

Full show notes here.

Getting Started Using Photography to Make Your Marketing Better

youcanchoose

Human beings love looking at pictures.

No matter what business you are in or budget you have, photography must be part of your content mix if you want to be successful. Everything from blog posts, to webinars, email newsletters and podcasts all need an image to represent them online as they are shared from network to network and friend to friend.

That is why yesterday at NMX in Las Vegas I gave the presentation How to Add Photography Into Your Marketing Mix.

We had a similar conversation at an e...

What You’ll Find on my Desk

My Desk - 1-3-2013

One of my #3Words for 2013 is minimize and yesterday I needed to clean my desk off to start that process.

My desk is one of the most important locations in my house as I spend a lot of time there. I write, edit my photos, make videos, take meetings and pretty much run my business from this very spot. Because of that I’m always trying to find the ultimate combination of technology to make it as productive a location as possible.

I took and shared this photo after cleaning off my desk and instant...

My New Giving Tuesday Column

#GivingTuesday

I love taking on exciting freelance writing assignments and while I still haven’t landed a monthly magazine column yet, I am excited to announce a new bi-weekly column.

Every Tuesday on Social Media Explorer will now be a #GivingTuesday. Each week a different non-profit will be profiled and readers will be encouraged to donate to them.

I couldn’t commit to doing this all by myself, so the very talented Marc Pitman will be splitting duties with me.

You can read more about the initiative and my fi...

Happy New Year?

2013calendar

I missed all the usual New Years celebrations this go around.

The past couple of days I’ve ached all over and generally felt like ass. Thankfully, a couple days of doing nothing finds me starting to feel human again.

While my family and the neighborhood got together to watch the ball drop, I curled up on the couch with the animals and watched half a season of LA Ink.

I’m aware that it is now 2013 because we’ve changed the calendars and I’ve seen all the firework displays from all over the world...
