What to Do When Life Gets Crazy! (Part 2 of 3)
Life is scary sometimes — the surprise diagnosis from your doctor, the unanticipated lay-off notice at your job, the unexpected repair bill. It’s difficult not to wallow in worry and fear. What’s a person to do when one or more of these life events shows up uninvited?
I wish I had a magic wand to whisk them away. I also wish I could tell you that I never worry. But that wouldn’t be true! This is part two of three on the topic of what I do when life gets crazy. It contains my most helpful ideas and tips on staying sane, peaceful and balanced during tough time.
The Magic Questions
When I’m feeling full of fear or worry, there are two questions I like to ask myself:
“Is there another way to think about this issue/concern/worry?”
I try to keep my focus on what I want instead of the place I fear. In times of difficulty, this requires a lot of consistent effort!
“What’s the most loving thing I could do for myself right now?”
This is such a fabulous question because it puts my focus on my heart center where true inner wisdom resides. Intuition is our soul’s compass. It guides us to love, happiness and well-being.
Switch the Channel on Worry
Worry is like any bad habit. It can be addictive! One small anxiety leads to another. Before I know it, I’ve imagined my life falling apart, not only now, but continuing into my future. I’ve found that Mindfulness Meditation has been helpful. It allows me to catch those times when my mind drifts into fear and I can choose to switch it back.
My mindfulness meditation practice involves simply closing my eyes and focusing on my breath — slow breaths in and out. I have thoughts and feelings that come up. My intention is just to sit and breathe without judging those thoughts as right or wrong. It’s just noticing them and letting them drift away. I’m simply in the present moment rather than thinking about my past or imagining the future. This has benefits that go well beyond my meditation time. I find it leaves me calmer and more peaceful, as well as able to notice when my thinking goes astray.
Imagine!
Not only do I find I have to switch the worry channel, I also have to switch the channel of my imagination. It seems hard-wired into each one of us to see our worst case scenario playing out in our mind. This is especially true in those vulnerable moments when I wake up at 2 AM, unable to get back to sleep. Which channel do I want to watch? The one where I’m seeing images of me and my loved ones happy, healthy and prosperous? Of course! One of the best manifestation tools is to imagine your life as you’d like it to be. So, in those wee hours of the morning when I’m lying in bed, I ask myself, “What if everything works out great? What would THAT look like?” That image will be where I’ll put my effort and attention.
What about you? What are YOUR favorite ways to find your center when life gets crazy? I’d love to read your answers.

What to Do When Life Gets Crazy! (Part 1 of 3)

I recently received a thank you note from a client. She wrote that at the time of her intuitive reading, she had been a little embarrassed and feared I would judge her because her life was so crazy. She went on to write that she knew I was a wise person who “never had things like this happen in your life.” At that, I could only smile.
ALL OF US have times when life turns upside-down. Yes, even me! As I’m writing this, my mother was just put into hospice care; a close family member is coping with a cancer diagnosis, and another in my family has been in the hospital for the past week. This is to say, I try to walk my talk and use all of the intuition, spiritual and personal-growth related ideas that I know about to stay centered and sane when life throws me a curve ball.
I thought it might be helpful to share my daily routine and ideas for staying centered when life gets crazy. There’s a number of things I do. I decided to make it easy to read and follow by dividing it into three parts. More next week! Click here for part 1 of 3.
Listen for Divine Guidance
When I begin to worry, I check in with my intuition. I make a habit of asking questions of my intuition and awaiting a reply. I might ask, “What could I do to feel calmer about this issue?” Intuition communicates through images and body sensations, feelings, as well as through the proverbial “still, quiet, inner voice.” I trust that it is always guiding me to the right next step. I keep a pad of paper and a pen beside me as I do this intuitive guidance exercise. Sometimes the answers come immediately. More often, they’ll pop in my head later in the day.
Use a Mantra
Several years ago, I wrote the book LISTEN: Trusting Your Inner Voice in Times of Crisis. I interviewed a lot of people about how they got through tough times in their lives. Interestingly, almost everyone mentioned a saying, phrase or mantra. It’s simply a statement that makes you feel better and more hopeful when you say it. I’ve used ones like “Miracles are flowing into my life and increasing every day.” “The Universe has big dreams for me; I’m wide open to receive direction and guidance.” “All my needs are met with ease and grace.” If you don’t have one, Google the word “Affirmations” and you’ll find a wealth of options out there. Choose one that resonates with you and your circumstances.
Lastly, the phrase “This too, shall pass” is powerful. I’ve learned one big truth over the thirty years I’ve been doing intuitive readings. THINGS CHANGE! There’s always a new opportunity, a different way of thinking, a novel way of approaching a challenging life issue. When I choose to see the problem du jour as an opportunity and not as something to be fixed, that’s when the miracles can show up in my life and yours.

Don’t Quit! Overcoming Life’s Hurdles

‘Ask Lynn’ question:
I am so glad that I can write to you. I am sure you have never been asked this question before. I am in the medical field and I am a Certified Medication Aide. I want to become an LPN. A couple months ago I took the entrance examination test for the LPN school. I passed everything but the math, which I absolutely hate. I have four months to retake just the math and pass. The problem is that I cannot bring myself to study. I know I have to do this, but I just can’t. Being an LPN is important to me so please guide me. I need your help. — Jeannie B.
This is such a great question. I know we’ve all experienced issues like this when we want to achieve or create something new in our life and yet there’s a big roadblock in the way. Here are some tips I share with my clients to help them accomplish their goals:
Set Small Achievable Goals
Sometimes you can’t move forward because the task seems way too huge. Ask yourself if there’s a way to break the job down into smaller pieces. For example, “I’ve got to pass my math test in order to get my LPN degree” seems overwhelming. But saying to yourself, “Today I’m going to read and understand pages 1 – 5 in my study guide,” seems very achievable.
Be Creative
I’ve written four books and I have to share with you that, at times, I can sit and stare at the computer screen forever. Nothing comes into my mind to write and I feel stuck. Those are the times I know I need to get creative! Some of the things I’ve done are to bring my laptop to my local Starbucks and have a delicious cup of coffee to reward myself for writing. I’ve also taken a pen, paper and a book to the wooded area near my house to do some research. If all else fails, I might even take a short nap! Do anything that shifts your focus and gets you going in a different direction.
Move Out of Your Comfort Zone
Sometimes you get stuck because you’re afraid of the change that’s happening in your life. Especially if you’re making a major life change that’s likely to mean a job full of responsibility and more than a little stress caring for others. Every one of us goes through these times of transition. You have to let go of the seemingly comfortable world you’ve known in order to move into something new and (hopefully) more rewarding.
Is Your Goal Something You Really Want?
This one is a little tricky and only you can know the answer. Is your goal something you really want? When you’re passionate, excited and enthusiastic about something, that’s a signal from your inner wisdom that your goal is worth pursuing. Conversely, if you’re feeling drained, bored or uninterested, it’s a sign to let something go or to not move ahead with it. Your difficulty studying for the math test could be your intuition indicating that becoming an LPN isn’t the right next step just now. On the other hand, you may have read all my great advice and decided you’re so excited you want to become a math whiz!
Watch Your Self Talk
“I hate math!” “I can’t study.” “I’ll never pass the test.” Have you been saying those things to yourself lately? What you say to yourself in your inner dialog has a huge impact on your life. What if you could shift your thinking a little and as a result, learning math became a lot easier? Try things like, “This might be easier than I think.” “What if I could make it fun?” “I know I’ve done tough things before, so I can do this!” “I know I’m a smart person.” “I know I’d make a great nurse and this silly math test isn’t going to stop me.” Those are just a few examples. Choose some thoughts that make you feel better and will help you break free of your self-imposed limitations. You know if you put your mind and heart into this, you can achieve anything. So go for it. And good luck!

Let The Universe Help You

Let The Universe Help You
Last week I gave a reading to a woman I’ll call “Leslie.” She was telling me how discouraged she felt. “I feel like I have a bigger calling. I want to do something with my gifts. I just can’t figure out how to get there so I just keep going back to the same old familiar life.” Does this sound like you?
One of the biggest challenges facing many of my clients is that they talk themselves out of their hopes and dreams before they even begin. They do this because they can’t figure out how to get to where they want to go. I’d like to propose a radical alternative. I don’t want you to try to figure out how to reach your goal. Let the Universe help you.
Here’s my theory — when you hold a strong desire or goal you send out a vibrational energy that the Universe wants to match. In other words, it wants to help you meet your goal. Your job is to be clear about what you want, to keep your focus off what you don’t want, and to take small steps each day based on what you feel excited about. That excitement is your intuition communicating with you. I also want you to visualize, affirm, feel and imagine your successful outcome.
My message to Leslie?
If something is in your heart that you feel excited about, you, (with the help of the Universe,) have the means to achieve it.
The Universe knows how to make your dream happen. Think of it as a kind of Divine Intelligence that has the necessary skills to bring together the exact set of circumstances you need to make your goals a reality. All the logic and intelligence you can muster may not be able to pave the way to this ultimate goal of yours as easily as the Universe can. Let Divine Intelligence do its job and orchestrate all the synchronicities, coincidences and circumstances that need to occur for you to create a life you love.
So how about you? What’s your dream for your life? Tell us about it and commit to it now.

Tips for Those Tough Life Transitions

I recently gave a talk to a women’s business group on “How to Listen to Your Inner GPS.” Before I began my presentation, I asked “How many of you are going through a life transition?” Wow! I was staring out at about 200 women, all of them with their hands raised! How about you? My guess is that you’re one of those folks, too.
In my book “LISTEN: Trusting Your Inner Voice in Times of Crisis” I reported the advice of hundreds of people who had experienced major challenges in their lives. Interestingly, most mentioned intuition as a guiding principle. Want to read some of their wise counsel? Here are their top tips to help you through YOUR transition…
Be patient — Sue Monk Kidd wrote in her wonderful book, While the Heart Waits, “When you’re waiting, you’re not doing nothing. You’re allowing your soul to grow up. If you can’t be still and wait, you can’t become what God created you to be.” This transition period in your life is, in all likelihood, time limited. Practice saying the mantra, “This too shall pass.”
Honor your grief — It hurts to let go of the old. Whether you’ve lost a friend, lost a job or are just plain lost, you’ll go through stages of grief. The most commonly mentioned are denial, bargaining, anger, depression and acceptance. You won’t go through them in order; some of these emotions will be stronger and last longer than others. The best way to manage them is to feel them and move through them. They’re part of the healing process although they may not feel that way at the time.
Manage your feelings — There are many transitions that take just a few months. You come out the other side feeling life is fresh and new and the turmoil of the change you’ve gone through seems almost forgotten. However, there are also those changes that leave a permanent mark on your soul. Losing someone — a child, a partner, a friend, a parent — there’s nothing you can do to bring them back. You may also have lost something intangible — a sense of safety, hope, financial well-being, or a belief in your physical immortality. Whatever your loss, there is part of this over which you have no control. The part that you do control is your attitude about it. Ask your inner wisdom the question, “How can I find peace in this situation?” Listen for the answer. It will come, and so will your serenity.
Clients often call me for a session when they’re going through a life transition. — More often than not, they fear there’s something wrong with them when they can’t instantly jump back on their feet after a setback. Loretta LaRoche puts it humorously when she says, “I’m always reminding people that the one constant you can count on is that things happen – and usually when you’re not in the mood for them.” If you’re going through a tough time and want some help figuring out how to find peace as well as your next steps, make an appointment . I’d love to connect with you!

What is Your Spirit Calling You to Do?

Has your life become too small? Do you walk through each day with a sense of sameness and routine? In my work as an intuitive advisor, I see it as part of my mission to help reconnect people to their own divine Spirit. It’s that part of us that knows the answers, that holds the key to why we go through difficult times. Your Spirit knows your purpose, your calling, and your highest potential. It may come as that inner voice that nudges you, saying, “There’s something bigger out there for you. You have a larger purpose. Listen.”
When you feel bored, depressed, and diminished by life, you’ve been trying to squeeze that big spirit into a dark and tiny place for too long. You may yearn for a “self-confidence fairy” to come and sprinkle her fairy dust over you, giving you the needed boost to go out and conquer the world. I’d like to share a powerful technique to help you fully hear the voice of your spirit.
Of course, it takes confidence and courage to move from “I hate my life” into the unknown world of a larger purpose and calling. It may appear to be safe to stay where you are in an unfulfilled life, but what if you don’t make this move? It’s easy to feel that you’re trapped when you pay attention to the voice of your fear, anxieties, and worries rather than the voice of your Spirit. See if you can differentiate those voices. Here’s a list that a client and I recently came up with:
The Voice of Fear
The Voice of Your Spirit
Life will always be this bad.
I am calling you forward to a bigger life.
I’m scared I won’t be able to find another job.
Take small steps. I am with you, encouraging you and guiding those steps.
I don’t have the confidence.
Confidence grows by doing the things you’re scared to do. Challenge yourself a little every day.
I have no idea what to do. I’ve lost all my hopes and dreams.
Start simply. Each day ask yourself, “What brings me joy?” I am sending answers to your heart and mind.
The economy is bad. There aren’t any jobs out there.
Remember that your thoughts create your reality. Sit with me. Share your thoughts, hopes and dreams with me. Let’s create a new reality.
I don’t know where to begin! I feel so overwhelmed when I think about starting over.
You begin where you are. What do you love? What are you curious about? Make time to explore. Take time to write about your desires. Don’t try to figure out how to make it all happen right this moment. We will walk this path together.
I only know a whole bunch of things I don’t want.
Life begins to change as you change and begin to explore. New possibilities will present themselves. I have great things in store for you. Ask me for help.
Maybe I’ll just stay where I am and try harder.
Honor your desire for a new life. Say yes to the small inklings of interest and curiosity that present themselves each day.
It takes determination to make a conscious change in your life when all around you is the drumbeat of recession, foreclosures, divorce, diminishing pension funds, addictions, layoffs, and war. You want to go screaming to some safe, stable place and hide from the pressure of making any life-altering decisions. But when it’s really time for a change in your life, the universe is going to push you toward a bigger life, toward your calling. It doesn’t let up and allow you to coast, at least not for very long. A more successful life wants to emerge.
Here’s your homework assignment:
Find a meditation technique that you like. There are a lot of new apps and meditation music out there if that appeals to you. Or you may simply choose to simply sit quietly and focus on your breath. Practice it for 15 to 30 minutes each day.
While you’re meditating, ask yourself the question, “What is Spirit’s vision for my life?” Await the response with an open heart and mind. The answer may come as a knowing, an image, a feeling or an urge to explore something. The response may also arrive when you least expect it as an “aha” moment. Be on the lookout and be receptive. Your Spirit is always with you and communicating its unique loving message to you.

Allow Intuition To Guide You
Intuition is an amazing guide. Listen in as I share how you can begin to let your intuition guide you!

Believe You Can Do It!

Believe You Can Do It
I’m noticing a trend with my intuitive advisor sessions. Many clients are clear about what they want to create in their lives. It might be a new career, a loving partnership, a healthy body. However, they soon follow up with all the reasons they believe that they can’t have what they want. The thoughts range from “I’m too old.” “I don’t have the right education.” “I’ve tried that and it didn’t work.” You get the idea!
I believe that if a dream is in your heart the Universe (God) placed it there. Who are you to deny it? You’re not alone. What you desire is a co-creation process. One of the ways that Universal Wisdom communicates with you is through your intuition. I’d like to share one of my favorite techniques for tuning in to receive answers.
Your Wise Self – Exercise
Sit quietly and close your eyes. Allow your mind to drift back to a time in your past where you had a burning desire or dream you wanted to fulfill. Perhaps it was to have a family, to own your own home, to have a certain type of career or to obtain a college degree.
Spend a few minutes communing with this younger you. What were your hopes, dreams, and ambitions five, ten, fifteen, twenty years ago? How did you know what you wanted to achieve? How did it feel? What did it look like? How did you experience it in your body? These are all ways your intuition communicates your true passions and purpose.
Allow your thoughts to move forward in time. What became of those hopes and dreams? Did you allow some of them to fall away through discouragement? Did a few of them come true? Perhaps some of your dreams changed along the way as you grew and matured.
Most of our goals do not materialize overnight. They take months, years and sometimes decades to mature and manifest. Look at one of the dreams that you have achieved and look at the process you’ve gone through to succeed. What have you learned? What are you proud of? What do you wish you had done differently?
Take a slow, deep breath and exhale. Ask your wise inner self, “What new dreams should I pursue?” Wait, listen and reflect on the answer you receive. (Pause)
Then ask, “I want to allow this dream to unfold with joy, ease and peace — how can I begin?”
Notice how this wisdom communicates. You may hear a quiet inner voice, an image, a knowing or an idea may simply pop into your head. Write it down. What action step can you take based on this inner knowledge? That’s your starting point. Now keep going. The Universe wants you to succeed.
Let me know about the answers you received. I’d love to hear more!

Forget Resolutions! Try this instead…

We all know that January is that time of year when we make resolutions to force ourselves to do things differently. We try the new diet, decide to go to the gym every day, and we create a plan to tighten our belts and live frugally. Have those resolutions worked for you in the past?
I’d like to offer a kinder, gentler idea to manifest your hopes and dreams. It’s a process I’ve used on a daily basis for the many years. I offer it to you as my New Year’s gift. Interested?
Start with Gratitude
I believe that we attract what we focus on and spend our time thinking about. Are your thoughts filled with what you don’t have, or worse, what you fear? If so, actively begin to use gratitude. I keep a journal where I write down what I currently have in my life that I’m grateful for. I also write about what I want to attract as if I already have it. Need some examples? Here’s a recent addition to my journal. “I’m so grateful to live in a beautiful home surrounded by wonderful neighbors and friends. My business is flourishing, fun and prosperous. My husband and I are looking forward to many great trips and vacations this year. We remain happy and healthy and feel much love and mutual support.”
Imagine You’ve Received Your Goal
Visualization is a powerful tool to manifest your desires. Imagine that you’ve been hired for that job you want. See yourself in the home of your dreams. Picture yourself both loved and in love with a wonderful mate, if that is your intention. I like to talk to myself (in my own mind, not out loud) as if this goal/desire is already in my life. Some people have difficulty actually picturing the outcome they wish. If that’s the case for you, simply feel the emotion of the event. You can experience excitement, delight, pleasure, exhilaration. Wow! What you wanted actually manifested in your life! Whoopee! You get the idea. As you do this for a few days you’ll begin to notice intuitive ideas and nudges will begin to come to you. Pay attention to those clues that pop into your mind.
Take Action on What Lights You Up
Re-read what you wrote on your gratitude list and then sit quietly with your eyes closed for a few moments. Ask your intuition “What am I being guided to do today?” Notice anything that comes to you that feels interesting, has energy, or simply “lights you up.” It may come in the form of an image, a feeling, a symbolic picture, a strong urge to contact someone, or an “aha” moment. This shouldn’t feel forced. It may not even make logical sense. That’s the way intuition works. Simply trust the impulse and take some action, large or small, in the direction of your guidance.
Have Patience and Keep Practicing
It’s rare that my hopes and dreams are manifested overnight. I’ve learned to take note of small hints and signs that my requests are being heard by the Universe. For example, one year my intention was to teach internationally. That didn’t happen immediately, but over the next month or so, I began to have people contacting me who lived in Europe, South Africa and Asia who wanted an intuitive reading with me via Skype. Then a publisher contacted me who wanted to print one of my books in Japanese. Soon after that, I had a request to teach in Japan. It took well over a year to manifest fully. Because of that I’ve learned to simply look for the signs of manifestation and not assume that I’m “doing it wrong” or that it isn’t going to happen. I allow the Universe to line things up for me in the right way, at the right time. I like to add the phrase “with grace and ease.”
How about you? I look forward to hearing about your results! I’d love to hear any tips or ideas YOU have about this manifesting process.

Co-Creating with the Universe

Co-Creating with the Universe
When you have learned how to decide with God, all decisions become as easy and as right as breathing. There is no effort, and you will be led as gently as if you were being carried down a quiet path to summer. — A Course in Miracles
I want to share a technique with you that I’ve been using for years. I feel it’s played a central role in manifesting miracles in my life. I have a box on a shelf in my home office that says “Help Wanted.” It sits by a lovely sculpture of a glass angel who watches over it. It contains letters I’ve sent to God. (Choose a word/concept that works for you, like Universe, All-That-Is, or Higher Power.)
Prayer is how we talk with God, and intuition is one of the ways we hear the response. I’m a bit of a pragmatist and sometimes I wonder if God has heard my prayers. So I devised a system that satisfied my need for some sort of a tangible signal that I was actually communicating with God. I wanted to know I had been heard. It works like this:
I write a letter to God telling him about my concerns. I always feel a sense of relief in writing these. It’s as if I’m talking with a good friend and sharing my concerns. I pour out my worries, fears and anxieties on the page. Then I go a step further. I make specific requests of God to help me in certain ways, always adding, “if this is in my highest interest.” I also like to add “Allow this to happen with grace and ease.”
Far be it from me to tell God what to do in my life! But I like to think God is interested in helping me with my specific concerns and will assist me in unique ways that I could never have come up with on my own. I figure that the Power that created the Universe and all its inhabitants will certainly know how to assist each of us in an easy and effortless way.
Creating Your Own “Help Wanted”
I don’t have a lot of rules for this. I believe that God hears your desires even if you haven’t expressed them as eloquently as you might have liked. You don’t have to be a good writer or speller. You can use a computer or write the requests in pen, pencil or crayons.
State your concerns. Dear God (Universe) – Here’s what I’m worried about. Write a few paragraphs.
Say what you want and make it as specific as possible. Don’t tell God how you want the answers to come. The Universe has amazing resources, well beyond our limited means, that can bring about miracles and fulfill our desires.
End with something that allows for the fact that God has a greater wisdom and may have better or different plans to resolve your issue. I conclude with “God, if the above is in my highest interest, please work with me to bring this into my life. Thank You for all Your blessings. I remain open to Your guidance and direction.”
Create a “mailbox” for your requests. I’ve had students who designed elaborate containers for their letters to God. They were beautifully painted works of art with inspiring words and symbols on them. Others have simply used a shoebox, a Tupperware container or a special journal. God doesn’t care what your mailbox looks like, but if it feels good to you to decorate it, please do!
Await a response. The answers come in varied ways depending on the nature of your request. You might want to keep notes of any and all indications that your request is being answered. Pay attention to any flashes of insight, coincidences, synchronicities, a persistent thought that nudges you in a new direction, or any flickers of enthusiasm to contact someone or to start on a specific plan of action. God will begin putting the right people, ideas and situations in your path so that your request will unfold in just the right way at just the right time and be a “win-win” solution for all involved.
Let me know how this works for you. I’d love to hear all the creative ways the Universe has responded to your requests.
