How to Follow Your Inner Compass

In my recent survey, many of you asked for more “how to” articles to enable you to listen to and act on your intuitive wisdom. Here’s a technique from my book, Compass of the Soul.

Sit quietly.  Close your eyes and take a few deep, relaxing breaths.

Think of a time when you felt joyful, relaxed and at peace in your life.  Spend a few moments savoring those memories.  Remember the people you were with, the activities you were involved with, the home you lived in.  Do whatever it takes to make the scene and your feelings as vivid as possible.

Ask your intuition this question, “What could I do to bring these good feelings into my life again?”

Pay attention to any thoughts, feelings, impressions and body sensations you have.  There are many ways that your intuition communicates with you.  You may find that the answer doesn’t come to you immediately.  That’s fine.  It may come in a dream.  Or later in the day, you might just “know” the answer.

When you feel ready, open your eyes and return to normal consciousness.

Your Intuition Journal:

If you think of a pie chart, what percentage of your time and energy do you currently allocate to work, social life, spiritual life, family, fun or any other area that is important to you? Do you feel like there is some part of your life that is currently out of balance?  If so, here are some questions for you (and your intuition!) to consider.

What could I do to bring good feelings and balance into my life again?

What action steps am I willing to take to bring more balance?

Expect a few setbacks, they’re a natural part of the process in creating a life you love.  Don’t view them or yourself as a failure because you ran into an obstacle.  Pick yourself up, continue to experiment, and proceed with all the fearlessness you can muster. Ask yourself what you learned and get back on your path. Take some small steps toward your dream and keep walking!

I’d love to read your ideas. What did you discover while doing this exercise?

PS: Compass of the Soul is available on Kindle through Amazon.

When Things Aren’t Working Out

Do you have a goal in your life…something you really want…but it’s beginning to feel like it’s unachievable? Perhaps it’s about finishing school or finding a partner or achieving some kind of professional recognition. What do you do when you feel like quitting?

I know we’ve all experienced issues like this when we want to achieve or create something new in our life and yet there’s a big roadblock or a whole series of them in the way. Here are some 7 tips I share with my intuitive reading clients to help them figure out their next steps:

Make it Fun

No one likes doing anything that’s monotonous and uninteresting. What would make the next steps more enjoyable to you? Perhaps you could enlist the help of a buddy for support. Or when you’ve completed a milestone, you could reward yourself with a special meal, a manicure, chocolate (my favorite!) or some other treat. Maybe there’s strength — and support — in numbers, and a support group would make it something you look forward to. Challenge yourself to come up with as many ways as you can to make studying fun.

Be Creative

I’ve written eight books and I have to share with you that, at times, I can sit and stare at the computer screen forever. Nothing comes into my mind to write and I feel stuck. Those are the times I know I need to get creative! Some of the things I’ve done are to bring my laptop to my local Starbucks and have a delicious cup of coffee to reward myself for writing. I’ve also taken a pen, paper and a book to the wooded area near my house to do some research. If all else fails, I might even take a short nap! Do anything that shifts your focus and gets you going in a different direction.

Set Small Achievable Goals

Sometimes you can’t move forward because the task seems way too huge. Ask yourself if there’s a way to break the job down into smaller pieces. For example, “I’ve got to pass my math test in order to get my nursing degree” seems overwhelming. But saying to yourself, “Today I’m going to read and understand pages 1 – 5 in my study guide,” makes it achievable.

Move Out of Your Comfort Zone

Sometimes you get stuck because you’re afraid of the change that’s happening in your life. Especially if you’re making a major life change that’s likely to mean a job full of responsibility and more than a little stress caring for others. Every one of us goes through these times of transition. You have to let go of the seemingly comfortable world you’ve known in order to move into something new and (hopefully) more rewarding.

Do At Least One Thing Every Day

There are times when you just need to be an adult, suck it up and say, “I have to do this even though I don’t want to.” It takes a lot more energy trying to avoid doing something you need to do than actually doing it. Ask yourself, “What could I do today to move myself closer to this goal?” The answer, of course, depends on your goal. Answers might be to take a class, read an article, go to a networking event, send an email or make a phone call. Be sure to reward yourself after you’re done.

Is Your Goal Something You Really Want?

This one is a little tricky and only you can know the answer. Is your goal something you really want? When you’re passionate, excited and enthusiastic about something, that’s a signal from your inner wisdom that your goal is worth pursuing. Conversely, if you’re feeling drained, bored or uninterested, it’s a sign to let it go or to not move ahead with it. Your desire to quit trying to achieve your goal could be your intuition indicating that what you want isn’t the right next step just now. On the other hand, you may have read all my great advice and decided you’re so excited you want it more than ever!

Watch Your Self Talk

“I hate ____!” “I’m not good at ___.” “I’ll never get ____.” Fill in the blanks with your goal or intention. Have you been saying those things to yourself lately? What you say to yourself in your inner dialog has a huge impact on your life. What if you could shift your thinking a little and as a result, this issue or goal became a lot easier? Try things like, “This might be easier than I think.” “What if I could make it fun?” “I know I’ve done tough things before, so I can do this!” “I know I’m a smart person.” Those are just a few examples. Choose some thoughts that make you feel better and will help you break free of your self-imposed limitations.

Know that you’re not alone. We ALL go through stuck times in life when our minds feel full of self-doubt. Each and every one of us has felt like quitting at one time or another. I believe these are times when it’s so important to listen to your own inner wisdom. Take time today to close your eyes, center within and ask, “What’s my next step?”

Pay attention to any whispers, nudges, ideas or feelings that come to you. Don’t be discouraged if the answer doesn’t come right away. You may find that you receive an “aha” moment later in the day.

Take action on the answer you receive and keep going. Your wise inner guidance wants you to succeed.

What do YOU do when you feel like quitting? I’d love to hear from you!

Do You Let FEAR Decide Your Life?

I was watching a recent episode of the television show, “Blue Bloods.” It’s a show featuring an Irish Catholic family with several generations of members who are in law enforcement. It stars Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynihan. In this particular episode, Moynihan’s college-aged daughter, Nicky, is discussing her potential college choices.

Tom Selleck, who plays her grandfather, asks her, “How will you know you made the right choice?”

She replies, “That’s easy! It’s the one that makes me the most excited and then I want to throw up!”

I laughed with recognition. I think it’s often the way we feel when we make an intuitive decision. To put it a little more delicately than Nicky, have you ever gotten really excited about a new direction, idea or potential path? Then, when you actually take action and DO this thing, you got scared and freaked out. You may have decided it wasn’t really a gut feeling, it was just indigestion!

In my recent survey YOU, my newsletter readers, asked how to differentiate between fear and intuition? I want to assure you that it’s perfectly normal to feel scared, nervous, anxious and yes, even like throwing up, when you make a decision that will impact your life in a big way. It’s also normal to think, “What if I’m wrong?” “What if I’m not smart (rich, experienced, good-looking, young, old, etc.) enough to do this thing I want to do?”

What do you do if you find yourself in this situation and yet want to go forward anyway? Take a small step! See if you can break the task down into smaller, less scary, pieces and then keep going.

Like the young, Nicky, you may feel excited about something. This response is a clue from your intuition. If you feel excited, energized, curious, interested in something, it’s your intuition saying, “move in this direction.”

How do you create some smaller steps to build the bridge onto the new path you want in your life? Let’s take Nicky’s desire for going to college as an example. Here are some things she could do to make it a little less scary.

Research the school
Talk to people who have gone there.
Visit the school
Apply to the school
Check out the Facebook page of the school.
Read articles about famous people who have gone there and what they liked or didn’t like about the place.

Hopefully, you get the idea. These small actions help make the decision a little less scary and incorporate some concrete, rational and practical decision-making into the mix as well.

There is one more idea that helps. Ask yourself, “If I don’t do this thing, will I look back at my life and regret it?”

If the answer is yes, you do need to overcome your fear and do the thing that scares you! That’s what makes life a big adventure.

I’m curious. How have you managed your fear and anxiety when making a big life decision? I’d love to hear your tips.

Wake Up to Inner Guidance!

Intuition is like any skill. The more you use it, the better you get at it. I’d like to share a technique that I do almost every morning. The best part? You can do it while you’re still in bed!

Step One: Think about something you’d like to create in your life. It doesn’t need to be super specific. It can be “I’d love to have a fun and rewarding new job.” Or, “I’d love to be in a happy and loving partnership.”

Step Two: This is where intuition comes in. It’s a super easy and fun technique! Each day take at least one small step toward what you’re excited about. Excitement, curiosity and interest are all ways that your intuition communicates with you. It’s saying, in effect, “this way to success and happiness.” It directs you towards the easiest path to a life you love.

What does a small step look like?

Here are some ideas:

Take a class
Research your interest
Send an email
Take a trip
Strike up a conversation with a stranger
Make a phone call
Join a group
Take a walk
Talk to someone who has aspects of your ideal life
Do something to move out of your comfort zone
Volunteer
Tweak a website, resume or blog

Remember…your interest or excitement is a message from your intuition about the next step to take. Whatever it is — do it!

Your goal should be to enjoy this process. Do things each day that are fun, light, and joyful. Learn to be grateful for all that you’ve created. As you move towards your desired outcome, you’ll find synchronicities, coincidences and new ideas emerging. People who can help you achieve your goals will show up in your life and miracles will begin to unfold. Your inner wisdom wants you to succeed.

Remember to have fun! Let me know what you come up with. I love reading your comments!

6 Tips to Help You Feel Better Today

We live in a time of so much change and chaos. We used to answer the question, “How are you?” with “I’m fine!” Now we respond, “I’m crazy busy! There aren’t enough hours in the day!”

Let’s face it. You’re stressed. How do you stop the anxiety and the constant worry and pressure that consumes your day? Here are six practical and easy ideas to help you create some instant calm.

Do More of What Makes You Feel Better

We’re all so different. The very thing that may increase one person’s stress may be the one thing that decreases yours. Pay attention to what makes you feel calmer and more centered. Common stress reducers include more exercise (even a stroll helps!) Also, listening to music, talking with a friend, being of service to others, spending time in nature, eating healthy meals on a regular basis and playing with your pets. What’s on your list? How could you do more of it every day?

Pay Attention to What Makes You Feel Worse

Just as we have things that make us feel better, we definitely have things that make us feel worse. What are your common triggers? Write in a journal when you’re feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern. It may be the Sunday dinner with your family, or the Negative Nelly friend who constantly comes up with worst case scenarios involving you. If there’s someone or something that consistently steals your peace of mind, change it. It doesn’t mean you can no longer have dinner with your family or you have to ditch your friend, but think in advance what would change the dynamic in those common anxiety-producing situations.

Take an Intuition Interlude

Next time you catch yourself fraught with anxiety and upset about the subject of your worry, check in with your intuition.  Get in the habit of asking questions of your intuition and expecting a reply. You might ask, “What could I do to feel calmer about this issue?” In response, you get an image of a quiet lunch in the park by your office. That’s one of the ways your intuition responds — through images.  Your intuition is connected to a higher wisdom that knows what you need.  It will always lead you to peace, forgiveness and gratitude. Lastly, if all else fails, remember what humorist Mark Twain said: “Drag your thoughts away from your troubles…by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it.”

Switch the Channel on Worry

Worry is like any bad habit. It can be addictive. One small fear leads to another and another. Before you know it, you’ve imagined your life falling apart, not only now, but ad infinitum into your future. One of the ways to begin breaking any habit is to simply recognize you’re doing it! “Oops! There I go again…imagining not being able to pay my mortgage.”

But simply the recognition that you’re worrying isn’t usually enough to change it. What can you do to switch the channel? Ask yourself the question, “What could I do to feel better right now?” Or “How could I feel calmer?” Or even, “What would be fun today?” Listen for the answer and take action. If you’ve got a bad worry habit going on, you may need to be patient as you retrain your brain.

Be Kind to Yourself

When people feel bad their self-talk reflects it. “You screwed up. You always make the same mistake. You never learn.”  On and on, we beat ourselves up. You need kindness, love and encouragement, not disparagement. You need a friend, not an enemy. Make sure your words and deeds are gentle and encouraging. Switch the channel on this self-talk. Grab your journal or a piece of paper and write down three things you like about yourself. It doesn’t need to be something big. It could be that you’re a good listener or a loyal friend. Perhaps you love animals and are kind to them. Maybe you’re a whiz at math or know a lot about technology. What do people say they like about you? Whatever it is, the important thing is to appreciate yourself for the little things you may take for granted.

When All Else Fails — Distract Yourself

If stress and anxiety are your common companions, you’ll need an arsenal of helpful weapons when the pressure hits. Think back to what makes you feel better. Collect some uplifting music and audiobooks on your smartphone. (They’re good to listen to when you’re lying awake at 3 AM filled with anxiety!) Also, have a list handy that includes inexpensive, fun things to do around your area and schedule time to do them. Find a hobby like painting, knitting or crafts. Who could you call that you enjoy being with? Plan a future date with them so you have something to look forward to. What makes life fun for you? Start there and keep going!

How to Listen to Your Inner Coach

A few years ago I gave a speech to a group of engineers on “How to Trust Your Gut.” I admit I was a little nervous about it. I’m a decidedly right-brained person and this was clearly a left-brained group! But to my surprise and relief, they were a very open group.

One fellow came up to me after my talk to share his favorite intuition technique. It was a decidedly low-tech approach. He explained that each morning he wrote a question to what he called his “Inner CEO.” He scribbled the question on a 3 X 5 card that he kept in his shirt pocket. He explained that throughout the day, he would receive flashes of insight, “thought messages,” and coincidences relevant to his question. He feels that having the question in his pocket kept him attuned to the questions and open to the answers.

I ran into him recently at another speech I gave. He showed me a stack of his cards that represented several days worth of inquiry. They were filled with creative information and wisdom that he credits with helping him increase sales, hire good employees and successfully resolve a difficult issue with one of his biggest clients. “I couldn’t survive without my cards. They’re my second brain!” he said with a laugh.

Your Inner CEO, or “Inner Coach,” if you prefer, is the creative part of your mind that answers when you ask questions such as, “I wonder how else I can look at this problem?” Or, “I wonder how else I could deal with this decision?” Or, “I wonder what other possibilities exist to solve this problem?”

What is your “Inner Coach” telling you today?

How to Start Your Day Happy

We’re in the midst of a deep winter chill and long dark days as I write this. Doesn’t it always seem more difficult to bounce out of bed feeling optimistic and cheerful when it’s dark and dreary? However, I’ve come to realize that starting the day in a positive frame of mind is a choice I make. Here are a few ideas I’ve experimented with that make it easier. I’d love to hear about YOUR ideas for waking up happy!

Begin Your Day Harmonically

There’s not much that gets me more rattled than loud noises first thing in the morning. The traditional alarm clock sound is guaranteed to get me upset. Choose your tunes! On most smart phones, there’s a setting for the music or sound that’s played on your alarm. This month I have my alarm set to a song by Karen Drucker entitled “All is Well.” Music sets the rhythm for my day. This one makes me feel calm and peaceful. Try out some new melodies that will awaken you in just the right way.

Set the Alarm 15 Minutes Earlier and Meditate

Don’t you just love hitting that snooze button? But, instead of coming wide awake and bounding out of bed, consider meditating. You don’t even have to sit up! Simply observe your breath. Breathe in for a count of 4 to 5, allowing your belly and chest to expand, and breathe out, also for a count of 4 to 5, allowing a feeling of peace to envelop you. You may want to repeat a mantra or affirmation such as, “I begin my day in peace.” Or, “All is well.”  You may also just want to lie there thinking of all the things you feel grateful for…a warm bed, your kids, a job, a roof over your head.

Read a Motivational Quote or Passage

There are so many forms of inspirational wisdom out there on the web as well as in books, apps and “Daily Word” calendars. Many authors have newsletters that you can subscribe to that give you a thought for the day. This can provide a perspective for the day that keeps you going in a positive frame of mind. My favorites are Daily Word, The Daily Motivator, and Hazelden.

Just Sit in Silence

We have so few moments in our multi-tasking world today to sit quietly. But what better way to begin your day? No need to carve out a half-hour or more of meditation time. Simply sit on the deck, porch or your favorite chair, just being still. Inspiration and creative ideas come more easily when you’re being still and quiet.

Check in With Your Intuition

Intuitive wisdom often arrives when you least expect it. However, one of the ways to elicit its guidance is by asking questions. “What’s the best way to improve my mood today?” “What could I do to create more abundance in my life?” “What are three things I could do today to find a great job?” Pay attention to any images, feelings, inner whispers, “aha” moments, or dreams. Those are the main ways that intuition communicates.

How do YOU start your day? I love reading your ideas! And, yes, “Have a great day!”

When Fear Strikes

I’ve been overwhelmed the past few weeks with the news of the shootings in the Pittsburgh synagogue and in Thousand Oaks, CA. Add to that the horrific fires also in California and the flooding and hurricanes elsewhere. I keep wondering how people get through those horrendous events and emerge sane and whole on the other side of them.

Several years ago I wrote a book, “LISTEN: Trusting Your Inner Voice In Times of Crisis.” I interviewed many people and asked for their best advice about how to get through a tough time. Here are five of their answers:

Turn big decisions into small decisions

When you’re in a crisis, everything tends to feel overwhelming. Put your focus on what’s important. What small decision can you make right now that will make you feel better? Those small, incremental steps have a way of paving the way to making successful bigger decisions. Just do the next right thing.

Turn your worries over to God

Accept that your worrying about every little thing isn’t helping. Write your worries down and then put them in a box or write “surrendered to the Divine” across the note. It’s a tangible way to “let go and let God.” Pray. Ask for wisdom from the Universe. The secret to surrendering through prayer is to ask to be Divinely guided. Trust your inner wisdom.

Choose to feel calm

What if this crisis you are currently experiencing is really meant to bring you to a better place? Embrace the change and trust that you’ll come out the other side of it feeling whole again. Find a positive statement that acknowledges the crisis, but will give you hope. Here are two examples: “This is incredibly painful, but I know the worst of it is temporary.” Or “I’ve gotten through tough times before. I know I’ll get through this too.”

Let your awareness soften

Stop and listen. What do you hear? A bird singing? A car honking? A newspaper rustling? Taking your mind off your panic and putting it into the larger reality around you can often shift you away from your fear and into an oasis of peace even if it’s just for a few moments.

Ask for support

When you’re going through a really tough time you might feel like crying, curling up in a ball and pulling the covers over your head. That’s okay and absolutely necessary. But it’s also important to remember that you have social supports that are there to help. Who are the folks you count on? Depending on the nature of your crisis they might be friends, family and co- workers. They might also be social workers, grief counselors and support group members. Think about what you need and want. There is a lot of love in the world and many people who want to help. Reach out.

What tips, suggestions, or advice can you offer other folks going through a difficult time?

5 Ways to Make Today a Good Day

I am thankful that thus far today I have not had any unkind thoughts or said any harsh words or done anything that I regret. However, now I need to get out of bed and things may become more difficult. — Sylvia Boorstein

I admit it. I’m generally a morning person. I usually pop out of bed, take a shower, have some breakfast and I’m good to go!

However, lately I’ve been waking up uncharacteristically grumpy. I’m not sure about the reason for this. Winter coming on? Stress? A work project that has taken on a life of its own? Whatever the reason, I’ve been determined to change it. I want to wake up and view the sunny side of life again.

I began to do a little research about techniques on how to make it a good day. Here are five life changing practices I’ve discovered by talking to friends, colleagues and clients:

What’s Fun?

While you’re still lying in bed, spend a few moments thinking about something you’re looking forward to. It can be something simple — a good cup of coffee, a friend you’re joining for lunch, the novel you’ll read on the bus ride to work, or a fresh bouquet of flowers you’ll put on your desk.

Plan an Act of Kindness

Who do you know who’s having a tough time? Perhaps your co-worker could use a word of encouragement. Or your neighbor who’s been sick would love some of your homemade soup. Take some extra change along with you and drop some coins into a homeless person collection box. Or pay for the toll of the person driving behind you. Looking forward to helping others is a sure-fire way to get your day off to a good start.

Gratitude

Think about what you’re grateful for. It could be your warm bed, a great partner, your healthy body, work you love, good friends, the smell of coffee brewing, or the breeze on your skin. Take this time to be thankful for all that you have in your life instead of putting the focus on what you don’t have.

What’s Your Intention?

Your thoughts have power. So, rather than lie there imagining another dreadful day, change your focus! For example, set the intention to have a productive, high-energy or simply a quiet day. You fill in the blank. Some people have suggested they find it helpful to choose a quality they want to exemplify for the day such as peace, compassion, humility or spirit.

Check in With Your Gut

Sometimes we have a tough time getting started because we’re dreading something during the day. Bring it to mind before you get out of bed. Think about the outcome you want. Ask your intuition, “What’s the best way to proceed?” or “How could I experience peace about this situation?” Pay attention to any images, feelings, thoughts that make you feel calmer. That’s your intuition speaking. Take action on its wisdom.

Addendum: As I was writing this blog, I had this tune sung by Doris Day going through my head called “When The Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin Along.” My sister and had bedrooms on the second floor of our house when we were kids. When my mom wanted to get us out of bed, she’d blast this song from the bottom of the stairs. I hated it at the time! But now, decades later, I recall it with fond memories. I may just download it to my smart phone and set it as my alarm wake up!

Here are some of the lyrics:

“Wake up, wake up you sleepy head

Get up, get out of bed

Cheer up, cheer up the sun is red

Live, love, laugh and be happy

What if I were blue,

Now I’m walking through,

Walking through the fields of flowers

Rain may glisten but still I listen for hours and hours…”

I’d love to hear your tips and comments. What helps make it a good day?
