Do You Care About Self-Care?
Self-care is anything you do that helps you feel better physically, emotionally and/or spiritually. It’s important — now more than ever — in our hyper-busy, stressful culture. When you practice good self-care, you feel better, you have more energy, you approach life with more confidence and you feel connected to your Spirit and to others.
For all those reasons and more, here’s a quiz to help you determine how well you’re doing, and what you could do to be even better!

I spend time in nature.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
Myriad studies have shown that spending time in nature (or even viewing images of it) will reduce stress, decrease blood pressure and contribute to your physical, spiritual and emotional well-being. Think about where you live. Could you incorporate a walk along the beach, in the woods or through a field? Stroll, slow down and listen to the sounds, sights and smells around you. Breathe and be present.
I maintain my social support.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
Part of taking care of your emotional and spiritual wellness is spending time with people you love and care about AND who love and care about you. Is there a friend or friends that you haven’t reached out to in a while? What would be a fun way to reconnect? Also, pay attention to the folks who drain your energy. It’s okay to say no to them or limit your interaction. Who do you love hanging out with? Make a plan to get together soon.
I spend time in contemplation.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
This could be as simple as taking some time by yourself to sit quietly for a few minutes. It could also be a meditation practice, journal writing, nature walk or reading some inspiring books or blogs. What appeals to your spirit?
I engage my creative side.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
This could be anything from knitting to cooking to painting and anything in between! Only you and your intuition know what lifts your spirits. Is there something you enjoyed when you were younger that you’d like to pick up again? Often that’s a good place to begin. It’s okay to be a beginner at something. A creative project also helps you learn those spiritual values of patience, self-acceptance, releasing judgement and the like.
I sustain a spiritual practice.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
Again, there’s no one right way to do this or define it. A spiritual practice to one person may be reading the Bible, Torah, Koran or other religious texts. To someone else, it could be yoga, meditation or chanting. If what you’ve done in the past isn’t working for you anymore, switch it up and try something new.
I serve others.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
Serve others — When we volunteer we’re helping others and sharing a common humanity. It gives our lives a deeper purpose and meaning. And did you know that there’s a part of your brain that lights up when you give back? It’s associated with the feel-good chemical dopamine, which helps us feel joy and delight as it releases stress.
I eat nourishing food.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
We often feel tired and downright crummy when we’re not eating well. What could you do to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you’re eating? Taking time to sit down to a healthy meal is one of life’s pleasures. Consider adding some relaxing music, candles and flowers to your meal. It’s self-care at its best.
I get enough rest.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
Getting enough rest each day plays a significant role in both your physical health as well as your emotional health. Who hasn’t felt cranky and out-of-sorts after a night of insomnia? Set a regular bedtime and consider winding down about an hour or so earlier with some relaxing music, journal writing, light reading, a warm bath or any other ritual that helps you feel calm, peaceful, and ready for a good night’s sleep.
I exercise regularly.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
Exercise regularly — Exercising doesn’t need to be working out at the gym. What do you enjoy? Perhaps it’s ice skating in the winter or taking a cool swim in a pond on a hot summer day. Think back over the past several months. What leaps out at you that was fun exercise? A walk, dancing, bike rides, roller-blading, bird watching, tennis, hiking are all ideas to consider.
I practice gratitude.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
Sometimes when you’re feeling down, depressed and anxious, it’s tough to conjure up anything you’re grateful for. It’s all too easy to focus on what you don’t have. While there are probably many things that you have no control over in your life, you do have control over your thinking. Whatever you focus on, you move towards. What’s working well? Dwell on those things and change your life for the better.
I move out of my comfort zone.
Often
Sometimes
Rarely
“I’m scared.” “I don’t have confidence.” We all feel that way at times. However, true self-care requires that we challenge ourselves. It may be learning a new skill, making some new friends or applying for a different job. When you become bored and uninterested in something, that’s your inner guidance telling you it’s time for a change. Don’t ignore it. Begin to take steps in the direction of what excites or interests you.
Do You Care About Self-Care?
You’re a self-care superstar!
You get an A+ in the self-care category. Keep going!
Could your self-care routine use a little boost?
Where does your intuition tell you that you could do better? Look back over the list. Is there one area that leaps out at you and makes you feel a little excited, eager or motivated? Again, that’s your inner wisdom encouraging you in that direction!
Don't forget you deserve your own care!
If you fell significantly short on all or most of these, don’t feel that you should tackle the entire list right now. That wouldn’t be good self-care. Begin with one. Take small steps. That will move you in the right direction. Keep going. You’re on your way.

Not Sure What to Do? Try New Things!
I’ve had many conversations with clients lately who describe themselves as “stuck.” “Nothing is happening” and “I don’t know what I want,” are frequent complaints. It’s been my observation that quite often the words and phrases above really translate to, “I’m scared. I can’t figure out how to achieve my goals, so I’ll just stay where I am until I’m forced to do something different.”
What should you do when your life feels like it’s on hold?
Pay attention to what you tell yourself
Writer Serge Kahili King notes, “All thoughts, words, images, prayers, blessings, and deeds are listened to by All That Is.” What goes on in your mind? If the bulk of your thoughts are negative, it’s very difficult for your intuition to get through to offer help. Begin to ask, “Is there another way of looking at this situation that will make me feel better?” Or think of someone you admire and ask, “What would ____ do?” When you can begin to focus on the positive side of things, the Universe can easily present you with opportunities that will lead you to your hopes and dreams.
Be bold
Have you ever talked yourself out of something because you felt scared? You may be surprised to learn that nearly everyone feels anxious before they try something new. Think back on your own life. How did you feel before you took your current job or before you moved into your present home? You probably felt uncomfortable for a while until, over time, the new became familiar. Whenever you make a change in your life, however large or small, you’re out of your comfort zone for a while.
Try new things
Your intuition will always nudge you to try new things. That’s how you grow spiritually. It’s also how you gain self-confidence and self-esteem. What is one small thing you can try this month that has you a little scared? Perhaps it is asking someone you admire out to lunch or speaking up in a meeting to share a comment or ask a question. Be daring. Have courage. Most importantly, have FUN! Be willing to move just outside your comfort zone. You’ll be surprised at the world of possibilities that open up to you as you begin to take risks.
Know that you live in a loving universe
I see many clients when they are struggling with massive indecision or have simply lost sight of their dreams. I’ve found that there is an assumption from many people on a spiritual path that if you’re doing it “right” you will feel wonderful all the time. You’ll be in perfect health, have a relationship with your soul mate that’s heaven-sent (and you never argue!). Money will flow from heaven at all times and your children will be perfect and well-adjusted. Well dream on . . . It ain’t necessarily so. There is wise guidance available to you at all times, supporting you, loving you and encouraging your growth. We are all here to learn about love, compassion, forgiveness and faith. Sometimes this means that you face difficulties and challenges. As you face these and overcome them, you become strong in the weak places. Know that you live in a loving Universe that is there to assist you step by step.

Believe You Can Do It
I’m noticing a trend with my intuitive reading sessions. Many clients are clear about what they want to create in their lives. It might be a new career, a loving partnership, a healthy body. However, they soon follow up with all the reasons they believe that they can’t have what they want. The thoughts range from “I’m too old.” “I don’t have the right education.” “I’ve tried that and it didn’t work.” You get the idea!
I believe that if a dream is in your heart that the Universe/Infinite Intelligence/God placed it there. Who are you to deny it?
You are not alone. Your desires are a co-creation process with the divine. One of the ways that this wisdom communicates with you is through your intuition. I’d like to share one of my favorite techniques for tuning in to receive answers.
Your Wise Self – Exercise
Sit quietly and close your eyes. Allow your mind to drift back to a time in your past where you had a burning desire or dream you wanted to fulfill. Perhaps it was to have a family, to own your own home, to have a certain type of career or to obtain a college degree.
Spend a few minutes communing with this younger you. What were your hopes, dreams, and ambitions five, ten, fifteen, twenty years ago? How did you know what you wanted to achieve? How did it feel? What did it look like? How did you experience it in your body? These are all ways your intuition communicates your true passions and purpose.
Allow your thoughts to move forward in time. What became of those hopes and dreams? Did you allow some of them to fall away through discouragement? Did a few of them come true? Perhaps some of your dreams changed along the way as you grew and matured.
Most of our goals do not materialize overnight. They take months, years and sometimes decades to mature and manifest. Look at one of the dreams that you have achieved and look at the process you’ve gone through to succeed. What have you learned? What are you proud of? What do you wish you had done differently?
Take a slow, deep breath and exhale. Ask your wise inner self, “What new dreams should I pursue?” Wait, listen and reflect on the answer you receive. (Pause)
Then ask, “I want to allow this dream to unfold with joy, ease and peace — how can I begin?”
Notice how this wisdom communicates. You may hear a quiet inner voice, an image, a knowing or an idea may simply pop into your head. Write it down. What action step can you take based on this inner knowledge? That’s your starting point. Now keep going. The Universe wants you to succeed.
Let me know about the answers you received. I’d love to hear more!

Do You Feel Discouraged?

That’s your guidance speaking!
Your intuition is your inner compass. It points you in the right direction. If you’re feeling down, discouraged, scared and worried, that’s your intuition inviting you to shift your focus. It’s telling you to choose thoughts and actions that will make you feel better.
If listening to your intuition feels difficult, or if you’re out of practice, try this: each day choose to do one thing that makes you feel better. It could be as simple as changing a habitual negative thought, taking a walk, hanging out with positive people or perhaps not watching the news.
Inner wisdom guides you in a wide variety of ways. The simplest is that if something is draining, boring, uninteresting, etc., begin to move away from it. Conversely, if you find something interesting or exciting or simply that you’re curious about it — move in that direction.
Intuition guides you toward miracles and lets you know which direction will produce the success you seek. It communicates through images, words, dreams, feelings and physical sensations.
What are you feeling guided to move towards? Start taking some steps in that new direction today!

Challenge the Negative Nellies
I had a roommate years ago who was incredibly negative. One evening “Theresa” and I arrived home from work after a particularly long day. Neither of us had eaten dinner and we were just plain hungry and tired. The circumstances provoked a heated debate about some world issue.
As usual, I was promoting an optimistic view of the situation. Theresa, who was always rather pessimistic about things, took the negative view. She was quite adamant that her view was right. She was so incensed with me that at one point she stamped her foot, put her hand on her hip and proclaimed, “I think you are PATHOLOGICALLY POSITIVE!”
I have to admit that I burst out laughing at this comment, which didn’t help Theresa’s mood one bit. I just thought it was incredibly funny and I will cherish it for the rest of my life!
Remembering that story got me to thinking…Have you ever been around someone who is a complainer or fear monger? It’s draining! “The gas prices are awful.” “The economy is going down the tubes.” “There’s a recession coming our way.” “It will be hard to find a job.”
Shift Your Mindset and Open to Guidance
If you find yourself thinking like this, shift your focus. What you say to yourself is often a self-fulfilling prophecy. It also shuts you off from a free flow of intuitive guidance. It may take some work to change your habitual thoughts but it’s worth the effort. Try saying things like,
“Let me be open to new ideas.”
“Things have a way of working out for me.”
“The economy may be bad, but I’m open and receptive to new avenues of income.”
“I’ve gotten through tough times before. I know I’ll be guided through this.”
“I trust my inner wisdom to guide me to a better situation.”
If it’s tough for you to do this, try to channel your “Inner Lynn.” Remember me? I’m the pathologically positive one!
What things do you say to yourself when times are tough? I’d love to hear your affirmations!

4 Ways to Love Those Pesky Life Transitions
This year has brought a lot of change in my life! One of the biggest was selling our home on Cape Cod and moving to the southern Maine coast. I could tell you all the practical reasons for the move, but honestly, I felt intuitively guided to do it. I hasten to add that just because my intuition said “move” it didn’t mean the entire transition was easy and effortless! There were a lot of ups and downs.
Every major decision means you enter into a new cycle of transformation. This may require new beliefs, a different spiritual path, a new career, the beginning or ending of a relationship. It may also mean letting go of familiar people and places and moving on.
Throughout the past few months I’ve thought about ways to happily survive a big life transition.
It’s Okay to Be in a Transition
Several years ago when I was going through a particularly tough time, a friend shared her helpful theory. She said, “When everything is falling apart something new is about to break through.” I’ve always remembered that and taken it to heart. It’s easy to get stuck in a quagmire of thinking that makes you fear you’ll be trapped in this awful situation forever. Things change. Life changes. It usually gets better if we can allow our intuition to guide us. In the meantime, it helps to believe that we’ll get through this and emerge on the other side feeling better, more hopeful and with a deeper wisdom.
What Would Be Fun?
When you’re going through a major transition, life often feels dreary and heavy. Your thinking may simply revolve around “what should I do to get out of this rut?” and you come up with a rehash of old options as a response. All the answers probably seem too difficult to achieve or require more effort and energy than you presently have available. Your first task is to get the energy moving in your life again. You want to get out of the emotional state that’s keeping you where you are. One of the best ways to accomplish this is doing things that are enjoyable. What’s fun for you? This doesn’t need to be a long vacation (although it could be!) Most people find they can shift their energy by doing simple things; reading a good book, doing something creative, listening to music, going to a fair, sitting by the beach, planning a get together with friends, taking a class or meeting new people. Begin now to plan something fun on a more regular basis.
Your Doubts and Fears Are Normal
Don’t let doubt guide your life and your decisions. Accept uncertainty, anxiety, and even fear, as your companions on the path of change. You’ve made it this far in life. You’re learning new skills, relying on your inner guidance, and making decisions that allow you to choose what makes you feel alive with excitement, not deadened with fear and frustration. Shakespeare put it this way, “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.” Do you want to make your dreams come true? Or your doubts? Have courage and be kind to yourself as you choose the path God is directing you to … through your intuition.
What Are You Yearning For?
When you’re in a transition you may also be unclear about your future goals. It feels a lot easier to take actionable next steps when your intention is well-defined. What if it’s not? How do you move forward? Here’s a clue — what are you yearning for? Close your eyes. Put your hand over your heart. Take a deep breath and ask yourself that question. The answer may surprise you and provide some helpful next steps. People often report emotion-based words such as “ease,” “nature,” “adventure,” or “rest.” What words (or images) come to you? Once you have that information, open your eyes. What action steps could you take based on your answers? This is your intuition giving you a homework assignment. It may not be the ultimate guide to getting you unstuck but it’s the beginning of a roadmap. It’s the clues leading you out of where you are to where you want to be.

The Secret Power of Daydreams
4 Ways to Use Them for GuidanceFor many of us, our lives have become increasingly overwhelming. We seem to plan every last minute, so we need to treasure those pockets of time when we’re stopped at a traffic light or before falling asleep at night – and use them to daydream. I’m a big believer in daydreams. My theory is they inform you of what you need in your life.
Try This!
To give you a very simple example: if you’re spending a lot of time imagining what it would be like to enjoy a week at the beach reading trashy novels it may be time for a vacation! Your guidance system informs you through this imagery. Your daydreams are usually pleasurable for a reason. They beckon you as if to say, “Try this.” This is your intuition in the form of daydreams showing you some possible solutions to a problem or concern.
What If You Didn’t Worry?
What if you knew for certain that everything you’re presently worried about would work out okay? What if you knew that you had the inner wisdom to handle any life situation that came along? What if you knew that even if something difficult came your way, you’d still be okay? What if you knew that you had a constant source of abundance flowing to you at all times. What if you didn’t have to worry? What would you do?
The “Intuitive Nudge”
Many of us are out of practice with listening to our inner guidance system. We’ve ignored the gentle “intuitive nudges” we’ve received from our Higher Self and feel out of touch with our dreams. We receive this guidance in so many different ways. There’s no ONE right way. You might get intuitive information through meditation, through a strong emotion, or through the voice of Spirit in your ear. You may simply “just know.”
Is there something you really desire in your life? Perhaps it’s a new job, a positive change in a relationship, or business you’d love to start. If you’re like most people, you often feel swamped and don’t know where to begin to create your dreams. You may feel overwhelmed with options or feel like you have none at all. Either way, which direction do you take?
What Makes You Happy?
Fortunately we have been sent to Planet Earth with a magnificent inner guidance system. It’s really quite simple: “What makes you happy, fills you with joy or thrills you with excitement?” If you have those feelings about anything at all in your life, that’s part of your guidance system telling you what to do. What could you do today to honor your intuition?

The Spiritual Gifts of Summer
Do you find yourself racing through life like a multi-tasking maniac? Summer is your time to slow down and smell the flowers.
I’m reading a book by Rev. Kirk Byron Jones entitled, “Say Yes to Grace: How to Burn Bright Without Burning Out.” He suggests a “One-Thing-at-a-Time-Day.” He writes, “This would be a day in which all persons would be encouraged to resist all multi-tasking, and focus on doing one thing at a time, calmly, deliberately, and when possible, with great pleasure.”
I love that idea and think it’s conducive to helping you stay open to intuitive messages that can guide your life.
Summer happens to be my favorite season. I’ve made it a practice to savor its gifts. Here are my top ten favorite things I’ve done so far this summer:
Drove out to the ice cream stand in the country for my favorite peach ice cream.
Read a “beach” book cover to cover in one sitting.
Had a spontaneous picnic with friends.
Went on an early Sunday morning bike ride and watched the sun come up.
Sat out on my patio with a cup of coffee and listened to the birds sing.
Took a walk by the ocean on an unusually cool, crisp day.
Went to an evening “concert on the common” in our town with my hubby.
Toasted marshmallows at a fire pit at a friend’s lakeside cottage.
Took an evening swim at a local pond and watched the sunset.
Shopped at a Farmer’s Market and bought some yummy, juicy early peaches.
It occurs to me that most of these things were free or low cost. It helps to remember that it doesn’t take an expensive, extended vacation to enjoy the spiritual gifts of summer (or any other time of the year!)
What are YOUR favorite things so far this summer?
